DEAN’ S LETTER Dear York Chapter Members, As the leaves on the trees have transformed into their spectacular beauty, I am reminded of the many colors we as organists are able to create with our playing. As one who plays a pipe/digital organ weekly, I am always experimenting with colors of sound. Recently, I found an English horn and a Piccolo which worked admirably. The organ can be very colorful if we take the time to experiment with registration. After all, that is “half” the challenge of playing the organ well. Look for some new colors of organ sound at our next chapter meeting. The new organ at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 West Market St in York will play host to Swiss organist Douglas Bruce of Basil Switzerland. The organ will boast many colors in the French Romantic organ tradition and I am sure Mr. Bruce will put the instrument to the test. Welcome to another new chapter member, Nelle Bailey. There are several errors in our new membership directory. Please see the list of corrections below. I hope that you will participate and become involved with the meetings of the York Chapter, AGO. We look forward to seeing you soon. Victor Fields

Subject: Recruiting at Notre Dame Greetings, At the moment I am recruiting students for our Master of Sacred Music program at the University of Notre Dame. We are extremely excited about what is going on here. The degree combines music (two organ recitals, organ literature, music history) and liturgy courses. There are details of the program on the website: http://www.nd.edu/~msm/ There are eight organ students in the MSM program—four in each class. The program is extremely competitive (we had sixteen applications last year for four slots), and the level of playing is extremely high. The assistantships pay full tuition for two years plus a stipend of $12,500 per year for two years. Typically a student on an assistantship works in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on campus. All students in our MSM program are supported with tuition grants. If you know of any prospective un-dergraduate students or others who are not currently enrolled in a graduate program, I would appreciate hearing from you. If you have any names to suggest, I am happy to contact them. Our new DMA program is nearly ready to accept applications. Watch for details soon. Our new Fritts organ and organ hall are stunning. We have an eclectic-style tracker organ in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart that is also used for teaching, practice, and performance. You can see the Fritts at http://music.nd.edu/about/facilities/o-malley-organ-reyes-organ-and-choral-hall/ If you know of anyone who might be interested in applying, I am happy to hear from you. Or, give the prospective student my email address and/or phone number. Many thanks for your help, and all the best, Craig Cramer, DMA Professor of Organ University of Notre Dame Notre Dame, Indiana USA 574-631-7836 http://music.nd.edu/faculty-and-staff/craig-cramer/
