A ‘Decision Support System’ prototype for energy use onboard ships, including trimming options, was installed, whichautomatically finds the optimum way of saving fuel. Imtech Marine was responsible for implementing the supportsystem and new architecture for the technology. Everythingmeasured on board of a ship is connected to either thenavigation system or the alarm & monitoring system.Basically these two systems form the ‘brain’ or ‘heart’ of theship. To integrate these systems in a smart way the requiredcabling was reduced with approximately 80% for this retrofit. Normally there would be at least 15 cables installed but itwas reduced to just two.

REMOTE CONNECTION

The vessel was also equipped with a remote connection tocollect data and extract it via the internet to a serveronshore. The new architecture and remote monitoring allowedall the stakeholders - from the owners to the ship managers -able to see the fuel consumption of the vessel from theiroffices ashore.

Monitoring fuel consumption has enabled the company to findpotential fuel savings of 0.8% by only optimising the ship’strim. “This is a small efficiency but makes it possible to get a return on investment in only one year!” comments Rene Nuijten.

“The project was a success and certainly showed thatretrofitting can be beneficial,” he adds. The project’s closewas marked with a “To retrofit or not to retrofit” conferenceheld on January 20th in Rotterdam, where two companies helda joint presentation.

UZAKTAN BA⁄LANTI

Gemi ayr›ca veriyi toplamak ve onu internet yoluyla karadakibir sunucuya göndermek üzere bir uzaktan ba¤lant›yla da donat›ld›. Yeni mimari ve uzaktan izleme olana¤›, gemi sahip-lerinden yöneticilerine tüm paydafllar›n geminin yak›t tüketimi-ni karadaki ofislerinden izlemelerine olanak verdi.

Yak›t tüketiminin izlenmesi flirketin yaln›zca geminin triminioptimize ederek %0.8 enerji tasarrufu elde etmesini sa¤lad›.Rene Nuijten “Bu küçük bir verimlilik ama yaln›zca bir y›ldayat›r›m›n geri dönüflünü mümkün k›l›yor” diyor ve devam ediyor: “Proje baflar›l›yd› ve kuflkusuz güçlendirmenin yararl›olabilece¤ini gösterdi.”

Projenin kapan›fl› 20 Ocak’ta Rotterdam’da düzenlenen ve ikiflirketin ortak sunum yapt›¤› “Güçlendirmek ya da Güçlendir-memek” bafll›kl› konferansla gerçeklefltirildi.

The Retrofit consortium was created by 14 partners, including ship operators, system suppliers, shipyards,engineering companies and knowledge institutes, from

seven different countries. The project was funded by theEuropean Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.

Rene Nuijten, consultant of Imtech Marine, one of theinitiators the project, explains that the research group wantedto examine the application of green technologies such as usingLNG fuel and scrubbers in an existing vessel and throughsimulation models review and benchmark them againstexisting applications. The overall results show that fuelsavings up to 5% can realistically be achieved.

A RoRo ferry built by Navantia Astillero San Fernando-Puerto Real, and owned and operated by AccionaTrasmediterranea on the Cadiz - Canary Islands route waschosen as a test case vessel. Built in 2010, the 31,000 gtferry has a diesel mechanical twin-screw controllable pitchpropeller and is designed for 26 knots, though its actualoperational speed is 19.6 knots.

OPTIMAL TRIMMING

Imtech Marine and Wartsila worked closely together duringthe project. Several different configurations for the ferry wereconsidered which included using LNG as a fuel for the twomain engines and the two generators, electric cold ironingusing an LNG generator, maximising Power Take Off on themain engines, using scrubbers to reduce SOx emissions, usingsolar panels, batteries when in the harbour, trim adjustmentand speed optimisation.

ruldu. Proje, 7. Çerçeve Program› kapsam›nda Avrupa Komis-yonu taraf›ndan finanse edildi.

Projenin öncülerinden biri olan Imtech Marine’in dan›flman›Rene Nuijten, araflt›rma grubunun LNG yak›t› ve gaz y›kamasistemleri kullanmak gibi temiz teknolojilerin mevcut gemilereuygulanmas›n› inceledi¤ini ve simülasyon modelleri kullan›pmevcut uygulamalarla karfl›laflt›rd›¤›n› ve de¤erlendirdi¤ini be-lirtti. Ayr›nt›l› sonuçlar, gerçekçi bir flekilde %5’e kadar yak›ttasarrufu sa¤lanabilece¤ini gösteriyor.

Araflt›rman›n test gemisi olarak, Navantia Astillero San Fernando-Puerto Real taraf›ndan infla edilmifl olan ve AccionaTrasmediterranea taraf›ndan Cadiz-Kanarya Adalar› rotas›ndaçal›flt›r›lan bir Ro-Ro gemisi seçilmiflti. 2010’da infla edilen31,000 gt’lik gemi, dizel mekanik çift uskurlu denetlenebilirad›ml› pervaneye sahip ve gerçek çal›flma h›z›n›n 19.6 knot olmas›na ra¤men 26 knot için tasarlanm›fl.

Imtech Marine ile Wartsila, projede oldukça yak›n bir iflbirli¤iiçinde çal›flt›. ‹ki firma, iki ana makine ve iki jeneratör için yak›t olarak LNG kullanma, bir LNG jeneratör kullanarakelektrikli so¤uk ütüleme (k›y›dan enerji), ana makinelerdeenerji çekiflini maksimize etme, SOx sal›mlar›n› azaltmak içingaz y›kama sistemleri (scrubber) kullanma, limandayken güneflenerjisi panelleri ve aküler kullanma, trim ayarlama ve h›z optimizasyonu dâhil olmak üzere feribot için çok say›da farkl›konfigürasyonlar› de¤erlendirdi.

BENEFITS OF RETROFITTING DONANIM GÜÇLEND‹RMEN‹N FAYDALARI

A wide-scale industry project ‘Retrofit’, which aimed to determine efficient methods and tools for

retrofitting existing ships with green technologies, has drawn to a close after three years.
