Controversy doesn’t end with deer cull

Christine van ReeuwykNews Staff

Oak Bay and the Capital Regional District announced Tuesday that the population reduction component of the Deer Management Strategy pilot project was complete.

Mayor Nils Jensen called the 16-day cull a success, with 11 deer removed as part of the CRD deer management strategy.

“This is a pilot project. It was more about learning whether this could be done in an urban environment and in a mild temperate climate and how it could be

done under those circumstances,” said Jensen. “It wasn’t about fixing a problem with a one-time cull.”

The Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations issued Oak Bay a permit to cull up to 25 black-tailed deer. The contractor, Kootenay resident Ron Kerr, whose previous experience includes several population reduction programs in Cranbrook and Kimberley, was trained by provincial wildlife staff in capture and euthanization procedure. Modified clover traps were active on private properties – seven bucks and four does were captured and killed.

The B.C. SPCA, which started voicing concern in 2013 over the cull and continued to share concerns publicly, said the results don’t meet the definition of success.

“To say it’s a success is really misleading. You’re not addressing solutions that you claim to have with urban deer conflicts,” said Sara Dubois, chief scientific officer for B.C. SPCA. “If they were concerned about overpopulation you worry about females. If you are concerned about vehicle areas, you trap around roads. … They have no measures beyond political points here.”

B.C. SPCA along with organizations such as DeerSafe Victoria opposed the cull, citing other portions of the deer management plan that they felt hadn’t been addressed. Those include speed reduction, public education and a proper deer count.

“We don’t know what the population is,” Dubois said. “From a scientific perspective, no answers have been achieved from these actions.”

The purpose of the pilot project in Oak Bay was to reduce incidents of deer/human conflict and as the first in an urban neighbourhood, information was gleaned, Jensen said.

“We were, of course, concerned about vandalism and criminal activity which was seen in Kimberley and Cranbrook areas, we were able to show it can be conducted without that,” Jensen said.

While the permit allowed Oak Bay to continue the cull up to 25 deer until March 15, Kerr was unavailable.

“We could have found someone perhaps locally but it wouldn’t been a training issue and an experience issue,” Jensen said.

The Oak Bay Breakers fell a quarter short in their quest for the B.C. senior girls high school basketball championship.

The Breakers were tied 39-39 with the Brookswood Bobcats as they headed to the fourth quarter of the provincial semifinals. The Bobcats outscored Oak Bay 25-11 in the final frame to earn a 64-50 win on their way to the senior girls provincial championship.

Morgan Roskelley paced the Breakers’ attack with 17 points, while Andrea Psotka notched 13 and Lauren

Yearwood and Sophie de Goede each chipped in 10.

Oak Bay finished off their season with a 71-49 win over the Riverside Rapids to finish third at the AAA senior girls championship in Langley.

The Breakers never trailed in the game, led by Yearwood’s 24 points with de Goode adding 16.

Yearwood and Roskelley were each named first-team all-stars, while de Goede received an honourable mention and Roskelley also earned the Quinn Keast Foundation Scholarship.

Oak Bay opened the tournament with a 72-45 win over Elgin Park, followed by a 66-47 win over MEI. Psotka led Oak

Bay against Elgin Park with 15 points, while de Goede’s 28 points topped the scoresheet against MEI.

Brookswood held off W.J. Mouat 60-48 to win the senior girls crown.

Oak Bay’s junior girls had to settle for a fourth-place finish at their provincial championship.

The Oak Bay juniors got off to a strong start in Langley, knocking off Brookswood 47-30 before edging New Westminster 47-46. The Breakers lost the semifinal against eventual champion Panorama Ridge 73-39 and dropped a 52-40 decision to Kelowna in the game for third place.

Politicians unite to promote artist’s induction

Christine van ReeuwykNews Staff

MP Murray Rankin, MLA Andrew Weaver, Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen and Oak Bay’s arts laureate Barbara Adams signed and sent a letter Friday in their combined bid to have the late Ted Harrison included in the National Gallery of Canada.

The push started in the Yukon – where Harrison developed his now-famous colourful style – after he died Jan. 16 in Victoria at the age of 88. Harrison moved to Oak Bay in 1993 and opened a studio on Oak Bay Avenue in 2006 where fans from near and far would come and watch him work. Not long before the studio closed in late summer 2012, Harrison moved to a residence just beyond Oak Bay boundaries.

“He was a real stalwart of our community, he lived in the community, he had a store on Oak Bay Avenue, he worked with kids in elementary schools in Oak Bay and lectured at UVic,” said Rankin.

The renowned artist was known for his colourful depictions of the Yukon – where he spent two decades – and the Pacific Northwest where he spent the past two decades.

“We talk about how he captures the spirit of life not only in the Yukon but of course in British Columbia,” Rankin said of the letter.

