OUR VARIA

HEARING ASSISTANCE: If you need support and a listening device to hear better in our church, please see the musicians for a special device that you may wear in church.

LOW-GLUTEN HOSTS OR THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST: If you wish to participate in Holy Communion with a low-gluten host, or to also receive the Blood of Christ during Mass with your very own chalice, please come to the sacristy before Mass to let the priest or sacristan know and share with you the procedure.

SUGGESTIONS? Share them in the Fickel Narthex yellow suggestion box (under the prayer intention book), or by writing our ombudsman, Tom Kelley, through an email: [email protected].

VIDEOGRAPHERS NEEDED: One aspect of our evangelization efforts has been our livestream events, especially Masses. We have ten videographers who regularly rotate for our different events, including the Saturday 4:30 p.m. Mass and the Wednesday 9:00 a.m. Mass. We need additional videographers for the weekday events, such as evening concerts or workshops, held in the church. Especially, we would like to have parents and a child recruited, having our young people involved since they can manage a video game quite well, but supervised by their parent. Please contact George Peko at extension 108 or [email protected].

OUR PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE…

33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME: We are nearing an end to another liturgical year. This is the last Sunday we hear

from the Gospel of Mark, our focus for this year’s Cycle B readings. Being almost the last Scripture passage before the Passion narrative in his Gospel, Mark uses this opportunity to share with us the “signs of the times” in a parable about fig trees.

Jesus reflects on all the miracles and the disciples’ journey to Jerusalem and says, “Look at all the growth that has been going on in your life!” Yes, there will be pain, death, destruction, and other horrible things around us; it’s in this cycle of “this” that growth happens, like a fig tree blossoming anew.

We can look back now at this last liturgical year of our life and hopefully see that it was hard! With everything going on, it also gave us an opportunity to grow stronger like any nature-battled tree. May we use this week ahead to reflect on our growth in the Lord and the time we wish to look ahead to resolutions in our faith for the coming year. A new liturgical year begins Sunday, November 28.

OUR ANNUAL BANNERS: The first reading from the prophet Daniel reminds us of those souls who have gone before us in faith. This reading is sometimes chosen for a funeral Mass. We thank George Zagar and the Art & Environment Committee for putting together again this annual remembrance that is quite important to us. We appreciate all the people who

THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 14, 2021

entered into our triduum of celebrations. We apologize for the technological glitch that caused our Taizé Eucharistic Holy Hour of remembrance to not be broadcast. Through this glitch, we see how we have grown to really appreciate our videography system – a new form of evangelization and outreach of our parish to our community and the world.

OUR ANNUAL LECTOR MEETING: We appreciate that three new Lectors joined us for this annual meeting, Ruth, Anita, and John. (You may join the teams at any time to proclaim God’s word; contact Vera [[email protected]] – yes, at any time during the year!) Besides getting together, a highlight was “Lector Jeopardy.” No, Alex did not come back and join us, but we did review the different procedures for this ministry. It reminded me of the many integrated pieces to our Liturgy that we sometimes take for granted, but all fit together so well as a piece of a puzzle. Each one of us brings a gift to the Liturgy to share it and make our celebrations a true praise for God. We thank our five teams of Lectors and the (at least) five members of each team who support our proclamation. Just one of the many ministries we count on to assist us in Mass. We cannot celebrate without you. Please invite a member of your family or friend or neighbor to return to God and the celebration of the Mass. And please remember, we have hearing devices to assist you in listening a bit more in our acoustically-challenged church. Come to the piano for instructions on these easy devices which support sound management.

WELCOME OF NEW MEMBERS: The process to becoming Catholic is called currently the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. (In a few years, it will be translated more closely to the Latin words and replace the word “rite” with the word “order.”) A special liturgical ritual begins the process, the “Rite of Acceptance into the Order of the Catechumens.” Once you are a “catechumen” (from the roots of the words faith-seeker), you are in an “order” or grouping in the Church’s life. There were many official “orders” in the Church that were not “religious orders,” like the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament of Sisters of Notre Dame. We hear about them in Scripture, about the order of widows, orphans, unmarried, and the religious, etc. This first step to becoming a Catholic begins this Sunday for the following three Catechumens – first order or level of church membership: Bentley Becker, Sylvie DeJohn, and Andrew Jade Weinberg (children). Candidates, preparing for Confirmation and the Eucharist, that are previously baptized but uncatechized, either in our Catholic tradition or another Christian tradition, also sometimes join in this process. We pray for Jenna Koski who is such a candidate this year. We will see these four regularly at the 10:30 a.m. Mass for rituals that support their becoming Catholic throughout the year, especially in Lent, until they are received into the church at the Easter Vigil, Saturday, April 16, 8:30 PM. (Yes, Easter is later this year due to when the first full moon after spring occurs. Ash Wednesday is March 2.)

