JANUARYTHE Fremantle Workers Club prepares to celebrate
its centenary, two years after nearly going down the gurgler. “Just as I said at the meeting two years ago, we will survive for another 100 years if the membership wishes,” said an upbeat president Don Whittington (above). The smiles and backslaps don’t last long, with the club later in the year deciding—by no means unanimously—to sell its historic Henry Street premises and amalgamate with lawns and bowls clubs to form a “super club” down at Ellen Street.
THOUSANDS turn out to protest the Barnett
government’s shark cull program. The Greens threaten to take the government to court while shark expert Hugh Edwards slams the policy as ham fisted”. y the end of the year the government has renewed then abandoned the program.
MELVILLE mayor Russell Aubrey defends taking
out a restraining order against Councillor Nick Pazolli, whom the mayor described as a “little school bully”. While an interim order had been issued—causing Cr Pazolli considerable inconvenience and notoriety—the mayor’s application to the court for an ongoing order was chucked out.
FREMANTLE wins belated recognition for its role in
sending WWI troops to the front. Most Anzac centenary celebrations centre on Albany but there’s a push to ensure Fremantle’s role is properly marked.
BEACONSFIELD residents clap and cheer as 70 police
raid local properties searching
for drugs and stolen gear. For months locals in the vast public housing estates between South Street and Lefroy Road, dubbed the “Beacy Bronx” have been living in dread of neighbours and roaming gangs of youths. “I hope it scares the pants off the little buggers!” says Mott Mott.
DISTRESSED students walk out of eaconsfield
Tafe in disgust after learning some course fees are increasing 390 per cent. Some wannabe students break out in tears and don’t bother to enrol.
BELATED revelations that 4000 WA sheep died at
sea five months beforehand is further proof the live export trade is completely ineffective” says Fremantle-based Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren.
TWO projects worth a combined $80 million win
the nod from Fremantle city council. A $60m seven-storey hotel is to go up at the corner of Point and Adelaide Streets and a $21.5m seven-storey complex will replace Queensgate in William Street.
CAFE owner Ray Fiannaca warns traffic snarls along
South Terrace, South Street and Douro Road in South Freo are leading to accidents. “It’s absolute chaos,” he tells the Herald. “I’ve never seen anything like it. The cars are just zipping through here. A woman on a bike with two kids on a carriage behind was knocked over here last week.” Mr Fiannaca and others want speed humps and crosswalks to slow traffic down. “It’s the wild west on the weekends,” he says. “There has been punch-ups and pushing and shoving, because people are blocking traffic.”
LINDSAY LUTTON quits Fremantle council’s
design advisory committee, disillusioned with what he regards as a “development at all costs” agenda. A three-year member of the DAC—a panel of experts that provides advice on
design and architecture—he says it should be more independent and transparent.
THE Barnett government’s decision to sell disability
services commission accommodation has a very real impact on Shane Norton and his best mate John. The pair have shared the same place for 13 years but are forced to now live separately. “What the government is proposing to do with the privatisation of the homes and staff will be devastating to these disabled, disadvantaged and vulnerable men and women,” says Mr Norton’s sister, Gail Russell.
SPECULATION mounts about the future of
Fremantle’s iconic New Edition bookshop. “New Edition Bookshop is not closing,” says owner James Calligaro. By the end of the year it’s in new hands.
FEBRUARYNORTH FREMANTLE councillor Rob Fittock says
he’d rather be “in the jewel of the crown that is Fremantle, rather than a southern dag of a western suburbs council”. So that’d be a “no” from Rob about North Freo joining an amalgamated Mosman Park, Cottesloe, Claremont, Peppermint Grove, Nedlands and Subiaco super-council.
PARKED cars are compacting the soil and
wrecking the roots of 100-year-old oreton ay figs at outh Freo’s Wilson Park. By the end of the year bollards are in.
FREMANTLE disappears from the NBN roll-out
map when previously it had been earmarked for super-fast broadband within three years. Freo-based Greens tech-head senator Scott Ludlam ain’t happy.
AUSTRALIA is being left behind in the world human

2014 was the year when the Abbott Government tried to destroy solar. The Government wanted to axe the Renewable Energy Target but failed thanks to
the efforts of some solar heroes across industry and in Federal Parliament. That’s why we are holding the Summer of Solar.
This fantastic news means the Federal Government RET scheme remains in place unchanged. At least for now. Come February, the Government will be scheming on new ways to destroy solar.
So now is the perfect time to buy. Install solar this summer to slash your power bills and show our Prime Minister you care about solar.
By investing in rooftop solar you will be supporting lower power bills, clean energy jobs and a renewable energy future.

