Design Considerations for a Network Connected Sales Kiosk using GE Energy Power Supplies and Point of Load (POL) Converters

Creating a Micron Technology RealSSD™ Memory Subsystem for Lattice ECP3 FPGAs in Embedded Applications

Using advanced communications and inventory management it has become popular to provide sales kiosks for a wide range of products. Movie ticket purchase at the multiplex, DVD rentals at the grocery store and snacks from ever popular vending machines at the gas station are just some of the more visible examples of this sales technique.

The design of a network connected sales kiosk needs to address several key requirements including security, environmental monitoring, simplified user interfaces, low-cost and low-power. Advanced features might even include video conferencing, voice recognition, speech

processing and communication with smart phones. The power systems for a sales kiosk must be able to reliably and cost effectively generate the variety of voltages required by the system while insuring high availability and security.

To better understand the design considerations for the power sub-system in a sales kiosk it is best to look at an example design. By observing some of the major requirements, constraints and trade-offs, during the architecture definition, and component selection we will be able to identify common design considerations that will apply during a wide range of similar system implementations.

In this paper we will look in detail at the design requirements of a sales kiosk, like that used in an airport terminal to sell a variety of convenience items. A detailed list of requirements will be developed in the Application Description section so that trade-off options can be highlighted in the Component Selection section.

Key components for the design will include the power sub-system, main processing board, touch LCD panel and communications system.

Low-cost, low-power, high-functionality FPGAs are finding their way into an ever broader set

of applications. Demanding hand-held consumer and industrial electronic devices are the fastest

growing applications segment today for this class of FPGA devices. The ability to combine all

processing, interface and complex computation functions into a single device, without requiring

high mask costs has been a boon to these fast moving audio/video oriented applications. Designs

using both the RealSSD embedded USB mass storage drives from Micron Technology, and the Lattice

ECP3 family of FPGAs can address even the most stringent low-cost, and high-reliability audio/video

applications.

In this application note we will explore and example application that uses a Micron RealSSD

mass storage drive and a Lattice ECP3 FPGA to implement a ruggedized video/audio picture frame

as a replacement for critical signage applications in industrial applications. This ruggedized version

of the popular consumer graphic picture frame can also communicate important time dependant

information in industrial factory applications (perhaps to warn or inform operators or technicians

during critical steps) without the need for a computer interface. These information frames can

be placed anywhere in the building where the sign content depends on the time or state of the

equipment or process.

Using Lattice Platform Manager and GE Energy POL DC-DC Converters to Create Power Subsystems for Embedded Applications

Design Considerations when using GE Energy Power Supplies and Point of Load (POL) Converters in High Reliability Data Storage Applications As users move more computing and data storage functions to remote network and cloud-based systems service providers must add large amounts of reliable data communications and storage hardware to satisfy growing demand. These high reliability requirements put additional demands on the power supply systems both at the chassis level and at the board level. Chassis supplies must have redundancy built-in so that a power fault can be isolated and power replaced by a redundant supply. Additionally, power systems should be monitored and tested automatically so that any early warning signs of potential problems can be used to avoid power outages. The design of a redundant supply system needs to address several key requirements and must address key cost and functionality trade-offs. Reliability must be increased without increasing cost too much. Some system requirements, like the ability to remove or add boards without powering down the system (which improves up time), must also be supported without increasing system complexity. In this paper we will look in detail at the design requirements of a data storage system, like that used to support cloud-based operations. A detailed list of requirements will be developed in the Application Description section so that trade-off options can be highlighted in the Component Selection section. Key components for the design will include the main power sub-system, chassis controller, and storage controller cards. The on-board power requirements (Power management and PoL converters) for the chassis controller and storage controller cards will also be covered where it helps to explain some of the main power supply design considerations.

Increasing reliability and availability requirements of modern embedded systems has put new demands on power subsystem designs. For example,

the traditional requirement for hot swap capabilities have now grown to include advanced features like voltage scaling to save power and improve reliability,

complex fault detection and logging features to simplify testing and field servicing. Advanced power system components, like the Lattice Platform Manager

and GE POL (Point of Load) DC-DC converters can support the growing need for advanced features in modern power subsystem designs.

This application note will use an example design of a power subsystem on a communications system monitor card to describe the key device selection

and design considerations required for these types of designs. Key features will include voltage scaling to save power during light load conditions, increased

supply accuracy to increase headroom needed during high dI/dt loads, and fault logging to improve

reliability and prevent unanticipated down time.