His favourite line of the letter to the board of trustees at the national gallery is: “There are few Victorians who have seen the Olympic Mountains glow purple after the sunset and not felt that nature was imitating a Ted Harrison painting, rather than the other way around.”

In 1987 Harrison was awarded The Order of Canada. In 2004, he was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and presented with the Order of British Columbia in 2008. Harrison also donated his personal archive to the University of Victoria library in 2011.

“His unique and vibrant style is something many many of us in British Columbia and Yukon relate to,”said Rankin

“I’m just very, very honoured to be able to take this to the federal government and urge the national gallery to do so. The fact we all came together to sign this letter is an indication we all feel this way.”

Residents group seeking input on planning issuesChristine van ReeuwykNews Staff

One group of residents plans to make itself heard while Oak Bay develops a planning committee. Citizen group Oak Bay Watch wants to have a voice in developing the terms of reference for the new committee that will work toward implementing the official community plan put in place last year.

“We’d like to be part of those terms of reference,” said Anthony Meers, Oak Bay Watch member.

Oak Bay Watch formed to protest the results of the 2007 bylaw zoning change that deals with house size as well as development proposals they view as inappropriate that were considered by council such as “excessive, unreasonable variances for the Clive” that saw significant opposition in the community, said member Mary

Douglas.It underscores why they want

input on terms of reference for the planning committee that Oak Bay is set to implement.

“Our concern is very soon there’s going to be a new planning committee implementing the new community plan,” Meers said.

They plan to take a proactive approach, based on little trust in the process from their experience during developments that faced huge opposition, and take their ideas to council ahead of the matter. The terms are expected to be on the committee agenda Monday night.

“We don’t want that to happen again,” said Meers, adding it took too long to rectify, and even now there’s no guarantee the changes recommended to council will be implemented. If it is implemented, they say, the recent review of the bylaws that restrict floor area and lot coverage is an example of a

successful process, and a good model.

“We’re not against development, we’re against inappropriate development,” Meers said.

“We want to change the meaning of consultation,” said fellow member Graham Ross.

The group hopes to introduce a comprehensive, collaborative process that would ensure residents have a stronger say in future zoning bylaw changes.

“Anyone in our community who wishes to have input can certainly do that by writing us or coming to speak to our committee of the whole. We’re more than happy to hear … from any group of individuals,” said Mayor Nils Jensen.

Oak Bay Watch points to a Jan. 27 B.C. Supreme Court decision where Justice Mark McEwan ordered new public hearings on two downtown Vancouver

properties in a controversial deal between the City of Vancouver and a developer. A neighbourhood association questioned the city’s fairness to the public and McEwan quashed both the rezoning bylaws.

McEwan chastised the city for not providing enough documentation and information to the residents prior to public hearings.

“I don’t know how this changes the law, it’s another legal principle that has been in place… I’m not sure this is necessarily a decision that takes us in a new direction,” Jensen said. “There’s clearly an obligation on the municipality changing a zoning to present all the documents to anyone who’s interested and to have procedural fairness … We now, with our e-agendas, make all our development variance permit applications available online. So it’s much easier now for a person

to get their information.“We strive to be open and

accommodating with respect to information.”

Oak Bay Watch also cites public hearings where a majority voiced opposition on a proposal council did not attempt to modify or call for further review. They see the court ruling as backing that push for councils to more scrupulously consider input from the public without a pre-ordained conclusion.

“A public hearing is not just an occasion for the public to blow off steam: it is a chance for perspectives to be heard that have not been heard as the city’s focus has narrowed during the project negotiations,” McEwan wrote. “Those perspectives, in turn, must be fairly and scrupulously considered and evaluated by council before making its final decision.”[email protected]

Re: Martin Riley’s letter “Drivers over a barrel”. The only reason you are complaining of $1.20 per litre prices is because it was so recently below $1 per litre.

It is so cheap in Washington state because their taxes are lower. If you’re going to make comparisons, the price of gas in Venezuela is $0.02 per litre, why don’t you go live there?

The oil companies can get away with whatever they want and right now it is cold on the east coast, unlike here, so the demand for oil is much higher, hence I would expect the price to go up. I’m no economist, but I understand that.

You live in Oak Bay, take the bus or a bike if it’s too expensive for you. I find it quite easy to get around here via both methods. Better yet, put your money where your mouth is and go buy an electric car if it bothers you so much instead of complaining to your local periodical.

Erin DlabolaOak Bay

Cull part of larger issueThe question of whether or not

we should kill the wild deer in Oak Bay can never be resolved until we answer a much more profound question, that being who are we as a society?

I suspect that I’m a fairly typical Oak Bay resident, which means I was born into a culture and nurtured in a spiritual tradition that placed

me outside the natural world and in dominion over it. While this detachment enables a measure of munificent prosperity, it also leaves behind a shameful legacy of poisoned water, dirty air, barren landscapes and countless numbers of dead animals who were often guilty of nothing more than being in the way of our comfort and prosperity.

