Children meet very important ideas about number, such as counting, long before they start school. As adults it is easy to underestimate how complex these ideas are.

Playing with Numicon Shapes helps

young children learn about number

ideas and how numbers fit together.

Welcome to the Numicon  resource guide for 2010/11The coming year is an exciting one for all of those involved in the Numicon Project. With even more schools recognising the impact that the Numicon approach has on children’s mathematical development, and more teachers experiencing Numicon’s high quality professional development, it couldn’t be a better time to join with an internationally recognised leader in education like Oxford University Press. As part of Oxford Primary, the Numicon approach will reach further and support even more teachers and children. We are all looking forward to the next stage of the Numicon Project’s remarkable journey – we hope you are too.

Best wishes

Number rods are an alternative to the Numicon Shapes. many of the activities in Kits 1 and 2 can use either form of structured imagery.

Children new to the Numicon

approach need to develop their

own meaning for the Numicon

Shapes, which can be achieved

through free exploration and play.

Numicon for SEN and support teaching

It is well documented that pupils with SENs learn most effectively through multi-sensory teaching. The Numicon approach’s emphasis on doing and seeing, alongside speaking and listening, capitalises on pupils’ visual and kinaesthetic strengths. Practitioners working within the SEN field report a significant improvement in pupils’ confidence and achievement. The Closing the Gap with Numicon Kit contains activities and guidance on how to deal with specific SEN categories and addresses common problems pupils have in accessing mathematical ideas.

Numicon Shapes are available in grey and the Numicon Pegs are available in black and white for those children who have ASD and may find the bright colours a distraction.

Numicon professional developmentThere have been some amazing transformations in children’s confidence and achievement using the Numicon approach. However, we often use the phrase “there’s no magic in the plastic; it’s what you do with it that counts”. We see training and support as a really important part of what we do. In addition to the Teaching Guides, the following training and support options are available for you.

Full- and half-day courses

Our growing team of enthusiastic, accredited trainers deliver interactive training, giving direct experience of Numicon activities and insight into the underpinning theory. The training is delivered in full-, half-day or double twilight workshops to schools, Local Authority teams, mathematics consultants and charities.

What training achievesOur training gives teachers a chance to reflect on their pedagogy and supports them in processing new and challenging ideas. This gives participants the confidence to start teaching mathematics using a multi-sensory approach. We aim for participants to feel inspired, confident and leave the training session keen to start using the Numicon resources straight away, whether in the classroom, in support groups or one to one.

What training involvesThe workshops explore the underlying rationale and learning theory of a multi-sensory approach. They give trainees an overview of the Numicon teaching programme and will prompt them to consider the factors affecting children’s mathematical learning (including pupils with SEN) and consider how to get started with children who are new the approach. Most importantly, trainees will have plenty of hands-on practice using Numicon resources and activities. Workshops are kept small (up to 30 participants working in small groups) to maximise hands-on practice, discussion and reflection.

Prices and bookingPlease contact our Training Coordinator, via email ([email protected]) or phone (01865 353735), who will discuss your requirements and put you in touch with a suitable trainer to arrange dates and fees.

Training for Local AuthoritiesWe are keen to work with more Local Authority teams to support the effective use of the Numicon approach in their schools. We have a number of channels of support and options for training Local Authority teams so please contact us directly on [email protected] or 01865 353735 to discuss these options.

* The prices quoted are for UK schools and exclude travel and accommodation where required. Final costs will be agreed with your trainer prior to your workshop taking place.

About the intervention programme

Developed specifically to support Every Child Counts but applicable to any pupils aged over 6 years working up to NC level 2a, the intervention is designed to be conducted by a TA or teacher following specific training from an independent Numicon Trainer or from Numicon-Trained LA staff.

The programme uses the Numicon approach to maximise opportunities to blend action and imagery with pupils’ use of mathematical language and symbols. A typical intervention lasts 12 weeks and runs as follows:

Wks 1–3: Initial assessment followed by introductory activities.Wks 4–11:  Address areas of difficulty, as identified from the initial assessment, with Numicon activities. Wk 12:  Self-help strategies and assessment of progress.

About the training

Training is required to ensure the effective delivery of the intervention programme. The training is intended for experienced TAs with a supporting teacher.

What is the structure of the training? One full-day training session, two half-day sessions in three consecutive weeks, with two follow-up twilight sessions or web-based seminars.

