Allthethingsyounormallydoasaproducertomitigateagainstriskwerebypassedhere.Thereweresomekeythingswhichweknewwouldwork,somekeythingswhichwehopedwouldwork,buttherewerealsothingswenevercouldhavepredictedorknown,butwhichlookingbackmadeThePassionwhatitwas.Moreoftenthannot,itwaswhereweletgoandhandedeverythingovertothatbrillianttown.SomewherehalfwaythroughSaturday,Irealizedthetownwastheforcebehindit,notus,andbySundayweweresurfinganunstoppableeventhorizon.Ultimately,thisfearlesstrustofbeingonaco-created,co-ownedjourneywithawholetown,awholegloriousoverlookedcommunity,iswhatmadeitsounique–soseatofthepants–andthereforesoliberatingandtranscendent.Themassparticipation,themasshappeningofitall,brokedownallthebarriersandnormsofweekendlifeinasmalltownhuddledundertheM4,sothateveryoneopeneduptheirheartsandmindsandspiritsandwentintoathirdspace:asemi-fictionalversionofthemselves,theirtown,andtheirworld.
LynGardnerinTheGuardianputitmorebeautifullythanIfrominside,couldhavedreamed:“(it)waslikewatchingatowndiscoveringitsvoicethroughasharedactofcreation.Factandfiction,mythandmemory,rumourandreality,eventhelivingandthedeadstalksidebyside.I’mpreparedtobetthatoverthelastthreedays,PortTalbotwasoneofthehappiestplacesonEarth”.Noneofit,them,oruslookedandfeltquitethesameafterwards.Andforme,ashownowfeelssmallifIcan’tcyclearoundit,andspeaktothechiefofpoliceattheendofeveryscene.
Wearenearlyoneyearonfromthatalchemicalweekend,wheneverythingseemedtocollideandyouknew,fromwithinit,thatyouwerepartofsomethinghistoric–forPortTalbot,forWales,fortheatre,forusasayoungcompany.Aftertwoyearsofplanning,weallflewthroughtheintensenon-stop72hourfrenzyoftheweekend(“72hoursoftheatreheaven”forTheGuardian)andthen…itwasdone.Everyonescattered,thestreetswentquietagain,asmallappletreeappearedwherethecrucifixhadstood,andtherhythmsofrealliferesumed.Buteveryonekepttalkingaboutit,couldn’tstoptalkingaboutit,sharingphotosandmovies,paintingit,someevengottattoos…SoatEasterthisyear,we’regoingtoallgatheragainandwelcomeeveryonebacktoAberavonShoppingCentretotellstoriesandsharememories–andfortheworldpremiereofDaveMcKean’svisionaryfeaturefilmversionofit.
Whathappened?Whydidsuchapowerfulthinghappen?Whywasitsolife-changing,soextraordinary,sospecial?Part-festival,part-carnival,part-pageant,partpoliticaldemo,partritual,part-gig,part-puretheatre–itwasgenre-defyingandgenre-defining.PortTalbothasapopulationofabout35,000people,andInowknowthatthisistheperfectsizetomakealotofnoiseandleavealotoflegacy.Youcantakethetownovergeographically.Bythelawofaverages,youcanensureeveryoneinthetownknowsaboutit.Youwillhaveenoughgroupstoaccessandgetinvolved(butnotleaveout),andif12,000peoplecome–whichtheydid–that’sathirdofthetown.It’ssmallenoughtoinvolveeveryvoiceandbigenoughtoshoutveryloudly.