If we want to imagine our society in a different more holistic way than we will find some way to live with the wild deer in our midst.  If we don’t want to do that then we will extirpate the deer from our community and think ourselves the better for it.

R.A. PatersonOak Bay

Lester Pearson’s challengeI would like to congratulate the

House of Lords for passing historic legislation which requires the British government to allocate 0.7 per cent of their GDP to Overseas Development Assistance.

Why this is of such interest to Canadians is because of our Prime Minister, Lester Pearson, who in 1969 challenged the developed countries to achieve this level of funding to those countries less fortunate than us.

Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Luxemburg and now Britain have achieved that target. Unfortunately, despite promises by several governments, Canada is still below 0.3 per cent. Perhaps it is time

for us to pass such a law in Ottawa and honour the memory of a great man.

Sam WellerOak Bay

Troubling imageI must agree with the reader about

the graphic photo in the Oak Bay News of the slain deer in the anti-cull advertisement.

Sadly this is what the Oak Bay mayor and council are condoning by having a senseless deer cull in this community. An innocent deer is trapped, brutally slaughtered and thrown into the back of a pickup truck as if it was a piece of garbage. This is what the mayor calls humane, and if the photo bothers people, which it does, then they know who to blame.

Harrison deserves to be in national gallery

It takes a special kind of talent to bring together politicians from various jurisdictions and all political stripes. But that achievement pales in comparison to some of the other accomplishments of the late Ted Harrison.

Harrison called Oak Bay home for more than two decades, opening a studio along The Ave where his many fans from around the world could stop by and watch him work. Harrison died in Victoria in January at the age of 88, but not before he crafted a colourful legacy that spans the West Coast that he loved so much and far beyond.

“What he did is he painted who we are as Canadians. He didn’t dress it up, he didn’t intellectualize it. He painted in a voice that all Canadians from three to 103 can understand and enjoy,” said Harrison’s friend and biographer Katherine Gibson.

The renowned artist was known for his colourful depictions of the Yukon – where he spent two decades – and the Pacific Northwest where he spent the past two decades.

In 1987 he was awarded The Order of Canada. In 2004, he was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and presented with the Order of British Columbia in 2008.

But one honour still eludes Harrison. His work has yet to be hung in the National Gallery of Canada. Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen, Victoria MP Murray Rankin and Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver are hoping to change that. The trio is lending their voices to the premier and MP of the Yukon, who are lobbying to have Harrison’s work included in the Ottawa gallery.

“There are few Victorians who have seen the Olympic Mountains glow purple after the sunset and not felt that nature was imitating a Ted Harrison painting, rather than the other way around,” said Rankin in his letter to the board of trustees at the national gallery.

According to the national gallery’s mission statement, its collection opens the way for appreciation of the finest in artistic expression, making it accessible to the public across the country.

The inclusion of Harrison’s works would say more about the gallery’s ability to live up to its mission than the talents of a truly great Canadian artist.

Sketch group draws on Cowichan flavour

Christine van ReeuwykNews Staff

Annual treks influence the yearly Victoria Sketch Club show.

The name’s a bit of a misnomer, though you generally sketch before painting, said 17-year member Victor Lotto. It is, however, historical.

“It actually is a 126 years old, this club,” Lotto said.

For over a century Victoria Sketch Club artists have gathered weekly to paint or sketch from local scenes or indoors from live models or from still life. Its story began in 1909, when a small band of enthusiasts formed an arts society. The result was the Island Arts Club with 56 charter members, including Samuel Maclure, Emily Carr, the Crease and Pemberton families.

By 1935 the Island Arts Society was the largest in Canada but in the intervening years interest waned except for the “Sketch Club” component which met regularly. In 1952, the Island Arts and Crafts Society became known as the Victoria Sketch Club.

As the oldest art group west of Ontario, the club takes pride in its history both to maintain its traditions and bring in new energy, ideas and artistic styles. A notable addition in recent years was the late Ted Harrison, whose unique vision and portrayal of Canada’s north received international acclaim.

“We have 35 members in the club and entry is through a juried process. The executive look at paintings by people interested in the club. So there’s not that much turnover,” said Lotto. “We do have one woman

who’s a member of the club, been with it for 50 years, her mother used to take her when she was a little girl.”

This year, the group that meets each Tuesday at Windsor Pavilion celebrates a record of unbroken activity covering 105 years.

“Those sessions are really painting sessions, we’ll either have a still life set up or bring in a model and do figure drawing or painting. The big activity is to work toward this show at Glenlyon (Norfolk School),” Lotto said.

The annual show and sale is held in the school gymnasium, started when a former member was a teacher at the Beach Drive establishment.

Much of the art is inspired by the annual group jaunt throughout Vancouver Island and its archipelagos. Travels take the group from Salt Spring Island to Tofino, last year to Cowichan Bay and

this year’s plan is Parksville. “We’re unique in at the end

of September we all go away somewhere, different places on the Island, to paint for a week,” Lotto said. “Every day we go out and paint, and in the evenings we do critiques of our work.”

