Want to Have Fun

“Good Fun, Good Food, Good Music” is on tap for Ladies Night Out. And, no doubt, some great conversation, too.

The evening gets under way April 18, 6:00 p.m. in the Lafayette Room/Main Bar.

“Our sole purpose is just to have a great time and enjoy each other’s company,” said Susan Hume of the Club’s Entertainment Committee. This is the third LNO get together.

Members, said Susan, are urged to “bring a friend, bring two.” A member charge/cash bar will be available and there will be a variety of hors d’oeurves to munch on throughout the evening. The popular Mike Proffitt Duo supplies the music.

Cost for everyone is $15++ if registered in advance online or through calling 423-4500 and $20++ at the door. Non-members will be able to pay by cash or credit card.

Chef Marty is exploring all Virginia has to offer for our second Virginia Dine Around Night. The April 12th evening will feature local fare from the farms, fields, rivers and streams of the state. It will all be accompanied by the finest beers and wines the state has to offer.

Did you know that Virginia has been listed as one of the five up-and-coming wine regions (along with areas of Chile, Italy, Spain and New Zealand)? We currently have 192 wineries and counting, only California, New York, Oregon and Washington have more wineries than Virginia.

We still have room for teams if you’d like to get in on the action. Make sure you pick up your registration form from around the Club and get it filled out.

We will have a Seeding Party in the Grille on Thursday, April 4th and the tournament begins on Saturday, the 6th. Friends and family are invited to come out and cheer on their favorite team.

A cookout is planned from 4-6 p.m. on the tennis lawn with a member charge bar. The championship game is set for 6 p.m.

Spring has officially arrived. It is nice to put the cold and gray days of winter behind us. Outside activities around the Club are starting to

come alive.

Jim and the staff are preparing for the summer season.

The tennis program is off and running. I would like to welcome Jon Antle as our new Junior Instructor. John played for Old Dominion University during his collegiate career and is a very talented player. He will bring new enthusiasm to our already strong junior program.

The courts are scheduled for the yearly resurface in late March and early April. The courts will be in top condition for the upcoming season. Both the Adult and the Junior Kickoff events are this month. Mark them on your calendar and plan to attend. And finally, the Virginia Cup is the last Saturday of the month. Brush the dust off the rackets; drop them in the shop for restringing and tune up for the 2013 season.

Early in the month another sports event will be hosted on the tennis courts. The hard courts will transform into a basketball

The warmer days and later sunsets are a wel-come reminder of the good times ahead as we enter April. With the resurfacing of the tennis courts we begin our season with ladies league play and our junior and adult kick off socials.

Our yachting season begins with the spring banquet on April 11th to which all members are welcome, the spring racing series gets under way on April 26.

The Club’s first annual 3 on 3 hoops tourna-ment is Saturday, April 6th. This display of basketball skills and prowess should be good for a lot of laughs. A seeding party will be held in the Grille on Thursday the 4th. We will also open the Grille for the Finals of the

NCAA tournament on April 8th. A limited menu will be available.

A Virginia themed Dine Around is scheduled for April 12th in the Main Dining Room with the Ken McNeil trio engaged in the Lafayette Room. Michael Proffitt will perform on the 18th when the Club offers a Ladies Night Out also in the Lafayette Room.

As we move into April the Club’s staff will prepare the outdoor pool facilities so you may begin to enjoy them as the weather warms up.I hope to see you at the Club soon.

area. The first NYCC 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will be held. Come out and watch all ages of membership compete for the Club title.

The boating community has been waiting for winter to end. Boats are being cleaned and readied for the spring racing season. The Spring Yachting Dinner is on April 11th. This is an annual event that lays out the upcoming sailing and boating season.

We are excited about the junior sailing program. This years’ summer junior sailing program is going to be the best in the history of the NYCC. We have never assembled a more talented and experienced staff to run the program and teach our kids to sail. We welcome Andrea Luna to the program. Read more about Andrea on page 5. We look for a full and active sailing program.

Marty and his staff continue to provide special culinary evenings throughout the month. On April 12th, he has scheduled a Virginia Dine Around. Marty and the staff are going to prepare and serve some of the foods that make Virginia special to all of us. For a highlight of what he plans to prepare, read more on the cover page.

Jim and the staff are getting the grounds in shape. The rip rap project is proceeding nicely and should be finished soon. The rear grounds

of the Main Clubhouse are being landscaped after the rip rap project is complete, so come out, sit on the terrace and enjoy the view. It is a great place to have a drink, read a book and watch all the activity in the marina and on the river.

