Kim Milne, the new country director of Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT), shares some insights into the challenges that lye ahead and her goals for the future.
Give us an idea of your career background. What has led you to this new role?I was always good at numbers so once I finished school I decided I would become an accountant - it didn’t take me long to realise this was not the path for me. Once I started working I was fascinated with workplace behaviour, culture and people, and I very quickly gravitated to HR and leadership. I have held leadership roles in both the recruitment and insurance industries and have really enjoyed developing potential leaders and staff within the organisation. The opportunity to work for a large global organisation like CWT was exciting and the role combined all my passions.
What are your main goals in the role?My focus will be on continuing to grow the business in 2012 as well as continuing to develop our client relationships. I am also passionate about developing my staff and creating a cohesive culture in the workplace.
What sort of challenges do you foresee for the future?Obviously the downturn in the market is something we have to prepare for but we are always focused on creating customer value; we have a strong committed team and we are continually improving in quality and efficiency.
How do you see CWT evolving in the marketplace?We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of integrating travel technology and 2012 will see further advancements in this area. Smartphones and tablets are becoming the norm for most business travellers and at CWT we are focused on providing and recommending the right
technology for our clients. We will continue to create sustainable competitive strength and service.
What has been your greatest achievement so far, both career and personal?Workwise, my biggest achievement so far would have to be leading my previous team to win the overall award in the 2009 NZ Best Places to Work Culture and Climate Survey. The effects of engagement on employee productivity, retention, and recruitment certainly make a difference to the bottom line. Personally, it would have to be having three beautiful children, watching them all grow into loving, happy, unique individuals.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?When I’m not spending time with my family and socialising with friends, you’ll find me curled up on the couch reading or participating in a Les Mills combat class.
What are you reading?I have a couple of books on the go at the moment, “5 Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni and re-reading “The Bronze Horseman” Paullina Simons.
What advice would you give to someone who aspires to be in your position?You need to enjoy what you do, have a passion for seeing your staff develop and always do what you say you are going to do!
What are your guiding principles?Admit when you have made a mistake and learn from them, be honest, be appreciative and always do what you say you are going to do.

Sarawak Convention Bureau offers
delegates the chance to play a real-life
version of iPhone game Angry Birds as
a breakout activity. The group is divided
into teams where they are be required to
build a catapult from scratch using the
items provided. No tools or hardware, just
simple ingenuity and lots of teamwork.
Each team is given three chances to
hit the target, failing which; an elected
team member is required to use his or
herself as a human catapult. An alley is
created from a plastic sheet with water
and soap, and the human catapult has
to slide his or her body to reach the set
target. The first team to hit the target
wins! For a full day session, this game
can be combined with other beach
activities such as football or volleyball
to encourage camaraderie and teamwork
between colleagues.
DUBAI’S LOOKING GOODDubai Department of Tourism and
Commerce Marketing (DTCM) report
that visitor numbers from New Zealand
are up four per cent on 2010. “2011
has shown by far our highest growth
and could not be achieved without the
value support and commitment shown to
Dubai as a destination by our key trade
and airline partners, in addition to the
unprecedented support from our industry
partners based in Dubai,” said DTCM
director Julie King.
FULL STEAM AHEAD China has been expanding its high-speed
rail network, drastically cutting down
travel times between Shanghai and
neighbouring MICE hot spots such as
Suzhou and Hangzhou. For example,
Hangzhou is now 47 minutes away by
train – a journey that previously took two
and a half hours by car in light traffic.
It is predicted an increase in demand
for two-city itineraries now that it’s
possible to do a day trip to Hangzhou. In
June 2011, the high-speed train service
between Shanghai to Beijing was put
into service. The journey between the two
cities takes just five hours.
SUNSHINE pROpERTY UpDATENovotel Twin Waters on the Sunshine
Coast now has a new MICE venue.
Lily’s on the Lagoon, the property’s
signature restaurant was renovated in
July 2011 to allow for simultaneous use
for conferences and events as well as

divided into two separate spaces with an
overall capacity of up to 250pax banquet

