Grand Masters Message to the Craft

To all Brethren of the Grand Lodge of

the State of New York,November 11th, Veterans Day, is a very

    special day for all Americans!

Some of us still remember when the11th hour of the 11th day of the 11thmonth was called Armistice Day to

    commemorate the dough boys who

served in World War I. Today, we

remember all who have served our

nation in time of war and peace.

Regretfully, far too many of our

precious young men and women are still

    making great personal sacrifices as

members of the military because we are

a nation still at war. I ask you once

again as Masons and as uprightAmericans to proudly fly the flag of our

nation and to say thanks to all of those

who serve and have served our country

    in the past.

Just a few weeks later this month,

on November 28th, we will celebrate

    Thanksgiving with our families and

    loved ones. This year Thanksgiving

coincides with the first Day of

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival ofLights, another joyous family holiday

    and a time for remembering.

As Masons, all of these holidays are a

time for reflection and prayer, for we

should be ever mindful of how very

thankful we are for all of the blessing

the Great Architect of the Universe

has given us. We are indeed blessedthat we can gather together in ourhomes in an atmosphere of peace and

tranquility where we can all share the

love and warmth of family. On behalf of Gail and myself and ourfamily, Susan and R:.W:. Bill Thomas,

and the entire elected and appointed

Grand Line ... to you and to those you

love ... may we all enjoy the coming

holidays to the very fullest. And let us

again give thanks that we live "in the

land of the free and the home of thebrave"that has truly been blessed by

our Divine Creator. With warm fraternal regards and bestwishes,James E. SullivanGrand Master

Spreading George WashingtonLight across the pond!

    During April 2013 there was

an opportunity to attend aspecial event in London, UK,

    for two members of St.

    Johns Lodge, No. 1, Ancient

    York Masons. It was the

    occasion of the Silver

Wedding Anniversarycelebration (25 years) of the

    Right Honorable Damian

Green, MP and his beautifullady Alicia Collinson who is

    a barrister at HarcourtChambers, Temple

    London. This was to take

    place on the historic Houses

    of Parliament River Thames

    Terrace, on an evening

    following a regular session of

    the House of Commons, a

    regular working day for the

Minister of State for Policeand Criminal Justice before

    he and wife celebrated with

    family and friends.

    Parliamentary Members are

    sometimes bestowed

    honorific titles, Right

    Honorable being given to an

    MP receiving Ministerial

    rank and given the privilege

    of being addressed as Right

    Honorable for the distinction

of their service, and/or rankof office achieved, which isperhaps the basis from which

    our Masonic Titles have

    evolved over the past 200

    years, the Most Honorable

    being a Marquis member of

    the House of Lords.

    Following the nowmandatory security checks

that we are all use to aroundthe world, we were allowed

    into the Magnificent Palace

of Westminster, the site of a

    Royal Palace first in 1016,

    but is now where the

Government of the UKmeets and conducts

    Parliamentary business. It

was like being in a living

museum walking past thegorgeous tapestries and

    paintings on the walls, some

    dating back hundreds of

    years. Piers Vaughan is

shown in front of such a

    painting.

During the event JasonSheridan braved the cold

British weather to be on the

historic terrace, which hashad Politicians and their

    guests strolling up and down

    over the Centuries, but the

    difference now is the London

    Eye tourist attraction in the

    near distance.

    The Right Honorable

Damian Green MP waspresented a special miniature

    replica of the George

Washington Inaugural Bible, from his Oxford University

    friend the Master of St.

John's Lodge No. 1, State of

    New York, Very Worshipful

    Piers A. Vaughan, to

    promote the historic link the

craft has with theInauguration of Presidentand Brother George

    Washington in the homeland

of George Washingtonsancestors. He kindly signed

a second copy for the Lodge

    archives to be placed

amongst others signed byHRH Prince of Wales 1918,

    President Eisenhower,

    President Carter, President

    George H.W. Bush.

I was able to meet a lifetimepolitical icon of mine during

    the event, as the Right

    Honorable VirginiaBottomley, the Baroness of

Nettlestone had stopped byto wish the happy couple

    well. Ms. Bottomley had

    emerged under Margaret

    Thatchers government, and

later became a Minister of a

    number of government

departments in the UK beinghonored with her years of

hard work in British Politicswith a seat in the House of

Lords. I was able to chat

with her about the inspirationshe provided to me and many

    people my age growing up,

and that had been one of the

    motivators of my success in

my career in New York and

    the happiness I have found,

    especially with my Masonic

    activities. She even allowed

me to have a photographwith her and Piers Vaughan

who clearly looks surprisedthat a peer of the House of

Lords agreed to pose for a

    photo with me.

