SAUDI COMMISSION FOR HEALTH

SPECIALTIES (SCHS)

INTRODUCTION

The Saudi Council for Health Specialties

(SCHS) is a scientific body having a corporate

entity. It was established by a Royal decree No.

M/2 on 6.2.1413H. (1993G.) with

headquarters sited in Riyadh and Other

branches in several Region around the country.

INTRODUCTION

SCFHS aims at development of professional performance and development and encouragement of skills and enrichment of scientific intellect and proper practical application in the field of various health specialties.

The SCFHS develop and monitor post graduate training programs, accredit training facilities, conduct examinations, classify and maintain a register of all licensed practitioners across the KSA. SCFHS also accredit CME courses and track the CME record for all practitioners in order to re-register.

OBJECTIVES 1. Design, accredit and supervise training programs.

2. Establish scientific boards to implement training programs.

3. Assess and accredit health establishments (hospitals) for training purposes and specialization.

4. Supervise examinations in various specialties and approve their results.

5. Issuance of professional certificates, diplomas, fellowships and memberships.

6. Coordinate with other councils, societies, and health colleges inside the Kingdom and abroad.

7. Evaluate and equalize health practice certificates.

OBJECTIVES 8. Promote research, publication of scientific papers

within its field.

9. Participate in the proposal of general health plans aiming at development of health manpower.

10. Hold symposia and conferences.

11. Participate in establishing guidelines and standards for health practice including medical profession ethics.

12. Encourage and promote scientific health research.

13. Approve the establishment of scientific and professional societies on health specialties

NURSING SCIENTIFIC BOARD AT(SCFHS)

Tasks:

Designing and Supervising Training Programs.

Preparing Specialties Examination and approving their Results.

Evaluating hospitals and health centers for the purpose of

training and recognizing these hospitals and health centers

partly or totally for training.

Taking part in evaluating and equalizing the professional

certificates.

Formulating regulations and criteria for professional practice.

Advising SCFHS on: Credentials, Planning, Codes, Establishment

of Scientific professional societies, Licensing.

NURSING SCIENTIFIC BOARD COMMITTEES

The scientific board has the following permanent

committees to assist the board/committee in executing its

tasks:

Central Training Committee is responsible for the implementation of

the training programs all over the Kingdom.

Examination Committee is responsible for preparing and organizing

various exams including the finals (written and clinical).

Training & Accreditation Committee is responsible for supervising and

recognizing training centers and keeping vigilance that centers once

recognized will maintain appropriate requirement.

Regional Supervisory Committee is responsible for implementation of

the training programs at regional level and distribution of trainees in

various approved rotations in designated centers.

SPECIALIZATION

The National Association of Clinical Nurse

Specialists and the American Nurses

Association agree in defining specialization

as a delimited or concentrated area of expert

clinical practice with focused knowledge and

competencies. The specialty area may be

broadly or narrowly defined; the area may be

well established or emerging.

WHY WE NEED SPECIALIZATION?

Political, economical and social changes which are continuously occurring in today's society have a decisive influence on health.

Of particular importance are those changes related to the aging of the population, morbidity and the prevalence of chronic diseases which create significant health problems which in turn present significant challenges to curative type medicine.

Scientific and technological advances permit a higher degree of sophistication for treatments, increasing life expectancy while at the same time posing questions which must be answered.

CERTIFICATION

Certification is a process by which a nongovernmental

agency validates, based upon predetermined standards,

an individual nurse’s qualifications for practice in a

defined functional or clinical area of nursing.

Most certification programs are created, sponsored or

affiliated with professional associations and

organizations interested in raising standards.

Certifications are earned through an assessment

process and, in general, must be renewed periodically.

Certification credentials are nationally recognized and

portable, meaning the credential is accepted from one

hospital to another. (AACN)

SPECIALIZATION AT SCFHS

Specialization program is designed to provide

an opportunity for professional nurses to

develop a specialized practice, to upgrade

knowledge and clinical competence in the

area of specialty nursing based on

international standards.

SPECIALIZATION AT SCFHS

It also focuses on creating learning

opportunities and exemplar case studies that

contribute to quality practice environments.

It is constructed in a form that enables the

learner to understand and apply the necessary

knowledge, skill and attitude about

contemporary nursing issues, theory and

research to home health nursing practice.

SPECIALIST

As specialists are clinical experts in the delivery

of evidence-based nursing interventions,

possess advanced knowledge of the science of

nursing along with a specialty focus, and apply

that knowledge to nursing assessments,

diagnoses, and interventions and to the design

of innovations for clients with similar special

needs.

AIM OF THE PROGRAM

The program of study aims at facilitating the learner’s personal and professional growth in the area of specialty by enhancing critical thinking, communication, technical , teaching and assessment skills necessary for making rapid, sound nursing judgments and demonstration of self-direction in providing nursing care.

Furthermore, this program will synthesize evidence-based data and theoretical knowledge to deliver immediate, competent, culturally sensitive care, as well as develop expertise in utilizing human and material resources to support clinical reasoning.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an

accredited nursing program or equivalent.

Preferably have a minimum of two years current post-graduate

clinical experience in nursing (including the internship).

Provide a minimum of three professional letters of reference.

Pass a written exam and oral interview.

Have a current license to practice.

Have basic computer knowledge and skills.

Be in good physical health (provide a recent physical exam

report).

Demonstrate competency in writing and comprehension of

English.

Commitment to study on a full time basis.
