CONGRATULATIONS! You are a new LOVETTEER!! What exactly does that mean? You will get to define and discover that throughout your four years here at Rice and Lovett. But we can’t resist a sneak peek of what now awaits you: hilarious all nighters in the commons, too much late night food, Smash Bros, developing your ping-pong/pool skills, the glory of the President’s cup, hundreds of water balloons, and heavenly cheesy bread. So, however you may be feeling now - nervous or ex-cited or nostalgic or ready for what’s to come - just know that you now have a second home here at Lovett. This book will introduce you to Lovett and the people that will be crucial resources and support throughout your years here at Rice. We hope it will help answer some of your questions. It consists of articles written by students at Rice, mostly from Lovett, which we, your three O-Week Coordinators, compiled and made into a book. Every new student across campus will receive a college-specific O-Week book, which will be similar in structure but different in theme. As you may have noticed by the book cover, Lovett’s O-Week theme this year is O-Week: Just Can’t Wait to be a Stag. The entire book will be designed with Disney movies and Disney Channel in mind. Our generation, the millennials, grew up in the golden age of Disney movies and Disney Channel shows, and from this, we drew inspiration for the week. The theme embodies our vision for this O-Week. We believe that a successful O-Week and a cherished experience here at Lovett means developing meaningful connections with other mem-bers of the Lovett and Rice community. Our childhoods shaped us, and in sharing those memories, true friendships are made. For these reasons we chose this theme, an ode to our childhoods, so that as you step towards your futures, you have the support of a tight-knit class. Additionally, we hope that your class will reinvigorate Lovett culture with your own ideas and definition of fun. We hope that the unique experiences you bring and share with us will drive Lovett forward and continue to bring us closer to-gether as a college. As your O-Week coordinators, we have been working tirelessly for several months putting this week together. More than just an introduction to Rice, Lovett, and academic life, our vision for this week is for you to begin forming friendships and memories that will shape your time here. We hope this week will push you to try new things and figure out what your interests are and how to pursue them both in academics and in extracurriculars. As you flip through the pages, you will find Lovett puns and Disney inspired group names. You will meet and learn a little about all of our Advisors, Co-Advisors, and Affiliates, who were hand picked to be open. They are here for you not only during the week but all throughout your college experience to be friends and guides to life as a Lovetteer and a Rice Owl. We, your Coordinators, are also here as resources along with our adult team here at Lovett! The last thing we would like to impart in you is the most important part of Lovett’s culture: inclusivi-ty. Here your background, year, major, and interests do not separate or help assimilate you. They simply make you who you are. As your newfound family, Lovett will support you through your adventures here at Rice. We hope that as you transition into this new stage of your life the memories, the lessons, and the friendships from this week will stay with you and shape your time here at Rice.

About This Book:

Page 3: O-Week Book

Throughout the “People,” section, there will be photos and biographies of the upperclassmen who have volunteered their time to help you transition into Rice. They’ve all been placed in groups of 4-5, and each group has a name that puns on aspects of Lovett and/or Disney. Even our overall O-Week theme contains such a pun, with “Just Can’t Wait to be a Stag” coming from “Just Can’t Wait to be King,” from the popular Disney Movie, The Lion King. You may not understand the Lovett references yet (stag, EOL, toast, etc.), but by the end of O-Week (and hopefully this book), you’ll have a better grasp for what they mean. Hopefully you get the references to music in these group names, too. But if not? Well, we understag.

What's up with all the puns?

Page 9: O-Week Book

What To BringLight summer clothing - Houston is HOT, and you will want comfortable clothes for walking around campus outside. You may also want to bring at least a few items that you don’t mind getting messy for O-Week. Contrary to popular belief, it does get cold eventually in Houston (sometimes) so you may need a coat and warmer clothing later on in the semester!

Rainy weather accessories (umbrella, rain boots, rain jacket) - Houston has notoriously unpre-dictable weather, so you’ll want to keep an umbrella on hand for random showers in between classes! Rice is very flat, so when it rains, the water sticks around and huge, unavoidable puddles form: bring shoes you can get wet, even if rain boots aren’t your thing. Also, Belle recommends a poncho: keeps everything dry and you can be as stylish as she is!

Bedding - Bring Twin Extra-Long sheets! Other sizes will not fit your mattress! You can find good deals on entire bedding sets at Target or Wal-Mart.

Laundry Basket/Hamper/Detergent - Make sure to bring high efficiency detergent only and make sure you can carry your hamper so that trips to the laundry room aren’t too difficult.

Hanger/Closet Organizers - You may want to wait until you see your room to see if you need more organizers

Shower caddy/shelf & toiletries - Talk to the rest of your suite to see how they want to organize the bath-

Some Nicer Outfits - You’ll need to wear dressy casual clothes at least twice during O-Week!

Insurance Information and Some ID

Calling Card/Phone/Cell Phone

Extension Cords/Power Strips/Chargers - There are power strips for use while in the commons!

Laptop - The most common are PCs or Macbooks, which is a matter of personal preference. There are also comput-ers available in the Lovett basement and in Fondren library if you’d rather not bring a laptop.

Snacks - For those moments when the servery is closed and you’ve got the munchies!

Other Electronics - Non-wireless printers, TVs, DVD players, mini-fridges, microwaves, irons, coffeemakers, and water boilers are all allowed, but be sure to coordinate with your roommate/suitemates! Be aware that the basement and library have printers also, and the Lovett commons has a big-screen TV. There is also a kitchen with a refrigerator, a microwave, and kitchen supplies if you’re feeling culinary!

Nothing quite says welcome to college like a bunch of strangers running up to your car and screaming your name! While some of you might be just about peeing your pants with nerves and some of you see starting college as just another day in the scheme of life, we hope to make your irst day as exciting and comfortable as possible. After you drive in through Entrance 3 on Sunday morning, you will be directed to the lot right across from Lovett. As you park, your two Advisors from Lovett and a Co-Advi-sor from another college will head over to your car to help you with your luggage to show you where to check in and get your room keys. The next couple of hours will seem like a whirlwind! You will have until noon to move your things into your room and get situated. At noon, you will have lunch in the upper commons with the rest of the new students, their families, and the advisors. After that, it’s time to say goodbye to your family members who will have its own ori-entation to attend. You will be whisked away by your Advisors and the rest of your O-Week group, 7-8 new students who will become your Rice “family.” You will be introduced to your

O-Week group, do icebreakers to get to know your new fellow Lovetteers, have dinner, and take part in the time-honored tradition of Rice Matriculation. At the end of the night, you will shut your eyes after an exhausting but exciting day! And trust us, you will need the sleep. O-Week is going to be a fast paced, enter-taining introduction to your new life at Rice. See you soon!

HISTORY OF LOVETT

In 1957, the decision was made to create dormito-ries that encompassed all of campus life, that bond-ed students of all academic paths under one roof; to bring this idea to life, Rice created the college system. Rice’s college system began with Baker, Will Rice, Hanszen, and Wiess as all-male colleges and Jones to house women. Brown was built shortly after as another all-female college. Although the college system was perfectly good, then-president Kenneth S. Pitzer knew that something was lacking from this glorious institution. In a momentous meeting with the Board of Trustees, he uttered these fateful words: “I want you to build a new college, six stories high. It shall be surrounded with grating, to protect those who dwell within. And I want you to populate it with the finest male students on this campus. And you shall call the college Edgar Odell Lovett College, after the first president, who guided this Institute fair and true, when it was young.” Immediately, con-struction on Rice’s crown jewel began, and in 1969, Edgar Odell Lovett College opened its indestructi-ble, riot-proof doors. Lovett’s legacy quickly rose to legendary status, for at their first Central Committee meeting, the body voted to disband and spend the entire budget on beer, portable swimming pools, and blinking Christmas lights. It soon became clear

that the grating served more to protect the outside world from Lovetteers, instead of the other way around. But in 1980, Rice realized that the title of “Lovetteer” was too great to be confined to a single gender. President Norman Hackerman decreed that women from Jones College were to be exchanged with Lovett males, and Lovett became co-ed. Lat-er colleges expectedly failed to live up to Lovett’s impossibly high standards. Sid Rich did have the honor of being built in our parking lot, making it our colony and its biggest claim to fame. Martel was built as Rice’s first dormitory, and the eco-friendly twins McMurtry and Duncan were the last addition to the college system. Amidst these edifices, Lovett stood out as a beacon of awesomeness and was rewarded with Beer Bike victories, President’s Cup dynasties, an alumnus who founded Texas’s oldest craft brewery, a Nobel laureate master, and much, much more. Today, Lovett is known for its consistently awesome incoming class, its strong IM and college sports teams, parties, including the best party on campus (Getcheroxxoff), an epic mud-fight at Beer Bike, an incredibly inclusive, caring community, and much, much more. Truly, Edgar Odell Lovett College is the best college.

7

Page 13: O-Week Book

LOVETT TRADITIONSGetcheroxxoffLovett proudly hosts the first (college) public party of the fall semester! It is a privilege we’ve earned and held for DECADES. The main focus of the party is to introduce the new students to the high level at which we throw themed parties on Rice campus. Recently, Getcheroxxoff has become a paint party held in the Lovett quad, the only paint party held on campus. So get with your friends, deck out in white, and show Rice that Lovett knows how to party!

Casino Party Lovett’s Casino Party is a classy soirée, and the best party of the spring semester, during which the entire campus descends on a fully decked-out Lovett quad and commons for a night of casino games, themed activities, and a great time. The themed façade in the quad is built entirely by Lovet-teers (a great way to earn freshman service hours), and in past years façades have included a James Bond city, light de-signs using Lovett’s grating, and the Playboy Mansion (replete with Bunnies).

Rivalry with Sid Rich and Will Rice By the end of orientation, you will know why Lovett is the best college. Unfortunately, other colleges’ new students mistakenly think similarly of their own homes and are vocal about such allegiances. Some colleges tend to coexist well with Lovett. Others are a bit more...clashing. Will Rice College, located directly across the quad, and Sid Richardson Colony, located in our parking lot, are our chief rivals, for very different reasons.