What is covered? The training follows the pedagogical principles that underpin the Numicon approach and includes some direct teaching, observation of children working (via video clips), practical activities and discussion, all designed to prepare the trainees to deliver the intervention programme.

What does the training cost?£475 per trainee with a minimum of 10 (and a maximum of 15) per course. The fee includes: the live training listed above, a Training Manual, access to an online forum and the dedicated section of the Numicon website and a certificate of completion. Please note that the fee does not include the Closing the Gap Kit or Numicon Kit 1 as many schools already have these.

How do I book? For more information about intervention training please call us on 01865 353735 or email [email protected]. We will work with Local Authorities or school clusters to find a suitable venue and to fill each course.

Numicon kitsThis section contains details about all our kits, which form the core of our approach. If you are unsure which resources are best suited to your particular setting please refer to the previous section, ‘Who is the Numicon approach for?’

A key feature of this resource is the focus on maths conversation with ideas to encourage mathematical development throughout the pre-school setting, which will help give children a sound start to their maths understanding and boost practitioners’ subject knowledge. The Teaching Guide explains the key mathematical ideas and contains the innovative, playful activities, which are set out in the following groups: mathematics on the carpet, in water play, in messy play, in sand play, in outdoor play, in small world play, in tabletop play and at snack time.

About the Numicon activitiesThe most important elements of our core kits are the teaching guides. These contain teaching guidance and activities, with step-by-step illustrated support and ideas to help children make connections and use and apply their understanding. Here is an example of an activity group from Numicon Kit 1.

the children i am using the Numicon approach with are loving it and it quickly became apparent how much they were benefiting from using it.

Supplementary resourcesIn this section you will find details about the resources that support and enhance the Numicon kits and our teaching programme. Some of these resources are age specific such as ‘Numicon at the Seaside’ which is aimed at ages 3–5. Others like the ‘Numicon Software for IWB’ and ‘Working with Numicon Training Resource and DVD’ are intended for use across the whole school.

12   13

Interactive workspaces and resources can be used to create dynamic sessions to introduce key mathematical ideas to the whole class. Workspaces and resources include: Number Lines, objects for counting, coins, number generators, hoops to use in sorting, division and fractions and more. The pictures of various everyday objects can be used to help children use and apply their arithmetic.

New and improved features for version 2.0

• Fresh, easy to use design offering group selection• Integrated pen/eraser tool with colours and highlighting options• Larger screen resolution to allow more objects on the workspace• Improved tool palettes for rotating and grouping shapes and objects• Improved functionality with workspaces linked to resources• Scrolling Numicon Number Line up to 21• Extended range of resources with blank spinners and more fractions

We strongly recommend that the multi-sensory approach is maintained by giving each pupil a set of 1–10 Numicon Shapes that they can hold up in response to questions.

In response to requests from parents, a ‘Numicon at the Seaside’ number book and CD of songs is available for children to enjoy at home.

This resource is perfect to support the 1st steps with Numicon – At Home Kit. It contains an illustrated number book, a supporting CD of number songs and a guidance booklet, which draws attention to the mathematical ideas in the pictures, so that the child gets the most out of this unique resource. Each number from 1–10 is brought to life through a combination of picture and song, which encourages children’s understanding of mathematical ideas and the connections between numbers. The guidance notes will help children get to grips with the all important mathematical language that they meet in school.

The Numicon Homework Activities are designed to enable children to practice at home what they are learning in school. The playful activities and games develop skills in the following areas: counting, addition and subtraction facts, place value and recognition of the inverse relation between addition and subtraction. They enable parents to get involved without actually ‘teaching’ their children.

The activities are simple for schools to administer and come with comprehensive guidance for teachers. They are supplied on a CD for teachers to print so children can take them home. Each game and activity comes with clear and easy to follow instructions for parents.

Schools will also need to purchase ‘Maths Bags’*. These contain the resources needed to complete the games and activities.

Numicon Homework Activities Intervention Resource

Ten open-ended investigations with a low threshold and high ceiling, aimed at KS2/P4–7 and extendable to KS3/P7+ levels, for pupils aged 8–11.