voted for marriage equality right. MacLaren was no doubt thrilled by the national security legislation that passed the national parliament in October, then.
KWINANA council rejects Cockburn council
attempts to revisit an amicable merger. The government instead seems happy to make Cockburn disappear altogether by extending Kwinana north and Fremantle south, with Spearwood the new boundary. By the end of the year it’s shifted a bit and the merged Cockburn-Kwinana is likely to be more Cockburn in identity than Kwinana.
LABOR MP Simone McGurk accuses the Barnett
government of failing to invest in Fremantle infrastructure, including notable heritage properties like the listed warders’ cottages in Henderson Street.
ALFRED BUCKLAND, 80, walks the streets putting up
posters to plead for the return of his stolen chihuahua, believed to be victim to a network of thieves who sell pets on Gumtree. “He was the joy of our life,” Mr Buckland tells Herald readers.
FREMANTLE playwright Kerry Bowden didn’t
know much about men’s sheds when she decided to set her play, Veneer, in one. The play tells the tale of Abe, a 17-year-old arsonist (played by Nick Stevenson, inset) ordered to complete community service at the
local men’s shed, where he forges friendships with men who set him on the right path. “I believe you must have spent many months crouched under workbenches to be able to capture so beautifully the essence of what a community men’s shed is all about,” Fremanshed’s Bill Johnstone told Bowden.
JACOB PETERSON, 11, narrowly escapes injury or
worse when a floodlight tower crashes to the ground next to the bench he’s sitting on at Len Shearer Reserve in Melville. The council conducts an immediate structural test on the remaining lights but then refuses to go public with the results.
ICONIC South Fremantle company Sealanes, already
a major supplier to WA mines and visiting cruise ships, lands its most lucrative contract ever: supplying Subway’s 146 WA stores.
SOUTH BEACH residents gasp at the construction
of a new apartment complex in their beachside nirvana they say has a “Homeswest aesthetic”.
Its exposed brown brick breaks local rules demanding render. Folk who’d bought off the plan aren’t happy either and claim it’s less salubrious than they were led to believe.
A “SCALED BACK” $3 million bar and concert
venue is approved for Arthur Head, with Fremantle council barrelling through opposition from locals and Aboriginal elder Richard Wilkes who’d said the venue would be a “desecration of sacred ground”. Cr Andrew Sullivan said failure to approve the venue would see Fremantle dubbed “WA’s new Dullsville”.

FEBRUARY: KULCHA DEAD! The Herald’s headline sends shockwaves through what remains of Fremantle’s arts and cultural community. The world-famous multicultural arts centre calls it a day after failing to secure enough government support to remain viable. News the iconic Fremantle and Television Institute is also leaving Fremantle, for new premises in Perth, adds to the pain.
FEBRUARY: AUSTRALIAN golf’s next big thing, Minjee Lee, 17, is back in Winthrop for a short spell following her first pro-tournament win. She took the Victorian Open by six shots, her awless swing earning thunderous applause, but as a junior can’t pocket prize money. She won the Freo Open at 14 and says she’s “still got the clipping from the paper” (the Herald marked the event). Golf’s in Minjee’s blood: her parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and cousins all played back in South Korea.

Coolbellup doctor Katie Attwell says it was getting grief from mates who don’t vaccinate their kids that inspired her pro-vacc campaign in hippy central.

THERE are signs Fremantle’s BID usiness mprovement istrict
is in trouble, with the local chamber of commerce CEO pulling out “because
it’s clearly not working”. The Herald had pegged as soon as it was created it was simply creating another layer of bureaucracy and cost: by the end of the year the is still puffing along, taking money out of retailers’ pockets without much to show for it.

GASTRO breaks out across seven south metropolitan aged care and

HOMELESS people are living in cars and caravans along Freo

FREMANTLE council lodges its formal submission on boundaries
and amalgamations to the WA local government advisory board. The submission largely mirrors the WA government’s preferred outcome for the city, which is to amalgamate with East Fremantle, take the eastern boundary to Stock Road, incorporating Bicton and Palmyra but excising O’Connor and Samson, and gobble up half of Cockburn. By the end of the year massive opposition to the death of Cockburn (Kwinana was to take the other half results in Fremantle’s new southern border retreating significantly, with ust Hamilton Hill now proposed to be taken.

THE Striker Balance Action Group fails to raise enough

NEW WA treasurer Mike Nahan—the MP for
Riverton—says Roe Highway stage 8 will be built to overturn the planning “bastardry” of previous Labor governments, despite the state government having budgeted zero dollars for its construction. Later in the year it emerges the Abbott government will fund the lion’s share of the road, now deemed to be a critical element of the newly minted “Perth Freight Route”. In the week before Christmas, the federal government confirms it’s handing over a billion or so for the state government to get on with building the link—with Roe the first cab off the rank.
FORMER Melville mayor June Barton says it’s “all out

The council is ruled with an iron fist by mayor Russell Aubrey and CEO Shayne Silcox, who complain formally about councillors who they believe are speaking out of turn.

places he and his brothers ran wild in while growing up are gone and parks that should ring with the sounds of children are silent. He’s on a mission to put the fun—and risk—back into outside play.
MAY: A GERMAN backpacker couple
accidentally set fire to their van at South Beach, to the delight of a nearby birthday party of nine-year-olds who got to see fire engines turn up.

FAMILY FRIENDLY NEW YEAR’S EVE
51 CANTONMENT ST, FREMANTLE www.clancysfishpub.com.au
storey apartments complex could lead to the old Liquorland site on Douro
Road being turned into a fast food outlet.SIMONE McGURK says she’s heard the Barnett government plans to sell the historic Henderson Street warders’ cottages. The government later confirms it plans to fix the places up and then flog them.
ONE of the last remaining Federation homes along East Fremantle’s
riverfront is under threat of demolition. 3 Riverside Road is on the council heritage list but not the state, and Cr Cliff Collinson fears even if the council opposes demolition an appeal to the powerful state administrative tribunal will see the place end up in the skip.
THE Barnett government commits $16 million to the Fremantle Dockers
training stadium at Cockburn Central.WHITE GUM VALLEY man Frank Sander—a long-time local real estate
agent—laments the destruction of trees in his neck of the woods, flattened to make way for big new homes and subdivisions. He says developers should make more of an effort to retain mature trees.
YOU read it first in the Herald: we publish our “hot tip” that former
Fremantle Ports CEO Kerry Sanderson is to be named WA’s next Governor—making her the state’s first woman in the role.
“PRINCE of the turf” Johnny Leslie Wilson is laid to rest at Fremantle,
aged 78.
THIEVES who rip valuable tropical plants from her garden break the heart
of Ardross widow Beverley Williams.AFTER two decades of Sunday night bopping the Zydecats leave Clancy’s
because it’s undergoing a reno. The band shifts over to the Fremantle Workers Club…
SIR TONY ROBINSON—the poor bastard will always be Baldrick, no
matter what else he does—films a sequence of his series Tour of Duty (for the Anzac centenary) at the Norfolk Hotel.
WE reveal that as part of the joint Barnett/Abbott governments’ “Perth
Freight Route” plan, all traffic lights are to be removed along Roe Highway, Stock Road, High Street and Stirling Highway, with side streets dead-ended, grade separations to occur and High Street to be “trenched”. It’s all so trucks can get in and out of the port faster. The plan effectively divides the port city. Greens Senator Scott Ludlam grills bureaucrats in Senate estimates, who refuse to divulge a business case and other details.• June to December published next weekend.
THE Hamilton Hill-based New Life Christian Community plans to open a 400-student high school in 2015, to be called Fremantle Christian College. The expansion comes as the Barnett government plans to amalgamate local state high schools due to low enrolments. Pictured are Julie and Wayne Hollett.

Not all Electricians are the same... most contractors don’t turn up when they say, if at all & when they do they are often rude, unpleasant & leave you with an unfair bill, a messy
house & feeling really annoyed.Hi, I’m Dave from “My Sparky”. I know good, reliable tradies are
hard to fi nd, that’s why I guarantee you’ll have me arrive
on time. I’ll be courteous, respectful & in uniform. I will
only do the best quality work - no short cuts, then clean up after
the job & leave you with a smile. If you’re not happy at the end
you’ll receive $50 cash, on me.

Naturally, buyers don’t like having to compete...
Buyers will often fi nd themselves making an offer to purchase in competition with others.
Agents have differing approaches as to how to deal with multiple offers but normally will inform buyers that their offer is one of many. Details of competing buyers’ offers are not normally revealed so as a buyer offering in competition with others, it is diffi cult to know what price and conditions will ensure purchasing success without paying signifi cantly more than the next highest offer.
Buyers ought to remember that agents have a legal responsibility to act in the best interests of their Principal (usually the seller) unless it is unlawful or unethical to do so. They are paid to ensure the buyer pays the highest possible price on the best possible terms.
One of the most effective ways to achieve this and discharge their fi duciary responsibility is to have multiple purchasers competing to buy. Naturally, buyers don’t like having to compete as it is almost impossible to gain a negotiable advantage in such circumstances.
When faced with buying in competition my advice to buyers is this:
Ask the agent if there are any other offers on the property before submitting your own offer. This knowledge might infl uence your initial offer.
Consider removing some of the conditions of your offer such as a Building Inspection Report clause especially for more modern homes.
Ask the agent about the seller’s preferred settlement period and try to make your offer fi t in with their needs.
The notion that agents should assume the buyer’s fi rst offer is not their “best offer” is nonsense. A buyer who tells the agent that this is their best offer should not assume the agent thinks it a lie.
Know that you may only get one chance at buying the property; the seller is under no obligation to provide you an opportunity to negotiate further.
Believe the agent when they tell you there are other offers in play. Buyers are prone to thinking the agent is telling fi bs; it is rare nowadays that they are.
Ask yourself if your best offer is really at your limit.
Please don’t shoot the messenger if you miss out. Being told your offer was one of many, choosing not to submit your best offer and missing out ought not to give rise to admonishing the agent.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)Life is really helping to scour old habits from your system. Ancient, repeated,
ritualistic patterns of behaviour, really don’t deliver the delight of insight, inspiration and intuition; no matter how sincerely they are enacted. A light is being shone in the dark and much is being revealed.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Sudden unexpected events keep arriving on the scene and throwing you from your
normal pattern of delight. Rest assured that each of these events is life trying it’s hardest to liberate you. It’s not always easy to greet our liberators with open arms. We mostly think they are our enemies.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) With Mercury at fi fteen degrees Capricorn, life is certainly adding
some friction to your tale. But without friction, there is no traction. When you are called to act upon your ideas and build something out of them, be clear that this is a good thing. Hone your craft with a passion.
CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)The Moon begins its week in Pisces. This is a watery, intuitive placement. Shift
your focus from all the qualities that go with your shell and your claws, to the sweetness and sensitivity that goes with your core. If your action begins from a place of sensitivity, it will end up on track.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22)These are transformational times. Every door you close, leads to a
new one that needs opening. It will take insight to get yourself out of the maze. This insight is available, if you focus on the very practical needs that are driving this round of change. Life is really working with you here.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)By now you should have come to accept that those events and people who are
opposing you, are in fact helping you. You can let the stress around this one go. Focus now on those who are off ering you love and support. Drop the hard-nosed independence and graciously receive.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)Fortunately, Mars is in Aquarius, pumping lots of energy into your quest
for innovation. There are plenty of stuck energies doing their level best to bog you down. You will have to step into deliberate action, to make your way through this moment. Choose – and freely use your will.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)Saturn has offi cially left Scorpio for now. He will briefl y be back a little
down the track. Life is no longer calling you to wisdom, by asking you to slow it down, or stop. There are less obstacles. You have either gotten the gift, or not. Feel the lightness in your heart. Share it recklessly.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)Saturn has arrived. He is paying a brief visit for now. He will be back for a longer
one soon enough. Saturn has an entirely undeserved reputation. His job is to deliver wisdom. He regularly gets blamed for creating obstacles. All he really wants is for us to taste timeless patience.
CAPRICORN (DEC 22 – JAN 19)There are now four planets in Capricorn. Whether you want it or not, life is
asserting its power in your heart, and you in turn are having a fairly momentous eff ect on others. For those who are willing to go on a powerful, honest journey with you, this is a major blessing. Love truly.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)The presence of Mars in your sign is proving to be a big bonus. He is fi lling you with
energy, adventurousness and laughter. The more you move and enjoy your own energy, your own life force, the more your happiness builds momentum. Keep it grounded by enjoying physicality.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)The Moon kicks off her week in your sign. She charges you up with all the things you love most – feeling, intuition,
visual art of the highest order, and an ever expanding love of all life’s everyday symbols. This is a time where communication is imperative. Do it your way.