Overthenextfiveyears,WalesLabwillusethenationasalandscapefordevelopingnewtheatreprojects.Twiceayear,opencallswillbepublishedinvitingtheatremakersandartistsfromotherdisciplinestoapplyforshortresidenciestodevelopanideaorpieceofwork.ThisisallthankstosignificantinvestmentfromtheEsméeFairbairnFoundation.
Theinitiativeissplitintothreestrands:
POLLINATE: Asummercampforupto20theatremakersandartistsofvariedexperiencetoshareideas,learnfromeachotherandstimulatenewcollaborationsandprojects.
FERTILISE: Foraroundaweek,smallgroupswillworkonthedevelopmentofaprojecttheyhaveproposed.TherewillbeuptoeightFertiliseprojectsayear,someofwhichmayhaveaninternationalelement.
GERMINATE: ThreetimesayearsmallgroupsofartistswillbeofferedanopportunitytospendaroundtwoweekssomewhereinWalesdevelopinganideaorprojectwhichtheyhavealreadybegunworkingon,andwillsharetheirworkwithalocalaudience.TherewillbethreeGerminateprojectsayear,oneofwhichwillhaveaninternationalelement.

TherearecurrentlysevenongoingWalesLabprojects.TheseincludeprojectsaboutMexicanwrestlingballetdancers,thedefinitiveanswerto“Istherelifeafterdeath?”,aditchnearAberystwythforthrowingbodiesinto,replacingtheperformerswithtext-to-speechsoftware,anexplorationoftheDenbighAsylum,andInternetdatingscams.ProjectsaretakingplacethroughoutWales,fromDenbightoCastleMartin,CardiffAirporttoCilgerran,physicalspacetocyberspace;theonlylimitationsaretheartists’imaginations.
ThefirstWalesLabresidencytookplacelastNovemberinaformerpostofficeinCastlemartin,whereRachelHelenaWalshandOwainRoachholedthemselvesupforaweektobegindevelopmentonNorman&Judith,achancediscoveryinacharityshopof90unopenedRoyalMailFirstDayCoverssentfromNormantoJudithfromthe1960s-80s.

FIRSTROUND:WINNINGPROJECT
ThewinningprojectofthefirstroundofAssemblyisAdamsdown&Splott–theprojectwillbeaperformancedebateeventwithwhichlocalyoungpeoplewouldliketostartaconversationaroundalocalparkandthecontentiousissuesthathavearisenthere.Theyoungpeoplewantperceptionsaboutthemtochange,andwouldliketoberecognisedasbeingpartofthecommunitywhocanprovideasolution.
WearecurrentlyacceptingproposalsforAssembly2,whichwilltakeplaceinwestWales,soifyouliveinCarmarthenshire,Ceredigion,PembrokeshireorSwanseaandhaveanidea,whynotputinaproposal?

HehasengagedwithChekhovasawriteranddirectorthroughouthislife,inproductionsattheRoyalCourt,RiversideStudios,theRoyalShakespeareCompanyandtheRoyalNationalTheatre.TheonlyWelshwriterbesidesDylanThomaswhoseworkhasbeenstagedbytheRoyalNationalTheatre,hisplaysincludeTheSleepers’Den(RoyalCourt1965),OverGardensOut(RoyalCourt1968),SmallChange(RoyalCourt1976),KickforTouch(RoyalNationalTheatre1983),CardiffEast(RoyalNationalTheatre1997),CertainYoungMen(Almeida1999),TheYorkRealist(EnglishTouringTheatre2001),OriginalSin(TheCrucibleTheatre,Sheffield,2002)andAnotherDoorClosed(TheatreRoyalBath,2009).
HisworkhasrepeatedlyexaminedtheCardiffofhispastasa‘lostdomain’thatcanbeimaginedbutneverrevisited,andhisreturntodirectAProvincialLife(originallypresentedattheRoyalCourtin1966)markshisfirstcollaborationwithNationalTheatreWales.
PeterGillwasborninCardiffin1939,andbeganhisprofessionalcareerasanactor.Afterseveralyearsonstage,hebegantowriteanddirectwhileworkingattheRoyalCourt,wherehewasresponsibleforintroducingtheplaysofD.H.Lawrencetothetheatre,andpioneeredideasofpostmoderniststagingwithhisproductionofTheDuchessofMalfi.Hisfirstplay,TheSleepers’Den,wasstagedatthetheatrein1965,andhehascontinuedtopresentworkattheRoyalCourtthroughouthiscareer.HewasthefoundingdirectorofRiversideStudios,whichwasforaperiodoneofEurope’sleadingartscentres,mixingaprogrammeofhomegrowndramawithanextraordinaryrosterofinternationalartistsfromSamuelBecketttoTadeuszKantor,andoftheNationalTheatreStudio,whichquicklybecameoneofthemostimportantcentresforthedevelopmentofnewworkinBritain.