The group of retired professional artists, and those who held it to their heart while paying the bills as doctors, lawyers, generals and psychiatrists, continue to learn, bringing in outside instruction a couple times a year.

The objectives remain to foster the practice of painting and drawing and to contribute to the variety and richness of the local art scene. Club members continue to put on exhibitions either collectively or on a group basis, exhibit with such organizations as the Federation of Canadian Artists and participate in

many community events.March 17 at 7 p.m. the

group launches its own community event. A show and sale that features more than 100 works, primarily acrylic and oil with a handful of watercolour in the mix, will range from representational to abstract.

“You’ll see a lot of paintings that were done on site in Cowichan Bay … It’s one of my favourite painting spots,” Lotto said. “The entrance is free and we always have a door prize.

The Victoria Sketch Club show and sale runs March 17 to 22 at Glenlyon Norfolk School, 1701 Beach Dr. It opens with the 7 p.m. launch on March 17 and runs daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. closing at 4 p.m. on March 22.

Lotto plans to do a demo on Friday, March 20. Visit victoriasketchclub.ca for samples of work. [email protected]

A group is preparing to take a tour of the solar system without ever leaving Oak Bay.

The inaugural

Vancouver Island Walk of the Inner Planets is set for March 15, when a group of sky watchers will stroll along a scale-replica journey through our planetary neighbours.

“First of all, it’s a great way to explore Oak Bay. A good part of the route is along the Centennial Trail that was created

in 2000,” said walk organizer Bill Smith. “But more than that, it’s to get people talking about the planets.”

Smith devised the idea of a scale-replica model of the solar system not long after the Cattle Point Star Park was created in Oak Bay to raise awareness of the problem of light pollution.

“I wanted to create some reason why people might want to go there during the day when they can’t see the stars,” he said. “How do I make these buses of tourists stop there?”

He at first wanted to create a model of the solar system at Cattle Point but was informed it would be impossible to get permission for any more cairns along the water. But that wasn’t enough to stop Smith, who instead simply shifted his model to a much larger scale.

With Cattle Point representing the sun, Mercury is at Willows Beach, Venus

at the Oak Bay Native Plant Garden, Earth at Anderson Park, Mars at Gonzales Lookout, Jupiter at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Saanich, Saturn at

the Sooke Potholes, Uranus at China Beach, Neptune at Port Renfrew and Pluto at Bamfield.

“We now have the world’s biggest orrery [planetary model],” said Smith. “On the

same scale, the edge of the solar system is called the Oort Cloud, and the Oort Cloud is at the Canadian Embasy in Beijing.”

But the March 15 walk will stick to the inner planets so

passports won’t be required.

For the purpose of the walk, Oak Bay’s municipal hall will be substituted for Jupiter’s moon Europa, and it is there the walk will start at 10 a.m. It will travel along Foul Bay Road (the asteroid belt), before going on to Gonzales Lookout, Blueberry Hill, the Native Plant Garden across from the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, past the marina to Willows Beach and back to the Village along Bowker Creek, stopping for refreshments at the conclusion.

Smith estimates the walk will take between two and three hours.

“I did it with my dog and it was really quite easy,” he said. “I don’t want people to be intimidated.”

Those wanting to participate in the walk are asked to meet at the municipal hall at 10 a.m. March 15. You can view some of the sights from along the walk at  http://imgur.com/a/bDcmY#[email protected]

Mechanical failure blamed for crashPower steering failure is believed to be the

cause of a March 6 crash on Victoria Avenue. A large truck travelling southbound in the 1200

block of Victoria Avenue suffered a power steering failure and struck an unoccupied parked vehicle. The damage was minimal to both vehicles, however, the unoccupied vehicle sustained a large scrape on its rear bumper and the truck’s power steering fluid discharged onto the roadway. The truck was towed from the scene.

Near miss for crossing guardA driver on Musgrave Street nearly hit a

crossing guard March 4. Police said a driver was not paying attention and almost hit the guard who was holding their sign. The registered owner of the vehicle was sent a written warning.

Cyclist hit on Beach DriveA cyclist suffered a broken collar bone and a

driver was issued a ticket after an incident March 6.

The cyclist was struck by a large cube van making a right

turn into the Oak Bay Marina parking lot. The van and the cyclist were both travelling northbound. The driver of the van was issued a $196 ticket for driving without consideration.

Illegal U-turn costs driverOn March 6 two vehicles were travelling

eastbound in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Avenue when the lead car suddenly and unexpectedly conducted an illegal U-turn. The traffic incident caused a minor collision between the two vehicles. The driver of the lead vehicle was issued a violation ticket for an unsafe U-turn, which comes with a fine of $121.