Sid: The Sid Colony casts an ominous specter over the shining visage of Lovett College. Sid Richardson Colo-ny was built two years after Lovett, in OUR PARKING LOT. So, logically, Lovett claimed the new building as its rightful colony. During certain times of the year (O-Week, Beer Bike, Finals) the Sid Colonists become quite rebellious and must be put in their rightful place! Lovett crusades valiantly to restore order to the land that was once rightfully ours. Such is our rivalry with Sid. Will Rice: You learn during Tea Trike that Lovett has a rivalry of a very different kind with Will Rice. The main difference between our two colleges is how we carry

ourselves. Will Rice may seem too competitive at times with its very singular focus on athletics. At Lovett, we are a bit more relaxed. Although we also do VERY well on and off the field (Lovett has won the President’s Cup the last FOUR CONSECUTIVE YEARS), we value having fun above all else, and realize that win-

ning isn’t everything—something that Will Ricers seem to lose sight of. So get ready for Tea Trike, paint your chest, and mark your territory. Rival-ries can be a consuming part of your Rice experience, especially early on. It’s important to realize that they’re mostly just fun and games. While Sid may be obnox-ious sometimes, and Will Ricers may take themselves too seriously, they’re awesome people too. We are all part of a larger Rice community, and it is important to branch out and make friends and colleagues at every college. Plus, Sid plays some great music on Fridays.

LOVETT TRADITIONSEOL DAYLate in April, Lovett College celebrates the birthday of Edgar Odell Lovett, its namesake and Rice’s first president with an all- day outdoor festival. Join your fellow Lovetteers in celebrating another year well-spent at Lovett with tie-dye and spray-paint, giant inflatable slip and slides, and music and dancing in the lovely Houston sun, while preparing a delicious feast of crawfish for the entire college.

Second Floor SundeckLocated on Lovett’s second floor next to the staircase is a fabulous sundeck. Outfitted with reclining chairs and a table, the Sundeck is a great place to relax, tan, or social-ize. Lovett events like the Graduation Party (which you’ll be attending in a few short years!) and college nights happen on the Sundeck! Friday or Saturday nights the Lovett President hosts a pizza party on the deck. The sundeck’s location is also a bonus—located right next to second floor. Lovett’s sec-ond floor is home to some of the friendliest students at the college. They often prop their doors open and welcome impromptu company!

Commons CultureOne of the most unique aspects of Lovett College is our amazing community of “the Commons,” which are always a hub activity. During every meal, the Upper Commons is full of Lovetteers hungry for food and socialization, and even during the wee hours of the night, at least one Lovetteer is bound to be awake

and “studying.” Lower Commons includes game ta-bles, couches with a TV area, and off campus lockers. Lovetteers who spend a lot of time in the Commons (and we mean A LOT - it’s not uncommon to see a few people sleeping) are known as “Commoners”. Twice a year, Lovett celebrates our Commons with the Middle Commons Ball, in which we hold an awesome dance

party on the middle step con-necting the Lower and Upper Commons.

MusicaleThe spring talent show takes Lovetteers down to Lyle’s, the large, theatre-type venue in the Lovett Basement, to be witnesses to the talents and antics of our classmates. Previous acts have included 90s Guilty Pleasure Karaoke, choreographed gymnastics, and stand up comedy. Mu-sicale draws a large and heavily engaged crowd and ends with the Lovett seniors taking the stage to serenade

the peers whom they’re departing with a little song written a long, long time ago. Musicale memories last forever.

Cobb WallBack in the day food was shipped in from a central campus kitchen and freshmen were made to serve upperclassmen dinner before eating themselves. The infamous “Cobb” was the Lovett maître d’ and not well liked at all. A particularly rebellious Lovett freshman whose name has been forever lost to memory immor-talized Cobb by writing “Cobb Sucks” on the com-mons bathroom wall. Housing and Dining painted over the wall, and it was rewritten. Over the years H&D has attempted to cover the message, and Lovetteers have responded by reafirming how much Cobb still sucks.

LOVETT GOVERNMENT

According to Lovett legend, the first students formed a government known as the Central Committee (CC) as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Soviet Union. To form a more perfect union, our forefa-thers voted to disband the first CC meeting and to spend the entire first year’s budget on beer. For-tunately or unfortunately, we do not currently follow the example of our forefathers. Now, the Cen-tral Committee runs a lot of what goes on at Lovett, including the parking lot, the list of birthdays of the month in the commons, and making cool clothes/merchandise for Lovetteers to buy. Tuesdays at 10 pm, CC meets in the lower commons to discuss both Lovett and campus-wide issues, to make announcements, and most importantly, to eat great food. Anyone is welcome at these meetings to make comments or announcements, so please come join us and catch a glimpse of how our college keeps functioning (especially because some of you will hold positions on CC some day!) Welcome from Your PresidentMatriculating Class of 2016, On behalf of everyone here, welcome to Lovett College! I can’t stress enough how excited we are for you to become a part of our family from the moment you arrive. My name is Rahul Kothari and I’m beyond proud to serve as this year’s President of Lovett College, the best of the eleven col-leges. As a first year student, you have a unique perspective coming into Lovett and you may see something that you want to know more about or change. My goal as Pres-ident is to enable you to help create those changes to make Lovett the best it can be. While Lovett traditions will always remain strong, I’m excited to bring in new ideas that will help our college and culture evolve. I encourage all of you to reach out to me when you come across some-thing you are passionate about doing or changing, whether it is at Lovett or campus-wide, and I will do everything in my power to help you make a lasting impact here. In just a few weeks, you’ll embark on one of the greatest adventures of your life. Over the next few years you will meet people from all over the world who come from all walks of life, you will be given opportunities unmatched by any other institution, and most importantly, you will be empowered to shape your future. Your years at Rice are bound to be some of the most thrilling and challenging years yet, and the Lovett

community is here to support you every step of the way. To start that off, I asked your advisors what they wished they knew before coming into Rice and collected pieces of advice, some of which I want to share with you here: It’s okay to not have everything figured out. You earned your place at Rice and you deserve to be here. Don’t lose sight of that in times of struggle or doubt and don’t sweat

the small stuff. College is a time to make mis-takes, so don’t get hung up on them—learn from them instead. Live in the moment and don’t dwell on the past. You’ll change a lot in the next few years. The person who walks out of the Sallyport at graduation will not be the same person who walked in at matricu-lation. Keep an open mind and explore new subjects, passions, and things. Figure out what aspects of college are important to you and

find a balance between them that will keep you happy and healthy, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. There are a lot of incredibly smart and talented people at Rice. Take advantage of that and pick their brains if you get the chance to. With that, I want to welcome you once more to Rice University and especially to Lovett College. I can’t wait to see what each of you accomplish during your time here! With excitement, Rahul Kothari, Lovett President 2016-2017

Rahul's Bio: Meet Rahul Kothari: name brand, fabulous person, president. This senior Sociology major will amaze you-- not only with the number of likes his tweets he’ll probably be your friend within days of getting to know you. He cares deeply about each person he encounters; Rahul is always willing to listen if you’ve got something going on, if you need help in any way, or even if you just want to chat about your day. He’s incredibly involved in Lovett and on campus, from being one of last year’s Lovett Secretaries to graphic design for multiple clubs to working at the President’s Office (go Leebs) to barista-ing at our beloved Coffeehouse. He’s a man of many talents, from graphic design to photography to social media; the only thing he loves more than his ~aesthetic~ is Beyoncé. But beyond all that he does with his jam-packed schedule, Rahul is a solid friend. So track him down, follow him on instagram (@rahuligan), and get to know him. You’ll be glad you did.

YOUR ROOMThough Lovett rooms are by no means small, chances are you will be faced with the challenge of downsizing your life to it into it. This is especially true when you consider that it serves not only as your bedroom but your study, your living room, and sometimes your kitchen. Lovett rooms are 13’ by 15’, and contain many amenities that can all be rearranged to your liking (see below). Each of these rooms is connected to another, mirror-image room by a bathroom to create a suite of four people, or a quad. Rejoice in the private bathrooms, because not all residential colleges are lucky enough to have them.

Things Found in Your Future Room: Two beds that can be lofted at nearly any height or bunked Two large dressersTwo bookcasesTwo desks and desk chairsTwo smaller desk cabinets Two trash cans Two closets: one full length and one divided into two hori-zontal sections A fire alarm and emergency sprinkler A self-controlled air conditioning unit

Things Your Room Doesn’t Have That You May Consider Bringing: Floor/Bathroom Rugs (the floor is tiled)Couches or Futons • RefrigeratorsAdditional storage spaceAdditional lightingPictures, posters, or tapestriesA laundry basket and/or hamperDry-erase boardsBowls, plates, or silverware Another mirrorCommand strips

Bathroom: Two sinks Plenty of counterspace and a large mirror One toilet One showerA never-ending supply of toilet paper (courtesy of our wonderful maid service once a week)Four wire drawers below sink

Make sure to get in touch with your roommate before you arrive so that you don’t end up with two TVs and no fridge. At the very least, it gives you an excuse to get to know him or her better. Finally, rest assured that you will be comfortable in your room – sometimes, it just requires a little creativity.

Lee Pelton is Lovett’s SMR and will be available to help you fix any problems in your room. He can help you raise or lower your bed or be a liaison between you and

H&D. He can be contacted at [email protected].

12

Page 19: O-Week Book

FACILITIESThe Laundry Room Most importantly, the laundry room is free! None of that quarters nonsense that they have at other universities. The laundry room is located in the basement of Lovett, on the side farthest from the commons. Inside you will find 6 washers and 12 dry-ers available for your use, including laundry bins. Just make sure that you get some high-efficiency deter-gent, as all of our washers are HE only. It takes about 30 minutes for a load in the washer, and about an hour in the dryer, so don’t freak out about having to do your own laundry. We promise it’s not that hard.

The Commons and Servery When entering the Commons, you will ind your- self in the Lower Commons, complete with couches, ping pong, a pool table, and a big TV. Traverse the two steps known as the Middle Commons and you are in the Upper Commons, filled with tables and chairs con- stantly occupied by Lovetteers who are eating, study- ing, or just hanging out.Through the Upper Commons is the Seibel servery. A servery is Rice’s term for a cafe-teria, and Lovett shares its servery with Will Rice. Also located off of the commons are a study room and the Private Dining Room, or PDR, which can be reserved for events.

