    Welcome

    Dear Student

Thank you or your interest in Reading College and or reading our

guide or ull-time courses and Apprenticeships.

Never beore has there been so much choice o courses post 16.

At the college there is a programme which will suit all interests or

levels. What will help you to decide?

Think about what you would like to do ater this course ostudy. You might be interested in moving into product design

engineering in the uture and would be choosing at this point to

study a Science and Maths A level programme, or a BTEC Level 3

Engineering programme, or joining an engineering company on an

    Advanced Apprenticeship.

You might want to go into the caring proessions but not yet have

achieved both English and Maths. You would do your Maths or

English alongside a Level 2 Health and Social Care programme,

progress then onto Level 3 and then into a job, an Apprenticeship

or onto higher education to do a Childcare degree at the college.

Our ocus is to help students succeed in their programmes

at the college, but also to be well prepared or whatever they

choose to do next. All courses include employability skills

because we want students who come to Reading College to

have an edge in the employment market; to develop the attitudes, behaviours and resilience to succeed in the workplace, and eel

    good about themselves.

We set high expectations and standards at the college, but

in a riendly environment. Students will achieve more i they

are stretched, but also i they eel condent and happy.

I look orward to welcoming you to whatever course you

    choose to study.

    A levels (AS/A2)

A level courses last two years. In the rst year, you will study three

or our subjects at AS level. When you gain an appropriate pass

in these exams you can go on to the second year where you

typically take three subjects at A2 to make up the ull A level.

These qualications are the traditional route to university and

are assessed externally through exams and, or some subjects,

also coursework. You will have regularly marked classwork and

homework. AS levels are stand-alone qualications, valued at

    hal an A level.

    Access to Higher Education

Completion o an Access course can provide returners to

education with a stepping stone to university or to HE study in

specialist colleges. The courses cover a range o subjects and,

as they are one-year programmes, the content will not be as

comprehensive as that o A levels or other two-year Level 3

courses. You dont need any ormal qualications to do an Access

course, but beore you are oered a place you will be required

to complete numeracy and literacy assessments to ensure that

you are able to work at the required level.

    Vocationally Related Qualifcations (VRQs)

Extended Diplomas, Diplomas and Cer ticates are work-ocused

qualications in a wide range o subjects linked with specic

areas o work. The college oers three levels and entry grades

vary according to the level. At Level 3 the Extended Diploma is

the equivalent o 3 A levels and, depending on the standard o

work, is graded either as a Pass, Merit or Distinction (D). A student

completing the Extended Diploma could have a grade prole o D,

    D, D which is the equivalent o 3 A levels at grade A and earns 360

UCAS points. Universities give conditional places based on either a

grade prole or points system. Our analysis o successul students

shows that students who have already studied VRQs at school and/

or have GCSE grade proles o mainly C thrive on the VRQ route

and achieve grades that enable them to progress to university.

Level 2 and 1 Diplomas are each one-year programmes that

prepare students or the next level. Entry requirements or these

courses are typically GCSEs at grade D or the Level 2 and or Level 1

GCSE grades below D or no qualications.

Find your perectway to learnWe oer a range o dierent course types, aimed at a wide range o learners. Some choose a vocationalroute and others preer a more general or academic route. To help you think about what type o course

would suit you, please read on.

    NVQs (National Vocational Qualifcations)

NVQs are competence-based qualications. This means that

they certiy that you have reached the standard o reliable

skills that are required to operate proessionally in the industry.

To gain an NVQ you may need to practise thoroughly the basics

o practical skills in a variety o situations and also be assessed on

the job in a real work situation. We oer both Apprenticeships and

college-based courses leading to NVQs. Many students progress

rom our ull-time courses to jobs where they can gain NVQs

    part-time alongside work.

BTEC Level 3 or Level 4 Foundation Diplomain Art and Design

BTEC Foundation is strongly recommended or students wishing to

pursue a Higher Education course in the visual arts. It is an intensive

and highly creative course studied over one year (normally ater

A levels) that is specically designed to help students specialise in

an art discipline such as Fine Art, Fashion and Textiles, Photography

and Graphic Communication. The level o the Diploma you receive

depends on how well you do in the optional units; the grading is

dependent on your Final Major Project unit.

    Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a great way to earn, get a qualication and gain

on-the-job skills. They combine training at the college with gaining

practical skills rom employment. Each Apprenticeship consists o

a ramework o qualications that includes practical competence

(NVQs), necessary technical knowledge (VRQs), and Functional

Skills. These are specied by the industrys own skills body.

    Foundation learning options

Courses are available in a wide range o subjects or people who

want to gain a nationally recognised qualication, but are not

yet ready or learning at Level 2. They help build skills, enhance

employability, increase knowledge and boost condence. They are

also useul to explore a subject that interests you. Our oundation

options include the vocational pathways as well as courses or

those who want to ocus on Maths and English skills. We also have

Horizons programmes i you have learning diculties.

    Functional Skills

Functional Skills are those practical skills in English, Maths and

ICT that you need in everyday work and lie situations. They are

requently the key to gaining a job or entry to a course at the next

level up. Our ull-time vocational courses have these skills built in,

so you naturally gain condence in using them in real lie situations.
