The past two weekends we had many children receive their first communion during our Sunday liturgies. We friars visited with them before each of the masses and you could see they were excited and nervous and anxious all

at once. They had plans for post-first communion parties, and were looking forward to cake, ice cream, donuts with Oreo sprinkles, and for one, cucumber sandwiches, a healthy choice! Even amid their nervousness, they did fine and were happy to be out in the gathering space for photographs and on to family celebrations. They now join us on Sundays around the table of the Lord. Many thanks to all who helped to prepare them and congratulations to our young friends. Also, many thanks to all who have contributed to our 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. As you can see in the chart below, we have moved much closer to our goal and our participation rate has also gone up significantly. As always, thank you for your generosity. Blessings on your week!

Our Mission Statement

Inspired by our patron Francis of Assisi, we seek to proclaim the reign of God by growing in Holiness through our experience of Christ in word, sacrament and one another, offering Hope to those who hunger for human dignity, and extending Hospitality to all.

M igrant farm workers travel from place to place in search of work that better provides for them and

their families. In North Carolina they come to work in our fields and pick many of our fruits, vegetables, and tobacco. They also work on our Christmas tree farms. Most often these workers are men who leave their families in their native countries and travel alone. They are here for months on end, living in temporary housing with very few amenities and no transportation. Our Migrant Ministry here at St. Francis of Assisi serves our migrant brothers by driving them to and from Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary parish in Louisburg each Sunday all summer. One Sunday a month we also host a Fiesta of food and fun with the farm workers and plan to, one Saturday night, take the farm workers to a North Carolina FC soccer game. Volunteers are needed to drive the farm workers to and from mass every Sunday from June 4 – September 24, to help with the fiestas, and the soccer game. Please sign up if you can help in anyway. Visit http://bit.ly/sfamigrantministry2017 Thank you! Your kindness means so much to these farm workers. Contact Bruce Cartier at [email protected] or 919-900-0452 for more information. Our Migrant Ministry is a ministry of solidari-ty that affirms the inherent dignity of each person. We’ve learned from our Church and Jesus himself that human dignity is about more than having enough food, water and shelter: as crucial as these are. It’s about respect, advancement, and rest. It’s about dignified work, the freedom to worship, and connection. Our Migrant Ministry is a minis-try of connection, encounter, and presence. Whether to Mass, to the store, to a fiesta, or to the soccer game, the migrant farm work-ers are invited into our lives and everyone grows. God shows up and everyone chang-es. Won’t you come and join us?

M eet Him here once, twice, or every Sunday this summer from June 4 – September 24 as you travel with other St. Francis parishioners and pick up migrant farm workers at camps in

the Louisburg area and drive them to mass at Our Lady of the Rosary.

Won’t you embrace this opportunity, step out of the comfort of North Raleigh for a few hours on a Sunday afternoon and encounter Christ in our hardworking Latino brothers? “Christ’s followers are not individuals caught up in a privatized spirituality, but persons in community, devoting themselves to others … There are no borders, no limits: he sends us to everyone.” - Pope Francis

F ollowing our Franciscan tradition of serving others and going to the margins, high school youth will spend a week serving at a summer camp for children from the Hispanic Family Center in Raleigh. The experience will allow youth to travel to sites that will open their eyes to our diverse community, deepen

their faith by discovering the joy of an encounter and working side by side those who face daily challenges. Up-on return to campus in the evening, youth will spend time in fellowship, have meaningful prayer experiences, and develop relationships with peers. Visit http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040449aaad2e5-parent to sign up for a volunteer slot!

O ur Young Adults Ministry is sending 4 delegates to spend a week with the Franciscan Friars and their guests

at St. Francis Inn. The Inn has been serving guests for over 35 years, providing hope to those on the margins through good food and a welcoming spirit. We’ll be leaving REALLY EARLY tomorrow (Monday) morning, getting back REALLY LATE on Friday evening, and we ask for your prayers for safe travel and God’s grace as we drive to Philadelphia for our week of service.

For more information about this or other ministry events for adults in their 20’s and 30’s, contact [email protected], or call 919-847-8205 and ask for Jason. Thank you for your prayers!

Pray for our Delegation to St. Francis Inn this week!

For Help and Hope

O ur Lady of the Rosary parish in Louisburg, NC has the main food pantry in this poor and rural community where approximately 24% of the population live below the

poverty line. Hundreds of people each month have trouble stretching their income to cover food. They come to this food pantry for help but also for hope. A smile, a listening ear, and wishes for a good day with a bag of food may mean the difference between total despair and the will to go on, especially for many young Hispanic families in these troubling times. Won’t you help?

This weekend, grocery bags will be handed out after all masses and your donations may be dropped off at the truck in our parking lot next weekend, May 20/21. Volunteers are needed to accept donations. Please sign up here if you can help: bit.ly/OLRfooddrivemay2017. Families are welcome!

Needed items: Rice and maseca flour, dried beans, canned tomatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, dry soup packages, juice, oatmeal or dry cereal, diapers (all sizes). Grocery store gift cards are also a great option. Checks made out to Our Lady of the Rosary parish are very much appreciated as well. For more information please contact Kathe Henke at [email protected]

Family Promise

T hrough our partnership with Family Promise (formally known as Wake Interfaith Hospitali-

ty Network) or WIHN), during Easter week we sheltered five families here at St. Francis attempting to transition out of homelessness. It takes about 100 volunteers to make this happen each time we host families. This time was no exception. Led by our selfless ministry leader Ron Smith you prepared our space for their coming and going, you prepared and served meals, you shared a meal in fellow-ship with the families, you played with and cared for their children, you drove them to and from the day center, you did laundry – all because you care. You lived the Gospel, walked in mercy, and celebrated the Easter mysteries in one of the most beautiful and tangible ways. Thank you!