The Basement The Lovett basement has two entrances, located below the staircases on either side of the building. In the basement, there’s lots of fun to be had. You can watch a movie, work out in the weight room, practice in the music room, play on one of two pianos, browse or print in the computer lab, study in the Wiener Hole (a study room across from the computer lab illed with decades of leftover books from graduated Lovetteers), go to a production or get-together in Lyles, or even cook a delicious meal in the kitchen. While the basement is not the most visually appealing part of Lovett, take pride in the fact that Lovett has one of the biggest basements on campus!

13

FACILITIESParkingUnfortunately, Lovett does not have enough park-ing for all of its residents with cars to park in the small lot behind the college. In fact, roughly only 25 people (usually seniors) get parking spots located right next to Lovett. However, there is plenty of parking in West Lot or Greenbriar Lot, which any student can purchase. Additionally, students with parking permits are allowed to park in Lovett Lot on weekends, starting at Friday after 5 p.m. and continuing until Monday at 7 a.m. (be sure to move your car, or face the consequences).

The ElevatorLovett has one elevator that provides ser- vice from the basement to the fifth floor. This does make moving a little more difficult for 6th floor dwellers, but people have moved anything from couches to lat screen TVs up the Lovett stairwell. Also note that many people are going to be trying to use this elevator on Move-In day, so please be patient as you move into your new room. Each floor has its own elevator lobby, and the 3rd-5th floor lobbies have newly installed chalkboard message boards.

RecyclingEvery room at Lovett is equipped with a blue recycling bin so that you can recycle paper (that’s not waxed or food-stained), glass, plastic, cardboard, etc. Recycling at Rice is single-stream, so all general recyclables go into this one container. The cleaning staff at Lovett empties trash as needed.Additionally, you can bring aluminum cans or plastic and glass bottles from your rooms to the gigantic blue bins conveniently located in the elevator lobbies on every floor or near the stairs on 2nd and 6thf loors. There is also a set of bins in the Lower Commons, where you can recycle batteries and ink cartridges.

The Adult Team at Lovett is here to provide support, guidance, mentorship, and friendship. At your home away from home, our A-Team give us the reassurance that adults have our back as we make our own paths. Below is a description of each member of the A-Team. Over your four years at Lovett, they will become familiar faces and hopefully long lasting friends.

College Masters: Masters are the head of any residential college. The Lovett Masters, José and Mayra Onuchic, live in a house attached to the commons. The Masters have the final say in most things that go on around Lovett although most decisions are reached by consensus between them and the student governance. They are there for you if you encounter any academic, disciplinary, family, or other personal issues during your time at Lovett.

Resident Associates: Unlike at most universities, your RAs are faculty or staff members instead of students. RAs live with you in the Toaster (Lovett) and serve as adult mentors. They are eager to learn about you and to make you feel at home, so don’t hesitate to introduce yourself and use them as a resource! Lovett has two sets of RAs, and this year we are welcoming a new pair of RAs. You will learn about Lovett at the same time as they will!

Head Resident Fellows: HRFs are members of the faculty who oversee the academic side of the college. They are involved in college courses taught by Lovetteers, and are resources to Lovett students as mentors with a faculty perspective. They tend to host weekly TV show viewings in their apartment, so definitely make use of that great study break. Their daughter, Abriel, is the cutest and youngest member of Lovett. We recently celebrated her first birthday party in the quad with a pinata and everything!

College Coordinator: The College Coordinator is the secret mastermind behind all things that go on at Lovett. If you don’t know where to go or who to ask about something, chances are you should be asking our College Coordi-nator, Sharon. She is a wealth of information on Lovett past, present, and future: she’s pretty much seen it all. She’ll know all about you before you set foot at 6310 Main Street, but make sure you stop by her office on first floor to say hi. Things that can be found at Sharon’s: copy and fax machine, mail and packages, stamps, hugs and CANDY.

Check out the next couple of pages to learn about our Adult Team!

The Masters: Jose and Mayra Onuchic Our family looks forward to welcoming you to Lovett, which many people consider to be the best residen-tial college at Rice! Lovett College is a safe and inclusive community, where each student will thrive, interact and support each other in many facets of college life. We, as the Masters of Lovett College, are here to be your ad-vocates, mentors, advisors and friends. We will have the privilege of being beside you, as you grow personally and academically during your years at Rice.

About Our Family My family truly understands how exciting and chal-lenging it can be to move to a new city and a new college community. Mayra and I were born in Brazil. We first came to the United States in 1982, and settled in California. I worked on my Ph.D. in Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) while Mayra earned her Bache-lor’s degree in Human De-velopment at Pacific Oaks College. In 1986, our el-dest son, Lucas, was born while we were in Pasade-na, CA. After I completed my doctorate and Mayra earned her degree, the three of us went back to Brazil where I became a professor at the University of São Paulo (also known as USP). But we also brought something very important with us – our second son Diego was born six months after our return to Brazil!

Our Professional Backgrounds I taught at USP for several years, and in 1990 we moved permanently to the United States when I was invit-ed to join the faculty of the University of California at San Diego (or UCSD). We immersed ourselves in the Southern California lifestyle and education community. Mayra also joined the education field after becoming certified as an Elementary Teacher in California. She was hired by the San Diego Unified School District where she taught bilingual kindergarten (English and Spanish), for 19 years. Our third son, Paulo, was born just after we moved to San Diego. After 22 years at UCSD, Rice recruited me to join the faculty here in Houston. I am now starting my fifth year at Rice University. I am the co-director for the Center for Theoretical Biological Physics and professor of physics and astronomy, chemistry, and biosciences. With my busy

teaching schedule in such diverse fields, I have my Center’s offices in the BRC (BioResearch Collaborative) building, or you might also see me in Brockman Hall. Mayra joined me here in Houston, shortly after I arrived. She also works at Rice, where she is the manager of the Brasil@Rice Pro-gram, right there in Lovett Hall, with the Office of Interna-tional Students and Scholars (OISS). She enjoys working to further Rice’s goal of increased academic exchange with Brazil; and is passionate about helping new Rice students create strong academic and social experiences while they’re on campus. Our three sons are also settled here in town and are part of Houston’s diverse academic commu-nity. Lucas studies at the University of St. Thomas, Diego is a teacher at Kincaid School, and Paulo is back in San Diego pursuing his doctoral degree in Biological Sciences at The Scripps Research Institute. Of course, as they are all a bit closer to the age of most Rice students, they will also

be happy to share their experiences and opinions, if you like.

Our Culture and Hobbies As you can see, we are a truly international family who loves educa-tion and learning. We are avid travel-ers who love learning about different cultures and languages. Although we learned and excelled in English, both of course our native language is Bra-

zilian Portuguese, and we all speak Spanish as well. I also can get by with the French I picked up in graduate school. Mayra particularly enjoys the outdoors; especially after spending 22 years in San Diego. Our favorite hiking spot in Southern California is Torrey Pines State Reserve, and we are starting to explore the outdoors around Houston and the surrounding natural areas I am often looking for a good debate about science, politics, sports and current events. We love lively conversation, and sometimes I get loud and animated, but it is just all in fun. We enjoy sports, movies, music and good food. Mayra enjoys cooking, and she often finds herself cooking for students, visitors, friends, family, and for school events. Her famous home baked pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread) is already becom-ing a Lovett tradition! We truly feel that as Lovett College Masters, we can share our love for learning, and passion for life. We can’t wait for you to join us. As in the Brazilian tradition, our house is truly your house, too.

The RAs: Molly and LauraMolly SlatteryHey, Lovett! My name is Molly Slattery, and I am one of your second floor RAs! This is my 7th and last year in the position. I completed my Ph.D. in English at Rice on les-bian feminism, identity politics, and 20th century continental philoso-phy. During the day, I work as an editor and a grant writer in the Office of Proposal Development here at Rice. Outside of my academic and work commitments, I have a number of hobbies, which in-clude writing poetry, biking, and hiking 250+ mile long trails with Laura and our dog, Koda. I am always up for anything, so don’t hesitate to join me in some of my excursions to sporting events, gallery openings, or music performances. With

Laura SponaugleI’m Laura Sponaugle, and I am also one of your RAs! Like Molly, this is my 7th year. Lovett is perfect and Molly and I are stoked to be here and get to know all of you! Though I am a Houston-native, I’ve spent a good portion of my life pursuing my greatest passions, traveling around the world and meeting people of all stripes. I’ve lived in both Spain and Mexico and have also spent a great deal of time in California, working in a winery in the Napa Valley. However, my love of photography — not to mention my love for Texas and my AWESOME family — brought me back to Houston, where my activities are no less dynamic. Whether training for a marathon, trekking through the backcounty, traversing the globe,

or tackling the rigorous demands of my photography business, I welcome the opportunity to challenge my-self both physically and intellectually. So, if your sense of daring is as keen as mine — or even if you are the more introspective type who prefers coffee and conversation— please feel free to seek me out! (Also, come say “hello” to our handsome pup, Koda. He is in training but warms up quickly!)

The RAs: Geoff and Laura We are ecstatic to be Lovetteers and can’t wait to start our first year as RAs! Laura teaches a variety of FWIS courses, including Post-Apocalyptic Literature and Film, Time Travel Narratives, and The Roaring Twenties, for the Program in Writing and Communication. She earned her PhD from Rice’s English department in 2015. Geoff is a lawyer with a small litigation practice, The Singhal Law Firm, downtown. He went to UT Austin and UH Law and is a Houston native. We both love playing and watching soccer (go Liverpool and Barcelona!) and are looking forward to organizing outings to see the Dash and Dynamo play, as well as the Rice women’s soccer team. We’re also big fans of board games—you may find us in the commons playing Killer Bunnies or Settlers of Catan. Join us! And Geoff is always down for a game of chess. But beware of challenging Laura on the pool table…. We’re also music buffs—Geoff loves listening to classical music and wants to plan some outings to the Houston Symphony (they have great student discounts). Laura is a harpist, plays the keys on and off in a rock band, and regularly brings the house down at karaoke. She’s excited to meet some fellow karaoke-loving Lovetteers and is working with the RAs at Sid Rich to plan an intercollegiate karaoke battle. We’re really looking forwarding to getting to know all of the Lovet-teers! Stop by our apartment on the first floor for tea/coffee and a chat.