All the activities start with the use of Numicon Shapes and Cuisenaire Rods to allow the majority of pupils to be involved at a basic level. Gifted and talented children can develop their skills by taking the investigations to higher levels. By using the Numicon Shapes and Cuisenaire Rods the investigations are dynamic, helping children to recognise that numbers form a highly organised system full of many patterns.

All the investigations can be taken to higher levels of KS2/P4–7, and some can be extended into KS3/P7+. The investigations give children opportunities to use and apply their number understanding and to extend their mathematical thinking. There are opportunities for conjecture, trial and improvement, logical thinking about numbers and careful mathematical deduction. Children will also see the advantage of setting out their work systematically to reveal emerging patterns and demonstrate their thinking.

If schools already have Numicon resources available then these can be used to work with your investigations. If this is not the case we recommend the following materials are purchased with the book:

Investigations with Numicon

This resource provides detailed guidance for leading staff training sessions, via a 2-hour DVD and extensive printed support.

Designed as a standalone resource for schools wishing to train their own staff, the pack also gives invaluable ongoing support for schools that have already received our live training. It is also ideal where a member of staff, having had accredited training, needs to disseminate knowledge to colleagues.

The DVD shows teachers using Numicon within their usual daily lessons. They each explain various ways of using Numicon and how it supports their teaching. It illustrates how the teaching programme can significantly raise children’s confidence, understanding and achievement. Whilst it is not intended to be a substitute for live training, the DVD informs teachers about Numicon and gives them confidence to start using Numicon themselves.

‘Working with Numicon’ is organised into 4 sections with accompanying guidance on Key Points for Discussion and Practical Activities.

The first section, ‘Why Numicon?’ covers the theory, recommended for all those using the Numicon approach. The following sections cover the early years, Key Stage 1/P2–3 and whole class teaching in Year 6/P7. In the final section the teachers have their say.

Teaching accessoriesAll Numicon components are available separately, making it easy to replace lost pieces. We strongly recommend that you have the most recent versions of our teaching guides so you can benefit from the improvements we have made. Some of the accessories don’t come with the kits. The Pan Balance is useful for showing equivalence by using the weight of the Numicon Shapes, and the Number Rods are a useful alternative to Numicon Shapes for many of the activities in Numicon Kit 1 and Numicon Kit 2. We consider these as ‘must have’ accessories and thoroughly recommend schools purchase both items.

Number Lines

The Numicon Number Lines are integral to many of the activities and help to raise the profile of numbers in the classroom, giving pupils and teachers a mathematical context for learning and teaching about number relationships, counting and arithmetic.

Picture and pattern making

Picture and pattern making with Numicon Shapes familiarises children with the Numicon Shapes and colours. During play children see and use the number relationships represented by Numicon Patterns. Making patterns and sequences helps children develop all-important sequencing and prediction skills. Children enjoy building patterns with number rods in the plastic rod trays.

Number rods and accessories

Number rods offer pupils another form of structured imagery to help enrich their number understanding. We suggest that number rods are used alongside Numicon Shapes throughout the teaching programme. Number rods feature in Kit 1 and Kit 2. For ages 3–5 they can be used in picture and pattern making, ordering and practical arithmetic activities. The colours of Numicon Shapes and number rods are deliberately different because it is not helpful for children to associate a number with any one colour. The rods are not graduated so they can be seen to represent different numbers in different situations. The possible values of number rods are seen when they are placed in relation to each other.

About the Numicon Project

The Numicon Project is a collaborative endeavour to facilitate children’s understanding and enjoyment of maths.

The Project was founded in the daily experience of intelligent children having real difficulty with maths, the frequent underestimation of the complexity of the ideas that we ask young children to face and a recognition of the importance of maths to them and to society as a whole.

We appreciate the complexity of these early number ideas and seek to foster the self-belief necessary to achieve in the face of difficulty; we are not about ‘making maths easy’.

We believe that the combination of action, imagery and conversation helps children to structure their experiences, which is such a vital skill for both their mathematical and their overall development.

By watching and listening to what children do and say, we and many others are finding that our developing multi-sensory approach provides learners with the opportunity to play to their strengths, thereby releasing their potential to enjoy, understand and achieve in maths. This enjoyment in achievement is also shared by teachers and parents.

We strive to support teachers’ subject knowledge and pedagogy with teaching materials, training and ongoing feedback as we continue to develop a better understanding of how we can work together to encourage all learners in the vital early stages of their own mathematical journey.
