BACKGROUNDAccording to Celce-Murcia (2001: 187) Reading is assumed to be the central means for learning new information and gaining access to alternative explanations and interpretations.

According to Richard ( 1979:238) reading comprehension is perceiving a written text in order to understand its contents.

The writer chose ERRQ in this research because ERRQ is the best strategy to guide the students in comprehending the texts, the writer want to make the students be active in learning reading subject.

PROBLEM OF THE RESEARCH

The problem of this study will concern with the effectiveness of using ERRQ in teaching reading comprehension to the tenth grade students of the Islamic Senior High School 3 of Palembang.

Limitation of the Problems

In this study the writer will apply ERRQ in teaching reading comprehension to the tenth grade students of the Islamic Senior High School 3 of Palembang. The text which will be taught is narrative texts.

Formulation of the Problem

The problem of the reaseach is formulated in a question: Is it

effective to teach reading comprehension to the tenth grade

students of the Islamic Senior High School 3 of Palembang by

using ERRQ?”

Objective of the ResearchThe objective of this study is to find out whether or not the

strategy of ERRQ is effective in teaching reading

comprehension to the tenth grade students of the Islamic

Senior High School 3 of Palembang.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESEARCH

a. For the teachersb. For the writer herselfc. For the researchers

Hypotheses of the ResearchHo : it is no effective to teach reading comprehension

School 3 of Palembang by Using ERRQ.

RESEARCH PROCEDUREResearch Variables1. The independent variable2. The dependent variable

Operational DefinitionIt is necessary to define some key words operationally to

avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation. The key terms

are:

1. Teaching

2. Reading comprehension

3. ERRQ

POPULATION AND SAMPLE

1. Population

The writer will take the tenth grade students of the Islamic

Senior High School 3 Palembang as population, in the

academic year of 2011-2012. There are about six classes, and

each class has about 35 students. So, it is about 210 students as

the number of population.

2. Sample

The sample will choose by using cluster random sampling.

In taking the sample, the writer will take the following steps:

a. Writing the names of the six classes in six small of paper,

b. rolling them,

c. putting them in glass,

d. taking two classes by randomly

METHODE OF RESEARCH

Techniques for Collecting Datathe writer will use true experimental design especially

pretest-posttest control group design. The design can be

diagrammed as follows (Sugiono, 2011: 159):

Treatment Group R O1 X O2

Control Group R O3 O4

TESTThere are two kinds of test which will be used by the

writer.

They are:

a.The first one is pre-test

b. The second one is post-test

The writer will use the written test in the form of multiple

choice and true false questions. The test consist of 30

multiple choice items and 10 true false items. The students

will be given 40 minutes to do the test.

VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY

Validity of the Test

Richards,Platt and Weber (1985:61) state that validity is the

degree to which a test measures what it is supposed to

measure, or can be used successfully for the purposes for

which it is intended.

Page 11: NURHAYATI

RELIABILITY

Reliability Richards, Platt, and Weber (1985:243) reliability is

a measure of the degree to which a test gives consistent

results.

In this research the internal consistency of reliability will be

estimated through the Kuder-Richardson Reliaability

Coefficient as follows:

KR21 =

Page 12: NURHAYATI

WHERE:

KR21 = Kuder-Richardson Reliability Coefficient

K = Number of the items in the test

M = Mean of the set of the Raw Scores

SD = Standard Deviation

Page 13: NURHAYATI

TECHNIQUE FOR ANALYZING THE DATA

To analyze the data, the writer will use the t-test because it

is intended to find out whether there is significance

difference between the two groups, the experimental and

control group. The formula is as follows ( Sugiyono,2011:

197):