HRFs: Sergio and Robin Hey Lovett! We are excited to be back for our 4th year as your HRFs! We grew up in Northern California, studied in New York, and have lived all over the world from Tijuana, Mexico to Johannesburg, South Africa. Now we are excited to call Houston, Rice University, and Lovett College our home. Sergio is an Assistant Professor of Sociology who studies internal & international migra-tion, border studies, labor markets, social networks, and emotion work in Mexico and the United States. At Rice, he teaches Social Theory, Qualitative Research Methods, and Work and Occupations. Robin is the Assistant Direc-tor of the Center for Teaching Excellence and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Sociology who teaches classes on food systems, globalization, and gender in the Depart-ment of Sociology. Robin’s research focuses on food-sys-tems and alternative agricultures in the United States and Mexico as well as family separation and circular migration from Mexico to the United States. Abriel turned 1 year old in March of 2015. Currently her favorite things are walk-ing around the Lovett quad, ‘reading’ books, and chasing her cat Missy. She loves making new friends and has a reputation for being the friendliest baby you will ever meet (which may have something to do with growing up at

Lovett!). We love the diversity of food that Houston has to offer and are always trying new and interesting places to eat as well as the tried and true staples. We love to head to Hill County for road cycling and we have been active Crossfitters since 2008. At Lovett we are known for our breakfast taco excursions, weekly Pho brunch, and tequila tasting events for seniors. We encourage all Lovetteers to stop by our apartment anytime to introduce themselves and chat.

College Coordinator: Sharon O'LearyHey New Lovetteers, My name is Sharon O’Leary and I am the Lovett College Coordinator (aka: Fairy Godmother of Lovett College, I even have a magic wand). My office looks out over the Lovett Quad where I get to see students coming and going, playing volleyball, hanging out and doing tricks on the trampoline, listening to and playing music, prac-ticing dance routines, blowing up water balloons (just wait for spring). You will pass by my office on the way to anything important or fun, so stop in and get to know me. My office is a great place to start a conversation, ask a question, pick up mail and packages, mail a letter, buy a stamp, borrow office supplies, staple papers, send a fax, copy something, get something notarized, make a cup of tea, and eat candy. You will be my tenth class of new students and I am looking forward to meeting each one of you, getting to know you and getting to see who you will turn out to be. New students always surprise me. Even though I’ll see your pic-tures and read your roommate forms before I meet you I won’t know who you are, who you will become and what you will do here until you show me. Please pay attention to my emails, as I often have very important information that you won’t get anywhere else. I might not always know everything, but I am a good resource for information and can guide you where you need to go for anything you might need at Lovett, Rice and Houston. I can’t wait to welcome you “home” on August 14th.

Page 26: O-Week Book

So who exactly are these people of who keep playing up this so-called “O-Week” and apparently made this book? We are your Lovett O-Week: Just Can’t Wait to Be a Stag Coordinators! We are three Lovet-teers that were chosen by Lovett’s Adult Team and 2015 O-Week Coordinators to plan and put together your first week at Rice. We started our jobs in the spring, doing things like selecting Advisors and Affiliates, putting them together into power-teams, picking a theme, making this book, placing you with roommates and suitemates into your rooms, making O-Week groups, and basically planning all of O-Week: Just Can’t Wait to Be a Stag. We stayed on campus all summer to do this along with the 10 other colleges’ Coordinators, and we worked with them to plan the campus-wide activities that you will participate in during the week.

Whether you can’t wait to finally step foot on campus or you’re dying of nerves from the very thought of it, we’ll welcome you to Lovett with open arms on move-in day and hope you will grow to love the toaster that we call home. Whatever you encounter during your first year at Rice, we want to be there to help make it the best it can be, so never hesitate to contact us before, during, or after O-Week.

Page 27: O-Week Book

Lovetteers: meet Abril (pronounced: UH-brilllll) Maria Brugo, former above-average-debate champion, current above-average-psychologist, future above-average-lawyer-in-the-making, and, most importantly, 1/3 of your far-above-average O-Week coordinator team. Hailing from the faraway lands of Houston (ever heard of it?), Abril proudly claims creative ownership over two things: using her nostrils as O’s in snapchats, and having the slickest signature known to (wo)mankind. When not in the dungeons of Sewall Hall with her only psychology family, she can most often be found begging your parents for donations at the Telefund, studying up on getting away with murder with her good friend Connor Walsh, or checking dining.rice.edu. Above all, as long as she’s not distracted by the newest taco on the Siebel menu, there’s one thing that Abril will always be: there for you. And if there’s one thing that she can guarantee for you, it’s a forever-memorable O-Week experience. So, Lovetteers, without further ado, it is my honor to intro-duce you to your coordinator and goofball extraordinaire, Abril Brugo. Rachel Lin, McMurtry ‘18

Do you have a friend? A dear friend who makes high-pitched sounds which reach octaves unknown to mankind? A pal whose idea of a good time involves glowsticks? WELL NOW YOU DO. Congratula-tions. Meet Belle. B as in Bossy. E as in Energetic. L as in Lovable (even though she’s bossy, she has your best intentions at heart), L as in LOL. E as in still Energetic. Since you’re new friends, I’m gonna tell you a little story about Belle. So here it goes: It was a dark and stormy night. It was 2016. Belle Harris was in search for something bigger—she was searching for meaning in her life in a dark, dark time. She lost her fish. She lost her roommate. And, she’s starting to question why she even chose to become vegetarian in the first place (we still don’t understand). But then it all became clear when she found YOU. Before you, Belle spent her nights alone in the lab, counting the number of beetles that consumed one another. But now, she spends her nights thinking of you, and nothing but you. Thank you new students, for giving Belle something to live for, for giving her life new meaning. Monica, WRC ’17 and the Lost Roommate Lovett ‘16

Meet Emma Marcela Interiano, but you can just call her Marcela. Born and raised in the West U area, this Houstonian likes to keep her life within a five mile radius which makes her the go-to gal for local hangouts, restaurants, and things to do around Rice. This fiery redheaded senior may look young - her cute chubby cheeks often cause her to be mistaken for a tween - but her experience speaks otherwise. While working to complete her Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering degree, Marcela is also the Chair of Rice U-Court and, most importantly, co-captain of the Lovett powderpuff team. With roots in El Salvador, this Latina is known for making large and constant hand gestures, rolling her R’s when excited, and giving the utmost sass. But don’t be intimidated! Marcela is also one of the sweetest and most loyal people you will meet at Rice. If you ever need a loving hug or someone to talk to, this girl will always be there with empathy and sound advice. She is caring, genuine, and loves all of those around her. You are all so lucky to have her as your coordinator and future friend! Page 28: O-Week Book

Every year, Lovetteers and students from other colleges go through a competitive application pro-cess to have the privilege of calling you their new student. Advisors are really just like you, except they’ve been at Rice a bit longer than you have. and move back to Rice a week earlier than O-Week to train and prepare for your arrival. They come from all over the world, from all types of backgrounds, and with all types of interests. Advisors are there to answer absolutely any question that comes to your mind, at any time and, most importantly, to introduce you to the culture of Rice and Lovett so that you can begin to feel comfortable at your new home. When you arrive at Lovett, you will be excitedly greeted by your two Advisors from Lovett and your one Co-Ad-visor from one of the other ten colleges. This Co-Ad-visor will be able to provide valuable insight into his/her own college and Rice. Take advantage of this connection! It’s always good to meet people outside of Lovett. Your Advisors know a lot of things through experience, don’t forget that they were once in your shoes, too! So ask them about classes, professors, fun things to do in your free time, cool places to go on the weekends, great places to shop and eat around Houston, and pretty much any other thing you can think of. But make sure to remember that their advice is just that, advice. A class they might have found easy may turn out to be incredibly hard for you, so

look to other places to make sure you get an un-biased perspective. Why not ask one of the other Advisors, Affiliates, or your Coordinators? Everyone involved in O-Week wants to help you, and if your Advisors can’t help you with a particular questions, there’s bound to be someone else who can. And even though they are called O-Week Advisors, we promise they aren’t going to ditch you come the first day of classes. They will be there for you through-out the year, and even for the rest of your time at Rice, to serve as both a support system and a social connection. When O-Week ends and all the up-perclassmen start rolling back in, your advisors can introduce you to all of their friends and your fellow Lovetteers, who will also be incredibly eager to meet you. Your first year at Rice is going to be crazy and exciting, and trust us, it will fly by. But it will also be

filled with unexpect-ed quandaries like: “Where should I take that cutie who sits next to me in chemis-try out to dinner?” and “Is it a good idea

to throw this couch off of sixth floor?” Your Advisors will be there to provide the

Affiliates are Advisors that have an additional responsibility within Lovett O-Week. They have been chosen either by a campus wide organization or by us, the Lovett Coords. Affiliates are an invaluable part not only of their own O-Week group, but of O-Week in general. There are many different types of affiliates: O-Week Assistants, Peer Academic Ad-visors (PAAs), Diversity Facilitators (DFs), a Rice Health Advisor (RHA), an Athletic Affiliate, a Photographer, and a Videographer. Read about them in their bios! Their affiliate position will be in red.

O-Week Assistants are here to help the Co-ordinators by running errands for them throughout O-Week. Alex and Andrew will make sure we have everything we need for all of our activities during the week, and they wash your Lovett O-Week t-shirt every night of the week (which is a neces-sity, because the Houston heat will definitely get you sweaty!) Be sure to thank Alex Y. and Andrew when you see them around!

PAAs are your go-to resources for any ques-tion you may have when making your schedule, choosing classes, or thinking about your academic development at Rice. Lawrence, Rishi, Carolina, and Jennifer will have spent hours and hours becoming well-versed in all the academic rules and require-ments here at Rice. Even though you may not have an O-Week PAA in your O-Week group, they will be available to all new students. Additionally, we have several other year long PAAs on the Advising teams that will be here for you as academic resources.

