International Study Experience

Combining tuition and experiential learning in a global context the International Study Experience is an intensive tailored programme currently delivered in collaboration with our academic partner Fordham University, NY.

Business Negotiations

Negotiation is a dialogue to discover common ground among parties with differing aims, needs and perspectives in order to achieve a mutually satisfactory solution. Drawing on Harvard University’s Program on Negotiation, this module employs an experiential approach to advance candidates’ negotiation proficiency. Negotiation is a valuable leadership and management skill, which is employed in a wide range of business contexts.

Company-based Consultancy

The Inter-Disciplinary Consultancy Project (IDCP) is the capstone of the Executive MBA Programme. The primary course objectives are: to integrate the discipline-based, largely functional, skills already acquired in the EMBA programme; to provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge, expertise and experience in the context of a real business situation and to develop the interpersonal skills needed for effective cross-functional teamwork.

Cormac Kearns, Managing Director, Masonite Ireland

“Superb in every single aspect, extremely well organised, excellent exposure to lecturers. The trip was well above my expectations - an immense experience.”

Paul Cadden, Business Manager (BMW), Rentokil Pest Control

“Negotiation is critical to success in any business. The Business Negotiations module has increased my confidence in negotiating with others.”

Treasa Kirk, Senior Inspector, Department of Education & Skills

“The interdisciplinary consultancy project has been for me the flagship, whereby all previous learning makes better sense.”

Hospitality

The Hospitality Stream aims to expand students’ ability to maximise the potential of their business within the hospitality sector (and the tourism industry at large), by using performance indicators and reviewing up-to-date practical management tools.

The NUI Galway Executive MBA and Your Career

The Executive MBA represents a common factor in the careers of many successful managers in large multinational companies, biomedical device companies, SMEs, government agencies, hotel and hospitality, NGOs, professional consultancies, and arts organisations.

“The MBA programme arms you with the multidisciplinary tools of the broader organisation. It is particularly beneficial for people in disciplines which do not get the exposure to report on the total business. It is also a great opportunity to take stock and leverage experience and learning to develop strategies and think outside the box. An MBA is a stepping stone, and will improve earning potential if you continue to invest in on-going learning and the application of the knowledge. It was a great investment for me—I would not have been considered for my current role without it.”

Eileen Sweeney

Marketing Manager, Americas with Aerogen, Chicago, USA

Executive MBA Graduate 2014 Eileen Sweeney worked as a brand manager for medical device company Aerogen, Galway. In 2012, she decided to do an MBA at NUI Galway. The NUI Galway MBA is a versatile programme with a broad learning base that provides an acknowledged career stepping stone. The MBA has helped Eileen broaden her skills set by providing a flavour of other aspects and disciplines within business. As such it offers a greater opportunity to develop a leadership role.

While Eileen admits that the programme was challenging, she also believes that the MBA was well worth undertaking and she would not hesitate to recommend it to others. “You don’t take on a challenge this big without having an expectation that it will help you in your career. I am a great believer in always improving your learning and an MBA is an interesting choice for many reasons. It’s a versatile Master’s with a broad learning base that provides an acknowledged career stepping-stone”.

Another positive highlight by Eileen is the learning environment. “We had a small class of 30 people, drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds. I gained as much from class interaction and my colleagues’ inputs as I did from our lecturers. I also found the presentations by industry leaders inspirational”.

Since completing the NUI Galway Executive MBA Eileen has taken up the role of Marketing Manager, Americas with Aerogen, based out of the Chicago office. “I continue to use my MBA as a reference point when developing and executing company strategy. For me the MBA acted as a springboard for my career. It consolidated my work experience into a recognizable entity”.

Mike Parkinson

Operational Excellence Lead, Transitions Optical Asia

Executive MBA Graduate 2012 In 2013 Mike Parkinson took an expatriate promotion as Operations Manager moving from Transitions Optical in Tuam to one of their global sites in Manila in the Philippines within one year of completing the NUI Galway MBA in 2012. Before taking the promotion, Mike was a senior manager on the Transition Optical Tuam leadership team, with over 20 years experience across operations, engineering and logistics. He managed over 300 staff in the Philippines with responsibility for imbibed operations, line engineering, technology engineering and total site packaging operations.

In mid 2015 he took on a new role taking responsibility for rolling out Operational Excellence in Transitions facilities in Asia, dividing his time between Philippines and Thailand.

“Initially it took a few months for my family to adapt to the ex-pat life here in Manila, but we are all well settled in now. It’s a great opportunity and it’s one that was made all the more possible by having an MBA”.

Reflecting on his decision to do the NUI Galway MBA, Mike states: “The international recession was a catalyst for me to get my act together to equip myself to widen my horizons, improve my career prospects and my future employability.”

As Mike sees it, an MBA gives you the edge when it comes to an interview for a promotion. “Most organisations see it as an advantage. The knowledge you build as part of the learning process not only influences others and makes you more effective, but it also gives you more confidence and helps set yourself apart from the crowd.”
