Parish News

A library and media center is being set up for Corpus Christi. If you have good Catholic books and CD's you would like to donate, please drop them off in the designated boxes at each worship site. If

you would like to help with the setup and/or have questions, please email [email protected].

First Communion: We will celebrate First Communion in our parish Saturday, May 7th, at an 11:00 bilingual Mass. We continue to pray for our young parishioners as they make their final preparations for this sacrament. Mark your Calendars: On May 29th, the Corpus Christi Procession will take place to commemorate the Feast of the Body & Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi Sunday), a feast day honoring the true presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. The procession will begin after the 11:00am Mass at Queen of the Apostles worship site. Along the route, the faithful will stop to pray at a series of homes decorated for the occasion. A lunch will be provided after the completion of the procession at Holy Family social hall. THE ORDINATION BUS IS LEAVING! The Serra Club has chartered a bus for the Ordination to the Priesthood of one of our seminarians, Deacon Dan Gehler, on Friday, June 3rd at St. Ambrose in Des Moines. The bus will leave The Mall of the Bluffs parking lot at 2:30pm. Cost is $25 dollars per person with dinner on your own at the Machine Shed. For reservations, call Lois at 712-322-8212 before May 20th. Get your tickets now for the parish baseball outing Sat., June 4, Werner Park, to see the Storm Chasers play. $9 per person. Fireworks & fun for all! Call Sharon Orton, 712-309-2049, for details on how to get your tickets. We thank the Estate of Barbara Kubat for remembering her Church in her will with a bequest. This is a wonderful way for all of us to help our parish. Is Corpus Christi listed in your will?

Devotion to Mary in May

Devotion to Mary in May found its roots in the middle ages. It is believed that the origin of the Marian devotion started in Italy. In 1784 at the church of Carmillians in Ferrara, Italy, the public devotion to Mary was conducted throughout the month. It was also connected with the spring time

especially to pray for good weather and plentiful harvest. As we say, April showers bring May flowers, the devotion to Mary is considered a time of spiritual fruitfulness and joy. The devotion to Mary then began to spread to France, Germany, and Belgium and throughout the world. One of the prominent practices of May devotions to Mary is to pray the rosary daily before dinner as a family together. It is true that many vocations to the priesthood and religious life have been generated out of this simple practice of praying the rosary and growing on the strong foundation of family prayer. Unfortunately, the family prayer has been disappearing in the modern society due to media and different work schedules. It’s important to bring back this beautiful devotion to Mary, especially to continue our spiritual journey with the help of Mary to Jesus as our exemplar in Holiness. May Crowning is another way of offering our special love and devotion to Mary publically. It will take place in each of our worship sites this week. Last week, I was in Ottawa, to join the celebration of my classmate, Fr. Lukose, 25th Ordination Anniversary. He belongs to the religious congregation of Claretian Missionaries. The Claretians have a special devotion to Mary. There are names as the Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In fact, I grew up with the Claretians who are deeply rooted in the devotion to Mary.

May Mary help us to lead our lives in joy, peace and love, Fr. Tom

ServeFest: Join with other churches on May 14th for an event that brings Christians in Council Bluffs together to serve our city. The goal of ServeFest is to empower and involve as many believers as possible with one common purpose – to serve the city of Council Bluffs while sharing the love of Christ.

Participating volunteers will join together to serve our community through providing hands on, manual labor for a variety of projects at numerous locations throughout Council Bluffs. This will be an expression that will make a huge impact on our community, showing them that we as believers are united in our love for people and our desire to make Christ known.

ServeFest will take place on Saturday, May 14th, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and coincides with the beginning of “Celebrate CB” week. What better way to celebrate our city than to share the love of Jesus in service?

To join Corpus Christi parishioners in two ServeFest projects you may sign up on the parish website, www.corpuschristiparishiowa.org and click on the Sign Up Genius button to include the names, ages, and free Tee shirt sizes of you and any family members who want to volunteer. (Deadline to sign up for the free tee shirt is April 26th. They will be handed out at the event.) You may also sign up by contacting Connie Feyerherm at [email protected] or calling 712-323-7936.

Corpus Christi volunteers have the choice to join residents of Amelia House to help plant flowers in 6 raised planter boxes OR to plant a vegetable garden for Phoenix House. (Please bring gloves, hand tools, rakes, or shovels, if you have them.)

The events will both begin at 9 am at First Christian Church with Tee shirt hand out, prayer, and send-

off. Volunteers will then go to either site for planting. Afterwards, everyone will meet again at Children’s Square for hamburgers and hot dogs. Activities conclude at noon.