In1875,whenhewas15,hisfatherfledfromtownhiddenunderamatatthebottomofacartafterhisgrocerybusinessfailed.Ayearlatertherestofthefamily’shumiliationwascompletewhenaformerlodgerboughttheirhouseandturnedthemout.
StayingoninTaganroguntilhewas19,Chekhovwasalsodisplacedinanothersense.Hisgrandfatherhadbeenaserf,partofRussia’svastunderclassliterallyownedbythecountry’slandownersuntilTsarAlexanderIIfreedthemin1861andcreatedaworkforceforthehugenetworkofrailwaysheplanned.Theywereroutinelycharacterisedaslazy,sly,drunk,ignorantandsuspicious.ButChekhovwaseducated,soberandindustrious.HeenrolledasamedicalstudentinMoscowandbeganwritinghumorouspiecesforsmallmagazines.Workinghiswayupthemarketandtheladderofliteraryambition,heturnedouthundredsofstoriesbeforewritinghisfourgreatplays:TheSeagull,UncleVanya,ThreeSistersandTheCherryOrchard.ThelongstoryMyLifeoutofwhichPeterGillmadehisplayAProvincialLifecamejustasChekhovwasblossomingasadramatisttowardstheendofhislife.Inallofthemyou’llfindmanyareferencetomedicine(whichheregardedashis‘wife’,withliteraturehis‘mistress’),toeducation(hebuiltthreeschools)andeventorailways.You’llalsofindpre-echoesoftheRussianRevolutionandastonishinglytopicalreferencestotheenvironmentortotheimpossibilityofjusticeandMammonlivingtogether.

Whatgetsyouupinthemorning?Myalarmclock.
Whathasbeenthemostamazingpieceoftheatreyouhaveeverseen?Mostamazingisahardonebutmostinfluentialwouldbe‘Inyourrooms/Uprising’byHofeshShechter.ItreallycapturedmyimaginationandhadalastingeffectonthekindofworkthatIwantedtomake.
HowdidyoustartgettinginvolvedwiththeNTWTEAMproject?IfirstgotinvolvedwithTEAMafterbeinginvolvedwithSwanseaAssembly.Ihadbeenwantingtosetupascratchtheatrenightforawhile,andhadstartedagroupontheonlinecommunitytogaugeinterest.IwasapproachedbyNTWwhosaidthatTEAMwouldliketosupporttheeventswhichwasreallyhelpfulaspeoplestartedpayingmoreattentiontotheevents,astheyhadNTWbacking.SincebeingpartofTEAM,IhavehadloadsofopportunitytodothingsIjustwouldn’tgottohaveotherwise.AparticularhighpointofthiswasgoinguptotheEdinburghFringeFestivallastsummer.Igottoseesomeamazingshowsandmeetsomereallycoolandinterestingpeople.IwouldrecommendTEAMtoanyonewhowantstobeinvolvedinthetheatrescenehereinWales.Youwouldbejoiningagroupofveryfriendly,verygivingpeople.