Early intervention on graffiti Arrangements are in place between a child’s

parents and the Oak Bay Recreation Centre staff to repaint a skateboard ramp after mischief. On March 6, a maintenance worker witnessed a child spray painting a graffiti tag on the skateboard ramp and contacted the police.

Police deal with parking ticketsOn March 3 police were called to Wilmot Place

for a vehicle with 13 outstanding parking violations. The registered owner worked nearby and paid the outstanding balance of $200 to Oak Bay.

Fishing gear stolen from boatA pair of down riggers, bolted to a boat, were

stolen sometime between Feb. 28 and March 6 when police were notified. The equipment from Scotty Longarm electric was taken from the 3500 block of Beach Drive.

Ford an Expedition to eleganceThe popular Ford Expedi-tion gets a makeover this model year, bringing this 2015 version into a differ-ent class of elegance.

Looks:A completely updated front end aligns itself with the Super-Duty and the new F150.I like the look of the grille, large and in charge. The featured projector style headlamps with LED fog lights made the front end of the Platinum Edition tester look like a piece of jewelry!A raised power dome hood and nice bodylines certainly give this Expedition some class. The power retractable running boards are standard on this edition but I find they react too slowly for me when the door is opened. No doubt for some the boards would be a great addition while others might think of them being in the way. When you design a sport utility vehicle, it is always tough to give the back end some shape. As an engineer, you’re wor-ried about aerodynamics but in this case the designers still managed to match the back’s elegance to that of the front.

In The Cab:As you open the door, you are greeted by ambient lighting that can be customized with a selection of colors. The Platinum has leather seats, leather door trim and console accented by wood inlays. The dash is hand warped and stitched giving this cabin a very upscale look. The front bucket seats are heated and cooled. The second row folds flat along with the third row, which drops at the touch of a button. The command center controls everything from entertainment to climate.

Speaking of entertainment, the sound system is a Sony premium audio system that features 12 speakers and 390 watts of power.Safety first:Front seat mounted side airbags, safety canopy system with three row-side curtain airbags and rollover sensor. Advance-Trac with roll stability, tire pressure monitoring system, and trailer sway control are just some of the standard features.Roadworthy:The Expedition delivers on space, com-fort and functionality while driving like

a smaller SUV. Very little, if any, body roll. Steering is magnificent and easy, and responsive while changing lanes and finding a tight parking space.

Verdict:The upgrade this vehicle has received raises the quality, safety, and comfort to a new level.

Power:This vehicle comes standard with a twin turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that puts out 365 horsepower and 420 lb ft of torque. The transmission is a six-speed se-lect shift. 4.10 gear ratio. Towing is made easy by the transmission tow/haul mode, which helps keep you from gaining too much speed when towing downhill. The engine maintains its power band while towing up a hill keeping the speed and momentum constant.

Pump frequency:1w6.2 / 11.8 L/100 km (city/highway) Warranty support:Basic, 4 years/80,000 km. Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited distance.Powertrain, 6 years/110,000 km.Safety restraint, 5 years/100,000 km.Roadside Assistance, 5 years/100,000 km.Sticker price:XLT $49,299, Limited $63,399, Platinum $65,399.

100% ELECTRIC

NISSAN LEAFPresented by

SCRAP-IT

The all-electric Nissan LEAF tells white lies!

The Nissan LEAF miraculously cut a journey in half this week.I’ll explain. I took the plug-in sedan on a 43-kilometre trip from Vancouver to Driveway HQ, on 152nd Street, in Surrey. When I set out, the screen display showed that I could drive emission-free for 146 kilometres. Now I could have taken off like an F1 supercar and street raced all the way, because electric power offers instant tire squealing torque if you press the pedal to the metal. But that’s not me. Spurred by my ecofriendly driving the previous day, the clever car had decided earlier in the day that I could do 156 kilometres on a full charge. Not boasting but that’s easily more than 20 kilometres better than the average driver can expect to achieve. Okay, maybe my head

is swelling. The big 1-4-6 winked at me. I threw the stick into ECO mode and with two flicks of the wrist pushed it into the enhanced B-mode, which puts the braking power regeneration into overdrive, so to speak.I glided silently down the road, picking up pace ever so gradually in the busy city traffic. Rolling

down the hills to Marpole, I could feel the juice from the brakes topping up that battery. On the freeway, I hit the posted speed limit and

40 minutes later pulled into HQ. The display flashed 126. I had covered 43 klicks with the power required to move the car just 20! Such fun.Next week: More on the joy of driving electric.

