Objectives

To know about nuclear energy. To know the source of nuclear energy. To learn about the production of nuclear power. To know why nuclear energy should be an option . To observe the condition of nuclear plant worldwide. To analyze the future of nuclear energy in

Bangladesh.

Nuclear Energy

Nuclear Energy is a rare form of energy. It is the energy that stored in the center or

the nucleus of an atom. It is considered as worthiest alternative

source after fossil fuels.

How get Nuclear Energy ?

When nuclear reaction occurs whether fission or fusion, it produces large amount of energy.

Nuclear Fusion Two small nucleus

form into large

Nuclear FissionLarge nuclei into smallchain reactionTwo isotopes we use235U 239Pu

Sources of Nuclear Energy

Radioactive element mainly Uranium (U)& plutonium (Pu) .

Used their isotope for nuclear reaction. Make nuclear bombard. Found in Congo, Canada, U.S.A., U.K.,

Australia, Czechoslovakia and Portugal etc.

How Nuclear Energy Produced ?

A slow moving neutron induces fission in Uranium 235

Expanding Chain Reaction

The fission reaction produces more neutrons which can then induce fission in other Uranium atoms.

It is called a “Mouse Trap Chain Reaction”.

Worldwide Nuclear Power Reactors

There are 440 nuclear power reactors in 31 countries.

30 more are under construction. They account for 16% of the world’s

electricity. They produce a total of 351 GW (billion

watts) of electricity.

Why Nuclear Energy Should be an Option ?

Energy security is national security. Space requirement for nuclear power plant is less. Fuel required very small. Not affected by adverse weather condition. Well suited to meet large power demands. Nuclear energy is concentrated form of Energy.

Nuclear Energy & It’s Future Plan in Bangladesh

Plan to have two 1000 MW Russian nuclear power reactors in operation from 2018.

Building a nuclear power plant was first proposed in 1961.

The Rooppur site in Pabna district was selected in 1963.

In 2007 the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission proposed two 500 MW nuclear reactors for Rooppur by 2015, costs of US$ 0.9-1.2 billion for a 600 MW unit and US$ 1.5-2.0 billion for 1000 MW.

continued….

In March 2009 Russia made a formal proposal .

In May 2009 a bilateral nuclear cooperation agreement was signed with Russia.

A nuclear energy bill was introduced into parliament in May 2012.

continued….

Russia, China and South Korea had earlier offered financial and technical help to establish nuclear power.

Staff will be trained in Russia. In August 2012 a financing agreement was finalized.

continued….

Russia fund 85% of the estimated $1.5 billion for the first unit’s construction.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continues its close involvement with the project.

Is Bangladesh Ready For Nuclear Power Generation?

The factors which are not under the condition of Bangladesh :

National position Nuclear safety Management Funding and Financing Radiation protection

continued….

Environmental protection Emergency planning Security Radioactive waste Procurement etc.

Accidents

Some serious nuclear and radiation accidents have occurred. Nuclear power plant accidents include the Chernobyl disaster (1986), Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster (2011), and the Three Mile Island accident (1979). Nuclear powered submarine mishaps include the K-19 reactor accident (1961), the K-27 reactor accident (1968), and the K- 431 reactor accident (1985).

Conclusion

Though nuclear power plant has some disadvantages, it can be the key for overall development of a country. The life style of the people will be changed if there is no lack of electricity. If Bangladesh can reduce the adversity to establish the nuclear power plant it will reduce the dependence on natural gas. As in Bangladesh garment’s industry is a profitable sector so it can be a more profitable. Finally, we hope that Bangladesh will be a developed country in near future by proper utilization of nuclear energy.
