Every public school reserves enough places within their school for students in their local enrolment area. Parents may however apply to enrol their child at a school outside their enrolment area. Non-local applications may be considered by the school's enrolment panel, according to the department's policy and subject to selection criteria such as availability of appropriate staff and classroom accommodation. Contact the school to find out more about our out-of-area selection criteria. Formal requirements prior to enrolling at Oak Flats High School include:

Completed application form. Proof of residential address or completed Non-

local application form. If previously enrolled in a NSW public school a

transfer certificate. If from interstate or a private school a copy of a

birth certificate. A copy of immunisation certificate.

A copy of any medical or special needs documentation. ie., Medical conditions and/or medication

The A-Z of Oak Flats High School

Absences Under the Education Act 1990(/section 22) and the Education Amendment Act 2009 (No.25), parents have a legal responsibility to ensure the regular school attendance of their children aged between 6 and 17 years. The school day starts at 8.30am with period 1. It is each student’s responsibility to move to their first class promptly after the bell rings in the morning, and ensure that their Teacher electronically marks them as being at school.

- Late arrivals Students arriving to school after the bell should go directly to the Student Administration office. Late students MUST provide a note from home explaining the reason for their lateness. The student’s lateness will be recorded as a Partial Absence on that day. Where no note is supplied for lateness to school the absence will be marked as being ‘unexplained’ or parent can call the school.

- Early leavers Students must come to the office with a note to obtain an Early Leavers pass before school. Students must be accompanied by an adult and are not permitted to go home alone. All absences, full day or partial are entered into the Attendance Register and are a legal requirement. This procedure supports the safety of your child. What should I do if our family is going on holiday in school time? Families should try to arrange holidays during school vacations. If they can only be arranged during school time, you should contact the school principal in advance to discuss the matter. Accidents & sudden illness Occasionally students become sick at school and we place them in our First Aid Room. The office staff are to contact the parents/carers NOT the student. Parents are strongly advised not to send sick children to school. It is vital that all contact details for your child are up to date and accurate in case we need to get in touch with you through the school day. Basic first aid for injuries suffered at school is administered. No creams are dispensed. Ice and bandaids are used, however anything more serious, parents are called.

An ambulance will be called to transport a child to hospital should the need arise. Every effort will be made to contact the parents or emergency contact prior to calling an ambulance. Allergies, anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes & other chronic illnesses Some students require specific support in a health emergency such as an asthma attack. Please supply the school office with a Medical Action Plan, including a photograph of your child and all procedures and medication to be used if your child should require this intervention. Anti-discrimination / anti-racism All schools have developed procedures for dealing with complaints about discrimination against students. Appointments with teachers If you wish to make an appointment to speak with your child’s teacher, please ring, email or message the teacher via the parent-portal to organise a mutually convenient time. Arrival at school We ask that students do not arrive at the school before 8:00am as there is no supervision prior to this time. Assemblies Assemblies are held on Tuesdays in the school hall from 9:30am – 10:00am Bikes, scooters and skateboards

Monitoring student behaviour To monitor student performance and behaviour at school, OFHS has a wellbeing system. If your teachers believe you are not performing in class, not behaving appropriately or having some problems, you will have your name entered on SENTRAL Wellbeing. If your name appears a number of times you will be asked to attend an interview to discuss the situation, possibly with your parents. If it continues, you may be placed on a Monitoring Card. A Monitoring Card requires you to have your teacher’s evaluate and comment on your behaviour in each lesson. If improvements are not seen, further action will be taken, according to the school discipline system. NAPLAN Years 7 and 9 participate in the nation-wide testing program in literacy and numeracy. Each family is advised of their child’s literacy and numeracy standards in relation to standards identified as State/Australia levels. At the same time, the test results, individually and collectively, provide valuable information for the school. Newsletter The school publishes a newsletter, twice a term. The newsletter is an excellent source of information and gives insight into our school and broader community. Parents are able to subscribe, free of charge, to receive the newsletter directly to their email address or download the file from the internet or onto their mobile. “Newsletter Email Subscription” information is included in this document. If you prefer not to receive an electronic copy of our newsletter, you advise the school and we will send a printed copy with the youngest child for each family who will have the responsibility of delivering it home. The ‘News Blog’ on the school website also is a source of what is happening at the school. Non-smoking zone As of 18 July 1998, smoking is totally prohibited in all NSW Department and Education and Communities premises, including buildings and grounds. Office Hours Our office is open 7:30am – 3:00pm Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) The P&C Association is a forum to discuss a diverse range of educational issues and is the representative body for all families and community members. The association meets on Tuesday Week 3 & 7 of every term in the school common room commencing at 6.30pm. The P&C works in partnership with the school. It greatly supports the school with fund raising activities and participates in making key decisions within the school.