It would have been no great surprise if car designer Alfonso Albaisa had become a designer of stationary objects – buildings! The Infiniti Executive Design Director fell in love with design as a young boy living in Miami, FL.As he recalls his childhood, he mentions that this wasn’t the beach part of Miami that might come to mind when we think of the city. Albaisa’s father was a building architect and so as a youngster the budding designer spent a lot of time at the office.“I remember this as if it was yesterday, that the shadows would move on the streets and I’d sit in the entrance of my dad’s office playing with the little buildings and models.”Then one day, sitting on the steps of his father’s office, fate changed his life’s ambitions changed. It was then that he heard and saw it for the first time.“One day, I was seven or eight, I heard a rumbling and it pulled into the office,” Albaisa explains.“It was an E-Type Jag convertible. And that really changed it for me… It was just so beautiful. Because this was the early 70s. Miami wasn’t Justin Bieber going down the street in a Lamborghini. You never saw these these kinds of cars, so it was shocking for me, that a car could be so beautiful… And then I

started drawing cars.”From then on, he knew that designing vehicles would be in his future. Then again, that wasn’t without explora-tion into other mediums of design.Albaisa says, “Life takes its course and I really got into art also, so I studies art in the beginning.”He holds a degree from Pratt Institute in New York and he attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. While still in school, Albaisa was hired by Nissan Motor Corp Inc. even before he graduat-ed and hasn’t looked back. He has been

with the company more than 25 years. “Every day is different in this company,” he explains. “My first two or three years in the group, I worked on the J30. And I did a yacht, I was designing TaylorMade golf clubs and I played beach volleyball competitively, so I had this crazy life.”He designed furniture on the side, as well.“As an artist, change causes change and changes your mind,” he states. His roles over the years have evolved, too. Albaisa joined the Nissan Design team in San Diego in 1988. From 1997,

he held a number of senior Design positions within Nissan leading up to his appointment as Design Director, Nissan Design America, in 2004.In 2007, he was appointed vice pres-

ident of Nissan Design Europe and in 2011 returned to the U.S. as vice pres-ident, Nissan Design America. In 2012, Albaisa was named design director of Nissan global Design, Nissan brand passenger cars, including Zero Emission Vehicles. That’s his current role as we’re sitting in the rear of the spacious Q70L sedan at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. (Albaisa will be sending the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration con-cept to the Vancouver International Auto Show) lbaisa will be sending the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration concept to the Vancouver Inter-national Auto Show.Perhaps it’s an uncon-ventional setting for an interview, but then again, he’s not a partic-

ularly conventional individual! – And it’s a quiet haven from the bustle of the exterior commotion.Though he’s a veteran in his role, he tells me, “It’s quite a difficult job. You’re con-stantly an ambassador for the dreams of your people.”He adds, “Ideas are not demonstrable. You’re always worried that the call is going to come before the idea is ready to be shown. This is probably the only thing that really worries me. I have a lot of really talented people and I want to keep there.”Aside from the same emotions that we all feel concerning our respective roles at our workplace, he embraces the changes, the ups and downs and the no-tion to create brand unification through the sketches on a notepad. When it comes to describing his role, Albaisa remarks, “I still feel like I just started.”

Aero 8 is a blast from the pastThe all-new Morgan Aero 8 draws its design inspiration from the popular British roadsters from the 1960s.But the similarities between the new 8 and those cars from the past ends with the looks because the Aero 8 is reliable! – It’s powered by a BMW V8 engine capable of propelling the two-seater from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Prices later but it won’t be available here – sadly.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has driven dozens of cars in his 40-plus movies. Here are the top five coolest cars featured in movies:“Vanilla Sky”: In this reality warping, romantic drama, Tom plays David Aames — the head of a New York publishing firm with access to whatever he pleases. In the opening scene, Cruise drives a Ferrari 250 GTO replica through a deserted New York City, ultimately ending in Times Square. Aames’ daily driver throughout the film is a1967 Ford Mustang, and after he falls in love with a different woman, his ex-girlfriend Julie (played by Cameron Diaz) tries to kill them both by driving off a bridge in her 1970 Buick Skylark.“Rain Man”: After his father’s death, Charlie Babbitt (played by Cruise), a grey market sports

car dealer (seen importing Countaches in the film’s opening), flies home to Ohio to settle the estate. After learning he has an older brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is inheriting the full estate, the two set out on a cross-country road trip back to California in their father’s 1949 Buick Roadmaster.“Jack Reacher”: Tom plays Jack Reacher, an ex-Army MP who is investigating the murder of five innocent victims of a sniper shooting. The real high-light of the film is a six-minute car chase in which Cruise drives a 1970 Chevelle SS. He tries his best to chase down an Audi A6 while being pursued by police. The driving stunts are of quite a remarkable quality; especially considering Cruise did all of his own driving throughout the movie.“Risky Business”: In this 1983 dark-comedy dra-ma, Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a high school student living with wealthy parents in suburban Chicago. His parents go away on a trip, giving Joel

strict orders to not touch the stereo system or his father’s 1979 Porsche 928. Joel’s unruly friend convinces him otherwise, leading Joel into a down-ward spiral of trouble that includes a car chase in the Porsche, and later some major water damage.“War of the Worlds”: Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker in New York City. His pride and joy seems to be his 1966 Shelby GT350H rather

than his two kids — this all changes after an alien invasion of Earth. The probability of an alien inva-sion seems just as unlikely as a decidedly unmoti-vated N.Y. dockworker owning such a rare car as a Shelby! – But then this is the movies.Nick Gravlin writes for Hagerty Insurance. The pancake frog is a new kind of frog hitting Victoria streets – literally.