The Board continues to reach out to the membership for potential new members for the Club. We are continually looking for new members and families to complement our strong membership. Bring friends and neighbors that are not currently members to one of our monthly events and let them experience the special oasis that we have in the middle of Norfolk.

See you around the Club.

Respectfully Submitted,Billy Dashiell

around the ClubLet the Hoopla Begin: Fear the Lobster

The Larchmont Lobsters, that is. The Lobsters have been tabbed one of the favorites in the 49-and-over division of NYCC’s first 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

There will also be an Open Division (Under 49) in the competition which takes place Saturday, April 6 at the Tennis Center, where the courts will be converted into a basketball venue.

The “very veteran” Lobster quartet – teams are allowed one substitute – consists of Rick Kiefner (66), Jim Forrester (64), Bruce Holbrook (63) and “youngster” Bill Ungerman (56). Opponents will quickly discover these guys know every trick in the book.

“We’ve been playing forever,” said Holbrook, an accountant, who claims he still holds the William & Mary intramural record for most fouls committed. “It’s just such a great game you never want to stop.”

True hoop junkies, they all still play several times a week at various places, the Y, Norfolk Collegiate and Norfolk Christian.

“Thank goodness, you can have a sub,” said Ungerman who played high school ball at Granby and is now CFO of a food distribution company. His goal is to “pound the boards, pass and not hurt myself.”

Kiefner, a fiery backcourter, and the rangy Holbrook said “not to worry.” They will take care of the shooting. Apparently, defense will be left to Forrester, the club’s former commodore.

Forrester played at Gordon College (Mass.), where he was team captain, all conference and the league MVP, but cautions “none of those honors will apply to my play in the tournament. The last time I played with guys my age, our clothing smelled like mothballs. I’m not sure this competition should be open to public viewing.”

Despite that disclaimer, Kiefner says he has been swamped with requests to leave tickets at the “Will Call” window. Asked if the “old School” Lobsters will be wearing signature Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers, Kiefner said, “We are still waiting for a shoe contract from Nike or Adidas

“This is such a great thing for the club to do. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I hope we can get a lot of teams out there and start a tradition.”

It’s not too late to sign up. Contact Brian Friedman at [email protected] or 580-3021 for more info. Players, family and friends can enjoy a member charge bar and cookout from 4-6 p.m. Championship games go off at 6 p.m.

Valentine’s Day at NYCC

We had a full house for Valentine’s Day this year and wanted to thank all those who came out to celebrate the day of love with their friends, families and sweethearts!

nYCC newSKeeping the ODU Family Tradition Going

Brian Bashara always knew where he wanted go to college and play baseball.

At Old Dominion where granddad Charlie played for the legendary Bud Metheny.

“It’s been like a dream come true,” said Brian, a junior infielder for the Monarchs.

Brian was a recruited walk-on at ODU after winning all Eastern District and all-Eastern Region honors while at Maury. He also did some pitching. He quickly won over everyone with his ability, both on and off the field.

A business management major, Brain is the team’s CAA representative and is the baseball team’s representative on the ODU student athletic committee.

This season, he has come off the bench to contribute to the Monarchs’ early season success with his defense and base running.

“Just getting on the field has been a thrill,” said Brian.

After experiencing some down years, the once-perennial powerhouse is taking steps to get back to where they were.

“It’s been exciting to be a part of that. There is great tradition here,” said Brian.

He has discovered that being a Division I athlete is not all glamour. His typical day begins with a full slate of morning classes, some starting at 8. Then there is a quick lunch and then it’s off to the training room to treat an injury for conditioning. And then there’s practice or a game. After dinner, it’s study time till lights out.

“It’s a full day,” said Brian. “You have to learn how to manage your time.”

While Mom and Dad (Denise and Brian) live down the street from ODU, Brian lives with three buddies off campus. He has two brothers, Lawrence, a student at George Mason, and Vincent, 10. Sister, Cristina, is a star athlete at Maury.

“We keep things pretty neat,” he said with a laugh. “But sometimes we have to have ‘cleaning days’ to catch up.”

Brian said the best thing about going to ODU has been what he’s learned both in the classroom and on the field.

“I’m getting a great degree,” he said. “And I’ve learned so much from baseball that will help me later. Baseball teaches you a lot about handling adversity and persevering.”

No doubt, Granddad Charlie would be proud of his grandson.

DinnerThe Yachting Committee launches the upcoming season with its Spring Dinner, Apr 11. Whether you’re a boat owner or not, everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy a great meal, hear some sea stories and learn what’s in store in the coming months.

Cocktail hour starts at 6 p.m. and dinner is at 7. Call 423-4500 or register online. Please specify entrée choice at time of reservation.

