Objetivos Principais da Palestra
Main Purposes of this Presentation
Qual é o objetivo do projeto? What is the objective of the Project ?
Quem somos ? Who are we ?
Que tipo de dados analisamos? What kind of data do we analyze ?
Porque TmFO é Importante ? Why is TmFO important?
O Contexto
The Context
400 millions ha of tropical production forests to be managed
for commercial harvesting
Managed (= Logged + silviculture) and disturbed tropical
forests cover larger areas than primary ones
Managed and disturbed tropical forests are the forests of the
present and of the future
Most of our knowledge on tropical forests is from studies
carried out in primary forests
No continental, nor regional network dedicated to managed
forests like for primary forests (Rainfor, CTFS)
Exploração Seletiva = Degradação ? Depende…
Selective Logging = Degradation ? It depends…
RIL = No ? Conventional = YES

• Counting on forest natural regeneration/Conta com a regeneração natural
• Focused on timber exclusively/ Focalizada na produção de madeira
• But sometines/often: No planning and high damage (50% of the stand)/ usualmente
sem planejemento e com danos muito altos
• Based on a very simple rule: the minimum diameter cutting limit/ Baseada numa regra
muito simples : o diametro minimo de corte
Exploração : Além da Madeira
Logging : Beyond Just Timber
• Logged Forests still harbor high Carbon stocks and high
biodiversity…
• The main limitation stands in the recovery rate of timber
volume
• Logged forests remain forest (Gibson et al. 2011)
Putz et al. 2012

• What are the general responses of tropical
forests to logging ? Quais são as respostas das
florestas tropicais a exploração madeireira ?
• How do those responses vary across regions
and continents ? Como estas respostas variam
nas regiões e entre os continentes ?
• What are the trade-offs between economic
and environmental values ? Quais são os
compromissos entre os beneficios economicos e
os valores ambientais?
• What is the conservation value of managed
forests ? Qual é o valor de conservação das
florestas manejadas ?
Uma Rede Pan Tropical

• 24 experimental sites, 490 Plots (921 ha)
• Annual budget of ~150.000 US Dollars (Main donor: CGIAR)
TmFO na Amazonia
TmFO in the Amazon
• 11 Experimental sites
• 5 countries
• 245 Plots (672 ha)
• 35 Control plots (164 ha, 25 %)
• Mean period of monitoring 15
years
Compartilhamento dos Dados
Data Sharing and Flow
• Raw data remain with site
leaders and institutions
• Common protocol of data
analysis
• Metadata are shared among site
leaders within the same region
• Participatory Research
favouring discussion and
knowledge sharing among
scientists
