he founding fathers of NTU put education in high regard. From wealthy industrialists to trishaw riders, they rallied together to establish our predecessor institution Nanyang University in 1955 with a shared dream: that more able students could achieve their

potential through a university education. Since then, NTU has more than realised this original dream, having grown from a humble university at the Yunnan Garden campus to enjoy a world presence, with strong representation in China, Europe, India, and the United States.

NTU has come a long way. Today, it boasts one of the largest engineering colleges in the world and a top ranked business-school. We have grown with the establishment of the Colleges of Science and Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, and developed complementary strengths in the sciences, humanities, arts, and entrepreneurship to prepare students for the global working world. A new joint medical school with the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, which will begin admitting students in 2013, will further enhance NTU’s academic profile.

We are ranked amongst the top one per cent of the world’s universities, with 11 Nobel laureates on the Advisory Board of our Institute of Advanced Studies. NTU’s College of Engineering has six schools focused on technology and innovation and a research output among the top four in the world. In recognition of these facts, our externally-funded research grants (five-year cumulative) have increased four folds since FY2006, from over $245 million to more than $984 million in FY2009. The funding for our sustainability initiatives stands in excess of $830m.

Our unique identity is due as much to our knack for crossing international and intellectual borders, as it is to our ability to embrace modern technology while

holding fast to our Asian heritage, which emphasises strong work ethics. In a modern and globalised world, we believe it is important for our

students to have access to opportunities beyond our shores. Through the cross-pollination of knowledge and ideas, and

the exchange of experiences made possible by our global and joint degree programmes, we allow you to gain a

wider perspective of the world. It is an important first step in finding your place in it.

While we are geared towards nurturing entrepreneurial leaders, our spirit is, as it has always been, to give our students the opportunities and means to pursue their own dreams. We

welcome you to join us to discover yourself – in the vibrant community of students and lecturers, and

in the rigour of scholarship and learning that you will find at NTU.

Welcome to Nanyang Technological University!

Alumni Privileges & Services

As a freshman, I found the academic demands threatening at first: there was little or no spoon feeding, but I realised that these conditions pushed me to discover the lessons for myself. With every bit of new understanding came an undeniable sense of accomplishment.

Student life was hectic, divided between lectures, tutorials, hall activities and sports. Time was precious, and I quickly learned not to fritter it away. Time management is still by far the most important lesson I have learned, the foundations of which were well laid during my time as an undergraduate, on campus. Today, on top of my personal life, I manage a global business and am travelling 75% of the time to work with various stakeholders ranging from clients to regulators to partners and vendors. Without the ability to prioritise and manage all the calls on my time, not only will I feel the pressures of the rat race, it is more than likely to turn into a flea circus!

The final year project at NTU was an enterprise requiring not only the demonstration of a deep understanding of the subject matter, but also the challenge of team dynamics. Much like a steam engine using different coals, we had to manage everyone’s boiling point without losing our fire. This aspect of it, keeping the balance, keeping everybody going, was as much a challenge as the research and presentation work. No student is strong alone. This applies very much to life after campus as well.

You will find the university experience a valuable period of personal growth, where you will learn to deal with adults as adults, and not merely learn, but learn how to learn. I am grateful for my lessons, and have no doubt you will be as well.

Not many people are as lucky as I am. I found my direction very early on, and it has motivated my efforts and choices all the way since.

My path to NTU charts back to my secondary school days when I found out that NTU was the only local university that offered specialisation in Aeronautical Engineering. My love for aviation fixed my future date with Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (back then it was Mechanical and Production Engineering) in NTU.

The four years in NTU gave me a strong engineering foundation that allowed me to join an aviation company immediately after graduation. I applied what I learned in NTU to help me grow as an engineer, and now, after more than 14 years in the industry, I have become the Regional Sales Director of an aviation company. Even so, I still fall back on my engineering skills when I sell my company services to my airline customers. As the saying goes, “you cannot sell what you do not know.”

Thank you NTU, for giving me the foundation and the opportunity to walk my road. Where I am today, I owe very much to you.

Upon graduation from NTU School of Biological Sciences (SBS), I was honoured to be offered a position in the exclusive Citibank Management Associate program.

SBS has prepared us not only for a career in Sciences, but has also empowered us with the aptitude and skill sets to shine on the world stage. After making the bold decision to start my career in an entirely different industry, I am proud to say that I have never once felt inadequate facing the challenges presented to me at Citibank. My years in NTU have offered me not only textbook-based knowledge, but also the ability to conquer professional milestones with immense confidence, and a worldly perspective. Many times in the course of work I have met with expressions of surprise that a Biological Sciences student managed to make it into such a prestigious program from the finance industry. The answer I often give is that my grounding in Biological Sciences has inculcated in me the value of flexibility and the ability to adapt, in order to succeed in this ever-changing world of today.