Key components for the design will include the Lattice Platform manager to sense and control

the power subsystem, GE Energy POL DC-DC converters to source the power rails on the printed

circuit board and Atmel Serial Flash memory to store power fault information during data logging.

Micron Product Longevity ProgramMicron’s PLP is designed to provide stable memory architectures for long-life applications like those in automotive, industrial, medical, and aerospace. Through PLP we make a range of DRAM, NAND, and NOR devices available for a minimum of 10 years.

Applications with extended life cycles face a challenge as the components designed appear to

go through constant change; whether from obsolescence, process shrinks, new features and even

industry consolidation. This adds up as you spend time, resources and dollars long after the product

has entered production.

Recognizing this need for product longevity Micron introduced the Product Longevity Program

for select DRAM, NAND and NOR memory devices available for a minimum of 10 years.

The 10-year lifecycles for Micron PLP products will begin when a product is introduced into the

PLP and will include extended notification and conversion timelines.

Given the longevity of devices in the PLP program, it may be necessary to transition the device

to a new silicon process node or move production to an alternate manufacturing facility. In these

cases, Micron will re-qualify the device and inform PLP customers of any corresponding ordering

part-number changes.

To facilitate these transitions, PLP-eligible products have extended notification and conversion

timelines; participating customers will be given 12 months from notification to place last-time orders

and an additional 12 months to receive last-time shipments. This notification period is double the

standard notification period, allowing customers two years to convert to newer products.

The line-card below summarizes the part families in the program..

Choosing the Right NANDUnderstand the right NAND from Micron's broad portfolio for your application

The increase in NAND demand and uses means there are now many NAND devices with differing performance capabilities and features. Designers need to have an understanding of the features and benefits of each type to select the right device for their application.

Density and feature set are the starting point in most designs - however, you soon run into terms SLC (one bit per cell), MLC (two bits per cell), TLC (three bits per cell) which refer to the how many bits are stored in a memory cell. Storing more bits per cell increases density, thus lowering overall cost, but also impacts device performance:

SLC has the highest performance and write endurance but the largest die size (and thus highest cost).

MLC is mainstream NAND, providing balanced performance for a wide range of cost-sensitive, high density applications.

TLC has the highest cell density, but the lowest performance and endurance specifications. Most often used in mass storage consumer applications (thumb drives or SD cards) with very high cost sensitivity.

NAND requires a controller to aid with array management, ECC, wear leveling, and other functions, but where the controller resides varies based on your design:

Discrete (raw) NAND requires an external controller to perform these functions (e.g. SLC, MLC, or TLC NAND).

Managed NAND solutions integrate a controller into the device to simplify design requirements e.g. ClearNAND, eMMC™, embedded USB.

Micron also develops several lines of Specialty NAND for specific applications:

Serial NAND—Low density SLC parts with a NOR-like serial interface.

eMLC—“endurance” MLC use special programming algorithms to extend write endurance; it is typically used in high-write workload enterprise applications.

When You Can’t Afford to Turn it OffEnabling long battery life in an “always-on” system means drawing very little active standby current. Fortunately, our LTC®3104 does just that: its buck regulator can deliver 300mA with up to 95% efficiency with a no load quiescent current of just 1.8µA when in Burst Mode® operation. Its 10mA low noise LDO adds just 1.0µA of quiescent current and can be powered from the buck output. The LTC3104’s wide 2.5V to 15V input voltage range accommodates a variety of input sources, makingit ideal for remote sensor networks, portable instruments and a wide range of battery-powered devices.

XL375 CC - 260 Watts without FansConvection Cooling Option Delivers 260 Watts Without Fans

The new Convection Cooling Option for the XL375 family delivers 260 watts across all output voltages and eliminates the fans and fan controllers needed to cool conventional power supplies, saving cost and freeing up valuable component space. Doing away with fans and related components and circuitry is significant to designers tasked with increasing the MTBF and decreasing the noise of products (fans may fail, and they generate most of the audible sound in contemporary designs).

OEMs can design in both convection-cooled and fan-cooled power supplies that use the same very compact, low profile 3.3” x 5” x 1.5” packaging, connectors and layout, saving time and cost. The very low profile packaging is ideally suited to 1U product designs and makes the system designer’s job much easier.

The Convection Cooling Option gives OEMs a distinct packaging and cost benefit while also reducing overall power consumption and cooling requirements for applications such as industrial automation, telecommunications, gaming systems, security and surveillance systems, and network servers. Our unique technology gives OEM engineers new flexibility in power system design that pays real competitive dividends in their final products.