Work is well under way at the Rutherford Hotel Nelson A Heritage Hotel’s new conference centre. The conference centre development, which began in November last year, is due to open in late 2012.
The conference centre will house 700 people theatre style or 500 for a banquet and represents one of the largest conference centres to be built in recent times in the South Island.
The Nelson conference development is being built on the western side of the existing hotel on Nile Street and will comprise a 585 square metre conference space.
Adjoining the new conference space will be an outdoor garden for delegates to bask in Nelson’s famous pleasant climate on refreshment breaks or over a relaxed BBQ meal.
The new conference venue can be divided in to two large conference rooms. The Maitai two room will be
332 square metres and house 400 people theatre style and the Maitai one room will be 253 square metres and suitable for 300.
Tipped to be popular with event organisers will be the 280 square metres of pre-function area offering ample room for trade exhibitions and motor vehicle access is planned.
The conference centre will incorporate the existing conference facilities of the Waimea (capacity 150 theatre style), Wairau (80 theatre style) and Heaphy (capacity 50 theatre style) rooms for breakout space. Combined, the Waimea and Wairau rooms provide an ancillary conference venue for up to
300 people theatre style.The hotel’s large-scale facilities offer
huge potential for Nelson according to Rutherford Hotel Nelson A Heritage Hotel’s general manager, Bevan McGillicuddy.
“The new increased capacity offers a great opportunity to host larger events in the region which will bring many delegates and their partners to Nelson providing a big boost to the local economy,” says McGillicuddy.

From the villages of France to the vineyards of Australia there is a walking or cycling itinerary to suit everyone.
For clients who have been to Europe several times and are looking for a more immersive experience, this style of holiday is a popular option according to a leading specialist.
“It is all about discovering the region, local experiences and mixing it up,” said A Walkers World/Cycling Europe director Jill Grant. “We are also finding clients are more focused on variety and like to do a cruise, stay in a villa and include a cycling trip.”
Grant said Kiwis were starting to cotton on to the value and experiential offering of walking and cycling trips.
“A few years ago Kiwis were not aware of how to travel in Europe – it was all about big coach tours with lots of stops. Now people are starting to realise they can stay in nice hotels and small villages and experience the region by bike or on foot. Their luggage is moved for them each day so it is no hassle.”
Despite having a few itineraries in South America, Europe remains the big seller for Grant with barge and bike itineraries increasing in popularity.
“It is nice and easy, you only have to unpack once and it is reasonably priced.”
She urged trade to put the option of a walking and cycling trip to clients because they would keep coming back for more.
The Innovative Travel Co. has also reported increased interest from travellers keen to take a relaxed cycle and sail holiday.
The popular options include Croatia, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Vietnam and self guided options in Provence and the Loire Valley in France and through Bavaria.

World Journeys are reporting a growing demand from agents who have clients wanting to cruise the last continent in comfort.
“For those very well-travelled clients, Antarctica is often top of the list of where to go next, and more often than not, they want to really experience it properly, as a once-in-a-lifetime trip,” said World Journeys director Angele Pirie.
“The wildlife and marine life have been totally wild and untouched for millennium, so it’s not uncommon to walk onto the ice and be surrounded by a huge rookery of Chinstrap penguins who are not all perturbed by you being there.”
She said visitors would also see sheets of ice calving off

giant ice walls and the myriad colours of blue of the sky, ice and water.
“During the summer months the light is amazing and is in daylight almost 24 hours.” The season for Antarctic voyages is short – from November through early March. Visitors are limited to those travelling mainly by ship and therefore it is important clients book as early as possible to ensure a booking on their chosen voyage.
World Journeys offer independent cruising aboard the M/V Antarctic Dream, which is a fully refurbished ice-strengthened vessel offering expedition style cruising, with the full comforts, and land excursions by Zodiac boats with expert naturalist guides.
An 11-day/10-night itinerary ex Ushuaia is priced from $9,455 per person share twin in the 2012/13 season.