DFs are here to ensure that new students ap-preciate and have positive, respectful interactions with their diverse group of peers at Rice. Navya and Emma will put on several workshops during O-Week which promote an appreciation for the phenomenal diversity we have on campus, and we definitely encourage you to engage and partic-

ipate during these workshops. Also, they’re trained to handle any diversity related conflict that may come up during the year, so feel free to use Na-vya and Emma as a resource during O-Week and beyond!

The RHA, Jahnavi, is a resource for wellbeing topics during O-Week. She will be available for any new student who needs someone to talk to during O-Week in a more informal setting. RHAs are trained to listen in one-on-one settings, facilitate conversa-tions between roomates or others who have a con-lict to work out, and connect students to wellbeing resources around campus.

The Athletic Affiliate, Shelly, provides support to Lovett’s new student athletes and helps ease the transition into Lovett given the added responsibilities of being a student athlete. Additionally, the Athletic Affiliate helps advisors understand the athlete per-spective and ensure they are as supportive as pos-

sible! Our Photographer and Videographer, Won hee

and Joanna, will be presevering O-Week memories for posterity. They archive O-Week events and put together a slideshow at the end of the week to cel-ebrate your first week at Rice! Pro tip: Won Hee is going to take your picture on the first day right after you move in and it’ll go on a poster in Sharon’s of-fice (see p. 33). Prepare accordingly! Check out the videos Joanna made of each of the Advising Teams! A link is provided on the Lovett O-Week website

SMR: The Student Maintenance Represen-tive (SMR) is the Lovett liaison to the Housing and Dining department (H&D). He can loft or unloft your bed, help you move your furniture around, and get you ladders for bunked beds. Be sure to get his number when you get here because he can be an enormous help.

Jacob Song Wiess '19 // MECHI // Barrington, IL

Though Christopher “Chevy” Chivetta would like you to associate him with the glamour of a Chevy Corvette with the top down on a sunny day, he’s more similar to the family style Chevy’s Tex-Mex restaurant. By that I mean that Chris takes care of everyone like they are part of his family. He’s the most dependable friend you’ll ever have, if you can get past him sprouting random music facts you never needed. He’s incredibly private about his own music, but if you’re lucky you’ll hear him taking out his Electrical Engineering frustrations on his guitar. Hailing from Saint Louis, you can often find him donning his Cardinals jersey. Occasionally, he might switch over to Mandarin when he’s been “hanging” on second floor for too long. Once a lowly member of the chain gang, Chris has risen through the ranks and will be your powder-puff coach in the fall. Though Chris might be a slight-introvert at first, he is trustworthy, loyal, caring, and phenomenal all-around, and sure to make your O-Week unforgettable. Varsha Sathappan (Hanszen ‘18)

Hailing all the way from the great city of San Antonio, Joanna Boland is ready to make your O-Week expe-rience unforgettable. Whether its extolling the virtues of Sriracha or trying to impress you with her DJ “skills”, Joanna is dead set on having a good time and making sure that you’re part of it. But don’t be fooled into thinking that she doesn’t do any work; whenever you don’t see her this Math Econ and Stat double major is probably squirreled away studying for some far off test and displaying better time management skills than the vast majority of Rice students. But most importantly of all, whether you need someone to go with to justify eating at Chipotle, or just someone to talk to for advice, Joanna is one of the nicest, down to earth, and overall great people you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. Just don’t let her give you a nickname. Ian Loya, Lovett ‘16

Little Spoon Jacob Song. Loved even as a prospie, you can find “Pete” at the REC performing some form of physical activity by lifting weights or busting a choreographed dance move! As a devoted club baseball player, he’s got a smile that will knock you out of the park. This Wiess sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering is interested in a career in Management Consulting, looking forward to solving anything but Thermodynamics problem sets in the future. Born and raised near Chicago, Illinois but a Texan at heart, this ‘Murican boy loves him some good old fashion country music. As an eligible bachelor hailing from Chi-Town, he is always down to play some Smash (as in Super Smash Bros., of course). He’s also really easy - to talk to. He shines bright not only be cause of his insanely great looks, but also because of his Christ-like image (he is heavily involved with the Christian ministry group Chi Alpha) and caring personality. Congratulations, because by knowing Jacob, your college experience has been improved tenfold, and your life will forever be positively impacted. Marcos De La Garza (Wiess ‘19) and Ashish Kulkarni (Wiess ‘19)

Misha Silva Lovett '17 // POLI + POST // Albuqurque, NMYou just lucked out. You managed to get one of the best girls at Lovett as your advisor, Misha Silva! Hailing from the great state of New Mexico, this gorgeous junior is majoring in Political Science and Policy Studies with a Business minor. She loves to craft, knits the best scarves you’ve ever seen, and can look at an empty fridge and create a filling dinner. While she’s super involved across campus, you can often find Misha vogue-ing at a concert or drinking tea and eating cheese. Along with being absolutely brilliant, Misha is one of the most accepting people I know and makes a point to be accessible to everyone. She’s always there to listen and dishes out the real talk when you need it. You are about to enter a fantastic year and there’s no one better to support you than Misha. Griffin Brandi Rakesh Shelly25

Page 33: O-Week Book

On July 13th of 1995, a plump little boy was born in the small town of Bennington, Vermont. A week later, on a stroll at Shaftsbury State Park, little Griffy spotted, far about away, a cloaked figure with a bright smile humming tunes as sweet as an angel. Baby Griffin, in his first ever act of tenacity, jumped out of his stroller and began a full sprint towards Her Fabulousness, whose voice he identified from his future favorite movie, “Mamma Mia!”. When he finally reached her, however, Griffin was disappointed to learn that this beautiful lady was not his idol, Meryl Streep, but rather a family of chipmunks hiding inside some baggy woman’s clothes. The chipmunks whisked Grif-fin away into the woods and raised him as one of their own. These chipmunks taught baby Griffin everything he knows— eloquence, a passion for political science, the tenacity to stand up for his beliefs, and most importantly, how to puff up his cheeks and use them as storage pouches. Griffin has taken these talents to Rice University, where he served as Lovett President and is currently your Student Association President. He has promised to give all Rice students a voice, and has already shown his ability to tackle complex campus issues. So on that note, feel free to approach him to talk about school politics, your favorite coffee shop, or Nicki Minaj lyrics—he usually doesn’t bite. Kenny Groszman, Hanszen ‘17

Brandi, like her Spirit Animal Beyoncé, hails from the great city of Houston. Brandi is a sophomore considering studying Material Science, but she is not all brains. As athletic as they come, Brandi plays 72 club and intramural sports, includ-ing Lovett Powderpuff and Women’s Club Frisbee, and enjoys staring at her abs. Serving as the Executive Producer of Rice’s TedX program, she is also a constant source of motivation for all and will be the best cheerleader a student could ask for. While Brandi is a bit quiet at first, she is actually a super loud, bubbly and a fiercely loyal friend who enjoys keeping secrets in her big hair. She is the absolute best friend a person could ask for and will go out of her way to provide the best advising to all of her new students. Griffin Thomas, Lovett ‘17

He’s a master of making sassy remarks, causing kitchen explosions, growing facial hair, and navigating his way around Fondren Library. But if you really get to know Rakesh (beneath the layers of sass, charred food, and whit-ening cream) then consider yourself lucky because he’s one of the most hilarious, intelligent, and down-to-earth people in the city of Houston. Whenever you’re in need of someone to talk to, laugh with, or watch Disney Channel with (High School Musical and Hannah Montana are among his favorites), Rakesh is your man. While his major is Chemical Engineering, he has a diverse range of interests which include playing pool and racquetball, watching Stephen Colbert and Brooklyn Nine-Nine while pretending to do his homework, and creating exciting food con-coctions using his vast collection of Indian spices. It may not be easy to digest his cooking, but becoming friends with this kind, loyal, and incredibly genuine person will be the easiest thing you ever do. Catie Tsai, Brown ‘19

If you open up any dictionary and look up the definition of “spunky”, you’re very likely to see Jahnavi Jagannath listed under examples. Jahnavi, who comes to Rice from Memphis, Tennessee, is the Queen of Spunk and one of the most down-to-earth Power Women you’ll have the pleasure of crossing paths with. She is proud to be a Lovetteer, as shown by her numerous involvements in Lovett as a Rice Health Advisor, Associates Coordinator, and a Beer Bike Chug Captain. On top of her roles at Lovett, she also sings a cappella with Basmati Beats, was a site leader for an Alternative Spring Break trip, and volunteers at the Rice Women’s Resource Center, all while somehow managing to also fuel an incredible obsession with Fetty Wap. On top of all of her academics and extracurriculars, Jahnavi also has an incredible ability to bring sunshine into your life. No matter the time of day, she is always willing to talk and has a caring, passionate soul that is guaranteed to brighten your day! Rahul Kothari, Lovett ‘17 and Yasmine Rahmat, Wiess ‘18

Get ready to dance to some epic bass drops as your advisor lives and breathes electronic music! When he’s not DJing pub nights or public parties across campus, DJ Masimore is always mixing up some new tunes on his computer or jamming out to the latest remixes. (I’m serious I don’t know when this kid ever does homework). He’s even DJ’d his way across Europe! Besides his love for electronic music, Josh thoroughly enjoys dragging his friends off campus to eat (he has a soft spot for French pastries) and making them roll their eyes at his terrible jokes. Aside from these two favorite activities, Josh has also been studying abroad in Germany and majoring in Cognitive Science and minoring in Business. While his DJ alter ego may seem a little inaccessible, don’t let that fool you. This guy is a total goofball, but he is always there for you when you need someone to talk to so you’re truly lucky to count him as one of your advisors! Emily Flood, Martel ‘17

On behalf of the entirety of Lovett College, Rice University, and the United States, I am proud to present to you Davis Holmes, lover of all things healthy and good in the world. Hailing from Orinda, California, a town once named the second-most friendly in all of America, Davis is the first-most friendly person you’ll find on campus. This self-proclaimed Greek-yogurt-and-granola addict can most often be found sprinting the outer loop to Tina Turner classics, though he does appreciate a good Spanish tune. Davis is living proof that energy can be natural, and an unhealthy caffeine addiction is NOT inevitable come college. When not running, Davis can be found returning a Zipcar in the nick of time, buying organic handmade soap from Whole Foods, or teaching himself Norwegian. So, Lovetteers, prepare to be welcomed with open arms by the icebreaker of all things awkward, connoisseur of all things Whole Foods, Davis T. Holmes.P.S.: Ask him about lizard people, he’ll convince you they’re real. Rachel Lin, McMurtry ’18