WhatistheSwanseaartsscenelikeatthemoment?Whatshouldwebecheckingoutandwhereshouldwebegoing?TheSwanseaartssceneisabitallover,itistherebutyoudohavetolookcloselyandhardtoseeeverythingthatisgoingon.Wehavealotofnewartsspacespoppingupatthemoment,aswellasseeingmorecompaniesemergingandcreatingwork.It’sanexcitingtimetobeinSwansea.IwouldsaytokeepyoureyespeeledonSwanseaHighStreet,asitnowhastheEveningPostTheatreandVolcano’s229space.TheregenerationofSwanseaHighStreetalsoshowspromiseofmoreexcitingthingsopeningupsoon.
YourunaneventcalledScratchThatItch.Tellusabouthowthatstarted,youraspirationsforthefutureandwherewecancatchthenextperformances.ScratchThatItchstartedoutasagroupontheNTWcommunityasIwastryingtoseeiftherewasinterestinhavingascratchnightinsouthWales.TheinspirationtoholdthenightscameafterseeingaDirtyProtestevent.AftergettingbackingfromNTWTEAM,westartedputtingoneventsofferingpeopleanopportunitytoshowideasintheearlystagesofdevelopment.Thenightgivesperformerstheopportunitytoreceivefeedbackfromtheaudiencethatcanhelpyoudevelopthepieceinthefuture.WehaveheldeventsinSwansea,CardiffandatWatusiFestival.HopefullyinthefuturewewillbeabletoholdeventsalloverWales,creatingasafeplaceforthecommunitytocometogetherandsupporteachotherandfindoutwhateveryoneisgettingupto.Atthemoment,ScratchThatItcheventsareheldeveryothermonth,butifyouwantaneventheldinyourcityoryoujustwanttohurrythenextonealong,[email protected]
NTWTEAMmembersareatthecentreofeverythingwedo.It’sforanyonewhoisinterestedinbeingpartofNTW,gettinginvolvedintheatre,ormeetingnewpeople.
Everywherewego,werecruitandworkalongsideateamoflocalambassadors.Thesearethepeopleattheheartofourshows,wholettheircommunitiesknowaboutourproductions,whovisitrehearsalstogivefeedbackandwhohelpusplanforthefuture.
TellusaboutwhatwecanexpectfromaScratchThatItchnight.ScratchThatItchnightoffersyoualookatoriginalpiecesthatpeoplearedevelopingatthemoment.Thenightsarerelaxedwithanopendoorpolicy,soifsomethingisnottoyourtaste,youcanpoptothebarandgrabadrinkbeforecomingbacktoseethenextperformer.ItisagreatwaytomeetotherpeopleinthetheatresceneinWalesandfindingoutwhateveryoneisgettingup.Itisaveryfriendly,forgivingenvironmentofpeoplewhoaretheretosupporteachotherandhelpthingsdevelop.Overall,itisjustagoodnightoutwithfriendsthatgivesyouanopportunitytoseesomebrandnewtheatre.Ihopetoseeyouatthenextone.

Whatgetsyouupinthemorning?Themainthingthatgetsmeupinthemorning,ifit’snotanaggressivealarmandanobsceneamountofcoffee,wouldbethewantingtoknowmoreaboutanythingandeverything.IknowIwanttobeinvolvedintheatreasmycareer,butIjustdon’tknowwhataspect,soIgetuptolearnmoreandgainexperience.
Whathasbeenthemostamazingpieceoftheatreyouhaveeverseen?Itisreallyhardtonarrowitdowntojustonespecificpieceoftheatre.Ihaveseensomuchovertheyears,someIhaveenjoyed,someloved,somehatedbutIthinkthemostamazingpieceoftheatrehastobesomethingthatchangedmyperceptionofwhattheatrecouldbe.WhenIwasyoungIhadonlyeverseentraditionaltheatre,musicalsorthepantomimeatChristmas.DuringmyGCSEsweweretakentotheBirminghamReptoseeHysteriabyTerryJohnson,andittotallyblewmymind.IsatinamazementasIwatchedclocksslideoffthewallsontothefloorandthebackofthesetopenuptofindasteamtrainheadingrightforus.Inevernewthiskindofthingwaspossible,andIjustwantedtoseemore.
HowdidyoustartgettinginvolvedwiththeNTWTEAMproject?Andwhatwouldyousaytootherswhomaybethinkingofgettinginvolved?IactuallygotinvolvedwithNTWTEAMthroughafriendwhohadhelpedoutalotduringtheshowsinyear1.Iwasn’tsurewhatIcoulddowithNTWTEAM,butIknewIjustwantedtogetinvolvedinwhateverIcould.TheopportunitytocontributetotheWord4Wordeventcameup