NTU will always remain a special place to me, for it has shaped me into the person I am today. I leave the institution holding on to friendships for life, and the wisdom of many mentors. Citibank’s willingness to invest in a raw individual has inspired me to contribute to the best of my abilities, and it has been an exceptional and rewarding journey till date.

Looking back, I am glad that I made the decision to pursue my tertiary education with NTU. I am proud to be an alumnus of NTU, and look forward to contributing actively to my alma mater for many years to come.

lobal Programmes is the highlight of NTU's initiatives for our undergraduates to open up to a wealth of inter-cultural, classroom and career experiences through a systematic

and exciting process.

Led by our mission of Educating Leaders and AdvancingKnowledge for Singapore and beyond, we have formed various partnerships with distinguished foreign universities and organisations both locally and overseas to give students a dynamic experience in global education.

NTU’s flagship GIP gives specially selected students theopportunity to travel abroad for work and/or study or research immersions in China, India, Indonesia, Europe (Denmark, France, Germany and Switzerland), United States or Vietnam to gain a thorough global experience.

The programme gives students a deeper understanding of the unique culture, way of life, entrepreneurial spirit, and energy of some of the world's most exciting and dynamic economics. The balance between rigorous academic grounding and global perspectives is paramount in helping students to develop an edge

in their career, build a global network and achieve significant personal

development.

Global Programmes 09

International Student Exchange Programme (INSTEP)Students under the INSTEP programme will have the opportunity to spend a semester or two living and studying abroad. This experience allows students to broaden their horizons by giving them a taste of an international student life while pursuing their NTU degree. Students will return not only with new knowledge, but with an increased cultural understanding and a broader perspective.

Global Summer Studies (GSS)GSS is a “study-n-play” programme that allows NTU undergraduates the dual advantage of travelling overseas during their summer vacation (May-July) and, at the same time, earn academic credits.

The programme is designed to encourage students to maximise the use of their summer vacation to join a prestigious overseas university around Asia, Europe and Americas, to participate in programmes that are either related to academic coursework, cultural immersion or language instruction. GSS is unique in comparison to other programmes as it is open to all undergraduate students regardless of their year of study.

Some of the benefits of GSS include:

Global Discovery Programme (GDP)GDP is a partially funded four week study and visit programme that aims to give the participants a broad understanding of emerging economies such as Vietnam and India. Rather than simply presenting and discussing business related issues within the confines of a classroom the program encourages them to make their own evaluation through field trips and networking sessions with local representatives of business houses, management boards and investment firms. Students will also have the opportunity to engage both faculty members and local students in discussions on the

several aspects of doing business in these markets. By the end of the programme they will have gained a sweeping review of the historical evolution of the country/region, its governance system and the economic transformation that is now taking place there, not to mention the excursions and visits to the many fascinating places of interest. Academic Units will awarded to each participant upon his/her successful completion of the programme.

Overseas Attachment ProgrammeThe Overseas Attachment Programme is a unique learning experience for students to experience life outside Singapore. Based on a strong partnership between NTU and the industry, the programme allows students to widen their perspective of the working world, enhance their employability and career mobility worldwide upon graduation.

With attachments available in Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and United States, participation in this programme will empower the students with the capabilities to compete locally and internationally.

Earning as many as 8 academic units. An immersive experience of the academic culture and heritage of the university and country. An opportunity to gain global exposure and network with peers and professors at other prestigious universities. No limits on vacancies at universities under GSS Americas First Year and Final Year students may also apply.

he latest that has sounded in the first decade of this new century is global integration with its realities and challenges. We are engaging a world that is

connected multi-dimensionally - a global system of systems. The world's business and public sector leaders of today and tomorrow need to be equipped to cope with a rapid escalation of systems-level diversity and complexity that confront them, an unprecedented level of such complexity expected indeed to accelerate in the coming years within the global environment.

This is Renaissance Engineering. This is holistic engineering in the wake of self awareness of organised diversity. We are making a new waveof engineers with the potential to develop into outstanding Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) or Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) in a complex world.

The Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP) is an integrated co-terminal engineering programme which will admit 50

elite engineering students to NTU in this flagship programme. The REP awards a dual-degree

comprising Bachelor of Engineering Science degree (with specialisation in a specific engineering discipline) and Master of Science in Technology Management in 4.5 years.
