Sales Update David Vander Pol

We had a good operating month for the month of June of 93.0 compared to 96.3 for the same time period last year. This was led by having an extremely good top line revenue month of over 16 million

which is a record month for the company. This was helped by having an additional working day in June of this year compared to last year. We had some major one (1) time expenses of over $300,000, so our results would have been better than that without those major expenses. Once again there will be a fifty ($50) bonus for all regular hourly people on our team. This came from operating below a 94 in a given month. There is more potential as the bonus will get larger if we improve our bottom line.

We continue to look to bring more quality drivers on our team. Our on time service

performance suffered because of lack of P & D Drivers, late linehaul caused by not having enough P & D Drivers and Dock People, and failures of some of our pur-chased linehaul. We are having job fairs at some of the major terminals where we are being challenged i.e. Auburn, Portland, South Bay and North Bay, putting in job referral bonuses and in some cases actual signing bonuses for new people.

On another different note we believe long term that our industry will be changing the way we price our services from a class related pricing structure to a density re-lated structure. Some of our partners i.e. Southeastern and Dayton have purchased dimensioners which are systems that weigh and also measure the cubic capacity of a shipment which will give you a den-sity i.e. pounds per cubic foot. Many of our competitors are doing the same thing. We believe that it will take a large carrier i.e. Fed Ex Freight, UPS Freight, or a Con Way to start the ball rolling this way.

As discussed last month we have two (2) significant customers leave us i.e. Burling-

ton Coat and Wal-Mart. With our capacity issues being the way they are we need to find customers who are willing to pay us so we can make a profit and both of these customers would not allow us to get a price that would allow us to make money so we took action to separate ourselves from them. We are coordinating our efforts with Urban Outfitters and they should be leaving in the next forty five (45) days.

We have seen some movement in the right direction in our part-nership with E Shipping Exchange with more leads and at least one (1) more close – congratulations to Emory Poff in Las Vegas. We have started our additional training in this area and will com-plete all training in the next thirty (30) days.

As we all work daily, to “Bring Peace of Mind” to our entire customer base, it is more important than ever, that we collaborate with all of our fellow workers in all aspects of our business. In many of the past ar-ticles, I have talked about the need to focus individu-ally on the task at hand, and how important every shipment and contact is in the life cycle of our cus-tomer’s product. But as important as that “One to One” relationship is, it is just as important to have the ability to collectively work together as a team to-wards a common vision and goal.

When working in any capacity, are we willing: TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE, POWER, AND CREDIT ON DAILY DECISIONS?

Are we EAGER LISTENERS TO OTHERS?

Do we have the PASSION FOR THE CAUSE?

Working in collaboration with other terminals, de-partments, co-workers, or customers, will help all of us work towards that all important goal of “Bring-ing Peace of Mind” to each and every customer, and transaction daily.

So at the end of each shift, each day…ask yourself:Did I COLLABORATE with my team; to do the very best I can, for the external and internal customers at Oak Harbor Freight Lines?

Hopefully in almost each and every case, the answer is a resounding YES!

Congratulations to Gerrit Foster for winning the AMC Sales Achievement award for the month of June. He finished with 110.0% of goal in June after a disappointing May. Great recovery!

Gerrit is celebrating two years with OHFL. After six years dispatching ser-vice technicians for the banking industry ended in company-wide layoffs, he started with our Accounts Receivables department and was quickly promot-ed to the Inside Sales team. He continues to grow in experience and respon-sibility, as he took on team lead duties about a year ago and was promoted to AMC Supervisor early this year. When asked what he appreciates about working at Oak Harbor, he replies, “The sincerity of the leadership, the his-tory, and the wonderful opportunities ahead of us.”

Born & raised in the Seattle area, he is a huge fan of the Seahawks, Mariners, & Sounders. He lives in the Puyallup area with his wife of nearly 16 years, Dawn, their two boys, Lucas (9) and Seth (5), a cat, a dog, and 3 lively chickens. In his free time, he enjoys coaching youth baseball, t-ball, and soccer; cooking; play-ing sports; and teaching at children’s church. His favorite treat is anything chocolate & peanut butter, and he has an excessive appreciation of playing video games with his sons.

