INSTITUTE “HISTORY OF THE TEXT AND EXEGESIS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT”
The foundation of this Institute aims to develop the longstanding tradition of text-critical research at the University of Fribourg initiated by the late Dominique Barthélemy and continued by Adrian Schenker and others. These scholars have built up an outstanding library, a large collection both of books and microfilms of biblical and other manuscripts related to text history of the Bible, and an important holding of Judeo-Arabic medieval exegesis and linguistic manuscripts in microfilm. The research is being carried out in cooperation with the preparation and the follow-up of critical editions (Biblia Hebraica Quinta, Göttingen Septuaginta) and other biblical editorial projects (La Bible d’Alexandrie, La Bible de Jérusalem en ses traditions). The Institute is also devoted to research into the history of exegesis, since the text history of the Hebrew Bible is intimately connected with the history of its Jewish and Christian transmission and interpretation.
