NuLLIfIRe Meets austRaLIaN staNdaRdsAS4100-1998 (Steel Structures), sets out the minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, erection and modification of steelwork in structures in accordance with the limit states design method.

Within this Standard, Section 12 pertains to steel building elements which require a fire resistance level (FRL). For protected steel members and connections, the thickness of protection material is required to be greater than or equal to that required to give a period of structural adequacy (PSA) equal to the required FRL.

The PSA of protected steel members is determined using the fire test methods as specified in AS1530.4-2005 (Methods for Fire Test on Building Materials, Components and Structures).

In order to ascertain when a protected steel member reaches the limiting temperature, a fire test is performed within a furnace which simulates a building fire. The results of the test are then interpolated using linear regression analysis.

Remedial Building Services Australia are the proud exclusive Australasian supplier/installers of Nullifire Australia. We are pleased to announce that in recent months Nullifire has enhanced it’s compliance as per Australian Standards (AS).

VeRMICuLIte sPRay> High film build means less clearance available (minimum thickness

10mm).

> Low coverage & high wastage (20kg bag covers approx. 3m² @15mm thickness allowing for 15-20% wastage).

> High weight factor (see comparison table).

> Lower production rates per lineal metre compared to thin film intumescents, due to slower application rates and drying times (film builds above 20mm may take many days to cure depending on site conditions).

> Thick films above 15mm may require mechanical reinforcement to ensure integrity of the coating. This may thus require an increase in the amount of steel used in construction, thus increasing costs.

> Application process causes significant disruption to other trades working in the vicinity due to excessive material ‘scatter’.

fIRe ResIstaNt PLasteRBOaRds> Minimum board thickness is 13mm, therefore less clearance available

(2x13mm boards required for a 1hr FRL).

> Wastage can be extensive depending on steel configuration.

> High weight factor (see comparison table).

> Lower production rates per lineal metre compared to thin film intumescents, due to labour intensive cutting and fixing system process. Difficult to fit over steel connections e.g. cleats, struts, braces etc.

> Susceptible to damage by other trades during fitting and difficult to repair to ensure integrity of the FRL is not compromised.

It is worthwhile noting whether the fire rating product you are considering for your structural steel has been tested to AS1530.4-2005 and assessed in accordance with AS4100-1998. If not, the product may not perform to the standard which you expect. Nullifire S707, however, has been tested in the furnaces of registered Australian testing authorities and accredited to AS1530.4-2005 using AS4100-1998 as the testing criteria.

eNVIRONMeNtaL asPeCtNullifire S707 has a VOC content of 13-14gms/litre which would be viewed very favourably for inclusion in Green Star Rated projects. For further information on the Green Building Council of Australia, please visit www.gbca.org.au

Remedial Building Services are specialists in fire protection services for the construction industry with vast experience in evaluating and supplying the right solutions. Remedial’s fire division has been certified by the peak industry body - Certifire - and their credentials have now seen them be awarded with the exclusive rights in Australia to supply and install Nullifire.

Remedial Building Services are CertiFire Australia CA033 approved applicators of thin film intumescent coatings for structural steel, recognising the fact that our work is guaranteed to meet the minimum requirements under the Building Code of Australia.

We are specialists in the on-site application of intumescent coating systems. On-site application of thin film intumescents on structural steel has distinct advantages over off-site, as it eliminates transport and erection damages otherwise experienced.

In applying your thin film intumescent on-site, Remedial Building Services will treat the steel as necessary, prime it using a compatible primer, apply the intumescent base coat and then apply a finishing top coat as required to achieve the required finish. At all times Remedial Building Services will use only Nullifire compatible primers and top coats (complete tested systems) as this allows us to guarantee the complete system. Upon completion, we will provide you with certificates and maintenance schedules.

Case study 1

PROJeCt: Crown Casino (Melbourne)

LOCatION: New Escalator and Cafeteria expansion

CLIeNt: APM Group

aRCHIteCt: NHWebb Architecture

sCOPe:

This expansion required the erection of new structural steel which had to be fire rated to ensure safety and structural integrity during a fire.

APM Group recognised the need to preserve aesthetics and achieve deadlines and as such chose a thin film intumescent as the preferred fire rating option.

Remedial Building Services installed Nullifire S707 to achieve a 120 minute FRL. This solution was the optimal choice as it could be applied on-site, is low odour, has very low VOC’s and has limited, if any effect on the other trades and patrons of the Casino.

systeMs:

The system was installed using a two part system:

Primer - Nullfire 8300 WB @ 50 microns dry film thickness Basecoat - Nullifire S707-120 so as to provide a 120 minute FRL

BuILdING OVeRVIeW:
