Organising the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce

and Industry (BCCI) election is a mammoth task, considering the cumbersome electoral process, huge number of voters and the limited space available at the voting venue, the electoral committee of the Chamber said yesterday.

The election scheduled for March 10 will see thousands of businessmen casting their votes to elect the Board of Directors of the BCCI.

“More than 50,000 members have already registered to vote in the elections,” said Chairperson of the elections committee, Jassim Hassan Abdul A’Al.

He said that the election is going to be the largest in the history of BCCI and will be a challenge for the organizers

with limited space available at Isa Cultural Centre, the venue of the elections.

“The number of Commercial Registrations with BCCI has increased dramatically and as a result, we have an increase in the number of voters. More than 50,000 have already registered and the numbers will go up even further in the next 10 days. To accommodate a high number of people will be a challenge for us because of the space limitations

at the venue, but we will make it work. In spite of the limitations of the venue as well as the limited budget, we will do our best,” he told DT News.

He said that an open meeting will be held tomorrow at 11 am on the first floor of Bait Al Tijjar premises in Sanabis which will shed light on the election process. He urged members to attend the meeting as many topics related to the elections such as its preparations,

candidacy prerequisites and so on will be discussed in depth.

In a statement released yesterday, BCCI has urged its members to renew their membership and CR to be eligible to vote. Members of the Chamber whose CR or membership will expire on or before March 10 can renew their CR and membership in accordance with the CR records of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

Foreign Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa and

Information Affairs Minister Ali Al Romaihi have deplored Qatar’s attempts to internationalize the Hajj pilgrimage.

The Foreign Minister condemned the Qatari call as an issue “out of discussion” to Muslim and Arab countries.

“Whenever one of your plans and conspiracies fail, you return to your tale of internationalising the management of the two Holy Mosques. You had

better shut up because the world is laughing at you,” he wrote on Twitter.

Information Affairs Minister Ali Al Rumaihi denounced the attempt to politicize religious rites or the internationalisation of the Two Holy Mosques. “The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s facilitation and service to visitors of the Holy Kaaba and the Prophet’s Mosque have always been appreciated by the entire Muslim world,” he told the Asharq Al Awsat daily yesterday.

“The great Saudi efforts cannot be overlooked or negated except by the dismissive and malicious, or someone who does not want the welfare of the

Muslim Umma, its unity, cohesiveness or progress,” he said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa said the Qatari attempt exposes the bad intentions, the political bankruptcy, and the moral failure of the country. “There is not a single religious centre that people visit for worshipping purposes that are not managed by a sovereign state. In the case of Saudi Arabia, we have the best example of honesty, commitment, care and protection,” the minister said.

The House of Representatives also condemned the move to internationalise the two Holy Mosques’

custodianship and management. “This is a Saudi affair. No party has the right to intervene or demand its internationalisation,” the MPs said in a statement, which condemned “the false call of the politically bankrupt regimes, with bad intentions.”

Calling the move a “cheap bid”, the statement said Qatar is attempt is to cover up its failure in managing its own affairs. “The Council calls upon all Arab and Islamic countries and religious organisations to express their position on these false calls aimed at spreading division and disagreement in the Islamic world,” the statement said.

Quake rattles Taiwan

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near

the coastal city of Hualien in Taiwan late on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, killing at least two people and causing several buildings to collapse.

The quake struck about 22 km (14 miles) northeast of Hualien shortly before midnight, and the epicenter was very shallow at just 1km, the USGS said.

“Two people were unfortunately killed, and 114 have suffered light or severe injuries,” Taiwan’s Premier William Lai told an emergency government meeting.

A number of aftershocks hit the area, but there was no word of any tsunami warning.

Hualien is a popular tourist destination on Taiwan’s eastern coast and home to about 100,000 people.

“The president has asked the cabinet and related ministries to immediately

launch the ‘disaster mechanism’ and to work at the fastest rate on disaster relief work,” President Tsai Ing-wen’s office said in a statement.

Lai said the government was urgently repairing a major highway damaged by the quake. He said the government would provide further updates on the situation later on Wednesday morning.

Among the buildings toppled in the quake was the Marshal Hotel in Hualien, where three people were trapped inside, the government said.

Four other buildings, including two hotels and a military hospital, also tilted during the quake in Hualien, which is located about 120 kilometers (75 miles) south of the capital, Taipei.

The government said two bridges in the city were either cracked or could not be used due to the quake.

On Sunday an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck nearby.

Yemeni forces retake strategic city: officialSanaa

Yemeni forces loyal to the country’s internationally

recognised government yesterday recaptured a key crossroads town in the southwestern province of Hodeidah in an effort to cut off supply lines to the rebels, officials said.

The forces backed by airstrikes from a Saudi-led coalition took control of the town of Hays after two weeks of fierce fighting against the rebels, the officials said. The fighting has killed at least 85 people from both sides in the past 48 hours, they said.

The internationally recognized government and the coalition aimed at cutting off supply lines from the central province of Ibb to the rebels in Hodeidah, the officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media.

Drug addicts numbering 30,000 in the Kingdom

are costing the exchequer over BD35 million a month in treatment expenses and other services, MP Jalal Kadhim told the Council of Representatives yesterday.

He said this while revealing the latest data on drug addiction as seen by the Bahraini courts during the past few years, in the presence of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa.

“I am a member of the investigative parliamentary committee into the performance of Health Ministry. We have visited the de-addiction unit in the Psychiatric Hospital and attended seminars about drug addiction causes among the Bahraini youth. In Bahrain, we have 30,000 drug addicts. 8,000 of them are receiving treatment in public institutions. Each addict daily costs the government around BD120-BD150 in treatment fees,” the MP said.

Kadhim said this while calling for finding effective solutions to the “key issues” such as drug abuse and addiction among the Bahraini youth instead of toughening punishments.

The lawmaker also discussed with the minister the answers to queries he had submitted earlier in regards to the latest statistics of the ministry related to court cases, their types and numbers.

Among the topics discussed were the cases seen before the civil, criminal and Sharia courts (203, 941 cases) between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2016.

SCD: More efforts needed Another minister who was present at yesterday’s session was Health Minister Faeqa Al Saleh, who discussed the queries of MPs with regards to Bahraini Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) patients and the establishment of a health centre in Hidd.

DT News reported on Saturday that Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee Head MP Abdulla Binhowail had asked the

minister about the latest data on SCD patients and the services provided to them.

The minister said in a written reply that 189 Bahrainis and 2 expats died because of SCD between the years 2011-2016.

During the discussion yesterday, MP Binhowail questioned: “why the ministry didn’t establish a specialised centre to receive female SCD patients, similarly to male patients”.

The minister had mentioned in her written reply that “female SCD patients are given prominence at the Accident and Emergency Department in Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) and that a special zone is allocated for them”.

While quoting female patients and Bahrain SCD Friendship Society, insisted that the minister’s reply contradicts with the existing situations at SMC.

He said, “It is true that the female patients are received in a special zone, Room D, at the Accident and Emergency Department at SMC. But, they don’t receive the same services provided to men at the specialised centre inside the SMC.”

DT News reported earlier that the Hereditary Blood Disorder Centre was opened at the SMC in 2014 under the patronage of the Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa and only receives male SCD patients.

“The average waiting period for male SCD patients at the centre to be treated is 25 minutes, while female patient wait for an average of eight hours to receive treatment. This is because of the existing pressure on the Accident and Emergency Department in SMC. Additionally, they wait for two to three days for a bed at the hospital general wards. Female SCD patients are also complaining about receiving treatment from general practitioners, while male patients are treated by specialised staff in hereditary blood diseases. This is clear discrimination between male and female patients. This is shocking and unacceptable,” MP Binhowail added.

On her part, Minister Al Saleh insisted that “there’s no discrimination between male and female patients in Bahraini”, adding that “there’s a special way of

treatment for patients of each gender”.

According to the latest statistics, 78 female SCD patients passed away in Bahrain as a result of the complications of the disease between 2011-2016. Ten of the deaths among women were among Bahrainis and were recorded in 2016.

announced plans to increase private sector contribution to expedite housing reforms in the Kingdom.

The move follows the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman

bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier to strengthen partnership with the private sector to fast-track the distribution of housing units to the citizens.

Speaking during a meeting with the representatives of

real-estate development companies, the Minister said that the ministry has enhanced its efforts to fast-track procedures and to ensure the sustainability of the schemes.

“Three projects have already been completed,” the Minister told the representative of the

real estate companies citing the projects in the Northern City, Al-Lawzi Housing project and Deerat Al-Oyoun Project.

Al-Lawzi Housing project is on the government-owned land in the Northern City, while Al-Lawzi Housing project is part of the “Mazaya”

scheme which provided 2500 units since 2014. Deerat Al-Oyoun Project is a 3100-unit housing deal signed between Housing Ministry and Diyar Al-Muharraq Company.

The minister also assured that the ministry is holding studies to reduce the

number of Mazaya eligible beneficiaries, which, he said, “requires increasing the number of offered units.”

Real estate developers welcomed the government’s desire to strengthen partnership with the private sector.

The House of Representatives reviewed a special report

on “free visa” phenomenon, an illegal employment issue, during their weekly meeting in Gudaibiya yesterday.

The discussion of the report, submitted by a special investigative committee formed to look into the phenomenon and the ways to tackle it, was delayed several times during the past few months.

Formed three years ago, the eight-member committee was tasked to probe the causes behind the increasing phenomenon and to recommend effective methods to eradicate it.

The committee discussed the matter with the relevant authorities that included Labour and Social Development, Industry, Commerce and Industry, Interior and Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministries, in

addition to the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), municipal councils of the four governorates of the Kingdom, Bahrain Chamber for Commerce and Industry and several labour unions and societies.

More efforts neededDuring the discussion, a number of MPs including Adel Al Assoomy, Majid Al Majid and Adel Hameed, accused the authorities of not making sufficient efforts to tackle the issue.

Al Assoomy, who heads the investigative committee as well as the council’s Public Utilities and Environment Committee, criticised the shortage of inspectors tasked by the authorities to monitor the labour market.

He claimed that “there are 64 inspectors to oversee over half a million foreign workers” while comparing the Bahraini procedures to Kuwait which he said has 800 inspectors.

Al Assoomy added that the lack of an official authority tackling the Free Visa employment issue and nonexistence of a hotline to receive complaints related to the matter are some of the problems that require immediate solutions in Bahraini.

Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan was present at the discussion to answer MPs’ questions.

In his reply to Al Assoomy,

the minister confirmed that “the ministry has increased the numbers of inspectors in 2017 to 75 inspectors”, adding that “35, 000 inspection campaigns were conducted last year”.

Humaidan rejected MPs’ accusations of the lack of coordination between the different official authorities to tackle the issue, affirming that “a strategy is followed as per the directives of the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister HRH

Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa to coordinate between the different authorities to eradicate the irregular employment phenomenon” and that this includes Interior, Foreign Affairs, Labour and Social Development, Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministries and other official authorities.

“HRH the Crown Prince has directed to eradicate the causes that benefit citizens from irregular employment. As a result, several procedures

were implemented, including the Flexible Work permits,” the minister added.

As reported earlier, the Flexible Work Permits were launched last July and allow certain categories of illegal workers, who meet conditions, to work and reside in Bahrain without the need of an employer.

The lawmakers passed the report by the end of the session and called to adopt its recommendations to end this phenomenon.

Avery addressed the entrepreneur community on how to grow their business and helped the audience learn and master the art of communication, the art of strategic storytelling, emphasising on the importance of strategic leadership.

EO Bahrain Chapter president Suhail Al Gosaibi told DT News, “EO is a global organisation with the Bahrain chapter being since 2004.

The EO Bahrain chapter has approximately 42 members with the Median Sales totalling up to $2 million. We have a learning event every month, where we try and bring experts to come and address to the chapter to help the entrepreneurs develop themselves and become better and stronger entrepreneurs which will ultimately contribute to the society and to the Kingdom’s economy.”

“It was a delight hosting Ryan Avery as he is a renowned speaker on relationships, communication and on leadership and he spoke to us on how to be the leader instead of being a leader. We had a great takeaway from his talk and there is a lot that the entrepreneurs can learn and implement from his talk.”

Finse (Norway)

Inside a giant igloo in a snowy Norwegian village, the sound of a

horn rings out, warming the mood of a freezing audience, huddled together in -24 Celsius.

But the four musicians performing are even colder: the instruments they are playing are all made of ice.

The xylophone, claves and wind instruments have been painstakingly carved from ice blocks extracted from a frozen lake, and are now part of a finger-numbing performance at the 13th Ice Music Festival in the mountain village of Finse.

The problem is, the longer the musicians play, the more the instruments start to disintegrate.

It is not an easy task “to perform on instruments that are melting while you play them,” says percussionist Terje Isungset, also the founder of the festival.

Wearing thick wool gloves, he blows warm air into his ice-sculpted horn, illuminated under blue and turquoise lights.

Next to him, a singer with an angelic voice covers her mouth with a scarf to stay warm, while a bass player removes his gloves so he can pull the strings on his ice-made instrument.

‘Art and madness’ The setting of the festival, 195

kilometres (121 miles) west of Oslo, is not for anyone sensitive to a shivering climate.

Held between February 2 and 3 inside an igloo built solely of ice, dozens of people wearing clothing fit to survive freezing mountain weather sit on snow benches while cheering and wrapping their arms around each other.

As the night grows older, a band member blows into a long ice wind instrument shaped like an Australian didgeridoo, vibrating across the venue.

“It’s a fine line between art and madness,” Emile Holba, a UK-based photographer and crew member, tells as he bursts into laughter.

“Things can go wrong, instruments can break...the audience likes the purity of it,” he adds.

The festival has previously been held in Geilo, a ski resort in the central mountain region of Norway.

But organisers say the weather there has become milder, making it difficult to build ice venues and harder to prevent the instruments from melting.

“This winter... the ice was really slushy and difficult to deal with,” Isungset said.

“It’s the first time I have seen ice like this.”

Something out of ‘nearly nothing’ In search of guaranteed freezing

temperatures, the festival moved further west to Finse, a 30 minute train ride from Geilo.

Surrounded by mountains framing a glacier, the area was used to create the snow planet “Hoth” in the opening scene of Star War’s movie “The Empire Strikes Back”.

The village was also the base for Antarctic expedition training by British explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) and his Norwegian counterpart Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930).

“It’s kind of otherworldly...there is magic there,” says Holba.

Preparing the festival is no simple task.

It took organisers a week to build the igloo and the ice needed to be sourced and collected by a crew of more than 20 people.

Large chunks were removed from a nearby lake and the musicians used chainsaws, hammers and chisels to carefully sculpt the instruments.

“It’s just music....and trying to create something out of nearly nothing,” Isungset said.

After the festival, some of the instruments do become nearly nothing again, the ice dripping away back into the earth.

But a few of the ice-creations do survive.

If deemed to be in good enough shape, the instruments are stored inside a freezer, waiting in frozen isolation, to be used again the following year. (AFP)

The festival has previously been held in Geilo, a ski resort in the central mountain region of Norway.

But organisers say the weather there has become milder, making it difficult to build ice venues and harder to prevent the instruments from melting.

“This winter... the ice was really slushy and difficult to deal with,” Isungset said.

“It’s the first time I have seen ice like this.”

Something out of ‘nearly nothing’ In search of guaranteed freezing

temperatures, the festival moved further west to Finse, a 30 minute train ride from Geilo.

Surrounded by mountains framing a glacier, the area was used to create the snow planet “Hoth” in the opening scene of Star War’s movie “The Empire Strikes Back”.

The village was also the base for Antarctic expedition training by British explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) and his Norwegian counterpart Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930).

“It’s kind of otherworldly...there is magic there,” says Holba.

Preparing the festival is no simple task.

It took organisers a week to build the igloo and the ice needed to be sourced and collected by a crew of more than 20 people.

Large chunks were removed from a nearby lake and the musicians used chainsaws, hammers and chisels to carefully sculpt the instruments.

“It’s just music....and trying to create something out of nearly nothing,” Isungset said.

After the festival, some of the instruments do become nearly nothing again, the ice dripping away back into the earth.

But a few of the ice-creations do survive.

If deemed to be in good enough shape, the instruments are stored inside a freezer, waiting in frozen isolation, to be used again the following year. (AFP)

World stock markets nosedived for a fourth

day running yesterday, having seen nerves about higher interest rates and overcooked valuations wipe $4 trillion off what just eight days ago had been record highs.

Europe’s main bourses were down around 2.5 percent and Wall Street futures pointed to more losses too as “fear gauges” of market volatility leapt to their highest level since a surprise devaluation of China’s currency in 2015.

The flashing warning signs left investors with little option but to seek traditional refuges such as gold and the dollar. Benchmark government bonds -- ironically one of the initial triggers for the selloff -- also gained.

Commodities remained gloomy too, with oil and industrial metals all tumbling backwards as the year’s stellar start for risk assets rapidly soured.

“Playtime is officially over, kids,” analysts at Rabobank said. “Rising volatility painfully reminds some investors that one-way bets don’t exist.”

The equity market selloff had been viewed by some as a healthy correction after a rapid run up over the last year, but as it snowballed through Asia and Europe and looked to be on its way back to Wall Street, nerves were starting to fray.

Europe’s drop sent the region’s STOXX 600 to its lowest level in six months while the losses for MSCI’s widely tracked 47-country world index broke $4 trillion

as its drop since Friday neared 8 percent.

Wall Street’s Dow Jones and S&P 500 benchmarks had slumped 4.6 percent and 4.1 percent on Monday, their biggest drops since August 2011. It was also the Dow’s biggest fall on a pure points basis of all-time and put it in the red for 2018.

There was intense trading activity, with the average daily volume on Europe’s blue-chip STOXX 50 already easily surpassed by the middle of the session.

The euro STOXX volatility index, Europe’s main gauge of market anxiety, saw its biggest spike since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. The better known Wall Street VIX, screamed above the 50 mark.

“This is not the end of the bull market, but it is the end of the super low volatility regime,” said David Lafferty, Chief Market Strategist at Natixis Investment Managers.

“The last two days of trading has thrown a giant bucket of cold water on the short volatility trade and I think we’re now in for prolonged period of elevated volatility generally.”

GOLDILOCKS VS THE BEARS“Since last autumn,

investors had been betting on the ‘Goldilocks’ economy -- solid economic expansion, improving corporate earnings and stable inflation. But the tide seems to have changed,” said Norihiro Fujito, senior investment strategist at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities.

MSCI’s broadest index of

Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slid 3.4 percent overnight.

Taiwan’s main index lost 5.0 percent, its biggest slump since 2011, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 4.2 percent and Japan’s Nikkei dived 4.7 percent, its worst fall since November 2016, to four-month lows.

The original trigger for the sell-off was a sharp rise in U.S. bond yields late last week after data showed U.S. wages increasing at the fastest pace since 2009. That raised the alarm about higher inflation and, with it, potentially higher interest rates.

That could be painful for markets that have been propped up by central banks’ stimulus for many years.

The 10-year U.S. Treasuries yield rose to as high as 2.885 percent on Monday, its highest in four years.

But the massive fall in share prices prompted an about-turn, which sent it back to as low as 2.662 percent. German Bunds, Europe’s benchmark, saw yields fall 6 basis points, their biggest drop in over two months.

“Ten-year treasuries at four-year highs -- does this herald the start of a bond bear market? Or are we simply returning to a more ‘normal’ cycle of higher yields and higher interest rates?” said Graham Bishop, Investment Director at Heartwood Investment Management.

REDUCING RISKThe CBOE Volatility index,

the closely followed measure of expected near-term U.S. stock market volatility,

jumped over 30 points to 50, its highest level since August 2015.

That left some popular exchange-traded products that investors use to benefit from calm market conditions facing potential liquidation.

Keen to avoid further risk, investors were closing their positions in other assets, including FX markets, where a popular trade has been to sell the dollar against the euro and other currencies seen as benefiting from higher future interest rates.

The euro had been clawing back ground but was suddenly swiped back to $1.2353 as U.S. traders began to buy up the dollar.

That left the euro not far from last week’s low of $1.2335, a break of which could usher in a further correction after its rally to a three-year high of $1.2538 by late last month.

Oil prices continued to droop too, with international benchmark Brent hitting a one-month low, before leveling off at $66.90 per barrel, down 1

percent on the day.U.S. crude futures were

trading down 1.3 percent at $63.33 per barrel, while gold nudged up for a fourth day in the last five, to $1,340 per ounce.

“I think this is a healthy, albeit rather vicious correction (in equity markets) and we may see more over the next week, but on the whole I really wouldn’t panic,” said broker Marex Spectron’s head of precious metals, David Govett.

“As such, I don’t think gold will go a lot higher.” (Reuters)

Bitcoin briefly slid below $6,000 yesterday to its

lowest point so far this year in a sell-off that has seen the cryptocurrency lose more than half its value.

The virtual currency hit a peak of almost $20,000 in December, receding to around $13,800 at the start of the new year.

On the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange, bitcoin

fell to as low as $5,920, its weakest since mid-November, before recovering back above $6,000 BTC=BTSP. It was trading at $6,860 by 1315 GMT, almost flat on the day.

Other cryptocurrencies have also dropped sharply in value this week. Ethereum, the second-largest by market value, is down almost 11 percent over the past 24 hours, while the third-largest, Ripple, is down 7 percent, according to

trade website Coinmarketcap.com. Bitcoin is down more than 10 percent in that period.

After a massive run-up in prices last year, in which investors across the world piled into the market, cryptocurrency prices have skidded lower this year at the same time as regulators have stepped up warnings about the risk of investing in them.

Saudi working with JPMorgan, HSBC, MUFG on $10 billion loan refinancing

Saudi Arabia is working with HSBC, JPMorgan

and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group on the refinancing of its existing $10 billion syndicated loan, said banking sources familiar with the matter.

The three lenders have a leading role in the refinancing, which will involve a much larger group of banks. Loan syndication is expected to be completed by mid-February, said the sources.

A spokesman for the Saudi debt management office said: “The DMO is coordinating this transaction directly with all financial institutions and it would be inappropriate to comment further whilst discussions are still ongoing.”

HSBC declined to comment, while JPMorgan and MUFG did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Saudi Arabia approached banks last month with requests for proposals to refinance its $10 billion loan, and also for further U.S. dollar-denominated bond issuance and potential financing backed by foreign export credit agencies.

The loan refinancing will include a repricing of the debt facility and a maturity extension, to 2023 from 2021. It will include an Islamic finance tranche using a murabaha structure, according to a DMO statement last month.

Other banks potentially participating in the loan deal will likely include European, American and Japanese banks, said the sources. (Reuters)

The Philippines signed a deal with Canada yesterday to buy

16 combat utility helicopters worth $233.36 million, as the military prepared to step up operations against Islamist and communist rebels.

The Bell 412EPI helicopters will be delivered early next year as President Rodrigo Duterte re-focuses the armed forces modernization program to tackle growing domestic threats as Maoist fighters and pro-Islamic State extremists try to regroup.

“The helicopters will be used for the military’s internal security operations,” Major-General Restituto Padilla, military chief of plans, told Reuters, adding the aircraft could also be used for search-and-rescue and disaster relief operations.

The helicopters would replace the second-hand Vietnam War-era UH-1H Huey rotary aircraft, the workhorse of the Philippine Air

Force. The Philippines acquired those from the United States.

Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana signed the negotiated government contract with the Canadian Commercial Corporation, which was licensed to sell the American military aircraft.

It was the second time the Philippines has acquired Bell helicopters. In 2014, it bought eight lower variant of the aircraft for 4.8 billion pesos.

The Philippines is spending 125 billion pesos for the next five years to modernize its armed forces, but putting priority on equipment and armaments for internal security operations to defeat domestic threats as well protect its maritime borders.

It is also acquiring three frigates from South Korea, air defense radars from Israel, armored vehicles, a long-range patrol aircraft and assault rifles and grenade launchers from Russia.

Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the operator and managing body of Bahrain International Airport (BIA), held its first labour discussions of the year with the BAC Labour Union. The meeting was presided over by BAC Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah. The BAC Labour Union reports to the Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation, which was formed following Royal Decree number (33) of 2002 regarding trade union representation.

Middle Eastern stock markets fell yesterday

because of the global downturn in equities, but the region outperformed emerging markets in Asia, where MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares ex-Japan plunged 3.6 per cent.

Researchers in Japan and Australia say they have made

important progress in developing a blood test that could in future help doctors detect who might go on to get Alzheimer’s disease. In a study published in the journal Nature, the scientists said the test, which can detect a toxic protein known as amyloid beta, linked to Alzheimer‘s, was more than 90 percent accurate in research involving around 370 people. Disputing popular claims that meditation can change how people behave towards others and make them more

compassionate, new research suggests this is not the case.

Meditation plays no significant role in reducing aggression or prejudice or improving how socially-connected someone is, said the study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

“The popularisation of meditation techniques, like mindfulness, despite being taught without religious beliefs, still seem to offer the hope of a better self and a better world to many,” said Miguel Farias from Coventry University in England.

“We wanted to investigate how powerful these techniques were in affecting one’s feelings and behaviours towards others,” Farias said.

The researchers reviewed more than

20 studies that investigated the effect of various types of meditation, such as mindfulness and loving-kindness, on pro-social feelings and behaviours.

Initial analysis indicated that meditation did have an overall positive impact.

The researchers said meditation made people feel moderately more compassionate or empathic, compared to if they had done no other new emotionally-engaging activity.

However, further analysis revealed that meditation actually played no significant role in reducing aggression or improving how socially-connected someone was.

The most unexpected result of this study was that the more positive results found for compassion had important methodological flaws -- compassion levels in some studies only increased if the meditation teacher was also an

author of the published report.Overall, these results suggest that the

moderate improvements reported by psychologists in previous studies may be the result of methodological weaknesses and biases, said the researchers.

Their research only included studies where meditators were compared to other individuals that did not meditate.

All these studies used meditation techniques derived from Buddhism, such as mindfulness and loving-kindness meditation, but not other related activities, like yoga or Tai-Chi

“None of this, of course, invalidates Buddhism or other religions’ claims about the moral value and eventually life changing potential of its beliefs and practices.

But our research findings are a far cry from many popular claims made by meditators and some psychologists,” Farias said. (IANS)

Babies with ‘normal’ heads may have Zika brain damage

Babies infected with Zika virus may suffer severe brain damage even if they do not display the signature

symptom of an unusually small head, a study in monkeys suggested.

This meant that brain-damaged children may be walking around undiagnosed and missing out on life-bettering therapy, scientists reported in the science journal Nature Medicine.

“Current criteria using head size to diagnose Zika-related brain injury fail to capture more subtle brain damage that can lead to significant learning problems and mental health disorders later in life,” said the study’s lead author Kristina Waldorf of the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle.

“We are diagnosing only the tip of the iceberg,” she said in a statement.

Waldorf and a team analysed the brains of five growing macaque foetuses whose mothers they infected with Zika virus.

Macaques are considered a close animal model for human pregnancy.

Only one of the monkey foetuses displayed physical abnormalities early on, but later MRI scans revealed that the brains of four of the five were not developing as they should.

the lining of the stomach. It is common in companion cats. Gastritis in cats is most often caused by eating spoiled meats

or from food allergies, or if they are exposed to certain types of bacteria, virus or parasites, or the cats with weakened immune systems. Gastritis can affect cats of all breeds and all ages.

Gastritis can cause a number of gastrointestinal signs in cats, the most common of which are vomiting, intense abdominal pain and lack of appetite, sometimes increased water intake, weakness and lethargy.

In some instances, further testing is required, including abdominal ultrasound, radiographs or even an endoscopic examination under anesthesia to look closely at the interior of the stomach.

Some home care measures includes withholding food for 24 to 48 hours, offering small amounts of water frequently during the first 24 hours, If fluids cannot be given orally without

inducing vomiting, seek immediate veterinary treatment. If there is no vomiting for 24 hours, feed a small amount of a highly-digestible, low-fat food, resume the normal feeding with small meals given frequently (usually about ½ of the normal daily amount of food, divided into 4-6 meals), gradually increase the amount of food over the next two to three days. If vomiting returns immediately seek veterinary help.

Medical treatment for cats with gastritis may include intravenous fluid administration, gastrointestinal protectants, anti-vomiting medications and supportive treatments.

It is important that you follow your veterinarian’s recommendations regarding diet and hydration for your cat. Avoid any foods that cause stomach irritation or allergic response in your cat. In addition, do not let your pet roam freely, as it may eat whatever it wants to eat.

The Eiffel Tower turned away tourists yesterday

as snow swept across northern France, snarling trains and giving the capital its first real dose of wintry weather this season.

The Meteo France weather service put the greater Paris region on alert for snow and black ice on roads, among 36 departments on alert across the country.

Snow had already dusted Paris on Monday before quickly melting away,

though more has settled in its suburbs.

But Meteo France says the snowfall will intensify Wednesday evening, leaving three to 10 centimetres (one to four inches) in most areas on alert -- conditions that could cause headaches for commuters.

“This will be the first blast of winter, late but the real thing, with cold air from Scandinavia colliding with a perturbation coming up from the south,” said forecaster Sebastien Leas. (AFP)

Hundreds of soldiers have been drafted in to

guard Pyeongchang Olympic venues after 1,200 security staff were withdrawn over an outbreak of a severe stomach virus, organisers said yesterday.

Nine hundred military personnel were on duty after 41 security guards were hospitalised with norovirus following the sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhoea on Sunday.

Officials said they were

unaware of the source of the virus, which is highly contagious and can also be spread through food or water contamination.

The 41 who fell ill on Sunday were transferred to hospital and most were diagnosed with a norovirus infection.

“The 1,200-odd people were pulled out from their duties,” an official of the Pyeongchang Olympic Organizing Committee told AFP. (AFP)

Two teams of scientists on Monday unveiled a “missing-link” species of

spider with a scorpion-like tail found perfectly preserved in amber in Southeast Asia’s forests after at least 100 million years.

In studies published side-by-side in Nature Ecology and Evolution, one team argued that male sex organs and silk thread-producing teats link the creature to living spiders.

The other team pointed to the long tail and a segmented body to argue that Chimerarachne yingi belongs instead to a far more ancient and extinct lineage at least 380 million years old.

Either way, the researchers agree that C. yingi fills a yawning gap in the evolutionary saga of the nearly 50,000 species of spiders that spin webs and trap prey around the world today. (AFP)

North Korea is only months away from

obtaining the capability to hit U.S. territory with a nuclear weapon and must be disarmed, a U.S. envoy said yesterday, dismissing Pyonyang’s diplomatic thaw with South Korea as a “charm offensive” that fooled no one.

In a diplomatic showdown at a U.N.-sponsored Conference on Disarmament, North Korea responded by blaming Washington for escalating confrontation, saying it was deploying nuclear assets including aircraft carriers near the divided peninsula and was considering a pre-emptive strike against Pyongyang.

“North Korea has accelerated its provocative pursuit of nuclear weapons and missile capabilities, and expressed explicit threats to use nuclear weapons against the United States and its allies in the region,” U.S. disarmament ambassador Robert Wood told the Geneva forum.

“North Korean officials insist that they will not give up nuclear weapons, and North Korea may now be only months away from the capability to strike the United States with nuclear-armed ballistic missiles,” he said.

A new U.S. nuclear policy review outlined last week “reaffirms that North Korea’s illicit nuclear program must

be completely, verifiably, and irreversibly eliminated, resulting in a Korean Peninsula free of nuclear weapons,” he said.

Asked later what the basis was for the assessment that North Korea would soon be able to hit the United States with a nuclear weapon, he said he had “no new information to share”.

North Korea tested its first intercontinental ballistic missile, the Hwasong-14, twice last July. In November it tested the Hwasong-15, believed to be capable of reaching the continental United States. It is not yet believed to have the capability to mount a nuclear warhead on a ballistic missile. (Reuters)

The seven Earth-size planets of TRAPPIST-1 are all

mostly made of rock, with some having the potential to hold far more water than Earth - 250 times more than the oceans on our home planet, says a study that offers the best-yet picture of what these planets are made of.

The form that water would take on TRAPPIST-1 planets would depend on the amount of heat they receive from their star, which is a mere nine per cent as massive as our Sun.

Planets closest to the star are more likely to host water in the form of atmospheric vapour, while those farther away may have water frozen on their surfaces as ice.

TRAPPIST-1e is the rockiest

planet of them all, but still is believed to have the potential to host some liquid water, said the study published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

The findings are based on data from NASA’s Spitzer and Kepler space telescopes.

“We now know more about

TRAPPIST-1 than any other planetary system apart from our own,” said study co-author Sean Carey, Manager of the Spitzer Science Center at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California.

“The improved densities in our study dramatically refine our understanding of the nature of these mysterious worlds,” Carey said.

TRAPPIST-1 is named for the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile, which discovered two of the seven

TRAPPIST planets we know of today -- announced in February 2016.

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, in collaboration with ground-based telescopes, confirmed these planets and uncovered the other five in the system in February 2017.

In the new study, scientists led by Simon Grimm at the University of Bern in Switzerland created computer models to better simulate the planets based on all available information.

“Densities, while important clues to the planets’ compositions, do not say anything about habitability.

However, our study is an important step forward as we continue to explore whether these planets could support life,” said co-author Brice-Olivier Demory from University of Bern.

The study showed that TRAPPIST-1b, the innermost planet, is likely to have a rocky core, surrounded by an atmosphere much thicker than Earth’s. (IANS)

Bulldozers and backhoes pounded more than two dozen seized luxury

cars in the Philippines yesterday, including Porsches, Mercedes, Jaguars and Corvettes, in a dramatic demolition showcasing the no-nonsense leader’s crackdown on crime and corruption.

President Rodrigo Duterte watched as the second-hand vehicles, some valued as high as $115,000, were reduced to piles of scrap in a little over three minutes.

“Give it to the buyer of steel,” Duterte said, recalling his instruction to officials.

“They cannot have cars like that. But they can get something, make toys out of it.”

The Bureau of Customs seized $2.93 million worth of smuggled vehicles last year, part of the $866 million in seized goods, government data showed.

“It does not pay to evade taxes in the Philippines so might as well stop trying, because you will never succeed,” Duterte’s finance minister, Carlos Dominguez, told reporters before letting diggers loose on 20 slick-looking vehicles at a Manila port. A further 10 were simultaneously destroyed in ports in the southern cities of Davao and Cebu.

The government last year destroyed more than $2.5 million worth of cigarettes bearing fake tax stamps.

Duterte, known for his bloody war on drugs and disdain for criminals, has promised to usher in a “golden age of infrastructure” over six years, worth $180 billion. He has launched a comprehensive tax reform program to help fund it. (Reuters)

The Dutchman hit the front inside the final 150 meters, and while the likes of Marcel Kittel (Katusha-Alpecin), Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) and Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) failed to be in the mix, Groenewegen timed his sprint perfectly.

Groenewegen held off the challenge of Viviani – who enjoyed a strong lead-out from his new team –

and the fast finishing Cort to take the first leader’s jersey of this year’s race.

The front three finished well clear of the rest of the sprinters, with Marcel Kittel, who was making his debut in Katusha colours, banging his handlebars in frustration as he drifted over the line after a late mechanical.

Until the final 300 metres, it looked

as though both Kittel and Viviani would be in the mix, and the German was well marshalled into the sprint along with Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis).

When Groenewegen hit the front, however, he instantly put distance into his rivals.

Viviani, pinned to the barriers on the Dutchman’s right, was unable to

squeeze through the small gap but Cort almost snatched the win.

The Dane had to contest most of the sprint with a vastly reduced lead-out after several of his teammates were wiped out in a crash inside the final 10 kilometres.

The former GreenEdge rider opened his sprint on the opposite side

of the road to Groenewegen and was possibly stronger. He had to come from further back, however, and after spending so much time exposed to the wind, he was unable to draw level before the line.

“It’s great to win here because there are a lot of good sprinters,” Groenewegen said. (Cyclingnews)

British Olympic boxer Muhammad Ali has been

banned for two years after testing positive for a banned steroid, the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) said yesterday.

The 21-year-old, who competed as a flyweight at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, failed a dope test at a World Series Boxing match between Morocco Atlas Lions and British Lionhearts in Casablanca last April.

He was provisionally suspended from all international and domestic competitions last October.

AIBA said in a statement on its website that it had imposed the ban after reaching a “settlement agreement” on the case, without giving details.

GB Boxing noted the decision and said AIBA had

also expressed an opinion “that the athlete did not take the prohibited substances with the intention to cheat.”

The boxer told the BBC the length of the ban was “extreme” but he had to accept it and move on, with the aim of competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. (BBC)

The Blues, who lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth last week, were poor again at Vicarage Road and had Tiemoue Bakayoko sent off inside half an hour.

Troy Deeney scored a penalty in the closing stages of the first half but Chelsea stayed in the contest and equalised through a magnificent Eden Hazard goal.

The visitors were not level for long, however, as Daryl

Janmaat scored his own memorable effort to put Watford back in front before Gerard Deulofeu, man of the match on his home debut, and substitute Roberto Pereyra rounded off the win with breakaway goals to secure an emphatic win.

Conte had called on Chelsea’s hierarchy to “prepare a statement...to say they trust me in my work’’ ahead of the game but it was another dismal evening for the defending champions, who are now 19 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Michy Batshuayi and Diego Costa scored the goals in a

2-1 win for Chelsea here last season. That was the second game of a campaign which ended in Premier League glory for the Blues but, like those goalscorers last August, Chelsea’s hopes of retaining their crown are gone.

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman has been appointed as manager of the Netherlands.

Koeman, who has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in October, will take charge for the first time against England on 23 March.

He has signed a four-and-half-year contract up to and including the 2022 World Cup.

The 54-year-old replaces Dick Advocaat who resigned after failing to guide the Netherlands to the 2018 World Cup.

“I’m really positive about the future of the team. We have enough talent but we have to change some things, which I will talk about at a later stage,” Koeman said at a news conference.

knockout. Jordan has high expectations for Nawras to come back in his second fight since the bout is happening in his home turf before his friends and family. The initial plans by Brave Combat Federation was to provide a bout against Michael Deiga-Schek, a similarly experienced fighter who is coming off a loss.

Deiga-Scheck had to pull out of the bout due to injuries he sustained which prompted the promotion for a new opponent. Although

it appeared that Ahmed Fares had made his case to step in for Deiga-Scheck, the promotion managed to sign the first event European and 2016 IMMAF World Champion at Bantamweight category, Abdul Hussein.

The gold medalist has a record of 4 straight wins, all via stoppage with only one fight getting out of the first round. Hussein is also the first fighter of Palestinian origin to win all national, world and European amateur championships.

Asghar Ali Premier league organized by Cricket Bahrain Association (CBA). Batting first, BCC posted 186 runs. Rizwan Baig top scored with 41 runs. Qamar Saeed claimed 3 wickets for Young Boys. In reply, Young Boys could only manage 108 runs. Ali Dawood claimed 3 wickets for BCC.

Climax Zalmi A defeated Hajweri by 6 wickets in another fixture. Batting first, Hajweri scored 116 runs. Jabbar claimed 5 wickets for Climax Zalmi A. In reply, Climax Zalmi A reached target for loss of 4 wickets. Jabbar top scored with 43 runs to cap off an allround performance.

Public Security Blue defeated Lanka Lions by 3 wickets in another match. Batting first, Lanka Lions posted 107 runs. In reply, Public Security Blue chased for loss of 7 wickets. Naveed Khan top scored with 39 runs.

Fed Cup: Indonesia defeats Bahrain


Bahrain National Tennis Team suffered 3-0 loss at the hands

of Indonesia in Group D on the opening day of Fed Cup, being held at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.

The Kingdom was represented in the singles matches of the kick-off game by Safa Safar and Nazil Nader, but both have gone down in straight-set defeats against Aldila Sutjiadi and Beatrice Gumulya respectively.

Indonesia went on to win the doubles match as Maya Bseisu and Nazli Nader were defeated in straight-sets too by Deria Nur and Jessy Rompies.

With this victory, Indonesia is on top of Group D, but Pakistan is breathing hard down their neck as they also won their opening match against Sri Lanka.

In other groups, Uzbekistan made short work of Lebanon (3-0) to top Group A, but Philippines squeezed past Kyrgyzstan in a closely contested 2-1 game in Group B.

Oman was the only Arab country to register a victory on the opening day, overcoming Malaysia 2-1 in Group C. Pacific Oceania breezed past Iran 3-0 to top Group C, while Oman is in second position.

Bahrain Archery Club added another glorious moment to their

credit at the fourth edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST), being held in Sharjah.

On the fourth day, the quadrat of Maryam Al Jaber, Sara Marzooqi and Maryam Salmeen secured the archery team gold medal, beating runners-up Sharjah Ladies Club and third-placers Al Ain.

In the singles event, Sara Al Maezooqi sealed Bahrain’s double, taking home the competition’s silver medal. Sharjah’s Sumaya Al Mansoori took the gold, while Noora Haroon, also of Sharjah, completed the podium.

Bahrain chef de mission Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa was present at the awarding ceremony, as she congratulated the team on the gold medal victory.

Elsewhere, the Youth and Sports Ministry team outplayed Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah United 92-47 for their second successive victory in the basketball tournament.

The Bahrainis faced little challenge from their opponents and hit strong in all four quarters. The result put the ministry’s team ahead in the competition and will play their next match today against Kuwait Girls Club.

In volleyball, Muharraq Club suffered a 2-3 defeat to hosts Sharjah Ladies Club (19-25, 25-15, 25-19, 17-25, 13-15) in a well-battled match. It was the second straight defeat for Muharraq, who lost 1-3 to Al Wasl in the tournament opener.

The Bahrainis are now fourth in this six-team group with one point. Sharjah top the group with five points from two wins.
