Nelson Mandela is a hero for the people of South Africa because he gave

more than 20 years of his life to see his country, South Africa gain freedom

from Apartheid (discrimination on the basis of race). Mandela was born in

1918. Right from young age, he wanted to become a lawyer to fight for the

human rights of his people.

Mandela grew up to be a smart young man. He studied law at the universities of Fort Hare and

Johannesburg. After completing his studies, Mandela joined the African National Congress

(ANC) from 1964 to 1982, Mandela was kept as a prisoner on Robbers Island, off the coast of

Cape Town. But Mandela did not give up his mission to fight apartheid.

In 1991 Mandela became the President of A.N.C. In April 1994, he was elected the President of

South Africa. From May 1994 to June 1999, Mandela worked hard to rebuild his country. He

was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1993. Nelson Mandela has also been awarded the

Bharat Ratna by the Indian Government.