Our next hosting is July 4th week. Join us!

Refugee Resettlement How you can help.

W e mentioned some months ago that we are working with the U.S. Committee for

Refugees and Immigrants to sponsor another ref-ugee family here at St. Francis. Well, our journey is about to begin!

How can you help? Very soon we will need all household items; kitchen items, furniture of all kinds, bedding, towels and linens, everything to donate to this family. We welcome your donations and if you could hold onto them until mid-June, we would be very grateful. If you are interested in participating in this ministry, have donations, or questions, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

Happy Mother’s Day

F ield Day is a tradition that Franciscan School

students in grades K-8 eagerly await every year. The school’s Home and School Association organizes the event and students enjoy fun competitions such as the tug of war, relay races, and a volleyball match pitting the eighth graders against the teachers and staff. This year, for the second time in history, Field Day was held indoors because of the threat of rain. The weather didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits as the Field Day committee, parent volunteers, faculty, and staff all made the event a success.

We are accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year for K- 8th grade. For more information, please contact Lura Tysiac at [email protected] or call 919-847-8205x469.

W hen I was young I spent Sunday mornings serving coffee and donuts after mass at the Church of the Holy Family, in Novi,

Michigan. I switched from my dress-up princess gown to a bright yellow vest to distribute extra large tootsie rolls and raise money for the disabled, with my dad through the Knights of Columbus. In middle school, I wrote letters in Spanish to kindergarteners at the Academy of the Americas Bilingual School-an impoverished school in downtown Detroit. Why? Because giving warm coffee to Mrs. O'Brien, my church parishioner, made me smile more than playing with my dolls. Because distributing tootsie rolls and raising funds for the needy made me feel like a real princess. Because the thought of a young child reading a happy letter made me warm inside.

There is nothing more rewarding than service. Service invokes an unparalleled class of happiness: it is allur-ing, angelic, and just the slightest bit addicting. When organizing a prom for the disabled through Raleigh Youth Council, I was filled with resonating joy and happiness, when I helped with building a ramp with the Knights of Columbus for my theology teacher, Mr. Hudson. My heart swelled with pride, and while working with Habitat for Humanity through my school, I felt true happiness - the magnificent kind of happi-ness that only comes from serving others. Service opportunities have made me grow positively and spir-itually: I have learned to thank God for every person in my life. My most cherished service experience, a one-of-a-kind rewarding summer service opportunity in India, has opened my eyes to my potential to serve.

I began teaching dance to disabled children at Dad-dy's Home Special School in Goa, India when I was fourteen. Daddy's Home needed a teacher, and I was visiting my grandparents nearby. As a competi-tive dancer, I've led many dance classes, but teaching at Daddy's Home is different: these kids provoke my curiosity, and challenge my creativity. Take Yogesh, who originally told me his "arms don't work." Upon further investigation-teaching him different moves and evaluating his range of motion - I discovered a more solvable problem: joint inflexibility. By designing cho-reography which minimizes rotation, I showcase his

Funeral Ministry We are looking for help with our funeral ministry. This is a very important ministry to our Community. We would like to have more Sacristans to help get the church ready for the funeral by lighting candles, getting communion ready, and helping the family know what to do during the service. We are also looking for Columbarium Attendants to open the niches and prepare for the inurnment service. On the job training is provided for both. You volunteer when you are available. Inspired by our patron Francis of Assisi, we seek to proclaim the reign of God by growing in Holiness through our experience of Christ in word, sacrament and one another, offering Hope to those who hunger for human dignity, and extending Hospitality to all.

May 15 St Vincent de Paul SVdP prevented a family from being evicted. The father/husband had to take a pay cut because the company’s sales were down. He couldn’t exist on his reduced salary so he found another job. He was short on his rent for April and as a result was facing eviction. He wouldn’t get paid on his new job until after the eviction date. We were able to assist the family with the rent money they needed. The next meeting will be in the Padua Room of the Assisi Com-munity Center beginning at 6:45pm.

strengths. Similarly, Raja presented a difficult challenge: he could not execute rudimentary footwork, because if he crossed his feet he lost balance; however, after trying different motions those that moved side to side - I found that certain types of complex footwork complemented his talents. In fact, after a few days of learning, we discovered his new talent: the moonwalk. That a young body seemingly incapable of crossing one foot in front of the other can, with a bit of encouragement, move like Michael Jackson in his brilliance, that moment was sublime.

While this service experience has helped me impact my students by helping them gain confidence, and believe in their dreams despite their disabilities, this experience has also impacted my personal growth in a monumen-tal way. Through these students, I've found that knowledge isn't just found in textbooks, and that ser-vice is a form of learning. Bonding with these handicapped students, my desire to understand disabilities became a thirst to solve them: I wanted to ameliorate the quality of my students' lives. I was driven by inquisitiveness and passion. I researched ways to aid disabled children, by joining my school's robotics team and attending summer school programs in biosciences and engineering. I now aspire to become a biomedical engineer so that I can make effective prosthetics available economically to ali who need it - all because of the students who gave me the opportunity to serve them.

Serving others is important, because it impacts both those you serve, and yourself in incredible ways. Serving others has made me experience jubilant happiness. Through sharing my talents with others, I have succeeded in impacting the lives of the less fortunate, and making them feel happy and confident. The most inspiring aspect of serving others is that service can help you find your purpose...while you are impacting the lives of others. Second guessing yesterday

Is like a thief that robs one of the joy of today

And like a roaring beast

That makes one fearful of tomorrow.
