Symmetry
If you divide the shell down the middle, the left side looks just like the right side. The tree is symmetrical along its vertical half.
If you divide the shell from left to right, then the top and the bottom do not look alike. The shell is asymmetrical or not symmetrical along its horizontal half.
Look at the shapes below and underline whether they are symmetrical or are not symmetrical. Draw their lines of symmetry on them:
Explain your answer: Explain your answer:
Vertical line Horizontal line
The butterfly is / is not symmetrical.
The cloud is / is not symmetrical.
A shape or object is said to be symmetrical when a line can
be place halving it into two equal parts that mirror one another. Demonstrate symmetry by folding a piece of paper in half, opening it, applying paint to one side, folding it again f lat and then by opening it, again. The paint on each half of the page should mirror the other, in a symmetrical way.