andmyfriendNatalieStoneandIjumpedatthechance.WehavereceivedsomuchsupportfromDevinda,notonlywithinNTWbutalsowithdevelopingourskillsforourowntheatrecompany.Myadvicetoanybodythatwantedtogetinvolvedwouldbetoe-mailDevinda,lethimknowyou’reinterestedandhewillalwaysfindthetimetogettoknowyouandtellyouaboutanyopportunities.Otherwise,justjointheTEAMgrouponthecommunity,yougettomeetotherTEAMmembersandfindoutwhateveryoneisuptoalloverWalesandhowyoucangetinvolved.
YouareworkingasthePromoteronAProvincialLife.Tellusalittleaboutwhatthatinvolvessofar,andwhatyouknowabouttheshowanditscontent.Iwassoexcitedtohavebeengiventheopportunitytoworkonsuchanamazingproduction.PromotingNTW17involvesaspectsIhaveneverhadtheopportunitytodobefore.Mydutiesincludespreadingthewordoftheshow,meetingandcreatingrelationshipswithpeopleandorganisations,alertingothersofopportunitieswithinthecommunityandtocreateabuzzabouttheshowaroundCardiff.NotonlydoestheshowbringbackthehugelyrespectedPeterGilltohishometown,butwillhaveanimpressive17-nightruninthebrandnewShermanCymru.Witha15strongcastplus12TEAMensemblemembers,magnificent19thcenturycostumes,andabeautifulandthought-provokingscript,thenightisguaranteedtowhollytakeyouinto1890sRussiaandisapiecethatshouldnotbemissed.
YouhaveaputtogetheraTEAMmarketingcrewforthisshow.Whatkindofmarketingideashavetheycomeupwith?Theyhavecomeupwithsomanyideas,fromthebasicsofwhototargetandhow,tothengettingtopeopleonthestreetsandspreadingtheword.Theyhavecomeupwithanexcitingcompetition,ideasforapop-upshop,flashmobs,happeningsandthelistgoeson.IfeelsoluckytohavesuchagreatTEAMbehindme.
YourunaneventcalledWord4Word.Tellusabouthowthatstarted,youraspirationsforthefutureandwherewecancatchthenextperformance.Word4WordbeganinitiallyasaNationalTheatreWalesevent.OpeningituptoTEAMwelcomedfreshideasandthechanceforustogetinvolvedinanexciting,evolvingevent.SincetakingitoverinSeptember,wehavegonefromstrengthtostrength,beingabletoofferprizes,changevenues,createthemesandbuildourownskillswithinpromotionandeventorganising.Word4Wordoffersthechanceforpoets,spokenwordartistsandactor/writerswhoareeitherjuststartingoutoremergingtosharetheirworkinaninvitingfriendlyspace.Intermsofaspirationsforthefuture,wejustwanttospreadthewordandgetmorepeopleinvolvedwhohavepossiblyneverperformedbefore.ThenexteventwillbeatGwdihwon24thApril.Keepyoureyespeeledformoreinformation.

Usually,I’mleftpushedtowardsthedarkestdustierpartofthehouse,amongstforgottenclothsandunattendedboxes.Fullypackedwithahistoryofadventuresintact,zippedupwithanelasticarmband‘PleaseContact’Equippedwithwheelstorollloyaltytomyfamily,similartotheshoesandtheowner,precisesize,Theircongealerwhilsttheytravelthroughthelongwindynights,Departedlongbeforejetenginesstarted,travelledin-betweencamels,starsandtrafficlights,Redsandtowavesofcolourfuloceansintoconcreteconfusing,browntoblueeyesstudiedmyinternal.Razorsharpfingerscontinuetotickleme,centurieslaterthelaughterstillappear,Thoughtitwasawelcomegestureatthetime.Illiterateexpertsaslifetaughtmyownerbodylanguageandhardworkethics,FirsthandlewitnesstothemanyencounterstheSeaman’sfaced,religionburieddeepwithintheirrootsSandalstoboots,ultimatesacrificefortheirfamily,HeroesfrombothWorldWarsdisguisedinHIS-STORYparalyzed,Proudtoexperiencetheiroffspringgraduatetoachieve,reinventedgenerationreadytoteach,Allergictodust,I’mstillinuse,insecureasifIwasoutoffashionrollingthroughtheterminal.Myownerkneeleddownandsaidwegoinghome,that’swhenwegothighlighted,whenamanpointedafingertowardsusyellingoutTerrorist.
DeGabaywillfeatureasite-specificexplorationoftheButetown/CardiffBayarea,withafocusontheyounglivesanddreamsthatflowthroughit.Musicandpoetrywillbecentraltotheperformance.Audienceswillencounterintimatemomentsofperformanceandspectacularlarger-scaleeventsasthestreetsarebroughttolifebythekindsofyoungmenthatmanypeopletrytoavoid.Forexample,amomentwhereeachaudiencememberisexploringthecontentsofathousand‘messagesinbottles’thatseemtohavewashedupontheCardiffBayshore,mightgivewaytoanothermomentwherehundredsofpeopleburstintothesamesongondozensofstreetcorners,asahugeimageoftheseaisprojectedontoButetown’slargesttowerblock.Overall,thepiecewillbeapoeticre-creationofamuchmisunderstoodurbanarea,andaninsightintothehiddenlives,hopesandfearsofyoungSomalimen.