Tess Gabert is a sophomore pre-med majoring in Cognitive Sciences, hailing from Federal Way, the Dirty Fed (Se-attle), Washington. If you’re interested in getting to know more about Tess, you should really be asking the question, “What can’t Tess do?” Tess spent her entire junior year of high school in Germany, which by the way she went into knowing absolutely no German. Now she’s pretty much fluent (don’t be alarmed if you hear her say random words in German in a freakishly authentic German accent). Tess has a special place in heart for Mac n’cheese, Fleet-wood Mac, binge watching tv series, cucumbers, getting down on the dance floor, and the Lonely Island. Tess loves to bring the HYPE and can get any party started. Most importantly, Tess has this amazing ability to make everyone around her feel completely accepted and loved when she’s with them, perhaps due to the fact that she has the most understanding/sincere “I’m listening to you” face you’ve ever seen. If you’re lucky enough to have Tess as an advisor, you will also find yourself with a new friend, mentor, and mom (she’s a mama hen inside). Meghana Gaur, Lovett ‘19

Imagine your favorite place on earth. If you had to share that place with one person you’ve never met before, Nasim would be the perfect choice. She’s one of those rare kinds of people that make each moment even more amazing for everyone around her. Sure, she might spend the whole time talking about her one true love, Zayn Malik, or document the entire day on her world famous snapchat story vlog, but no matter how, she always finds a way to make the people around her smile. She’s deeply involved in activities around campus like Camp Kesem, and when she’s not in lab purifying cells, you can find Nasim wearing her favorite Spiderman shirt while jammin out to some classic throw-backs (her Hoodie Allen “No Interruption” impression is absolute gold) or discussing her secret spy plans of sneaking a teacup puppy into Wiess College to live with her. She’s always looking to meet new people, and I guarantee you everyone who knows her now would agree that she’s the sweetest, funniest, coolest person they’ve ever met. Ashish Kulkarni, Wiess ‘19

THE Austin Benavides. Not just a man, but a legend in his own mind. If Austin is your advisor, I welcome you to a truly enriching experience, as he is not only goofy and kind of nerdy, but he also can seem to make anything he does fun. But I must warn you, he will use many phrases that make no logical sense and have no real social implications and try to convince you they are cool but they never quite are. Austin spends most of his time enjoying the company of his multitude of bromances, most of which come from his time spent playing Ultimate Frisbee with the Rice Cloud 9 Team. When Austin is not spending his time with the bros, he is playing ping-pong, pool, tennis with friends, or working towards his desired degree in Computer Science. The way to describe Austin is basically that he is up for anything. Whether it’s rock-climbing, cycling, chess, attempting to dance, or just hanging out and watching a movie, Austin al-ways makes time for his friends. Lucky for you, you will have the privilege to meet this wonderful gentleman, and if you have him as your O-week advisor be excited, because you are in for a great ride! Nick Treuil, Lovett‘17

Chill it out take it slow, then she rocks out the show. This pre-med psychology major spends her time celebrating the best of both worlds. In the academic spectrum she’s noted for her intense study sessions of organic chemistry, but she kills it as Lovett’s Activities Rep to keep the college running. Just like Hannah Montana herself, Amy Tao is a southern girl at heart, repping the dirty D, or in Amy’s terms, “the objectively better looking cousin of Houston.” Despite her love for her hometown, she would love to explore Houston’s culture with you. Just hop in her car and she’ll drive you to your new favorite restaurant as she explains what she loves about Rice. Find her at the pool on a sunny day or taking a run around the outer loop. Yes, she loves her friends to death and will stand with them endlessly. Yes, she could show you her newest yoga moves. Yes, she absolutely loves all the fun times she did “reck-less” things like climbing Willy’s statue. But nothing stands between her and her bananas. Sometimes, she even eats with a banana in each hand. So congrats to you! Amy Tao doubles as a superstar advisor. Albert Maldonado, Lovett ‘18

As you walk through the valley of pizza and free t-shirts, also known as college, you look into the distance to find a majestic Linden riding a dolphin into the sunset. Keep your Pokeballs in your pocket, because you won’t be able to hold this wild Pre-Med type down. Opposing Frisbee players, the MCAT, and an unproductive roommate have tried to contain the beast, but none have succeeded, or survived for that matter. Legend has it that this untamed butterfly was birthed in a cocoon laced with the love of a panda bear, the niceness of a Canadian, and the compassion of someone who is compassionate in the exotic wilderness of Sugarland, Texas. As a res-idential health advisor, ping pong master, and guy who’s half decent at French, Linden is a true Renaissance man. Yet, most people know Linden primarily as a friend and a person they can always talk to. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone as willing to befriend and look out for others as the Lin Sheezy. A living legend of the toaster, Linden is the crispy flame that burns love into the bread of friendship. He is the smoke that rises above the toasty ash and elevates you to new heights. And when the fire alarm goes off, he is the soothing sprinkler that cleanses you of all of your worries. Alex Young, Lovett ‘17

Drake, Shakira, Adele. Few celebrities have achieved that super-star status that allows one to be known glob-ally by a single name. I’m proud to announce that the list has become one name longer: meet Andrew Hadad. Hadad can be found at pretty much any time in Lovett commons doing anything other than his homework. To be Hokage is his dream, and he’ll never go back on a promise, for that is his ninja way. Hadad expresses his love for Lovett College through his involvement in numerous Lovett sports as well as by serving as one of Lovett’s secretaries. His sense of humor and lighthearted nature make him an absolute joy to be around, and there are few things that he likes more than talking so feel free to stop him any time for a chat. Truly, you could not have landed a more considerate, fun-loving guy to be your advisor, and I can’t think of anyone better to welcome you to Lovett. Believe it. Max Hassell, Lovett ‘18

Looking for a wholesome mother figure? Look no further! Congratulations on getting Abby as your advisor, there is truly no one better. Basically, if you took the essence of amazingness, kindness, considerateness and fun and combined them all in one human being, you would get Abby. Abby is pre-med, loves finely brewed coffee and New Yorker cartoons, and is always up for an adventure. Abby loves all things O-Week and will be everything you could ever need her to be. She is excited to plan events like dinners at her off campus house, trips to Austin, and wine and cheese nights. She is a great listener and friend and will always be there to help you solve your problems. She hails from South Pasadena, CA and fiercely defends the reputation of her home (which is essentially LA). Never try to persuade her that any other city is better than hers, because you’ll quickly be proven wrong. Rio O’Mary, Lovett ‘16 and Bryce Deskins, Lovett ‘19

Known for her infectious laugh and love for Drake, Brielle Jackson is the most relatable person you’ll meet during your time at Rice. Whether you’re looking to talk about social justice or the latest episode of How to Get Away with Murder, Brielle will never be at a loss for words. She might even tell you a corny joke or two (ask about the RICE table!!), if she doesn’t die of laughter first. When she’s not busy with the Psychology/Pre-Med lifestyle, she’s involved in the Black Student Association and Women’s Resource Center. You can always come to this McMurtry sophomore for advice on navigating Rice and the best servery food options (but she’s a vegetarian so she might be a bit biased). Matthew Lee, a legendary man with eyebrow game of epic proportions. One might say, “Matthew, you are the best artist I ever seen.” One would be right. He’s one of the nicest guys I’ve met at Rice and I’m so lucky to have gotten his as my roommate. Matthew’s always laughing, and is excellent company to hang out with or just talk to, probably because he’s one of the happiest, most light-hearted people at Lovett. Matthew was a member of Rice’s dance team this past year, and his personality can be aptly described by numerous Yik Yaks, such as “Male dancer’s smile just brightens my day.” Actually though, he’s the best Super Smash Bros. partner I could ask for, and he won’t hesitate to destroy you upon request. He generously donates his time to Lovett as a newly appointed Official Chalkboard Rep, and I wouldn’t want anyone else next to me jamming out at 4 AM whilst making beautiful art for all of Rice to appreciate. Max Hassell, Lovett ‘18

Monika is hands down the most caring person you will meet. Despite how much work she has (which is always a lot because she’s involved in literally everything on campus), she will always be the first to bake you cookies, talk to you for hours, and simply be your friend when you need her. Because of how caring she is, she’s officially earned the #grandmastatus title in all of her friend groups. But don’t be fooled by her good looks and sweet smile! She might be the sassiest girl on campus. Her witty remarks and sassiness add to her charm, and if you ever need that clever caption, she’s the one to go to. You can always count on Monika to bump your embar-rassing pictures from middle school on Facebook, troll you at every opportunity she gets, but also be the person you can always rely on. Is this the Krusty Krab? No. THIS IS PATRICK!!!” What you’ve heard is true: the inner machinations of his mind are an enigma. And while he is not a starfish, he is pink (he has a nice pink shirt – I know, I live with him). Meet soph-omore Patrick Young, your advisor and new best friend. The youngest of 5 boys, this 6 foot tall, ¼ Asian hunk of man hails from Mamaroneck, NY, but he loves to boast that he was born in Pittsburgh. Make no mistake, Patrick is no bandwagon fan; he loves all things Steelers. Business is always “BOOMIN” when he’s snapping Antonio Brown - they’re best friends on Snapchat™. A defensive back in high school, Patrick loves all things football. Ask him anything NFL related in the last 15 years, and he get is right every time. (I don’t try to argue football with him anymore; I don’t like being wrong.) He’s even Lovett’s defending freshman male athlete of the year! He doesn’t know what he’s studying yet, but he’s good at math – so that’s something. His (our) room, formally 507 - now 113, is known for its bomb movie nights so stop by at anytime (unless he’s asleep; Patrick often takes 4 hour afternoon naps). Always down to shoot around or go on a run, Patrick is a jack-of-all-trades. He’s even good at talking, and he’s always there for a friend. So meet Patrick (Star) Young (he’s a star in my book). Alex Gardner, Lovett ‘18

