World Mission Sunday

T oday marks the 90th anniversary of World

Mission Sunday. World Mis-sion Sunday was first ap-proved by Pope Pius XI in 1926, and organized by the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Pope Francis reminds us that World Mission Sunday “… invites us to consider the mission ad gentes as a great, immense work of mercy, both spiritual and material.” The Gospel mandate, which proclaims that the Good News be preached to the ends of the earth, means that the Church cares for those who do not know the Gospel by proclaiming God’s love, mercy and salvation to everyone in every nation. This mandate has not ceased. Rather, it is the ongoing mission of the Church to bring all people to the love and mercy of Christ. To this end, hundreds of thousands of missionaries walk the streets of the world announcing the Good News of love and mercy.

World Mission Sunday allows all of us to participate in this essential work. On that day, we are all invited to go out as missionary disciples offering our time, talent and treasure to bring the message of God’s love and compassion to the entire human family.

For more information on how you can become more involved in this vital work, please contact Msgr. Ed Lofton, Director of the Office of the Pon-tifical Mission Society at 843- 875-5002.

SJB Ministries

The term “minister” refers to individuals who have been received a call from God to use the gifts giv-en to them. This call has been confirmed through a process of study and examination which has also equipped them to perform specific pastoral re-sponsibilities within the Church. There are many ministries that one can be a part of at St. John the Beloved. If you aren’t sure where your talents lie, please visit our website for our Ministry Handbook which offers more information on the ministries availa-ble at St. John the Beloved.

Scripture Reflection

T he First Reading today comes to us from the Book of Sirach, which was

once known as the Wisdom of Sirach. As is the norm with Sirach, he gets right to the point in the first verse of the reading: “The Lord God is a God of justice who knows no favorites.”

We are all familiar with the idea of favorites: we may have a favorite color, or a favorite food, or a favorite flower. However, it is comforting to know that God has no favorites. We are all His children. This fact is rein-forced over and over in the Bible.

Consider the following: “For there is no favoritism with God.” (Romans 2:11); “For the Lord your God is the God of gods…who favors no person and accepts no bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17); St Peter opened a sermon with these words: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiali-ty.” (Acts 10:34). We may sense that God does not have favorites, that He loves us all equally, that we all can be saved, but we also need to note that God cannot be bribed or bought.

What God expects of us is for us to be disciples, to be good stewards, to live righteous lives. If we sincerely do that, if we pursue holiness as we are called to do, then truly as the Lord tells us in today’s Gospel, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who hum-bles himself will be exalted.” God is good — to all of us.