Whatgetsyouupinthemorning?Aloveforlife,aloveformyfamily.
What’syourcreativebackground?IstudiedFilmandTelevisionatInternationalFilmSchoolWales.IwasluckyenoughtopayformywaythroughuniversitybyapplyingforsmallgrantstodeliverParticipatoryArtsprojectstoyoungpeople.
AftergraduatingIattemptedtoenterthetelevisionindustry,butbecamedespondentanddecidedthatIwouldgobacktouniversity.IthenstudiedDesignforInteractiveMediaatUWIC.Aftergraduatingforthesecondtime,threeothersandIsetupaSocialEnterprisecalledCommunityHelpsItselfwhichwasanArtsandMediabasedorganisationwhichdeliveredParticipatoryArtsprojects.
HowdidyoustartgettinginvolvedwiththeNTWTEAMproject?Andwhatwouldyousaytootherswhomaybethinkingofgettinginvolved?IheardthatNTWwereholdingsomeintroductoryworkshopsinButetownandalthough,atthetime,IhadnorealinterestinTheatre,IdecidedthatI’dgoalongtoseewhatwashappening.Ihadagoodfeelingabouttheprojectthatwashappening,NTW10–TheSoulExchange,andIwasluckyenoughtogetinvolved.NTWtalkaboutdevelopingalegacywithButetownandthecreativecommunitysomyselfandKeithMurrellapproachedNTWwithanideathatwewantedtodevelop,basedontheAssemblyformatdevelopedbyNTW.Iwouldurgeanyonewhohasaninterest,notonlyintheatre,butanyformofcreativitytogetinvolvedinTEAMastheopportunitiesareendless.

YouareworkingasCreativeAssociateonDeGabay.Tellusalittleaboutwhatthathasinvolvedsofar.IhavebeenveryfortunatetobeemployedasCreativeAssociateonaprojectthatIwouldhavevolunteeredtoworkon–DeGabay.Myrolehasbeentohelpdeveloptheskillsofthefivepoetswhoareatthecoreoftheproject,bothaswritersandperformers.WehavealsobeenthinkingaboutwhatcareersthethepoetswouldliketodevelopasaresultofbeinginvolvedinDeGabay.
YourunaneventcalledIdeasExchange.Tellusabouthowthatstarted,youraspirationsforthefutureandwherewecancatchthenextperformance.IdeasExchangecamewhenKeithMurrellandIwereinvolvedinTheSoulExchangeandattendingtheNTWAssemblyeventthatcoincidedwithit.Wewereimpressedwiththeformatandwhatwasachievedonthenight.SowedecidedtoapproachNTWandseeiftheywouldsupportusindevelopingaseriesofAssembly-styleevents.IdeasExchangeoffersthecreativecommunityofButetownandsurroundingareastheopportunitytobeinvolvedinaprofessionalevent,developingskillsinperformance,writing,productionandeventmanagementaswellasexploringrelevantcommunityissues.