Meet Emma Wu. Special talents include dancing, and listening to you talk about your life until 4 am. Emma Wu is possibly one of the most caring friends you could have, and despite her jam-packed CHBE schedule she’ll make time to be there for her friends. Soon enough you’ll be servery-hopping with Emma, and lining up for your 1 AM caffeine fix at Coffeehouse. Emma can also teach you a thing or two about busting a move, this Junior was a former Rice Dance team member, and can put everyone on the dance floor to shame. So get ready for an amazing O-Week and first year at Rice with your amazing Advisor Emma!!! Abril Brugo, Lovett ‘18 and Meghana Pannala, Lovett ’18

She is an incredibly loving person who will give her all to help you with anything you need and make sure you know you are cared for. Brett Guttstein, Lovett ‘17 and Austin Benavides, Lovett ‘17

Carolina Hatanpää will be the best Hatan-PAA you’ve ever had. Sassy and hardcore, this tea-drinking girl can al-ways be found with a crossword puzzle in hand. Well-versed in cooking, she can always whip up something unusual and creative with any of the servery options. While Carolina is originally from McLean, Virginia, she has spent some of her life living in Finland where her father is from (which could account for the fact that she can’t count American coins very well). Hit her up if you wanna learn some Finnish. Don’t worry if she squints at you when you see her; she isn’t mad, she’s just blind and often refuses to wear her glasses. Carolina keeps all of her favorite songs on a ran-domized spread sheet, but she will admit that she is a huge Taylor Swift fan. You’ll often find her running the fitness tests on the gym’s treadmills when she isn’t lounging in commons trying to tell cow jokes. All-in-all, Carolina is one of the nicest, most interesting people you’ll ever meet, so you’re lucky to have her as an Advisor. Jennifer Kroeger, Lovett ‘19

Alex Gardner is a Computational and Applied Mathematics and a Math major (yes, he’s double majoring in Math) from Tuxedo, NY. This talented and handsome man may seem loud and brash when he’s rambling about golf, the Seahawks, or whatever’s on his mind at the time, but he’s actually a kindhearted guy and a great friend. He’s approachable and always willing to help anyone with anything ranging from homework to life problems. No doubt you will grow close to Alex as you get to know him better, even if he talks a little too much, especially about Hamilton College (where he transferred from).

If you ever want someone to jam out to Hamilton or Penn Masala with you, Meghana is your girl! Hailing from just-outside-of-DC-Virginia, Meghana Pannala, or Peggy as her friends call her (definitely ask her about that), is probably one of the sweetest and funniest people you’ll have the pleasure to meet at Rice. You’ll always learn something new from a conversation with Meghana. She can tell you about current events, the corn-spiracy, or a cool new thing to do around Houston. Meghana does a little bit of everything, from tutoring refugee students to serving as a Cultural on CC to being obsessed with the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but she puts her entire heart into everything that she does. So, congrats on having one of the most amazing and passionate people at Lovett as your advisor! Vi Nguyen, Lovett ‘18

Rishi Suresh is many things. An Alabama-born, Houston-raised gentleman, Cognitive Sciences major, future “Hottest Doctors in America” winner--the list goes on. He can frequently be found raising his beautiful voice in song with Noc-turnal or Basmati Beats, two a cappella groups on campus (he’s too humble to tell you, but he’s starting his second term as President of Basmati Beats this year). And while he may not be able to give you the best geographical directions, he has academic direction covered. Rishi is a head Peer Academic Advisor at Lovett and one of the most knowledgeable people I know about academics at Rice. He’s also a great listener and known to give solid life advice, too. But Rishi is so much more than his titles. He is kind, responsible, and trustworthy with a razor-sharp mind and a genuine care for the people and communities around him. He’ll take time out of his busy schedule to make sure you understand the intricacies of the Krebs cycle then politely school you in any kind of political debate. If Rishi is one of your advisors, get ready for a phenomenal start to your Rice career. Brett Gutstein, Lovett ‘17

Hailing from small-town Indiana, Blair Darmon Boone survives on a diet of French fries, Lucky Charms, and Sponge-bob Go-Gurt. This junior Duncaroo has a problem with iPhone apps, whether it’s Candy Crush or Color Switch. If she doesn’t answer your text message, it’s most likely because she’s in the middle of a level and can’t stop. But don’t worry, as soon as she loses she’ll be available to talk about anything from the latest Rice gossip to last Sunday’s foot-ball scores. While only 5’ 5”, this avid Bengals fan plans on replacing Andy Dalton and the entire offensive team to increase their chances of winning a playoff game. While we wholeheartedly believe in her ability to accomplish such a feat, we aren’t sure if it’s because of her love of taking on opponents much larger than her or if the Bengals really are just that bad. Tackling a double major of Psychology and English, she finds the end zone when researching her friends to write their Screw-Yer-Roommate bios (she wrote more than twenty - we held a How-I-Met-Your-Mother-style intervention). She might not have any left shoes (it’s true, ask her about it), but she’s more than willing to help you start the semester off on the right foot. Meghana Gaur is reeeeally, reeeeally weird. But kind of in the most fantastic way imaginable. She’s low-key a genius. For someone who keeps to herself about her accomplishments so much, she is such a great listener. She’s 5’2’’ and barely 100 pounds, but 99% of the outfits she wears incorporate large or extra-large t-shirts. She’s hilarious, snarky and quick witted without ever being mean and she can make a room burst into laughter without batting an eye. Although a proud Texan ringing in from Austin, she prefers hip hop over country any day. Without makeup, she is probably the most beautiful person in whatever room you’re standing in. For someone who is pre-law, she spends way too much time eating Flavor Blasted Goldfish, making baby pterodactyl noises and watching Chopped. And who the heck majors in mathematical economic analysis? Yes, read that again. As if there was not already enough math in economics. If you are lucky enough to get Meghana as your advisor, look forward to her capturing all of your embarrassing moments on camera only to be merciful with them, having to change at least once because she made you laugh so hard, and knowing that with Meghana you have a friend who will be there to fiercely defend and support you every step of the way. Jaecey (not to be confused with Jay-Z) is sure to make your time at Rice an enjoyable and fascinating one. She is young and ferocious, while simultaneously being an old soul and will be sure to make you feel at home here. Having achieved a conference title the past year, this D1 swimmer is a girl with many talents. Not only is she a gifted athlete, but she is also a passionate journalism student. Majoring in English, she is constantly finding the time to write thought provoking articles for the Thresher. If she ever quizzes you on movie quotes, try your hardest; they can be tough (hint:her favorite movie is When Harry Met Sally). Her other true loves include Chick-fila, Pizza, Coffee shops and Jimmy Johns in which she will convince you to come join and “treat yo self”. Alicia Caldwell, Baker ‘18 and Sydney Franzen, Brown ‘19

Legend has it that on August 18, 2013, the first premed undergrad to AP out of organic chemistry matriculated into Rice. This legendary student was THE Ben Tour. Ok, Ben didn’t actually do that. But this is just one example of the crazy, hilariously entertaining stories you’ll get to hear from Ben now that he is your advisor. From skydiving and anti gravity machines to hundred yard water slides from the terrace, Ben’s crazy ideas highlight his adventurous, excited approach to life. A frequent gym go-er and sports lover, Ben was once the starting quarterback of the football team (the Wiess freshman flag football team, that is). From his cowboy boots to his music playlist, Ben loves everything country. And when it comes to two stepping, he will literally sweep you off your feet with his dance moves. As you’ll soon know, Ben loves to joke around, and his table-smacking, head-banging laughter is absolutely contagious. With Ben, you will immediately feel at home, with his extremely approachable and welcoming personality. Although Ben is a ball of endless energy and loves to have fun, he also is a great friend who will always be there for you to talk or just have a chill night hanging out. Jennifer Kroeger is the friendliest redhead to ever come out of San Antonio. Her smile has literally been dubbed the “happiest face at Lovett,” and sometimes she feels the need to cover it up in order to prevent people from being blinded by sheer joy. If you ever need cheering up, she is always armed with a gallon sized bag of stickers (to put on her own exams since for some reason professors don’t???) and a collage of cute animal pictures. When she isn’t practicing for Campanile, the student orchestra, or doing work in Commons, she can be found Netflix and Elliptichill-ing at the Recreation Center or taking solo trips to the zoo or the movies. She is an avid fan of boy bands and the TV show Parks and Rec, and is fond of spontaneously quoting the latter. If you are one of the new students who nabbed Jennifer as an Advisor, you are beyond lucky to have such a caring and smart person to welcome you to Rice! Carolina Hatanpaa, Lovett ‘19

Get pumped to have Emily as your advisor because this girl is going to make O-week one of the best weeks of your life. Hailing from Colorado Springs, Colorado, this fabulous girl, who I have the privilege of having as a room-mate, knows the true meaning of “work hard, play hard”, as she works away at her Econ and Psych homework on the weekdays, but is always ready to have fun on weekends. Once Emily becomes your friend, you know that she has always got your back, and no amount of weird and embarrassing encounters will ever change that (I speak from personal experience). Whether in the realm of academics or life in general, she is always ready to be someone to confide in, laugh with, and serve as a guide through tough times. Get excited, because after O-week you’ll be wondering how you ever lived without her amazing presence in your life. Chloe Wilson, Lovett ‘19

