It’s with great pride that I introduce to you Concordia’s new honorary degree recipients, conferred in spring and fall 208.

Like you, they’ve earned this important distinction from our university through their contribution to the advancement of learning and the pursuit of greater knowledge in Canada and the world.

Our new recipients join our community of more than 25,000 alumni worldwide.

There’s no better time to be part of our community. Concordia has momentum and our 9 Strategic Directions set the tone for our next-generation university. I invite you to learn how we are preparing tomorrow’s leaders by visiting our Campaign for Concordia website: concordia.ca/campaign.

“We often think that caricaturists work in isolation — that they sit alone at a drawing board searching for ideas and creating little characters. Today, the truth must come out.”

— Serge Chapleau, LLD 8

WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITYSeventeen new leaders join Concordia’s alumni

Edith Cloutier, LLD 8

A member of the Anishinabe First Nation, Edith Cloutier has been executive director of the Val d’Or Native Friendship Centre since 989. She has also spent more than 20 years as president of the Regroupement des Centres d’amitié autochtones du Québec.

Her advocacy on behalf of Val-d’Or’s Aboriginal women, who reported situations of abuse of power by police, led to widespread mobilization to counter violence against women throughout Québec.

Serge Chapleau, LLD 8

French-Canadian political cartoonist Serge Chapleau’s work has been a fixture on the pages of La Presse for more than 20 years.

He is also the creator of the iconic caricature Gérard D. Laflaque, a news anchor who debuted on the airwaves of Radio-Québec (now Télé-Québec) as a puppet in the 1980s and was reborn as a CGI character for his eponymous ICI Radio-Canada show in the 2000s.

“We need you; Canada needs you. You are so important, so go out now and be the change in Canada.”

— Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild, LLD 8

“Follow your nose, find something that interests you and then find out everything you can about it.”

— Terry Mosher, LLD 8

Terry Mosher, LLD 8

Best known by his “nom de plume” Aislin, Terry Mosher has been the Montreal Gazette’s main cartoonist since 972. Subject of a recent retrospective at Montreal’s McCord Museum, Mosher’s work has been syndicated across Canada and featured in publications such as The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine and Punch.

Mosher sat on the board of directors for the Old Brewery Mission and supports several charitable organizations in Montreal and Ottawa with annual donations of his Aislin cartoons for fund-raising purposes.

Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild, LLD 8

A former member of Parliament, Grand Chief Wilton Littlechild was the first status Indian in Alberta to earn a law degree. His advocacy on behalf of Indigenous people led him to be named as a commissioner for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission examining Canada’s Indian residential school system, of which he was a product.

Littlechild is the founder of the International Organization of Indigenous Resource Development, a United Nations non-governmental organization, as well as the North American Indigenous Games, and the World Indigenous Games.

Lorne Trottier, DSc 8, and Louise Rousselle Trottier, BA 76, DSc 8

Lorne and Louise Trottier created the Trottier Family Foundation in 2000 to support initiatives in education, science, technology, environment, and health care. Among the foundation’s most recent gifts is a contribution to help Concordia build a solar-powered bus shelter on the university’s Loyola Campus.

Lorne Trottier worked at Marconi, a radar communications systems developer before co-founding Matrox in 976. Louise Rousselle Trottier funds a student bursary in Concordia’s Faculty of Arts and Science.

Meyya Meyyappan, DSc 8

Meyya Meyyappan is the developer of the first and only nanotechnology product to be flown to outer space. In 2007, the U.S. Navy tested his nano-chemical sensor aboard a satellite and later for crew cabin air quality monitoring in the International Space Station.

Meyyappan has been a generous and tireless volunteer, educating students, professionals and the wider public through his activities, including organizing short courses on nanotechnology, sponsored by NATO.

“Things don’t always go the way you want or the way you planned — you just have to take chances.”

— Meyya Meyyappan, DSc 8

Briscoe supports several Montreal charities and organizations including the Brome Missisquoi Perkins Hospital and the Butters Foundation, which provides services for intellectually disabled and autistic people.

“Look at the rewards — both financial and personal — of owning a business. Taking that risk is the ultimate test in management. If you succeed, it is also the most satisfying.”

— Robert Briscoe BSc 67, MBA 73, LLD 8

Peter Schumann, DFA 8

Peter Schumann and his wife Elka Leigh Scott founded Bread and Puppet Theater on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in 963. The company went on to tour the world. Its banners, masks and distinctive characters, often more than six metres tall, were present at demonstrations against the Vietnam War and other protest movements.

Drawing as many as 40,000 people to its summer shows, the company is committed to community theatre as a means of political resistance.

THE VOICE OF CONCORDIA’S CONVOCATION CEREMONIES

Mezzo-soprano Colleen Bartley’s vocals have no boundaries despite her disabilities

If the opening sounds of Concordia’s convocation ceremonies seem familiar, it’s because Colleen Bartley, BFA 08, GrDip , has been singing the national anthem,

O Canada, for the past eight years.

Bartley has become the mainstay of spring and fall ceremonies, greeting soon-to-be grads with her impressive vocals. “I feel it is a great honour to be invited to sing the national anthem for the university,” says Bartley.

The Concordia alumna has been working as a professional classical singer since the age of 19. Although her talents are exceptional, Bartley has faced extra hurdles as a person with a physical disability. “Being in a wheelchair has had many challenges, one of which has been finding work as a musician,” she says.

Concordia music experienceBefore starting her classes at Concordia, Bartley reached out to Leo Bissonnette, BA 74, MA 77, PhD 06, former coordinator for the university’s Access Centre for Students

with Disabilities, and Maria-Teresa Zenteno, BA 94, who worked as an advisor at the centre for 25 years. Bartley wanted to see what could be done to make her time at the school more accessible.

“They were instrumental in ramping the music department’s Refectory Building on Loyola Campus, allowing me to attend all of my classes, which otherwise would not have been possible,” Bartley reports. “This in turn paved the way for other students with motor impairments to also be able to attend their classes.”

Bartley earned an undergraduate degree in music and graduate diploma in classical voice performance. Today, she considers it a privilege to sing the national anthem at Concordia’s convocations.

“When I sing the national anthem, I feel a great sense of pride to have the opportunity to live in Canada, one of the greatest countries in the world,” she says.