Biologists from the Habitat Acquisition Trust have been surveying local roads after reports of dead frogs.

Biologist Kristiina Ovaska and volunteers visited some busy Victoria roads on a wet night to count the damage: 84 dead and 34 live Pacifical treefrogs were counted within the hour. At the end of the night, 144 were found.

“This is just one small section of one road. Imagine the numbers of amphibians that are being killed across the region. We knew amphibians in Victoria were crossing roads but are alarmed about the high observed mortality rates,” said Ovaska.

HAT says every year frogs and salamanders are killed on busy roads as they head towards wetlands to breed.

“We were shocked this year when we went out and found dozens when we

thought we’d see a few here and there,” said Adam Taylor, executive director of HAT.

They have followed the same path from forest to pond in the spring since before roads. With the

addition of residential and commercial developments, more trees are removed and important wetland habitats are drained.

“This significantly reduces available habitat for them to live, and what is left has been divided and fragmented by our extensive road networks,” said Taylor.

Reductions of the pancake frog population is possible.

“Small fences can redirect amphibians to lit culverts, or tunnels can be created if needed. But first, we need to know where the problem spots are,” said Taylor.

Late at night or early morning is when they are most noticeable. If you witness any amphibians sightings, squished or mobile, please call the frog roadkill hotline at 250-995-2428 or email [email protected].

With the last few months of interest in the story of the Franklin Expedition, my thoughts turned to another ill-fated Arctic expedition, which has a direct connection not only with Victoria, but with the Maritime Museum of B.C.

In our collection we have a few bits and pieces, including an oar, from a former whaling vessel called the Karluk.

In 1913, this already worn ship embarked upon a doomed journey.

The Karluk had begun life in 1884 as a California-built brigantine designed for fishing, but was converted into a whaler a decade later. Her bows

and sides were covered with two-inch ironwood sheathing in this conversion, and she completed 14 successful whaling trips.

She was not a large vessel, nor particularly suited for extreme conditions.

Only 321 gross tons and 39 metres in length, Karluk was powered by sail and a coal-fed steam engine of only 150 horsepower.

When she was purchased by a strangely charismatic explorer called Vilhjalmur Stefansson in 1913 for $10,000, there was immediate rumour that she was unfit for the job she had been assigned, for Stefansson intended to take this 30-year-old vessel on a perilous journey into the most inhospitable of Canadian environments: the Arctic.

Stefansson was hired by the Canadian government to lead the Canadian Arctic Expedition, whose purpose was to explore western Arctic regions for ethnological, geological, zoological and botanical study. He intended to set up a research station on Herschel Island.

He led a team of 31 people, including an Inuit family with two children aged 3 and 8, sailors, explorers and scientists aboard the Karluk, which was bound for Nome, Alaska, there to head west and rendezvous with two other ships at Herschel Island.

Karluk left Esquimalt harbour in June 1913, under the command of Capt. Robert Bartlett, who had Arctic experience as an explorer and seal hunter. He was later credited with saving the lives of most of the people who survived this ill-fated voyage.

Right from the beginning Bartlett harboured doubts about the Karluk’s suitability for her task. She was not sturdy enough in the bow to break ice, nor was her engine strong enough to push her through packed ice.

He assumed that Stefansson did not intend the ship to spend the winter in Arctic waters.

To compound his concerns, Stefansson had packed inferior quality cold-weather clothing, much of it second-hand, and cut-grade pemmican to save on costs.

That August, shortly after leaving Nome, Karluk was caught in early pack ice, which trapped the vessel and her crew and began to sweep them west.

Unable to rendezvous with the other ships at Herschel Island, the crew simply had to wait.

When the current slowed for a few days in September, Stefansson took a few hunters and set off across the ice on a supposed hunting trip.

The ice once again began to sweep the Karluk west, and Stefansson’s party never found her again.

There has been a good deal of speculation that Stefansson’s decision to go hunting in such circumstances was really a decision to abandon the ship and its crew, knowing that the Karluk simply wasn’t a match for the cruel Arctic winter which was closing in on them. He and

his party safely returned to Alaska.

The ship, meanwhile, drifted helplessly for months. In January 1914, the ice floes finally punctured the hull and she sank as the crew, evacuated onto the pack ice along with as many of their supplies as they could save, watched.

Marooned, the crew splintered into factions. Two groups of four set off on their own, and perished from cold and hunger, their remains not found for years. The remaining 17 made it to Wrangel Island where they set up camp. Cold, suffering from malnutrition and low morale, most were unable to forge ahead towards the mainland.