Midsummer Madness at MasseyE arly in May, a bus load of Year 10-13 drama students
travelled out to Massey High School to take part in the
Annual Regional Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. The first group, directed by Head of Drama Aimee Cronin,
performed a 15-minute scene from A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, portraying the adventures and comedic romance of a
group of amateur actors and the fairies that inhabit a moonlit
forest. The second group performed a student-directed five-
minute scene from the comedy Twelfth Night, a play filled
with mind games and mischief. Directed by Meg Wakelin,
the scene acted out a prank played on two unsuspecting
characters. The students all did an amazing job. The dedication and
spirit from those involved was great to see, as is the deep pool
of acting talent at Corran. A huge amount of fun was had creating characters and
decorating the students with glitter, liquid crayon and mous-
taches and finally seeing the scenes come to life on the Mas-
sey High School stage.Behind the scenes was just as important with helpers Ash-
leigh Wales, Natalie Seagar, Natty Sergent and parent Suzanne
Thompson taking time out of their day to get the thespians
made up for their scenes. The biggest helper of all, however,
was drama teacher Aimee Cronin who organised the entire
event working extremely hard as a director, supporting Meg
with her direction, and pulling all the loose ends together. Well done to everyone who took part; the Sheilah Winn
Festival is a great way to bring the Bard’s words to life and to
experience Shakespeare as he meant it.
CONSTANCE DUTHIE SCHOLARSHIp
K athleen Appleby was completely lost for words
when her name was announced as the Constance
Duthie Scholarship winner at prizegiving in December
2008, but those that know the Year 12 student were not
in the least bit surprised. The recipient of countless dili-
gence awards since her earliest days in Year 1, Kathleen
is well known as one of the hardest working students
at Corran, achieving outstanding academic results and
participating to the maximum in school life.A member of the Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and
Chapel Choir, Kathleen has made an enormous contribu-
tion to the music department and had the opportunity
to attend two of Corran’s music tours to Brisbane and
Melbourne. Keen on both soccer and netball, Kathleen has been
just as busy on the sports field and has just completed
her silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. A school librarian, School Guide and on this year’s
Ball Committee and part of the successful Corran Stage
Challenge, Kathleen also, rather amazingly, had time to
fit in a six-week exchange visit to Havergal College in
Toronto, Canada earlier in the year.A talented artist, Kathleen received the top IGCSE
mark in the 2008 CIE exams in her year group and
achieved the highest average grade at Corran in her
year for the IGCSE subjects she sat. She is currently working hard towards her AS Level
examinations later in the year and hopes to pursue an
engineering degree and possibly explore the Defence
Forces further down the track.

The Kiwi leader Is there any such thing as a distinctive New Zealand
leadership style? If so, what are its elements and how
relevant are these to today’s world? Reg BiRchfield seaRches foR clues.
“i’m struck by the tremendous variation in the personalities
and styles of the effective general managers and chief
executives i’ve been exposed to over the years. i’ve seen
effective senior managers who are analytical introverts and
effective senior managers who are charismatic extroverts.”
That said, there are some traits he associates with the best
of New Zealand leaders. “integrity comes to mind,” he says.
our public service, for example, “is amongst the least corrupt
in the world and generally high levels of integrity, fair dealing
and down-to-earth honesty are elements of New Zealand
leadership.”in his first book, The Dance of Leadership, cammock
identified passion, integrity, courage and faith as four critical
leadership characteristics. and he believes a concern for others
and a sense of self are both pivotal and discrete characteristics
of effective leaders. They represent what he calls, “character at a
deeper level”. so, consider the effective Kiwi leaders you know
and ask whether they display these characteristics. This does
not, of course, make them uniquely Kiwi.cammock thinks New Zealanders’ capacity to “do much
with little and to be highly adaptive and innovative” influences our approach to leadership. our competence with
few resources is, he says, a hallmark. “i think of ed hillary’s
himalayan Trust raising money internationally and projecting
the best of New Zealand expertise into remote places in Nepal
in the early 1960s,” he says.
“More recently, small, highly innovative organisations like
the New Zealand america’s cup campaign and [motorcycle
designer] John Britten and his team showed our capacity to
compete at a world-class level with a fraction of the resources
of their competitors.” There are, of course, dozens of similar world-class innovators operating in New Zealand in similar ways and who
are unquestionably leaders in their field. These innovators
include movie makers, actors, designers, engineers, artists,
writers, sports people and the like.“i think we have a capacity to be successful without
getting too full of ourselves,” says cammock. in the business
arena he thinks “our best ceos tend to be humble and a
little more frontline-connected than some of their overseas

