This weekend we celebrate “Respect Life” Sunday. The Church teaches us that: “From the moment of conception, the life of every human being is to be respected in an absolute way because man is the only creature on earth that God has ‘wished for himself ’ and the spiritual soul of each man is ‘immediately created’ by God; his whole being bears the image of the Creator. Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves ‘the creative action of God’ and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can, in any circumstance, claim for himself the right to destroy directly an innocent human being.” (Instruction on Respect for Human Life in its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation, February 22, 1987)

What does the Church teach about the Eucharist? 1369 The whole Church is united with the offering and intercession of Christ. Since he has the ministry of Peter in the Church, the Pope is associated with every celebration of the Eucharist, wherein he is named as the sign and servant of the unity of the universal Church. The bishop of the place is always responsible for the Eucharist, even when a priest presides; the bishop's name is mentioned to signify his presidency over the particular Church, in the midst of his presbyterium and with the assistance of deacons. The community intercedes also for all ministers who, for it and with it, offer the Eucharistic sacrifice: Let only that Eucharist be regarded as legitimate, which is celebrated under [the presidency of] the bishop or him to whom he has entrusted it. Through the ministry of priests the spiritual sacrifice of the faithful is completed in union with the sacrifice of Christ the only Mediator, which in the Eucharist is offered through the priests' hands in the name of the whole Church in an unbloody and sacramental manner until the Lord himself comes.

I am truly grateful to: the estate of Mr. Marion Nowak for the very generous financial

remembrance for the benefit of both SS. Simon & Jude and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parishes.

Mr. & Mrs. Edward and Jodee Novak for their very generous donation to St. Margaret of Scotland School in memory of his parents, Edward and Marie Novak

Best wishes! Father Bud Murhammer, last Pastor of St. Margaret of Scotland

parish, recently announced his retirement form active priestly ministry. Folks who wish to send him best wishes may do so at his St. Philip address: 114 Berry Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.

Father Robin Evanish has also recently retired from active priestly ministry. He will continue to reside in Carnegie and to generously assist us with weekend masses and funerals.

Each October the Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October is observed as Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we are called to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable, from the beginning of life to its end, and at every point in between. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life. Read more about Respect Life Month in our bulletin each week in October. See page 13.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM | 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9

SECOND READING | 2 TIMOTHY 1:6-8, 13-14

FIRST READING | HABAKKUK 1:2-3: 2:2-4

The word of the Lord remains forever. This is the word that has been proclaimed to you.

Beloved: I remind you, to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake;

but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | 1 PETER 1:25

How long, O LORD? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not intervene. Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord. Then the LORD answered me and said:

Write down the vision clearly upon the tablets, so that one can read it readily. For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late. The rash one has no integrity; but the just one, because of his faith, shall live.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

THE ORDER OF MASS

PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, (All bow at the following bolder words) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

GOSPEL | LUKE 17:5-10 The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. "Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'?

Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

CGS CATHOLIC PARISHES

We welcome Leo Thomas Geis into our parish family! Leo was baptized at eight weeks old by Fr. Alek. Leo’s parents are Rachel and Thomas Geis of Scott Township. For his baptism, Leo was dressed in a suit made from his grandmother’s wedding dress. The family wishes to thank the members of the Partners in Prayer ministry, as well as the many other parishioners and family members who have prayed for Rachel and Tom over the years. Praise be to God for prayers answered, and may God continue to bless the Geis family.

From left: Tom, Rachel, and Leo Geis, Fr. Alek, with Godparents, Maggie Smith and Mike Geis

Judy and Tim Castello celebrated 30 years

of marriage this past week. Congratulations!

PRESENTING YOUR CHILD FOR BAPTISM Because a child is too young to request the Sacrament of Baptism by his/her own decision, the parents take the serious responsibility for training their child in the ways of the Catholic faith when they request Baptism for their child in the church community where they are registered. The child then has the right to be nurtured in his/her faith life by that whole Catholic community through education and witness. Expectant and new parents are to attend the community of Grouping #210 Baptism Preparation class before the Baptism is scheduled. The next scheduled date for this class will be Thursday, October 17, 2019, 7 to 8:30 pm, at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church location. Please call the Office for Initiation at 412-276-1011, ext. 425 to register for this or future monthly classes.

