The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) is unique in providing high profile performing experiences in classical and jazz music for students aged between 8 and 28, through no fewer than eight ensembles, ranging in age, size and musical style.

In addition to organising training, intensive rehearsals and national and international concert tours for its orchestras, The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland is committed to introducing Scotland’s young people to musical experiences through workshops in primary and secondary schools.

We believe in the future of Scotland’s next generation of musicians, our students are proud and excited to be playing with Scotland’s National Youth Orchestras and we are passionate about supporting and developing their talent.

Scotland’s finest young jazz musicians are joined by the dream pairing of reedsman Iain Dixon and guitarist Mike Walker. Retaining elements of the 2008 album Madhouse and the Whole Thing There, the programme will also include the BBC Radio 3 commission Ropes and Walker’s most recent album The Impossible Gentlemen. Dixon’s considerable talent both as a writer and player will be showcased through original music and new arrangements. All music has been prepared especially for this project bringing the young jazz musicians of Scotland into a professional environment with these international artists.

Expect to be transported from the rooftops of Rio to hard hitting contemporary New York jazz via Steely Dan whilst remaining firmly rooted in the jazz tradition.

Maurice Ravel Rapsodie EspagnoleGustav Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden GesellenJames MacMillan Symphony No 3 (Silence)

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland performs Ravel’s passionate, Spanish inspired Rapsodie Espagnole and James MacMillan’s 3rd Symphony Silence, the composer’s complex, contemporary exploration of the relationship between silence and music. NYOS also accompanies the ever-popular mezzo-soprano Jane Irwin, in a performance of Mahler’s bittersweet song cycle about lost love Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer).

NYOS is delighted to announce that this tour includes the orchestra’s debut performance at the prestigious Three Choirs Festival in Worcester.
