Welcome to our programme of events for the summer of 2010. I hope that you are enjoying the revised style of our season brochure and that you have had an opportunity to explore our new website. Do log on regularly to www.nyos.co.uk for all the latest videos and pictures as well as news of all our forthcoming projects.

Our very busy Easter period saw no fewer than five projects taking place in the space of just twenty-one days: quite an undertaking! As well as excellent performances by Camerata Scotland, The National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland and The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland, I was particularly

delighted with the success of both the String Training and Spring Academy courses and I very much hope to be welcoming these students into NCOS and NYOS respectively in the very near future.

The next few months are packed with exciting musical events. NCOS kicks things off with their summer concert in Perth, performing music by Rachmaninoff, Kodály and Gershwin under the direction of Peter Stark. We are very much looking forward to welcoming some seventy young musicians to our Jazz Summer School, after which NYJOS will be visiting Manchester and Bristol, as well as giving performances closer to home in Stirling and Glasgow. Trumpeter Chris Batchelor whose 2009 album Big Air was described as “The best British jazz record in 20 years”, will be our inspirational guest soloist.

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland will embark on one of its most ambitious and exciting projects ever when they meet to tackle works by Webern, Berg and Mahler. As a part of our ongoing association with The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and The Ulster Youth Orchestra, NYOS will be performing for the first time in Limerick, Dublin and Belfast and I am delighted to welcome back the internationally-renowned soprano Jane Irwin as our outstanding soloist. As conductor for the summer we welcome back one of the world’s foremost exponents of the music of the second Viennese school, Diego Masson. A disciple of Pierre Boulez, Diego will bring a vast wealth of experience to our performances.

NYOS Strings will be on the road again when they travel to Wick, Golspie and Tain under the auspices of North Highland Connections before returning to Glasgow, all under the direction of Alexander Janiczek, former leader of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. NYJOS Collective will end a busy summer when they tour with the renowned saxophonist, Julian Arguelles, in demand throughout Europe as a performer, mentor and recording artist.

NEWS FROM NYOSNYOS’ NEW WEBSITE

On 25 March 2010, NYOS launched its brand new website. One of the exciting new features of the site is the inclusion of short films profiling each of our ensembles. We currently have pieces featuring NYOS Futures, NYJOS Access, Camerata Scotland, NCOS and NYJOS and we will add more as the year progresses, so please keep checking back. The new site will also allow you to access reviews and official photographs of all our performances and you can now donate to NYOS online by clicking the DONATE NOW button.

30TH ANNIVERSARY APPEAL

We’re delighted that the 30th Anniversary Fundraising Appeal launched last November has reached the grand total of £7,945 - that’s £9,333.80 with Gift Aid. Many thanks to everyone who gave to the Appeal - your generosity will help NYOS to secure Scotland’s musical future for generations to come.

NYOS TRAINING COURSES

This spring also saw 87 young musicians take part in NYOS training courses. NCOS’ String Training Course took place at Kilgraston School from 29 March to 1 April and included a special outing to see Camerata Scotland perform in St Andrews. NYOS Spring Academy was held at Strathallan School from 13 to 16 April and culminated in an afternoon concert for family and friends. The students played under the baton of NYOS’ Chief Executive, Julian Clayton and were joined by flautist Lis Dooner of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland is the flagship orchestra of NYOS. Founded in 1979, it is a symphony orchestra for musicians aged between 12 and 21 in Scotland.

The orchestra performs throughout the year in a variety of high profile venues in Scotland, the UK and around the world, and its young musicians benefit from the invaluable performing experience this provides.

The musicians in The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland are of the highest calibre and many past students have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the musical profession. Past members include Dame Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie and Garry Walker.

NYOS will welcome back old friends for their summer programme 2010 with Diego Masson returning to conduct Mahler’s Fifth Symphony and Webern’s Six Pieces for Orchestra.

We also welcome the return of the wonderful Jane Irwin who will be singing the Three Fragments from Wozzeck by Berg.

The National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland (NCOS), is NYOS’ symphony orchestra for young musicians aged 8 to14.

NCOS provides an important means of early musical education and performing experience for the young musicians of Scotland, fortunately assured through support from Standard Life. NCOS’ public concerts are always critically acclaimed and the committed and energetic performances given by its young members never fail to amaze and inspire audiences.

Auditions for NCOS are held annually in November. Many of the young musicians involved in NCOS go on to become members of The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.

Camerata Scotland is the showcase, pre-professional chamber ensemble of The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland. NYOS Futures is the contemporary chamber ensemble of NYOS. It is drawn from senior NYOS and Camerata Scotland musicians and aims to introduce young musicians and new audiences to the fascinating world of late 20th and early 21st century classical music.

The ensemble is delighted to have worked with a variety of internationally renowned conductors, soloists and orchestras. Through NYOS Futures, NYOS hopes to encourage an interest in the musicians and music of today and develop and engage future audiences for contemporary classical music.

This October, NYOS Futures will take part in an exciting project as part of the Aberdeen Sound Festival, performing Steve Reich’s Eight Lines as part of an evening of minimalist music.

In the first half of the evening, Terry Riley’s iconic minimalist classic In C will be performed by a scratch group of musicians comprising students, school children, local amateur musicians and professional performers resident at the Sound Festival. The piece will be directed by Pete Stollery, Head of the Music Department and Professor in Electroacoustic Music and Composition at the University of Aberdeen, who will work with the musicians prior to the public performance at 7pm.

In the second part of the evening, NYOS Futures will be led, once again, by conductor William Conway in a performance of Steve Reich’s Eight Lines.

Steve Reich was involved in the premiere of In C and his music is heavily influenced by Terry Riley, a fellow minimalist.

The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland and North Highland Connections present Scotland’s most talented and experienced young string musicians in a tour of the Highlands, culminating in a performance in Glasgow.

The ensemble will visit Wick, Golspie and Tain and will explore challenging repertoire from three of Russia’s most famous composers.

Formed to meet the growing demand for high quality training for young jazz musicians in Scotland, The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland (NYJOS) made its debut in 1996 and has since become known as one of Scotland’s foremost youth jazz ensembles.

NYJOS Collective comprises the most experienced players from The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland. Essentially a jazz chamber ensemble, NYJOS Collective is a smaller and more flexible arm of the jazz orchestra. Throughout the year the ensemble gives concerts during residencies at a variety of venues around Scotland.

Directed by Malcolm Edmonstone and Andrew Bain, the ensemble offers the more experienced members of The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland the opportunity to publicly perform their own arrangements, play a wide variety of compositions and lead jazz workshops with members of the community and other jazz ensembles.

NYOS’ newest initiative is the introduction of a new jazz training orchestra entitled NYJOS Access. This project provides a platform for between 20 and 25 promising young jazz musicians.

Students who take part in NYJOS Access will benefit from attending a training school which will be complemented by opportunities for performance in a relaxed and informal environment.

NYJOS Access will be a training ground for the next generation of top jazz musicians.

Following their successful launch in March 2009 with a performance at Paisley Grammer School, NYJOS Access performed together in Edinburgh at The National Museum of Scotland in November last year as part of a celebration of St Andrew’s Day as the museum’s Homecoming Scotland 2009 programme came to an end.

Access contributed to the fantastic atmosphere in the museum and their impressive playing had audiences of all ages swinging and clapping with the music!

The ensemble will come together again this July as part of the NYJOS Summer School and will perform publicly in November.