R.C.I.A. COMMUNITY OUTREACH Candidates in this process of Christian Initiation of Adults are to be integrated into the community at every opportunity. Two weeks ago 5 of the present candidates and their team members were treated by the Knights of Columbus at their scrumptious pancake breakfast. They were quite impressed and thankful. We hope to bring the candidates into more activities of Grouping #210 as they learn what it is to be an active Catholic within the community’s many events. If your organization would like to invite the candidates into an experience or to learn of your ministry, please let the [email protected] office know. A time and date may be arranged.

SHARE YOUR JOY! If you recently got married in one of our churches, or had a child baptized, please let us share your joy! Send a photo (or two ) along with some information or story. We would love to celebrate your sacraments! Email: [email protected]

“Evangelization and the Sunday Mass” Pope Francis teaches that there are two areas that are actually intertwined as the one reality at the heart of our faith: “The Church evangelizes and is herself evangelized through the beauty of the liturgy, which is both a celebration of the task of evangelization and the source of her renewed self-giving” (The Joy of the Gospel, 24). In his vision for the Church, Archbishop Jerome Listecki of Milwaukee identifies evangelization as what we Catholics do, Catholic identity is who we are, and stewardship is how we do it. He says:

"The Sunday Mass is the preeminent place for us to encounter Jesus and grow as disciples. We experience the sacrifice of Calvary and, in response, are called to surrender our hearts and practice a life of sacrificial service. "And the Sunday Mass sends us on a mission of evangelization. The Christ we encounter is the Christ we are sent to proclaim as we embark upon the Church’s essential mission of making disciples. "We are disciples of Christ, and in the celebration of Mass, we are fed through the Eucharist, so that we may go forth to make disciples at home, at work, and in the larger community. The very heart of Catholicism is “Evangelization and the Sunday Mass”!"

Come to Mass! Grow in your understanding and appreciation of the Mass! Recognize how blessed we are that we have such a life-changing mystery as the Mass that we have the privilege of taking part in every week --- every day if we desire!

Holy Spirit, set our hearts on fire for Church, for the Mass, and for the resulting fruits of discipleship and evangelization!

THE MASS Beginning October 10, please join us in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s St. Maximilian Kolbe Room on Thursday afternoons at 1:00 for a view-and-discuss dvd program based on Bishop Robert Barron’s THE MASS. This important series will help us to understand how to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the source and summit of the Christian life – and the better we understand it, the better we can both appreciate it, and explain it to those in our lives who do not understand! Light refreshments will be served. Bring your own bag lunch. Please rsvp to 412-276-1011 ext. 421 or email: [email protected] for planning purposes.

matter whether you lost your loved one recently, or long ago. We are here for you. This week, we will gather in the former school building from 7:00 to

8:30. The remaining sessions will be in the SSJ Church Hall. There is no charge, and all are welcome. Please call Laura at (412) 563-3189, ext. 204 to register, or just

join us on October 10.

On October 11, we celebrate the feast of Pope St. John XXIII during Respect Life Month. Let us meditate on his teaching about human dignity and ask his intercession that all of us respect the rights of the vulnerable and fulfill our obligations to love and serve others.

Any human society, if it is to be well-ordered and productive, must lay down as a foundation this principle, namely, that every human being is a person; that is, his nature is endowed with intelligence and free will. Indeed, precisely because he is a person he has

rights and obligations flowing directly and simultaneously from his very nature. – Pope Saint John XXIII in Pacem in Terris (9), 1963

CGS CATHOLIC PARISHES

In the materialistic perspective…interpersonal relations are seriously impoverished. The first to be harmed are women, children, the sick or suffering, and the elderly. The criterion of personal dignity-which demands respect, generosity, and service-is replaced by the criterion of efficiency, functionality, and usefulness: others are considered not for what they “are,” but for what they “have, do, and produce.” This is the supremacy of the strong over the weak. -Pope St. John Paul II in The Gospel of Life

Throughout the month of October, which is Respect Life Month, we will publish a weekly article in the bulletin to call our faith community to prayer for those whose lives are most vulnerable and at risk. We also will include information about outreach efforts in our communities in which our parishioners are encouraged to participate.