Bartlett and Katatkovik, one of the Inuit guides, set off on foot towards Siberia and then to the Bering Strait to summon help.

By the time he returned to Wrangel Island with two rescue ships it was September 1914. Three more of his crew had perished in the meantime.

This remarkable story of tragedy and endurance has come down to us from the survivors and despite its direct connection with Victoria, remains to this day far less well-known than that of the Franklin Expedition.

The distinct architec-tural features of many Oak Bay’s home help define the character of the community.

Helping ensure that dis-tinct character remains a part of the commu-nity for years to come, a panel discussion next week will reveal some of the secrets to restoring heritage homes.

Oak Bay Heritage presents Restoring Your Home: An Evening With The Experts Wednesday night at Windsor Pavil-ion.

“I think it will be a ben-efit to homeowners who love older homes, who want to maintain their character. They face the problem, do they repair, do they replace?” said Oak Bay Heritage Foun-dation president Robert Taylor, who is facilitating the panel discussion.

“I think what they’ll

get out of this session is some really good advice on how they can, in fact, repair a lot of original fixtures. They don’t nec-essarily have to replace them and go out of char-acter with the house.”

Bill Patterson is the president of Citta Group who has worked on restoring a number of heritage properties throughout Greater Vic-toria. For Patterson, replacement is always a last resort.

“If it’s unrepairable, than you replace. In the long run, from my expe-rience as a builder, it’s more practical. It actu-ally costs less money to repair than replace in almost all cases,” said Patterson, who will be a part of Wednesday night’s panel.

Joining Patterson on the panel will be Sim-one Vogel-Horridge, the president of Ross Bay Villa Society, and local author and historian

Nick Russell.“We don‘t own heri-

tage houses,” said Rus-sell. “We are privileged to borrow them for a time, and hopefully we leave them as good as we found them.”

Russell, who has restored several houses, says some homes just cry out to be rescued.

“But you‘ve got to see beneath the surface – beneath the stucco or asbestos or drywall – to find the essential build-ing,” he said.

“The excitement comes when you look beneath those ugly lay-ers and find the real nature of the house. And the reward comes from restoring that essential character, so the original owner could walk in, and say, ‘Oh, it hasn‘t changed a bit.’ All it needs, is time and money.”

Experts offer advice on restoring your home

There are two types of heri-tage properties in Oak Bay. Heritage registered is a way of recognizing a home by put-ting it on the heritage registry, but that doesn’t preserve the home. A heritage designation is something an owner requests from council which protects the house from any changes without a heritage alteration permit.

Taylor said no matter the des-ignation, Oak Bay is blessed with a wealth of older homes.

“They may not be heritage designated, but they’re still valu-able old homes which have this character,” said Taylor, who is the midst of renovating his sev-enth older home.

“There was this huge building

boom [in Oak Bay] just before the First World War. About 900 houses were built in a four or five-year period,” said Taylor.

Another minor boom would take place in the late-1920s, with another following in the 1950s.

Patterson is currently working on five those homes constructed during the 1920s, working to resort the storybook cottages of Patio Court, just up from Glen-lyon Norfolk School on Beach Drive.

“They were built in 1927 and never had any work done on them. To make them desirable for a family to live in they need to be modernized.”

He said while all of today’s amenities, such as modern wir-ing and plumbing, will be added to the interior of the homes, the

exteriors will retain their original character.

Patterson said restoring older homes often requires more care-ful decision making than con-structing a new home.

“You can go the wrong way easier, you can go too far some-times,” said Patterson. “The thing that I always say to peo-ple is you have to respect the structure that is there as much as you can. It’s not worth it to make a room one foot bigger just because that would be the ideal size. It involves too much work, it’s too invasive. It costs more than what you’re getting back.”

The panel discussion begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Windsor Pavilion, 2451 Wind-sor Rd. Donations welcome and refreshments will be served.

Royal B.C. Museum launches online portalAndrea PeacockBlack Press

People all across B.C. now have access to the Royal B.C. Museum’s collections, archives, stories and findings from home and school.

The Learning Portal is a new website launched by the Royal B.C. Museum that serves as a tool for children and adults wanting to learn and explore various topics.

Themes range from animal studies to biodiver-sity to military and war. There is also a section to learn more about the City of Victoria.

“The Learning Portal is part of our commitment to the digital and physical renewal of our educa-tional infrastructure at the museum,” said Royal

B.C. Museum CEO Jack Lohman. “Creating a major online study resource for

informal learning will inspire curiosity about our important collections and stimulate creative think-ing.”

Each section has a variety of related articles, videos, images and stories from experts in the field.

Teachers, librarians and staff from the Ministry of Education had input in the design of the Learn-ing Portal, along with Royal B.C. Museum staff.

“B.C. public libraries support millions of life-long learners, and this is a fabulous way for learn-ers to personalize the way they explore history,” said Maureen Sawa, CEO of Greater Victoria Public Library.