Never to miss an opportunity, Piers Vaughan also beingGrand King of Royal Arch Masons visited Holborn

Borough Council Royal Arch Masons Chapter No. 3272,

meeting at the United Grand Lodge of England

Freemasons Hall. Some of the members had travelled

200 miles to participate in the meetings and would return

home that evening via rail, showing the length of

cabletows in the UK being very long indeed! It was very

beneficial for 2 New York Masons to see the conferral of

this Degree, even if the British accents were hard for us to

    understand at times.

!"#$%&$' )$ *+,Change The WorldWe often say that we want to leave theworld a better place for our children and

grandchildren. That is why so many of

us give to charitable causes, invest our

time and effort in our communities and

work so hard our entire lives to leave

something for the next generation. I

have a three-year-old son and I hopethat when he reaches my age the world

will be a much healthier place. I dream

that someday, if he needs a replacement

organ, one can be made available, if he

needs a special medication one can befound. I also foresee that one day we

    can better delineate through genetic

analysis the factor that predispose to

disease so that his doctors can intervene

to prevent the disease for taking hold.

Together we can change the face ofmedicine. By investing your charitable

    dollars in research conducted the

    Cardiac Research Institute at Masonic

Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL)you can take part in leaving the world a

better place. Your support of our lifesaving medical research not only

benefits your own health but will

benefit the lives and well-being of every

    generation to follow.

Scientists in our Organ and TissueBioengineering Program at the MMRL

are working on research aimed at

    generating replacement

organs. Imagine being able to go toyour doctor, give a blood sample or skin

sample, and come back 6-8 weeks later

to have an organ that is a genetic match

    ready for transplantation into your

body. We are several years away from

achieving this goal, but it success

hinges on the support of individualssuch as you.

The Stem Cell Center and its Director,

    Michael X. Jesudoss, Ph.D. are

currently using skin samples to createheart cells. These cells will be used

for safety pharmacology to assess the

safety of new drugs, for regenerative

therapy to restore function to injured

and failing hearts as well as to create

human models of disease, which could

then be used to develop patient specifictreatments. Molecular geneticist at the

    MMRL are examining the genetic

    predisposition to disease by sequencing

the DNA of individuals with heartdisease. Charles Antzelevitch, Ph.D.,

Executive Director and Director ofResearch at the MMRL, believes that

this type of genetic research will

ultimately guide us to the root cause of

disease, thus enabling scientists at our

    institute and elsewhere to develop

innovative treatments and cures. TheMMRL is one of the top genetic

screening centers in the world devoted

to understanding the cause of irregular

heartbeats. Doctors from all over theworld send blood samples to us so that

we can help them diagnose and treat

    their patients.

As look back at our achievements of

2013 and chart our course for 2014 and

beyond, it is clear that we have much tolook forward to in the way of medical

    advances. However, reductions in

Federal support are wreaking havoc on

    the biomedical research community and

it is up to private and corporate donorsto help carry the torch of medical

discovery. If you are already directing

    your charitable dollars towards the

MMRL, we thank you from the bottom

of our hearts. If you are considering it,

please contact us so that we can show

you what your support canaccomplish. We are proud that 84 cents

of every dollar goes directly into the

research and that our institute has

earned a four star rating, the highestavailable, form Charity

Navigator. Exciting discoveries are onthe horizon and with your help, I am

confident that we can bring them within

reach. I look forward to a healthier

future for my son as a result of the

research conducted at the MMRL and

hope that you can help us achieve abetter tomorrow for your loved ones and

    for all of humanity.

    By Thomas A. Barbour,

Chairman NY Masonic Organ & Tissue Donor Awareness Program

Currently, only 22 percent of New Yorkers over the age of 18 are registered organ donors, compared to thenational 45 percent average. Only two states, New Hampshire and Texas, have lower percentages.

Laurens Law was created to increase the amount of registered organ donors in the state.

New Yorks Organ Donor Network reports over 10,000 New Yorkers are currently waiting for a life-savingorgan. On average, someone dies every 16 hours waiting for an organ.

Lauren Shields, the laws namesake from Rockland County, almost died at the age of nine waiting for a hearttransplant. Now, 13, she has become a public figure working for organ donation in the state.

The NY Masonic Organ & Tissue Donor Awareness Program is also working toward improving the State'sdonor participation by speaking to Masonic and other groups to explain the need for donors and to answerrelated questions.

A law started October 3 that makes answering the organ-donor questionon New York license forms mandatory, aiming to create more organdonors.

Anyone who applies for a state drivers license or learners permit willnow have to answer the question whether they wish to be added to theDonate Life Registry. Alternatively, applicants may choose a skip thisquestion, option.

