Witnessing

asked

to

give a

two

hour lecture on the subject of

Church Growth in Cultures . This

dealt

mainly with the study

of

a

culture

and

the

inost

effective means

of comrfiunieating th e

Gospel to

a

p ers o n i n t h a t

c u l t u r e .

The

hardest

part

was

putting

information

down

on

paper

that

has been gathered and used over the years.

Many

interesting

t h i n g s

were d is cu ss ed d urin g

th e

e n t i r e conference an d

we

a l l

came

away

knowing t wa s

good

t o b e t h e r e . Th e f o l k

from S o u t h

Africa were a great

inspiration

to a l l and

we

thank

the Lord

fo r t h ei r presence. Originally the missionary families from

Zambia were planning

th e

program

for

this

year

but

the

remaining

closure

of

the border on the Zambian side prevented

their

coming.

churches. The response continues to amaze us and we

look

forward

to the

next

three weeks as i t makes i t s way

to

the Gokwe area

U.S.A.

Our

youngest

daughter Lynda, age

seven

and a

ha l f ,

had

been

diagnosed

,as severely mentally retarded. I t was

suggested

that she be

brough t to th e U.S.A.

due

to th e

l ack

o f f a c i l i t i e s

fo r he r

case

in

Rhodesia .

I

f i na l l y

agreed

t h a t

if

the

repor t s

were

s tudied

and

Doctors f e l t she could be helped, and, f e l t it was necessary

to br ing her

immediately

I had sa id , I would. The answers were

two

weeks

arrangements , and

a r r ived in Chicago on

the 10th

o f October. This

was

made poss ib le

because Heleh

stayed

in Rhodesia with Karolyn and Tommy to at tend

to

speak to one of

our

support ing

churches

Lansing, Michigan.

seconds.

In

would

miss

two or

three words

in

every

sentence

spoken. This condi t ion

Since our family wil l

be coming on furlough

in

September of

1974, Lord

wil l ing, i t

was recommended

that

Lynda return to Rhodesia

with

me. A

special education program

is

being

worked out

by the

Rehabili tation Center

in Kansas City, and the special education

department of Kansas State Teachers College in Hays, Kansas.

have

made

the

past

year a

rather

difficult

one.

I t

has been

just

over 4 years since our last furlough, so this

brief

, but exception

al ly busy time has been

a

great

blessing

to

me.

We

had

no

idea that

so

many

parents, Mr. and

Mrs. Marvin Forkner, have been very

helpful

making contacts and arrangements; and, along with many

of you, have helped

recently

took a job as Public Relations Man for the Homer B. Reed Adjustment

and Training

Center

in Hays,

Kansas.

He was able

to

make

several

vita l appointments with key men at the College. My mother and dad

were

helpful

in the added responsibilities of

are overwhelmed by

tremendous response to

the needs.

The response to the ministry of the Good News Center is

wonderful

and

though there are

st i l l

needs to be met before June of

1974

a

lot

of pressure has been relieved through

that

which has been given

and

the..conmittments that have been

made.;

The greatest blessing

however,,

has been the flail real izat ion that, we are

never

alone.

a marvelous

wife

and mother, and i t was hard to leave

her.,,bphind:,in Rhodesia with Karolyn

and

Tommy

though I

know

the

Lord

is being,, ajllowed to lead, in a ll things. She has been

faith fu l in

writing .to Lynda and me keeping us informed of

the hews

there. She

mentioned that.

Tommy

had cut open a golf

ball

which sprayed, a

solution

in his eyes.which caused some excitement and concern. She

also

told

a gallon. (Imperial gallon)

Lynda

and I

will arrive in

Rhodesia the day

before

Thanksffivinc

and

how

wonderful i t will.be. I m sure this will be the greatest

thanksgiving ever. By the time you get this

will all be preparing for a busy Christmas season. We do wish you the