As a team, the AMC finished at 111.5% of revenue goal in June. We also made New Business, Partnership, & Field Rev goals as a team.

Once again, Alyssa Opland took the top spot in New Business revenue in June, at nearly 250% of her goal attained. Keep up the great work!

Significant new/returning business included Pacific Coast Chemical (NBY), Warrior Fireworks (MTV), & Copy World Inc (NBY) and a new lane from Fastenal Co (AUB).

We still have two openings on the Inside Sales team. We continue to seek out individuals who want to grow with OHFL, have potential as leaders, and are willing to relocate in order to advance. If you know someone or are personally interested, please send a resume to [email protected] or give David Stastny or Gerrit Foster a call to discuss!

Account Management Center Update

N. California and Northern Nevada District UpdateAs I write this article in mid-July it is hard to believe that we are already half way thru 2014, and what an exciting year it has been so far!We have made great progress in terms of revenue growth and profitability, yet we still have some great challenges to overcome.Speaking of revenue growth, the CN team was blessed again with some healthy revenue growth in June, surpassing the goals set for the district not only for June but so far we have also exceeded the YTD goal. June’s attainment was $73,482 on a goal of $71,704. Our ‘New Cheese” attainment was $64,468 on a commitment of $54,945 for new and additional routings. Some of the big hitters this month were: All American Label (Dennis Weishaar), Bamboo Depot (Kevin Loughlin), Kinnedyne and Macphersons (Justin Hoch), and Hettick AM (Peter Solinsky). So far July MTD appears to be on track for record-breaking month in 2014.

W. Washington, Oregon and Idaho District Update“Think of success as a game of chance in which you have control over the odds.” – Bo BennettThe month of June was a good month for both the Oregon/Idaho and Western Washington districts. Each district beat their revenue goal by 2%. The formula for overcoming to revenue goals in June was the same as it has been all year. Both districts combined topped $80,000 in new business! The Oregon/Idaho district was able to beat its cost per bill goal by $0.33. Overall, a fantastic job by both districts! This month’s employee spotlight is shining on Medford/Klamath Falls Terminal Manager, Scott Parry. Scott was raised in Salt Lake City, UT and he was born into the trucking industry. His dad worked in the industry for over 42 years for IML Freight, Yellow Freight, and the last 15 years or so, driving a straight truck for Xpedex. Scott remembers, “as a kid going to the terminal to see my Dad and getting the opportunity to sit in the trucks and going up on the dock to see all the freight it was a lot different back in the early seventies” Scott graduated from South High in downtown Salt Lake City in 1987. After graduation he went to work for Sears distribution center unloading trucks. In 1991, He moved to Reno, NV with a friend and started his career in the LTL industry with Viking Freight. In 1992, he went through the Viking driver training program and for the next 7 years he worked as a P&D driver. During those 7 years, he transferred to Seattle, and then back as the gray and wet skies of Seattle were not for him. When he came back to Reno, Scott got his first dock supervisor position at a small west coast regional carrier called WestEx which later became Saia. Since then, Scott has worked as an operations supervisor, city dispatcher, and account manager for Motor Cargo, USF & Old Dominion. At the beginning of this year, Scott came on board at Oak Harbor. In his personal time Scott enjoys spending time with his 2 boys Kolby (13) and Kade (11) they are both involved in youth sports and they also enjoy as a family boating, wakeboarding and riding their UTV, really any-thing outdoors. He is also very much looking forward to the fall and the beginning of football season which he’s a huge fan of College (Utah Utes) and (Nevada WolfPack) and Pro (49ers). He has enjoyed coaching Pop Warner football in the past and hopes to do so again once they are a little more familiar with the area. “I’m very much looking forward to the future here at Oak Harbor and feel privileged to join such a great TEAM!!!!” –Scott Parry

Sean Boland (Warehouse Manager at Silicon Mechanics)==> Brian Laverdure (AUB P&D)“I was hoping you could pass some praise along to our Oak Harbor rep. Our new driver, Brian, is great! He makes a point of having our stuff loaded in his truck so that we are one of his first deliveries in the morning. Consequently we have been seeing freight deliv-ered MUCH earlier than before (our freight showed up before 9am today, which never hap-pens). He’s also friendly and willing to help make sure our pallets counts are right before signing for them.”