Parents, as partners in education, are encouraged through the P&C to play an active role in the education of their children. Parking Please do not at any time double park your car or park

across a driveway as this is very dangerous for our students. Student parking graveled area right hand side of the hall only.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) The core values of CARE, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILTY, with a focus on RESILIENCE, are encouraged through specialised lessons and the awarding of PBS tickets to those students who display these values through their behaviour in the playground, in the canteen, corridors and at assemblies. These tickets go into weekly prize draws with major prizes draws at the end of each term. VIVO Rewards "VIVO is the new way to reward and acknowledge students' positive behaviour as they progress through their school life. Staff award you electronic points called Vivos – the new student currency. Students can then redeem your Vivos on an exciting range of products on the www.vivoedge.com.au website. Students who receive a certain amount of Vivo points during a term/the year will be eligible for certain rewards during school hours such as Jamberoo Rec Park excursion, movie screenings and reward lunches. Vivo points let students achieve bronze, silver, gold, platinum and diamond award certificates. Students can use their Vivo points to shop online at the Vivo store to purchase a range of products and experience based rewards. The OFHS core values have a strong weighting on the Vivo program, as acting with Care, Respect, Responsibility and displaying Resilience are key attributes in social and academic success." Envelopes from the photographer are sent home, detailing packages available and the deadline for return of monies. Envelopes with payment to be handed to photographer.

Electronic Devices Policy

Rationale – Mobile phones, MP3 players and computers are an integral part of modern society. Furthermore, developments in technology mean that several of these devices may be one and the same. This rapidly developing technology can impact on the school environment. The school accepts that many students possess electronic devices, and use them as a part of their everyday lives. The school also acknowledges that the devices have a role to play in students’ safety and security, as well as in their learning. In order to prepare our students for the world in which they will live and work after school, it is imperative that we acknowledge and utilize technology in practical ways. A clear policy on the use of electronic devices at school is necessary to ensure that students’ wellbeing of any person, or is in breach of any law, is inappropriate and will be dealt with according to the school’s discipline code. This policy aims to give individual teachers ownership of the ways in which technology is used as a learning tool, for their benefit as well as students’. Policy – Electronic devices are brought to school and used at owners’ risk. No liability will be accepted by the school in the event of the loss, theft or damage of any device. Electronic devices may be used at breaks within the rules of this policy. In classrooms, individual teachers will stipulate if and when electronic devices are permitted to be used. The use of social networking applications such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc is prohibited during school hours. Students are prohibited from using electronic devices during assemblies, year meetings and similar activities. Parents are encouraged to contact students via the school office during school hours. Under the Telecommunication Act there are specific guidelines about the storage and use of inappropriate material. It is against the law for students to take photos, video or images of another person under the age of consent without parental permission. Students are therefore strictly prohibited from taking these at school. Should there be breaches relating to these areas the school will confiscate the device used and may contact parents of guardians for collection. A full range of discipline measures, including suspension, may apply. Breaches of the Electronic Devices Policy – If a student uses an electronic device inappropriately:

The device will be delivered to a Deputy Principal and can be collected at the end of the day If the device is confiscated three times, it will remain with the Deputy Principal until the student’s

parents/carers are contacted. Cyber Safety and Responsible Citizenship – It is important that student’s understand their responsibilities as a citizen of the school community. Our school values of Care, Respect and Responsibility apply as much on-line as they do off-line. Cyber-bullying is a part of the schools anti-bulling policy and will be dealt with in accordance with the schools discipline and welfare policies. Cyber-bullying includes all communications that seek to threaten, humiliate, intimidate, control or put another person(s) down.