During this first week of Respect Life Month, let us focus our prayers and acts of sacrifice and mercy on the most innocent human beings: unborn babies. The scriptures are clear on our Creator’s love and care for human life at its earliest stages when Jeremiah is told that God knew him and had a purpose for him before he was formed in his mother’s womb (Jer 1:5). The Second Vatican Council states in Gaudium et Spes, that “God, the lord of life, has entrusted to women and men the outstanding service of watching over life and of fulfilling this in a manner worthy of human beings. Therefore from the time of conception, life is to be safeguarded with the greatest care (51).” St. Teresa of Kolkata notes that, “The first person in the world to welcome Jesus, to recognize him in the womb of his own mother, was a child: John the Baptist. It is wonderful; God chooses an unborn child to announce the coming of his redeeming Son.”

Pray this week for the unborn babies who have no voice. Pray also for women who are pregnant and frightened due to lack of spiritual, emotional, and material support or familial, cultural, or governmental pressures. During this month of the Rosary, consider offering a rosary this week for an end to abortion.

Members of our Carnegie, Greentree, and Scott Township parishes peacefully prayed and witnessed outside Planned Parenthood downtown as part of the 40 Days for Life movement on October 3. Our Knights of Columbus will be coordinating a Baby Bottle Drive beginning October 12 (see below) to benefit Human Coalition, who provide holistic, comprehensive pro-life care to women in crisis and their unborn children.

Baby Bottle

Campaign

Next weekend (October 12/13), the Knights of Columbus will be distributing empty baby bottles at the end of all Masses. Please accept a baby bottle, fill it with loose change, dollar bills, and/or checks made out to Human Coalition. Return it the next week (October 19/20). It’s simple! More importantly, it helps to save children and helps families by making ultrasound images available to women contemplating an abortion. Once a woman sees the life growing inside of her, it's rare that she will continue on that path of thinking, because her heart is changed

ST. MARGARET SCHOOL

CLASSROOM CHRONICLES Each week we will highlight the amazing things that are going on in our classrooms here at St. Margaret of Scotland School. The Sixth Grade was very excited to have met with their Kindergarten buddies a few weeks ago. They all read a story to their buddy and got to know each other. We will be doing a lot of activities together this year and they will be going to church with us on Fridays, beginning in October. Speaking of October, since it is the month of the Rosary, the Sixth Graders will be given a Rosary and learn about it and how to pray it. We will pray together in the classroom as well as with the school. The Middle-School has just finished working on their Square One Art Projects. They all did a wonderful job. Parents will be able to purchase products featuring their child’s art work. This was a big hit last year and is a great fundraiser for our school. Also, the Sixth Grade is getting ready to learn about some interesting ancient civilizations and do some neat projects relating to them.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS Each week we will spotlight one of our outstanding teachers at St. Margaret of Scotland School. Ms. Linda Gerrity. I have been a part of our St. Margaret of Scotland School family for the past 32 years as the 2nd grade teacher and am also a member of the parish. I am

a graduate of Point Park University where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood. One of my greatest joys of teaching 2nd grade is having the opportunity to prepare my students for their sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. It has been and is a blessing in my life to be able to watch my students grow in their faith and love for Christ. I enjoy volunteering my time to help and support the students and school as much as possible. In past years I have co-chaired the Parish Festival and Fish Fry. This school year I have initiated 2 after school clubs for the students - The Art Club for grades 1-5 and The SMS Helping

Hands Service Club for grades K-8 as well as a Student Council Program for our Middle School. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with friends and relaxing on my porch reading and cross stitching. I also enjoy all types of crafts.