Born in Houston, Texas, Kevin is an eccentric, lovable, and genuine guy. Formerly infamous at Lovett for rarely wearing a shirt, Kevin is a workout buff who never misses an opportunity to admire himself in the mirror. If you ever want to have a late night talk, Kevin is the go-to guy — he can listen intently, and he offers the greatest advice. First and foremost, he is a Christian. He also loves to keep himself busy, spending his free time planning events for Rice Empower, doing research at Methodist hospital, and managing $money$ as Lovett’s treasurer. An aspiring physician, Kevin genuinely loves people, and he always makes sure to keep up with his friends. Be on the lookout for Kevin during O-Week -- or, more likely, the Rec Center. Margaret Roddy Wiess '18 // CHBE // Knoxville, TNMargaret Hodges Roddy is basically Wonder Woman. With the strength and fierceness of part-Amazon part-Valkyrie warrior-princess, a heart of pure gold (if not vibranium), and passion for life that knows no bounds, Margaret is sure to rock your socks off (so now you can wear Chacos all the time like her)! This living embodiment of carpe diem oozes out southern hospitality and is sure to make you feel at home. When she isn’t mowing down the opposing quarterback in powderpuff football or fashionably sporting all-denim everything, she’s probably brightening someone’s day with her infectious smile and exuberant personality. If you are lucky enough to have Margaret as a part of your O-Week experience, be sure to ask all about her adventures as a camp counselor, her days breaking ankles playing field hockey, her escapades as the youngest child in a crazy family, or simply what it’s like to see the world from all the way up there. In all seriousness, it’s nearly impossible to find a more caring, compassionate person on Rice campus than Margaret. Nicknamed “4WD” or “4 wheel drive” for being efficient, strong, and not knowing the meaning of road rage, Margaret is a Chemical Engineering, tour guiding, student government organizing, Head Caregiver-ing force of nature. In true superhero fashion, Margaret is often the one to save the day, the one to sweep down to your side when things aren’t going so well and help rectify any situation. She is the gal who is always in your corner; you couldn’t ask for a better advisor! Ajay Subramanian, Wiess ‘18 and Josh Kaye, Wiess ‘17

Getting Lawrence as an advisor means you have one of the most passionate and friendly Lovetteers you could find! Once you meet Lawrence, you will find someone who is liked by everyone and called many nicknames includ-ing “Larry”, “ Lo”, “Lars”, and “ Harari Ferrari”. Regardless of what you call him, you’ll always be greeted with his classic grin that he is seemingly always wearing. Lawrence embodies his hometown’s New York values on the Lovett floor hockey team where he acts as brick wall in the goal. During a typical day, you’ll find Lawrence coordinating events as President of Rice Hillel, and at night you’ll probably see him in the Lovett Commons working on yet another CHBE problem set. He always finds time to help others with their academics (he’s a Peer Academic Advisor AND an Academic Fellow). With all his work done during the week, you’ll find him chilling out on weekends with his door open, welcoming anyone and everyone who wants to hang out with him. Lawrence is a great guy and he will make you love Rice, Lovett, and him. Zack Draper and Daniel “Dirty Dan” Faraldo, Lovett ‘18

Twenty one years ago, this Glorious Green Earth was #blessed by the birth of the one and only Sunday-Brunch-ing-Goat-Cheese-Loving-Outer-Loop-Running-Coffee-Drinking-Trend-Setting-Yoga-Wizard aka Darcy Curtis. Join-ing us from the historic city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Darcy brings her bright smile and charming personality to Lovett, where she serves as a Rice Health Advisor, an Academics Coordinator, and a Keeper of Coffee at Rice Coffeehouse. When she’s not busy being a straight up All-Star, Darcy enjoys scrolling through pictures of cute animals on Instagram, exploring ~hip and trendy~ places in Houston, and re-watching Disney Classics while cozied up under layers of blankets. If you didn’t think it could get any better, she’s the perfect person to go coffee-shopping with or talk to when you need someone, and she’ll love you no matter what. Ladies and Gentlemen, Darcy really is everything you could ever want! Rahul Kothari, Lovett ‘17

Hey there Upper South Campus Lovetteers! Gossip Girl here, your one and only source into the amazing lives of Lovett’s advisors. Spotted: Ishawty tearin’ it up on the powderpuff field, ball in one hand and paintbrush in the other. Word on the street is that Ishani is one of the kindest and most caring people at Lovett College. This Math-Econ and Visual Arts double major will never fail to ask you how you are doing and will always be there for you at any hour of the day. Whether it’s to help you freak out about school and/or life, or to giggle over silly things found on the Internet (you will soon start to question the amount of bad puns, silly jokes, and crazy gifs that she always has at the ready), Ishez will always be at your side without a second thought. She is a true Lovett devotee, serving as a New Student Rep, Chalkboard Rep, and Associates Coordinator all in the same year! I can’t wait for you to get to know this advisor because I know that she will be the best friend you make all year. Arpam Dutta Hanzen '19 // KINE // Houston, TXIf you happen to spot a good-looking Indian guy wearing a Superman shirt, chances are, its Arpam Dutta. This Kinesiology pre-med has a passion for all things health, including working out, eating healthy, and making sure other people know that they aren’t eating healthy. However, don’t be fooled by his literal and figurative rocky exterior; he has a soft spot for cats and the movie Tangled, and if you like either of them, consider yourself one of his good friends. If he’s not in his room binge-watching shows on Netflix, he can probably be found mentoring at PAIR, a program he cares passionately about that connects Rice students with refugees in elementary, middle, and high school. Arpam can easily spark up a conversation with anyone, whether it be about soccer, movies, or music. Seriously, he has hundreds of songs and bands on his Spotify playlists, and he has the perfect song for any situation. It might be a little hard to get him to open up on a deeper level, but once he does, you’ll realize what an interesting and fascinating person he is. Ethan Lau, Hanszen ‘19

Sugar. Spice. And everything Rice. These were the ingredients chosen to make the perfect advisor, Bailey Douglas. When she is not leading the Illuminati, Bailey spends her time playing volleyball and sometimes watching Major League Gaming videos. Bailey likes eggs: if you are her freshman, bring her several eggs. Like, dozens of eggs. Just give them to her and wink. She’ll know. She loves supporting Lovett and made us proud as a member of the Bike Team for Beer Bike 2016. As the ex-mascot of her high school’s football team (ask her about it), her cheerful demeanor and encouraging attitude cannot be matched. Not even by her pony - yes, she owns a pony. Sometimes, however, this energy comes in the form of spontaneously blasting an air horn in your ear or laughing so hard that she feels like she is going to throw up. She’s so supportive and loving; if you are in Bailey’s O-Week group, your first year is off to an amazing start! With Bailey as your advisor and friend, just like Allstate, you are in good hands. Arabella Jenkins, Lovett ‘19 and Jake Hassell, Lovett ‘16

It is rumored that Evi is a combination of two parts onion, one part valley girl, and one part Steve Jobs. While these all have varying degrees of truth, it IS definitely true that this talented Computer Science major majorly rocks! Her love for boba is frightening, but her love for onions is even more frightening; we gave her a full onion once and she literally ate it like an apple. It was gross. “Alright, okay” (she sings this all the time). When Evi isn’t sleeping in her room - wheth-er at night or during her random 10 minute naps throughout the day - she can be seen around Rice, playing cards, hanging with her CCF group, or just skating around on her penny board in her trademark button down, shorts, and sandals. Despite all of her random weirdness, she’s an incredibly friendly and caring person; we speak from personal experience in saying that she will be great at welcoming you to the greatest university in the world! Greg Van Kirk and Kari Leigh Brinkley (Duncan 2019)

Pop, lock, and drop it. This semi-quiet boy will quickly warm up to his new friends as he dances his way into your heart with his terrible dance moves (ask him to show you). He’s better than any magical nanny; he’s better than any magi-cal umbrella; and, he’s better than any spoonful of sugar. Hector Picon is known by many and treasured by all who come within a few feet of him. This Justin Beiber look-alike - a much better looking version, at that - is a Biosciences major pre-med who is more than willing to take a break from studying for his next biochemistry test to come help with whatever you need. He is a vital part of Lovett culture as he lives to serve his college, his Sophomore Service Award serving as proof. Chief Justice, Beer Bike Coordinator, former New Student Representative - Hector does it all. One minute he is in a lab at MD Anderson examining which genes or proteins that play a role in the metastasis of breast cancer, and, the next minute, he is running up and down the court for the club basketball team. So, watch out, ladies and gents - you got a special one with Hector. Get ready to have a field day with the best advisor, rather, the best person on campus. I hope you brought comfortable shoes. Alex Young Lovett '17 // ECON // Chapel Hill, NC // O-Week AssistantHis name is Young Money, but he goes by Alex Young. This senior from North Carolina really does it all, from smashing opponents in Super Smash Bros to composing musical pieces for his friends. And, if he is not too busy drawing out basketball plays or using his economics degree to diagram a cost benefit analysis of a date for his roommate, he is probably on the prowl for some late night Whataburger. It only takes a couple of minutes to witness the brilliant humor of this natural comedian. His jokes may come from anywhere, but especially be on the lookout for his snapchats - they’re legendary. He’s a primetime baller whose passion for basketball is outmatched only by his knowledge of the sport. Alex might seem like a domineering figure because of his height, but don’t be intimidated by his size. “Young” (as many of his friends call him) is one of the most approachable and genuine guys on the planet. No matter how busy he is, this gentle giant will always make time to chat with or listen to his peers. His willingness to be there for people is part of what makes him such a reliable friend. Alex truly is someone you want to get to know, so if you see him around, talk to him. You won’t regret it, I promise. Linden Shih, Lovett ‘17

Thank you so much for reading this book! We put a lot of time and love into making it and hope it got you excited to meet the whole team. If you want to see an online copy of the book as well as the O-Week videos, visit the www.lovett.rice.edu! For Move-In Day (August 14th), use the format of the attached tag we have includ-ed and follow the instructions we have included and will send again to your Rice email! We know this book has been all about Lovett, but make sure you check out the campus wide O-Week book. Lovett College is amazing but so are all the other colleges. Try to make friends with students from other colleges! It will truly enrich your time here at Rice. When it comes to choosing extracurriculars, find your passions and throw yourself into one or two or even three activities that are worth the time you must invest in them. Overcomittment is rampant on Rice’s campus. Don’t fall into the trap! Take care of your-self! We definitely aren’t your parents, but from our two or three years in college, we have come to recognize the value in eating healthy, sleeping enough, and taking care of your mental and emotional wellbeing. Don’t be ashamed to ask for help. Every person has to at least once during their time at Rice. Step out of your comfort zone. Explore new passions. Do crazy things. Make mistakes and learn from them. College is about doing all of those things and knowing that you have your friends and your family here at Lovett to laugh you through those moments or to help you back up when you need it. We cannot wait to meet you on the 14th. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Love, BAM