4 WIFT NZ Magazine 2010 Awards Edition
Hello All2010 has been a year filled with cutbacks and cancelled TV shows, theatre has had limited ticket sales, films have been delayed and crews have waited while their start dates disappear or get pushed out. Without sounding clichéd, although it is true that when the going gets tough the tough get going I have been delighted at the help I have had in putting together the well supported 8th annual WIFT Awards. Doing so has reminded – even reassured – me that we indeed do have a thriving supportive community out there who – even in tough times – freely give their product, their expert advice and most of all their TIME.
The show this year will again deliver a star– studded top rating entertainment extravaganza with a few surprises. The Eradus after party will give many a chance to catch up and celebrate the successes of the year (there have been so many!) but let’s not forget that the heart of the event is to support WIFT which, without such events and the opportunity to fundraise, could become yet another victim of the recession.
I would like to make a special welcome and mention to Susi Newborn, our new ED, and her side kick Nia, who have got their hands dirty with me, and had fun throughout, as well as my good mates and fair dinkum producers Gavin Wood and Ali Black. Special mention has to go to our Chair-person Catherine Fitzgerald who has supported us all through this difficult year and just quietly got the job done. Enjoy the celebration, you deserve it, and EUREKA cheers to all you women out there who make a difference and are changing the world one frame at a time!

screen industry has marked them out as women to celebrate this year. With some at the helm of major ground breaking projects and businesses, and others tirelessly and steadily doing what they do so well in the engine room, all of our finalists demonstrate how important both leadership and collaboration is to delivering rich, and rewarding and thought provoking entertainment. The diversity of achievements is remarkable – we see the gamut of the screen industry – TV and film, the craft and technology, educational, documentary, entertainment, drama, marketing, current affairs, programming and policy making represented here. Selecting winners in each of these categories was a challenge to the judges who undertook this difficult job so conscientiously. On behalf of WIFT NZ we thank them for their time and generosity of spirit

I read an article recently that pointed out how much money organisations spend on ineffective training.
As someone who has worked as a senior manager and HR professional for a number of years, I am a big believer in the 70-20-10 rule when it comes to training:
• 70% of learning takes place on-the-job, through ‘real life’ experience
• 20% comes through receiving feedback and observing or learning alongside others
• 10% comes from formal ‘classroom’ training.
This model helps keep your training programme balanced, ensuring a mix of hands on and theoretical or knowledge-based learning.
Classroom learning has a place in this balanced approach, but the 70-20-10 model reminds us that most people learn most of the skills they need ‘on-the-job’.
Travel is a great example of an industry where people do their best learning in a real work environment. Working in travel requires extensive
knowledge of systems, processes and destinations, but it also requires customer service and people skills. These ‘soft’ skills are difficult to learn in a classroom environment.
Whether you are training staff who are new to the travel industry or up-skilling more experienced agents, the training you offer needs to include a balance of different types of learning.
Your training also needs to deliver return on investment. A recent US study found that 40% of people who participate in off-job training fail to apply their new knowledge to their job when they return to the workplace, and only 50% of training investments result in improved performance.*

