Oak Grove Mission Statement
Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful
discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the
world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.
Pastor Chuck Smith once told a story about a Papua New Guinea tribe that had a widespread birth defect. Everyone had one leg shorter than the other. Interestingly, the idol they wor-shipped also had one leg shorter than the other. They had cre-ated a god in their own image. I believe this is the same direction America is going. When people say, "I am spiritual, I am just not religious," it is code for "I'm making it up as I go." People effectively make a god in their own image when they say things like, "My god would never judge a person" and "My god would never condemn two people of the same sex living together in a committed relationship." But they just made up their own god. And their god, essentially, is them. What is the first of the Ten Commandments? "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Exodus 20:3). What is the second commandment? It is related to the first: "You shall not make for yourself a carved image" (verse 4). Idol worship is putting any-one or anything in the place of God. I read an article in USA Today about the fastest growing spir-itual group in America, which claims no affiliation with any faith. The article states, "This group, called 'Nones,' is now the na-tion's second-largest category only to Catholics, and outnum-bers the top Protestant denomination, the Southern Baptists. The shift is a significant cultural, religious and even political change." It has been said, "When a man stops believing in God he doesn't then believe in nothing, he believes in anything." We can't edit the Bible. We can't say, "I like this part of the Bi-ble and not that part." If we do, then we will end up with a god that is not the God of the Bible.

FROM YOUR PASTOR
On Sunday, May 19 we will observe Pentecost. On the day of Pente-cost, the Holy Spirit came to the disciples who were gathered in Je-rusalem after Jesus had ascended into heaven. All the people were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, yet they could all understand one another. Then, Peter, being filled with the Holy Spirit preached to those present and told them to re-pent and be baptized. Some 3,000 souls were added to the kingdom of God that miraculous day. The descending of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost marked the beginning of the Christian church and the Church has been proclaiming the word of Jesus Christ ever since. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God continues to work through the Church and add souls to the kingdom every day. Before Jesus ascended into heaven He promised the disciples He would send the Holy Spirit. He said, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” Indeed the Spirit came and has been with us ever since the day of Pentecost. Through the Holy Spirit, God is everywhere at the same time and with us at all times. The presence of God is always around us. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live Christian lives and to witness to those who do not know Christ. The Holy Spirit converts people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit comforts us and strengthens us during difficult times. The Holy Spirit is God’s pres-ence that we sometimes feel in a special way. Even though the Holy Spirit is with us, sometimes we resist Him. We are afraid of renewal, because it brings change and once we tru-ly let the Spirit guide every aspect of our lives, we are no longer in control; God is. When we resist the Holy Spirit we miss out on a deeper and fuller relationship with God. We don’t experience all that God has to offer. We get stale and do not grow as Christians. We as individuals and the Church become stagnant. As we celebrate Pentecost, let us truly open our hearts to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and power. May we allow the Spirit to lead our lives and motivate all that we do. With the Holy spirit in charge, we can accomplish great things in our lives, the lives of others, in this church, and in our world. Come, Holy Spirit, come! I’ll see you in church!

Have you been blessed to have a mother? Have you been blessed to have a special lady in your life who has been “like” a mother to you? Do you know a special woman who would appreciate loving recognition on Mother’s Day? Someone that you admire in her efforts as a mother or mother figure? Show her that she is special by having her name listed in the Mother’s Day Bulle-tin Insert on May 12th, 2013! If you would like to honor or remember someone in the Mother’s Day Special Bulletin Insert, please submit names to the church office no later than Monday, May 6th, 2013. Donations of any amount will be accepted and the goal is to raise $1,000.00 for the Capital Campaign Fund. *Note: We will honor our fathers in this same manner next month. Details to come.

From around the Southern Province
Onto Easter Sunrise Services a little rain must fall. And did it ever this
year, drenching the big one in Salem which traditionally draws thou-
sands. Count the attendance in the hundreds this time. Reporting from
sickbed, a tuning in to the trusty WSJS broadcast brought — absolute si-
lence for more than two minutes (what’s that dripping sound?). Then
someone gave the Home Church bell rope a vigorous yank, and the ser-
vice began: “The Lord is risen. . . .” Minister, congregation, singing, and
especially band all came through loud and clear over the new speaker sys-
tem, and so did the rain with its dripping sound in the background.
Raleigh Moravian reminds us to come its way over the summer
months to see the pottery exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Histo-
ry. Entitled “Art in Clay: Masterworks of North Carolina Earthenware”
and organized by Old Salem Museums & Gardens, the exhibit showcases
nearly 200 objects made by Piedmont potters including some by our 18th-
and 19th-century Moravian potters of Salem and Bethabara. The exhibit
runs through September 1. Check it out on the Museum of History’s web
site at http://www.ncmuseumofhistory.org/art_in_clay/index.html.
A little note from Moravian Ministries Foundation: The “Feed
My Sheep” campaign for Laurel Ridge has raised almost $800,000,
which not only paid for the new Summer Camp Kitchen but helped pay
down the debt on the 2007 expansion of Higgins Lodge. And since 2004
more than $2.9 million has been raised for capital projects at Laurel
Ridge. Now that’s support we love to see.
Trinity’s Br. John Jackman will soon be off moviemaking again. Pre-
viously he has written and directed the film biographies Zinzendorf and
Wesley. This time But Now I See will be on the life of John Newton, who
wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace.” Filming will be in Nova Scotia in late
May and on the North Carolina coast in June with the film’s release in
early 2014. So keep the klieg lights handy for the grand debut.
And up Mizpah way, filming was done for “The Ultimate Life,” a
Hallmark movie directed by Michael Landon, Jr. Theater release is
scheduled for September 6.
Catering to its aging (how about “maturing”?) membership, Leaks-
ville is planning a handy drop-off area and handicap parking. The cost:
$17,000. That’s over and above the regular budget. So pass the hat. May-
be twice. And tell the younger members you’re just thinking ahead for
them.
In preparing for its summer concert season on Salem Square, the Sa-
lem Band is hoping to have a donation of an electronic keyboard.

Ladies Night Out was fun! If you were not there,
consider attending the next one!
The food was good. The speaker
and music were sweet. The men
were such attentive servers and
the tables were a splash of beauty
and color and personality.
Thanks to Beverly Disher and
everyone who made it a lovely
evening of fellowship!
If you know someone who is
graduating, please contact the
