FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Theme: Jesus, who remained true in spite of temptation, gives us the
strength to do the same.
Lent is here. We all know it can be difficult at times to resist temptation.
So many things require our time and attention. And so many more things
call to us with the voice of persuasion, promising to make life less painful,
less onerous or less costly. The struggle to make the right choices can be
difficult.
There is a wonderful quote, attributed to many different people over the
years, that wisely states: “Never sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the
immediate.”
Never sacrifice the permanent … on the altar of the immediate.
Ten words-so simple, so seemingly easy to follow, and yet we still falter.
Adam and Eve faltered. Given everything in the Garden of Eden, they
were tempted with the possibility of more, and so they committed the first

Tema: Jesús, que permaneció fiel a pesar de la tentación,
nos da la fuerza para hacer lo mismo: Pero Pablo nos dice hoy que aunque el pecado entró en el mundo
y la muerte vino a todos, Dios no nos rechazó su gracia y envió a
su único Hijo al mundo para redimirnos. Jesús contrarrestó ese
primer pecado de desobediencia con un acto de obediencia per-
fecta, una obediencia que resistiría todas las tentaciones a lo largo
de toda su vida terrenal.
El hijo, aunque divino, también era humano, y el diablo lo sabía.
Hoy nos dan tres ejemplos del diablo tratando de tentarlo lejos de
su misión con cosas que en su inmediatez - tal vez parecía mucho
más atractiva que su camino previsto. Pero Jesús nunca cedió. Él
se negó a dejar que su amor perfecto se nublara por las vacías
promesas del diablo. Se negó a sacrificar lo eterno sobre el altar
de lo inmediato.
Todos enfrentamos nuestros propios desiertos con sus tentaciones
únicas. Nos resulta difícil obedecer nuestras conciencias y nues-
tras propias brújulas morales. Pero aquí está la cosa: no estamos
destinados a la desobediencia. Tenemos una elección, y tenemos
un modelo en Jesús y un defensor en el Espíritu Santo. En la me-
dida en que participamos en la vida de Cristo - a través del sacra-
mento del bautismo; Podemos negarnos a dejar que nuestro amor
se vea nublado por las vacías promesas del diablo.
Pero no podemos hacerlo solos. Necesitamos confiar en la ora-
ción; Sobre los sacramentos; Sobre las interacciones caritativas y
la fe compartida de amigos y familiares, en nuestra relación con
un Dios trino que nos ama, Y, en última instancia, en la gracia de
nuestro Dios.
Por lo tanto, mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, durante este
préstamo, pidamos al Señor: "Corazón nostrum secundum cor
tuum". De esta manera, recibiremos un corazón firme y miseri-
cordioso, atento y generoso, un corazón que no está cerrado pero
abierto al Espíritu Santo.
Cardinal ofrece Dispensación por
Solemnidad de San Patricio
El cardenal Dolan está ofreciendo a los católicos en la
archidiócesis una dispensa de abstenerse de la carne
para la solemnidad de San Patricio, patrón de
la archidiócesis, el viernes 17 de Marzo, que
cae durante la Cuaresma.
En una carta escrita a los párrocos y adminis-
tradores de las parroquias el 25 de enero, el
cardenal les pidió que notificaran a sus feligre-
ses de su acción.
El cardenal también señaló que "el ayuno y la
abstinencia de la carne los viernes son una im-
portante obligación de la Cuaresma por cada edad y
salud de los católicos", e instó a los pastores y admi-
nistradores a "Alentar fuertemente a nuestro pueblo" a
seguir las directrices.

Theme: Jesus, who remained true in spite of tempta-
tion, gives us the strength to do the same. But Paul tells us today that though sin entered the world and
death came to all, God did not withhold his grace from us
and sent his only Son into the world to redeem us. Jesus
countered that first sin of disobedience with an act of perfect
obedience – an obedience that would resist every temptation
throughout the whole of his earthly life.
The son, though divine, was also human and the devil knew
it. We are given three examples today of the devil trying to
tempt him away from his mission with things that in their
immediacy – perhaps seemed far more enticing than his in-
tended path. But Jesus never gave in. He refused to let his
perfect love be clouded by the empty promises of the devil.
He refused to sacrifice the eternal on the altar of the immedi-
ate.
We all face our own deserts with their unique temptations.
We find it difficult to obey our consciences and our own
moral compasses. But here’s the thing: we are not fated to
disobedience. We have a choice, and we have a model in
Jesus and an advocate in the Holy Spirit. In as much as we
share in the life of Christ – through the sacrament of baptism,
we can refuse to let our love be clouded by the empty prom-
ises of the devil.
But we cannot do it alone. We need to rely on prayer, on the
sacraments, on the charitable interactions and shared faith of
friends and family, on our relationship with a triune God
who loves us; and, ultimately, on the grace of our God.
Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, during this Lent, let
us all ask the Lord: “Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tuum.”
Make our hearts like yours. In this way, we will receive a
heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a
heart which is not closed but open to the Holy Spirit.
Cardinal offers Dispensation for
Solemnity of St. Patrick Cardinal Dolan is offering Catholics in the arch-
diocese a dispensation from abstaining
from meat for the Solemnity of St. Pat-
rick, patron of the archdiocese, on Friday
March 17, which falls during Lent.
In a letter written to pastors and admi-
nistrators of parishes Jan. 25, the cardinal
asked them to notify their parishioners of
his action.
The cardinal also noted that “fasting and absti-
nence from meat on Fridays are important Lenten
obligations for every Catholic bound age and
health,” and he urged the pastors and administra-
tors to “Strongly encourage our people" to follow
the directives.
