Scholarships Fair: Bolashak, Konrad-Adenauer, DAAD
Any hesitation about studying abroad
is typically related to the source of
funding. Most students do not know
that there are many opportunities to
get financial support and they may
actually apply for scholarships as
foreign students. In order to provide a
platform for communication and
acquaint students with possible
scholarships on April 4, the Student
Ministry of Education and CAC held
the Scholarship fair with participation
of more than 150 students. The
representatives of the Center for
international programs (Bolashak,
intergovernmental grants, DAAD,
Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and other
scholarships) told about admission
procedures, selection criteria, tips, and
advice on how to succeed in creating
the most successful submissions and
winning the scholarship.

“Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort.”
- Kelly McGonigal
Kelly McGonigal, PhD, is a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University, an
award-winning science journalist, and a leading expert on the mind-body relationship. Her
teaching and writing focus on the applications of psychological science to personal health
and happiness, as well as public policy and social change.
Kelly McGonigal is an expert at “science help”, the industry in which scientists try to break
down their research so that so-called “average Joe” can understand and use it. CAC
recommends the book “The Willpower Instinct”. Here are some insights of it:
Most people think of willpower as the ability to resist temptations. However, that’s only one
third of the deal.
McGonigal puts willpower into 3 distinct categories:
1. “I won’t” power
2. “I will” power
3. “I want” power
,
JANUARY 2018
Book Recommendation
CAC
Communicate Advance Change
“I won’t” power is the willpower you already know: It’s what you use when you resist that
cookie on the conference table, the urge to watch the next episode of Breaking Bad, or to
swing by McDonald’s on your way home.
The pause-and-plan response
Have you ever felt followed by someone and wanted to just run home as quickly as
possible?
That’s your fight-or-flight response, and it’s triggered by stress, for example in dangerous
situations, or in our modern world, being afraid to miss a deadline.
Kelly McGonigal says there’s an alternate version of this though: the pause-and-plan
response.
It gives you that short time buffer you need to make the better decision.
This is your biological willpower instinct, and like your gut, it can be trained. However,
since willpower is like a muscle, it does get exhausted over time.
This is why your decisions get worse later in the day. Some ways to stock up your
willpower to the maximum are:
1. Eating healthy food, especially low-glycemic foods.
2. Meditating for as little as 11 hours over several sessions.
3. Exercising regularly.
4. Getting a good night of quality sleep — every night.
5. Spending time with someone who has strong willpower.
Past good behavior can’t be an excuse for present bad behavior.
Let’s say you’re trying to quit alcohol and you do incredibly well all week.
You resist the temptation to go to a bar with coworkers on Wednesday, you get through
your gym workout the day after, and are highly motivated to lose those extra pounds.
So on Sunday, what do you do? You reward yourself with a beer, because you’ve done so
well. This is the worst thing you could do.
Giving yourself a reward that drives you away from your long-term goal is counter-
productive and not a good strategy to win. As your reward for taking 7 steps forward, you’re taking 1 step back.
The message is to be aware of your attitude, because when you do well, you get lazy.
That doesn’t mean you can’t be proud of your accomplishments, but don’t use your past
successes as an excuse to fail today.

How to Pass the Job Interview Successfully?
Dear students,
some of you are graduating very soon, some of you
are planning to find a job for summer break. So we
decided to share with you main tips on passing job
interview successfully, which were often mentioned
during the latest semiannual Mock Interview Week
(01.04-05.04.2019) by HR and Line Managers of local
companies.
Prepare “Self-story”
It is a prepared 2-3 min speech to the most common
questions like “Tell me about yourself” or “Describe
yourself”, which is a chance to catch attention/interest of
the recruiter.
“Do Homework”
You should do preliminary research on the company and position you are applying to. Read
carefully Job Description. Be ready to answer some general questions as: What was its last
year revenue? What are its major projects? Why exactly are you aiming at a given
department or a business unit? How your previous experience correlates with the vacant
position?
Provide examples
It is highly recommended to support your work or life experience with concrete cases,
results, achievements, quantitative measures, outcomes, what you have learned eventually
to be more argumentative.
Take care of your “Body Language”
It is important that your actions throughout the interview are in line with the message you
want to send. Focus on controlling excess movement, and avoid fidgeting, talking with your
hands, pointing finger or tapping your feet. Sit up straight in your chair with your feet
resting flat on the floor. Rest your arms at your side or fold your hands on the table if that is
more comfortable for you. Be careful to avoid slouching or sitting back in your chair, as
that can give the interviewer the impression that you don’t care. Finally, make eye contact
whenever anyone says something to you and when you are talking to someone. Making eye
contact shows that you are listening and that you feel comfortable talking to the interviewer.