    Because I am a Freemason

I believe thatfreedom of religion is an inalienable human right and toleranceanindispensable trait of human character; therefore, I will stand in my Lodge with Brothers of all faiths, and respect their beliefs as they respect mine, and I will demonstrate the spirit of Brotherhood in allaspects of my life.

I know that education and the rational use of the mind are the keys to facing the problemsof humanity; therefore, I will bring my questions and my ideas to my Lodge, and strive to advancethe growth of my mind alongside my Brothers.

I know that the rich tradition of Freemasonryand its framework of Ritualareimportant platforms for growth and learning; therefore, I vow to stand upon these platforms to

improve myself as a human being, and I vow to help in the mission of the Craft to provide tools, atmosphere, challenges and motivation to help each Brother do the same.

I know that charityis the distinguishing human virtue, and thatpersonal communityserviceis the best demonstration of ones commitment to humanity; I acknowledge that wordswithout deeds are meaningless, and I vow to work with my Lodge to provide service to thecommunity, and to promote charity, friendship, morality, harmony, integrity, fidelity and love.

I know that my obligation to community extends beyond my local sphere and is partly fulfilledin mypatriotism: love of my country, obedience to its laws and celebration of the freedoms andopportunities it symbolizes.

I know that leadership is best demonstrated by commitment to serving others;I will therefore participate in, and help work at improving individual leadership skills, and servethe Brothers of my Lodge to the best of my ability.

I know thatfriendship, fidelity and familyare the foundations of a well-lived life;I therefore vow to be a faithful friend to my Brothers, as I expect my Lodge to respect my personalobligations, and to treat my family as though my family were their own.

I know that the last great lesson of Freemasonry -- the value of personal integrity andthe sanctity of ones word-- is a lesson for all people in all times; I therefore vow to be a manof my word.

I know thatMasonrys power is best exercised when its Light is sharedwiththe world at large; I therefore vow to bring the best of myself to my Lodge, in order that my growthmight be fostered and nurtured, and to present myself to the world as a working Freemason, onthe path to building a more perfect temple.

Because I am a Freemason, these values and aspirations are guideposts for my progress through life.

and leadership in the troop, who give service to their homes, churches, schools and communities, andwho are good outdoors-men. Besides the requirement of earning various merit badges, which signify

fields of study, the Eagle Scout must perform an Eagle service project that requires planning, development and leadership and is helpful to his school, religious institution or community. The scout

must then appear before a Board of Review to be evaluated. Because the Eagle Scout Award isNationally recognized, the scouts application must be submitted and approved by the National

Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It is a fine moment in any young mans life, and the lives of allthose near him, when he receives this cherished badge the recognition of his achievements.

    The

    General Douglas A. MacArthur*YOUTH AWARD

    for

    Exemplary service to the

Youth of the State of New York

This very distinguished award is presented to those who have given of themselves, that ultimate goal in life,

serving our youth. The following facts may be used as a guide when presenting this award.

General MacArthur was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on January 26, 1880.

Was greatly influenced by his father Gen. Arthur MacArthur, also a famous general, who joined the Union

Army at age 17 and fought in the Civil War. Won the Congressional Medal of Honor at Missionary Ridge in the battle

of Chattanooga. Douglas MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1942. This marked the only time the son of a

Medal of Honor winner also won the medal.

Graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1903 as the top cadet in his class. After graduating he spent the first year of his career mapping the Philippines.

In 1917, then Colonel MacArthur became Chief of Staff of the famous 42nd Rainbow Division. By 1918 he

rose to the rank of Brigadier General. Here he won fame as a front-line General in France in the battles of Meuse-

Argonne and Saint Mihiel. He was wounded three times, decorated 13 times, and cited for bravery in action seven

    times.

MacArthur was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy in 1919. Was accredited with raising the

academic standards and broadening the academys curriculum.

In 1930, he became a Four Star General, named the Army Chief of Staff, the youngest in U.S. history.

From 1935 to 1941, MacArthur was the military advisor to the Philippines government. He was named Grand

    Field Marshall of the Philippines.

In March of 1942, President Roosevelt ordered MacArthur to Australia to become Allied Commander in the

Southwest Pacific. This was done reluctantly of which he spoke many times. Thus he made that famous promise, I

    shall return.

Became a Five Star General in 1944, and took command of the American army forces in the Pacific in 1945, and

was his duty to receive the surrender of Japan aboard the battleship Missouri, September 1, 1945.

After the war, he became administrator to the military government in Japan. He introduced reforms which were

designed to turn Japan into a democracy.

When the war started in Korea by the North Koreans invasion in 1950, MacArthur in addition to his occupation

duties, became UN Commander in Korea. In 1951, he retired to private life.

General MacArthur died on April 5, 1964 at the age of 84 years.