You can pick up a registration form for your young sailor at the Club.

The first of our three sessions begins June 24 and runs till July 5. Succeeding sessions are July 8-19 and July 22-Aug. 2. Morning, afternoon and all day sessions are offered. During the last session, campers will have the option of dividing their time between sailing and tennis camp.

It will be a fun-filled summer with beginners introduced to basic sailing skills and water safety, such as learning the parts of a boat and how to rig and de-rig boats. This class is designed for children (ages 8 to 10) who have never been in a boat.

Intermediate and Advanced sailors (12 and up, usually) will fine tune their skills and learn strategy. Our most advanced youngsters will be introduced to sloop sailing.

Lots of fun activities are planned, including Wednesday night regattas where sailors can

Summer Sailing Camp is Not That Far Away put their learning to the test, followed by a cookout. Campers will take a field trip aboard The American Rover, July 30.

In addition, program director Rachel Austin said the Club is hoping to put together an Opti Travel Team to compete with other clubs.

If you would like a registration form directly emailed to you, please contact Betsy Glover at [email protected].

It Was Always Sailing Season for AndreaThe beauty of growing up in Venezuela is you can sail year round.

“It’s always summer, so you can be out on the water every day,” said Andrea Luna, who is joining our college staff of instructors at Junior Sailing Camp this summer. “It was easy to fall in love with sailing.”

Andrea, a native of Caracas, is a member of the Venezuelan national team. Wanting to continue her sailing in college, Andrea – her full name is Andrea Sofia Luna Ruiz – enrolled at Old Dominion.

“I was looking for a place that had a strong sailing program and strong academics and ODU was a perfect fit.”

A sophomore, she is majoring in international business with a minor in marketing.

She sails two-person FJs and 420s nationally for the Monarchs in the spring and pilots single-handed lasers in the fall.

Of coming north, Andrea said “it has been a great experience for me. I miss family a lot, but I have made many friends here. I couldn’t have asked it to have turned out better.”

Andrea brings several summers of teaching sailing to youngsters back home to her new position.

“I can relate to youngsters trying to learn the skills,” she said. “ I remember what it was like.”

With all of our college instructors from the Old Dominion sailing team, Andrea should feel right at home here, too.

“Yachts” More NewsWhen we have power outages due to storms or hurricanes, our Dock Master (Dino) will send out notification as a courtesy. While some boats may have issues with bilge pumps or heaters as a result of a power outage, the Club cannot assume liability for such events.

We also will be posting no wake zones along the waterfront and other signage that should create awareness and help boater safety.

Dino will be getting a new assistant, Sean Robinson. Please welcome him.

The Yachting Committee Wants

You

The committee is looking for power boaters, sailors for racing, crew for racing and anyone who would like to be associated with waterfront activities. You don’t have to have a boat to get involved. Contact Commodore Carl Bryant or anyone on the committee to start getting involved.

“It’s balancing the physical and mental aspects of sailing that make it so challenging and fun,” he said. “You have to do a lot of thinking while sailing.”

He is the son of Neil, a periodontist, and Aline, who works in the office of Alumni Affairs at EVMS. Sister Caroline is a three-sport athlete (all land sports!) at the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut.

Graham attended Norfolk Academy until the 9th grade and then The Hotchkiss School in Connecticut before moving on to Yale.

Being part of one of college’s top sailing program involves a year-round commitment. It has paid off as Graham was named a Collegiate All-American skipper as a freshman, a rare accomplishment.

“There really is no off season,” said Graham, who packs a lot of strength in his 5-foot-2, 125-pound frame. “You’re on the water till mid-November and then working out and conditioning and then I’ve been known to go to class on occasion.”

Later this year, Graham will train with the U.S. team for several months prior to the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup at Team Oracle’s training facility. The four-day competition will take place against teams representing a host of nations. You can learn more about the team and show your support for Graham by visiting www.UA45Racing.com.

A history major, Graham doesn’t know quite what he is going to do upon graduation. He might try his hand at sailing professionally and the 2020 Olympics “is always a possibility. We’ll have to see.”

Asked what advice he might hand down to youngsters in this year’s Summer Camp, he said, “The most important thing is to have fun and not worry so much about mastering things right away. Just enjoy yourself.”

It worked out pretty well for one young sailor.

The Fun Cup is just that. Lots of fun with Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles matches for skill levels 3.0 to 4.5. Princess Anne CC is hosting the event, Sunday, Apr. 21. Any members are welcome to sign up. Register at the Tennis Center.