In the past couple of years everyone has been taken to the social media bandwagon so to speak, with the first stop often being Facebook. Please don’t get me wrong, as an ardent Facebooker both personally and professionally, I see this as a very positive notion. What does somewhat worry me however, is the number of businesses who seem to be happy standing in the corner of the party speaking to themselves, so to speak.
Like with any form of marketing, no matter how electrifying your content or message - unless you’ve got an audience it just isn’t going to be heard. If you are reading this and thinking that you fall into this boat, don’t worry, you’re not alone. This is a predicament even some of most notable travel brands seem to find themselves in. One well known travel brand I follow has been posting virtually daily for over a year now, with a grand total of 150 fans – of which it looks like nearly half are staff, not to mention their respective family and friends.
I’ve worked with travel and tourism companies in several ways to grow Facebook fans, here are a few of my top suggestions;
• Add a line to your email signatures with links to your main social media channels, with a clear message telling your customers what you want them to do. i.e. Like Us on Facebook
• Be sure to include a Facebook ‘Like Box’ on your website rather than a link, this way people can ‘Like’ your page without leaving your site. You can this social plugin in the ‘Resources; section of your Page Admin section.
• Actively encourage your customers to ‘Like’ your Facebook page at events. Often just reminding people to do this will create likes, however if you really want to up the ante, put up an incentive.
• Under the Admin Section of the new Timeline Facebook page, you’ll find a tab called build audience. From here you can invite subscribers to your email newsletter to become Facebook fans too.
• Facebook advertising is a superb way to build a fan base and online exposure cost effectively. Allowing you to target your customers in ways you may not have imagined. Log-in and give it a bash; just be sure to be explicit in what action you want people to take.

Who’s the boss?
Does fear grip you when you think about have a difficult conversation with a particular staff member? Do you have some staff that you are afraid to manage because of their attitude and behaviours?
Managing people can seem somewhat overwhelming at times. It is both the most enjoyable and most difficult part of being a manager. And when it gets too hard, or a dominant personality takes over you can sometimes feel like giving up.
As a manager, supervisor, or team leader, having to
criticize or discipline a staff member’s performance is a task you can dread. However your failure to do so properly will often “snowball” and have a negative impact on your whole staff’s attitude, morale, motivation, and productivity. Your failure to establish clear behaviour and performance standards will, in turn, affect your own personal success as a manager thus making you look bad to your own boss and your staff.
We often talk to managers who don’t confront the undesirable behaviours of certain staff members and they say ‘that is just the way Sue is’ or ‘if I confront John he will probably file a personal grievance’ or ‘I just can’t be bothered dealing with the aggravation’. As managers you have an obligation to ensure that all staff are being treated fairly and that means being consistent in managing staff.
There is hope! With brave and positive management you can change attitudes and behaviours. Your failure to speak up or discipline can results in the appearance of unfairness to all concerned. Your productive staff see your control being undermined and feel taken advantage of while the problem staff member continues to take advantage of you.
So what can you do change the unwanted behaviours of an individual?
• Say ‘no’. When the staff member asks for something that is a discretionary reward then say no. If they haven’t earnt the privilege and are coming to you
knowing you will back down then saying no sends the powerful message that you won’t be intimated by them.
• Tackle the behaviour head on. Pull the staff member up on the behaviours that are not acceptable in your workplace. If you don’t what a certain behaviour then you have to stop it.
• Communicate to the staff member about how you feel about their attitude and behaviours. Let them know that you won’t tolerate any longer and that if it persists you will have to take further action.
• Reward good behaviour and ensure that staff who are exhibiting the types of behaviour you want are acknowledged for that.
• Show your productive employees that you are in control before the undesired behaviour takes root and becomes part of your staff’s culture.
Leading means setting the example you want to see in others. There’s no fear in that, is there? It’s easy to talk yourself out of doing something, why not spend a little extra time talking yourself into doing something. That could be the very thing that gives you your next break or pushes you on to greatness.

Take the time now to have a good look at where you are at, and where you want to be – then put some numbers to the plan – that’s the budget!!!!