All models also include Active Current Sharing to allow up to four supplies to be operated in parallel for high output applications. The Active OR-ing mosfet board option is available for N+1 applications. Both 5V standby and 12V auxiliary outputs can be wired Or-able when the main output is disabled. Synchronous rectification delivers exceptionally high efficiency: up to 93% in some models.

The MachXO2 family of programmable logic devices is optimized for low density

applications, with an unprecedented mix of low cost, low power and high system

integration. Now, with 10 new reference and demo designs, you can complete your

design faster than ever.

Microprocessors often have a limited number of general purpose I/O (GPIO)

ports that reduce pin count and shrink package size, but limit the number of I/Os to

which a microprocessor can be connected. To allow more I/Os to be connected to

microprocessors, I/O expanders or port expanders are used to provide I/O expansion

capability. Most generic GPIO expanders use low pin count protocols, such as I2C or

SPI, as the interface to the master. They allow designers to save the GPIO ports on the

microprocessor for other critical tasks.

I2C SLAVE PERIPHERAL USING EMBEDDED FUNCTION BLOCK (LATTICE REFERENCE DESIGN RD1124): Provides a programmable solution for serial expansion of GPIOs

Uses an Inter IC Communication (I2C) interface between the microprocessor and the GPIOs

Provides additional control and monitoring capabilities for a microprocessor when it does not have sufficient GPIOs to do the job

Provides an I2C memory interface to the microprocessor

SPI SLAVE PERIPHERAL USING EMBEDDED FUNCTION BLOCK (LATTICE REFERENCE DESIGN RD1125): Provides a programmable solution for serial expansion of GPIOs

Uses a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus between the microprocessor and the GPIOs

Provides additional control and monitoring capabilities for the microprocessor when it does not have sufficient GPIOs to do the job.

Provides a SPI memory interface to the microprocessor

RAM-TyPE INTERFACE FOR EMBEDDED USER FLASH MEMORy (LATTICE REFERENCE DESIGN RD1126): Utilizes the User Flash Memory (UFM) block (available on MachXO2™-640/U and higher density devices)

UFM block connects to the device core through the Embedded Function Block (EFB) WISHBONE interface. If desired, users can also access the UFM block independently through the hardened JTAG, I2C and SPI interfaces of the device.

Facilitates user access to the MachXO2 EFB UFM module without the knowledge of WISHBONE protocol.

Scan barcode for more PL613 family information

Programmable/Customizable 3-PLL Clock with up to 8 LVCMOS OutputsThe PL613-XX is an advanced 3-PLL design based on Micrel’s PicoPLL, the world’s smallest programmable clock, technology. This advanced technology allows the PL613-XX to fit in to a small 3x3mm QFN package for high performance, low-power, small form factor applications.

The PL613 family options include PL613-01 which offers up to 8 outputs or a combination of outputs and OE pins (i.e. 4 outputs and 4 OEs), 4 programming configurations that allows on-the-fly frequency switching between the 4 configuration, and a Master OE (MOE) or a Master Power Down (PDB) features.

PL613-21, on the other hand, offers up to 4 outputs where each output can operate at a different voltage level (1.8V ~ 3.3V). In addition, the unique power down feature of the PL613-21 allows the user to shut down individual PLLs while disabling the corresponding clock output, using the PDB pins. This IC consumes less than 5mA with all PLLs and outputs running, and less than 5μA when they’re all turned off. The CLK1 on PL613-21 has the ability to generate kHz outputs and is ideal for generating 32.768KHz outputs.

The output drive strength on the PL613 family can also be individually programmed to “Low” (4mA), “Standard” (8mA) or “High” (16mA) drive. In addition, the disabled state of the clock outputs can be programmed as Hi-Z or Active-Low.

BENEFITS:

Replaces many oscillators and crystals

Saves Oscillator/Crystal Mfg. time

Faster to Market, if frequencies change

Matches Signal Strength with freq/loading, reduces system EMI

Supports multiple input voltage levels without additional passive components

Faster start up time with 32KHz signal than expensive 32KHz oscillators, while supporting other clocking requirements

Lowest Power consumption, Extends battery life

Supports multiple applications

Saves space

Fits any application

FEATURES:

3-PLLs, and up to 8 outputs

Customizable Frequencies

Short sample TAT

Individual programmable O/P Strength

Separate voltage level on each output

One 32KHz and multiple MHz frequency outputs in a single clock IC

Individual PDB pins to turn off each output and corresponding PLL

<5mA power consumption when all PLLs operating