COLUMN PHOTO: Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, thinking up to Easter, we focus on a few local and current things coming up. We thank our Monday evening prayer group, Angels in the Bible with Gail Mastrangelo as leader, for sending this week’s photo. Reminder: send your parish group photos so that we may stay connected!

SPECIAL GREEN KNIGHT THANKS: Friday night, we had our Green Knight to Remember. I want to thank our chairs, Chris Hart and Kathy Zagar, for their hard work in organizing this event with so many obstacles. We had a very dynamic, hard-working committee, especially Darice and Mike Granito working to obtain so many articles for the auction with our Pastoral Staff. We thank so many parishioners who donated items, especially our parish ministries. What great thought went into bringing these wonderful items for donation and bidding. We also appreciate your very generous support of the Anniversary Raffle – the largest contribution to this raffle ever! (This raffle started with BINGO and has continued as an annual gift to support our school.) We will let you know the final results soon. Thank you for your dedication to our award-winning Catholic school.

THANKSGIVING EVENTS NEXT WEEK: Please plan on attending our two special services, one interfaith at Messiah Lutheran, Tuesday, November 23, 7:00 p.m. (5200 Mayfield Road, next to the auto dealer and food chain), and the other here on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 a.m. At Messiah’s service, we will take up a collection for the food pantry at MACE in Richmond Heights (the Muslim Cultural Center on Chardon Road.) Our custom here is to bring nonperishable/canned food items to our Thanksgiving Day Mass. Please bring these items up during the preparation of the gifts and altar, following the candles, bread, and wine. We will also share with you a custom of sharing bread from the Eucharistic table for your home.

GIVING TUESDAY: After Thanksgiving each year, non-profits have created special donation events to support their mission, or a special item needed for the organization. You have heard of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now Giving Tuesday is part of the fabric of our culture. Please consider supporting our #weGIVECATHOLIC, Tuesday, November 30 event for our Catholic school’s ActivPanels. We have several large challenge grants that will be unleased to finish replacing all our old technology with these new technological wonders for our Green Knights, our wonderful students. See flyer!

PREPARING FOR ADVENT: It’s time to get organized for our new liturgical year and Advent. Prepare YOUR Advent wreath and the spiritual practices for the season; we practice our theme song for Advent Christmas Time (see our YouTube Channel for details), get the decorations ready and ready ourselves for this season of hope, joy, love, and renewal (among other things). Next week, I’ll share some more details about this holy season and what we are specifically doing at SPB this year. Don’t forget all our special materials on our YouTube Channel. (We thank George Peko, Evangelization Director, for leading these efforts as always!) Let’s continue to pray for each other!

In Christ our Eucharist,

OUR AWARD-WINNING SCHOOL

SAINT PASCHAL BAYLON CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWS: We are so excited to share with you a new initiative to encourage and reward positive behavior in our Saint Paschal Baylon students in grades K-8. While focusing on the Four Cs: Civility, Courage, Character, and Compassion – all centered in Christ, SPB staff members want to catch our students doing the right thing and reward them for it. When an SPB staff member sees a student doing something that exemplifies one (or more) of the four Cs, he/she will reward the student with a Noble Knight Ticket. Names of our Noble Knights will be read during our Knights Broadcasting Network announcements once a week, parents will see what students are being recognized for because the tickets will be sent home, and students will be rewarded for receiving a ticket. At the end of each quarter, we will have a special “Knights of the Roundtable” breakfast for ticket winners, in which prizes will be raffled off. We can’t wait for our first breakfast in January! Peace, Sheila Klepcyk, Assistant PrincipalFALL OPEN HOUSE FOR PROSPECTIVE FAMILIES: We invite PROSPECTIVE FAMILIES in K-8 to join us for our Fall Open House on Thursday, November 18, 2021, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Learn about our award-winning school, meet our teachers and administrators, visit classrooms from Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, and see firsthand what makes Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic School such a special place! If you know of a family who may want to join our school community, please share the information with them. Please register at https://forms.gle/jJhb5SfDMtBjeQQT9. If you have any questions, please call the school office at 440-442-6766. We look forward to growing our Green Knight Family!

BLOOD DRIVE – NEXT WEEKEND, November 21st: The American Red Cross continues to face an Emergency Blood Shortage as hospital demands for blood outpace their collections. The holiday season is always a difficult time to maintain an adequate blood supply as fewer blood drives are held at this time of year. The pandemic intensified this problem, and we have yet to recover from it. According to one Red Cross report, current blood inventories are lower than they’ve been at this time of year in over a decade! Your help is vital in turning this problem around. Please come to O’Brien Hall next Sunday, November 21st between 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and give blood if you are able. If you have not yet made an appointment, you can do so online at www.redcrossblood.org (sponsor code: stpaschal). Walk-ins will be taken if there are open slots in the schedule, but it is best to have a reserved time. Hope to see you there!
