Change

Spring 2013 – Subsession 2

Part 4: Course Policies

Attend Class

Students are expected to attend all online and face-to-face class

sessions as listed on the course calendar. Attendance at face-to-face class meetings and participation in online activities is essential for the success of the hybrid experience.

First day attendance (for in-class) or first week online communication (for online learning) is required. Instructors may drop a student who

does not attend the first day (in-class) or communicate online (online learning) the first week and approve the registration of another student seeking to enroll in the class. The instructor will notify the

Registrar's Office which students should be dropped for first day/week nonattendance.

Click here to read more about St. Catherine University’s policy on attendance.

Participate

The most significant learning activity is the attendance and active

participation in all class sessions. Being accountable for the knowledge presented during class and contributing to the discussion is an important aspect of professional nursing practice. NOTE: class

participation is a significant percentage of the course grade; therefore, attendance will be taken at all face-to-face class sessions, and

individual contributions to online activities will be evaluated. Points for participation are awarded throughout the course.

In the event of an absence students are responsible for obtaining any

handouts distributed and for information and announcements made in class.

Communicate

If you find that you have any trouble keeping up with assignments or

other aspects of the course, make sure you let your instructor know as

NURS 4120 Spring 2013

early as possible. As you will find, building rapport and effective relationships are key to becoming an effective professional. Make sure

that you are proactive in informing your instructors when difficulties arise during the semester so that they can help you find a solution.

Keep informed of course activities. Check the D2L News on the Course Home page daily for announcements and for information related to the course. Also, check your St. Kate’s email every day for

individual instructor messages.

Complete Assignments

All assignments for this course will be submitted electronically through D2L unless otherwise instructed. Assignments must be submitted by

the given deadline or special permission must be requested from your instructor before the due date. Extensions will not be given beyond the

next assignment except under extreme circumstances.

The work you submit is the work that is graded; therefore, your instructor assumes that the work you submit is representative of the

grade you would like to receive.

Late Work Policy

Be sure to pay close attention to deadlines. All assignments must be completed by the assignment due date and time. Late work will not be

accepted without instructor approval.

Late assignments that are not approved by the instructor will receive

an automatic deduction of 10% of the total points per day. Class assignments cannot be made up.

Should a question arise regarding late assignments, it will be at the course coordinator's discretion regarding the 10% points off for each day of lateness.

Viewing Grades in D2L

Points you receive for graded activities will be posted to the D2L Grade

Book. Click on the Grades icon on the navigation bar to view your points.

Your instructor will update the online grades each time a grading

session has been complete—typically 4 days following the completion of an activity.

Understand When You May Drop This Course

It is the student’s responsibility to understand when they need to

consider disenrolling from a course. Refer to the St. Catherine

St. Catherine University, Department of Nursing

RN-BS Degree Completion Section Page 11

University Academic Calendar for dates and deadlines for registration. After this period, a serious and compelling reason is required to drop

from the course. Serious and compelling reasons includes: (1) documented and significant change in work hours, leaving student

unable to attend class, or (2) documented and severe physical/mental illness/injury to the student or student’s family.

Incomplete Policy

Under emergency/special circumstances and at the discretion of the instructor, students may petition for an incomplete grade. An

incomplete will only be assigned if you are making satisfactory progress in the course AND you have completed 75% of the course at the time the petition is filed. All incomplete course assignments must

be completed within 8 weeks after the last day of classes in the session or sub-session in which the course is offered. Click here to

read the full policy.

Inform Your Instructor of Any Accommodations Needed

If you have a documented disability and verification from the Disabilities Coordinator in the O’Neill Center for Academic Development and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please

contact your instructor as soon as possible. It is the student’s responsibility to provide documentation of disability to the Disabilities

Coordinator or meet with an Access Consultant from either the O’Neill Center in St. Paul or The Learning Center in Minneapolis to request needed accommodations; ideally before classes start.

On the St. Paul campus, Access Consultants may be contacted at

651.690.6563. In Minneapolis, Access Consultants for The Learning Center may be contacted at 651.690.8160. Click here for more

information about available services.

Commit to Integrity

As a student in this course (and at this university) you are expected to maintain high degrees of professionalism, commitment to active learning and participation in this class and also integrity in your

behavior in and out of the classroom.

Commit to Inclusivity:1

Nurses are called to promote human dignity. In order to be aware of the ever changing environment in nursing and health care, an open

dialogue must be able to occur in a non-threatening environment in which students and faculty can engage in discussions that are taking

place, challenge comments that are made, and evaluate aspects of the structural environment that support injustice. Bringing attention to expressions of cultural bias is a way to model against stereotyping. At

any time, a moment of consideration can be called. This can and should be called by anyone, student or faculty, in order to facilitate

needed conversation around sensitive issues. These moments are times for all of us to learn how to become more sensitive in our language and actions. Such dialogues may pertain to stereotypes

related to “race,” sex, religion, gender identity, sexual preference, weight, economic status, and anything that can impact the dignity of

persons, including equitable treatment of patients and students. These moments of consideration should be freely addressed in the classroom

and are an essential aspect of learning in this course.

1 This statement is based on a statement written by NURS 6790 student, Maria Kludt (Spring 2009).