Our top male players are gearing up to reclaim the Virginia Cup. The tournament will be held at NYCC Saturday, Apr. 27. We just missed bringing home the trophy from Richmond last year.

Graham Sails On

NYCC’s ace sailor Graham Landy is competing in his most prestigious event yet.

In September, Graham will be part of a six-man crew representing the U.S. in the 1st annual Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, a younger version of America’s Cup, the sport’s best known event. He’ll be aboard an AC45 catamaran, which is one, big fast Cat.

“I’m very excited and honored to be a part of this,” said Graham.

He was selected for the team after his standout performance at a training competition.

For the Yale University sophomore, it’s one more achievement in a growing list.

Graham has swept what’s known as the “Triple Crown” of youth sailing, winning the Orange Bowl Regatta, Buzzard’s Bay Regatta and U.S. Sailing’s Youth Championship.

No one would have guessed he’d be one of the nation’s top young sailors when he started sailing at age 8 in the Club’s Summer Camp program.

“I got into it to be with friends,” said Graham, with a laugh. “I wasn’t very good at first. I never got the sailor of the week or those awards that it seemed the Stokes boys were always winning.”

At 12, when he realized that he was getting better at sailing than hitting curveballs, he decided his athletic future was on the water.

This swim team specific clinic focuses on the strengths and skills needed for young swimmers to be at their best for the 2013 Sea Dragon season.

The emphasis is on youngsters ages 5 to 7, but not limited to those ages. Swimmers will learn breathing and stroke techniques, as well as touches, starts and kicks. A “mock swim meet” will take place at the end of the 4-week clinic to give swimmers a real feel of a Sea Dragon meet.

Two sessions will be held on Sundays, April 7, 14, 21 and 28. Session I meets from 2-2:45 p.m. and Session II, 3-3:45 p.m. Space is limited, so sign up today.

Our Advanced TRX Clinic will put even the best conditioned fitness buffs to the test. Are you ready to take the next step beyond the traditional TRX workout?

The Advanced Clinic’s high intensity exercises are designed to improve balance, strength and core stability. Participants will utilize steeper angles, narrow foot positions and single-sided variations of traditional TRX moves.

Clinic date is Saturday, Apr. 14 at 1 p.m. in the Group Fitness Room.

Sea Dragon Stroke Clinic

Going Coast-to-Coast

Ashlee Guerrero, our new Sea Dragon swimming coach, learned to swim on the west coast.

The California native, currently a coach of the ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Club), swam for her high school team and at Long Beach City College, where her best events were the 50-back stroke and the 500 freestyle.

Kick It Up A Notch

She became a “right coaster” when her husband, Anthony Perez, a fire control officer in the Navy, was transferred. They recently bought a house in Chesapeake, which they share with their dog, Violet.

Prior to coming “east” and coaching at ODAC, Ashlee, 23, taught swimming in California.

“The most important thing for beginners is to just have fun and learn the fundamentals. That means there’s a lot of fun and games,” said Ashlee of her teaching philosophy.

As swimmers develop, she said, the emphasis is more on technique and strategy.’

Ashlee will assume her duties in May when the pool opens. But will be meeting with parents and team members on May 19th.

“I am really excited to be here,’ she said. “It’s going to be a fun summer.”

Don’t get caught unprepared for April showers. All rain gear and umbrellas are 10 percent off this month at the Retail Store in the Fitness Center.

Take Cover

You don’t have to head for an island retreat to get away from winter. You can escape – at least for an hour -- by indulging in one of the great massages we’re offering.

Each massage is only $65. A hot stone massage, practiced in ancient medicine, is known for its healing and relaxing properties.

The carefully placed heated stones are believed to rejuvenate and soothe mind and body. Our herbal massage utilizes chamomile and lemongrass , essential oils, to promote relaxation.

So, pamper yourself or purchase a gift certificate for someone special.

Here’s just a partial list of the many benefits of massage: increases circulation, improves skin condition, reduces muscle spasms and cramps, increases joint flexibility, increases range of motion and releases painkilling endorphins.

Well, it wont be long. The 139th Kentucky Derby is Saturday, May 4. Catch all the action -- “the most exciting two minutes in sports” -- on big screen TV in The Grille while sipping a mint julep (that’s a sprig of mint, bourbon, sugar and water) or the beverage of your choice and munching some great snacks.

Wagering a few bob with a friend is cool, as long as we don’t know about it. Break out your finest “at the track” hat as there will be a prize for the best Men’s and Women’s hat. A free drink for anyone who knows the words “To My Old Kentucky Home.” The drinking starts at 5:30 and the race goes off about an hour later. See you there.
