JURY THE ORIGINAL ART 2014 The Fine Art of Children’s Book Illustration RAÚL COLÓN, Chair CARIN BERGER, Assistant Chair EXHIBITION DATES: October 22 - December 20, 2014 DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: Friday, July 18, 2014 The Society of Illustrators invites artists, publishers, agents, and authors in the children’s book field to submit to the 34th annual exhibition of The Original Art. Founded by Dilys Evans in 1980, the show celebrates the fine art of children’s book illustration. It has been sponsored by the Society of Illustrators for the past twenty-four years. The selection process will be by a jury of outstanding illustrators, art directors, editors, and experts in the field of children’s publishing. They will choose the books that will be represented in the show and select gold and silver medal recipients. Jurying is anonymous, and an artist may have no more than two books accepted for the show. ANYONE MAY SUBMIT: Publishers, illustrators, agents, and authors Publishers, please pass along an entry form or information to eligible artists if you are not able to submit their work. ELIGIBILITY: All entries must be published in the U.S. Books printed overseas are eligible. Self-published books are not eligible. Books © 2013 and 2014 and F&Gs © 2014 will be accepted. Picture books and other illustrated books whose prime market is children twelve years and younger will be considered. Chapter and young adult books must have at least eight full-page images. No jackets. No textbooks. Only illustrated books (traditional or digital media) are eligible. No photographic books. HOW TO ENTER: Submit printed books or F&Gs. Entry material will not be returned. Entries will be donated to appropriate charities. Fill in all the information on the entry form and tape it to the back of the book. Artist’s address, not c/o publisher or representative, is required. ENTRY FEE: $30 per title / $20 for SI members submitting their own work Fee must accompany entries. Please make checks payable to: Society of Illustrators. If paying by credit card (Visa/MC/Amex), please attach information (type of card, name on card, number, exp. date) on a separate sheet of paper with entry form. AWARDS: Gold and silver medals chosen by the jury. Lifetime Achievement Awards nominated by a blue-ribbon panel and voted on by artists juried into past shows. She also oversees the art and design of all middle grade and YA fiction and nonfiction, including the New York Times bestsellers Princess Academy, Wednesdays in the Tower, and Crown of Midnight. KELLY MURPHY wrote and illustrated her first picture book, The Boll Weevil Ball (Henry Holt), in 2002. She has since created artwork for over thirty books including Fiona’s Luck (Charlesbridge), Hush, Little Dragon (Abrams), Secrets at Sea (Dial), and the New York Times bestseller Masterpiece (Henry Holt), which earned an E. B. White Read Aloud Award. She currently teaches at RISD. Her website is: kelmurphy.com ELIZABETH SAYLES has illustrated over twenty-five books for children, including The Very Little Princess series by Marion Dane Bauer (Random House) and I Already Know I Love You by Billy Crystal (Harper Collins). The Goldfish Yawned (Henry Holt), which she wrote as well as illustrated, was a Bank Street Best Children’s Book in 2005. She’s also an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts and CUNY/Queens. She has been awarded both Gold and Silver Medals from The Society of Illustrators for her work for adults, and in 2009, Newsweek Japan selected her as one of “100 Japanese People the World Respects.” She is also a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts. The list publishes twenty to thirty books per year for all ages, created by many of the most beloved talents working in children’s books today, including many New York Times bestsellers, New York Times Best Illustrated Books, Society of Illustrators Gold Medal recipients, and ALA Notable Books.