Good Morning,To date, Oak Harbor freight has delivered all of the new curriculum materials directly to the schools with the exception of Barge, Disc Lab, & Adams, which are in the warehouse and will be delivered by me this week. The deliveries directly to the school went exceptionally smooth and timely. The delivery driver, Mike Schro-eder, (and Ricoh on Wednesday) coordinated the deliveries with me and with his excellent communication we were able to deliver the products flawlessly. He also needs to be commended for being able to back the trailer up into some areas that most people would have difficulty driving a car into.Oak Harbor freight did an excellent job on this project by going the extra mile to assure that the items were delivered as we needed them to be.Thank you,

Heather Mavandi (Bunzl) ==> Sal Leal (Fontana TM)“Today we had Oak Harbor shipment 23504000, Walmart into Barstow. The store called very upset he hadn’t received his pallet of bags he needed for the weekend. Order was picked up Tuesday night, dated 7/9/14, Tammy said Tue/Thur to Barstow, she received it Thursday and scheduled it for delivery Tues-day 15th. Their trucks are already out for the day and Barstow is far from the terminal. I said they really needed product. End result Oak Harbor is getting an interline carrier to get it to Walmart before 3:00 today. Thanks Tammy and those that assisted making this happen!

I LOVE THIS! I LOVE GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO FULFIL REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE! Last month we addressed shipments going to Las Vegas being interlined and delayed. Emory at the Las Vegas terminal said they would stop interlining and deliver Oak Harbor direct. Going that extra mile, be-ing heard and problem solved makes you the QUALITY CARRIER THAT EARNED OUR BUSINESS!

We agree with Walmart when we called with the good news. AWESOME!!

We really appreciate that extra mile. Thank you!Heather MavandiBunzl Distribution So CA

Tanya Bennett (Market Manager at Grainger) ==> Danelle Jones, Specialized Services“Hi Danelle,

Thank you SO much for taking on this request. It was not easy for me to get the ball rolling, but after I reached out to you it has been seamless. You are very good at your job and I would love if you could get me in contact with you direct supervisor so I can personally let them know how wonderful our experience has been working with you!!

Malcom Krause (Super Supplements / Vitamin Shop) ==> Rick Moriarty Auburn P&D Driver“This letter is in regards to one of your drivers, Rick (Moriarty). I have been with this company for five years and been working with Oak Harbor for four of those years. Rick has been picking up and dropping off shipments to us for well over a year now. Out of all the drivers who have picked up from us or dropped shipments off, Rick is by far the most outgoing and helpful. While most drivers stand by and watch as we load or unload the trailer, Rick is helping us grab last minute orders that need to make it on the truck. While I’m unloading, he’ll usually start down stacking pallets for us or empty our ice packs into our freezer. He double checks every pallet to ensure that old pro labels are removed from pallets that are ship-ping. Before he backs his trailer into our dock, he will come in and ask us which bay door would be easier for us to load or unload from. He’s constantly doing his best to see that we have the support we need as well as any additional trailers come our shipping days. As I list off all these extra tasks he does to help us make sure we ship out everything we need to, I think of this as not him just doing his job but doing more than what is expected of him. Everyone here at our DC enjoys his company and thinks of him as a very nice person. I would just like to send a huge thanks to Rick for all his help and just to clarify, unmatched customer service and well past due acknowledgement of his hard work.

On July 14th, 2014 lightning strikes started a fire in North Central Washing-ton. Towns with names like Pateros, Winthrop, Twisp, Carlton and Brewster were all were impacted by the raging wildfires. As of July 29th, 300 homes have been lost, 250,000 acres burned, and the fire only is only 59% contained. It has devastated these small communities, along with using up a lot of fire-fighters to help contain this.

Sonderen Packaging and PJ’s Pub and Grille, both in Spokane, WA, put to-gether a disaster relief donation center last week, accepting any type of dona-tions to help the victims and towns with this tragedy. Oak Harbor supplied a trailer for them to load into. Food, clothing and furniture were loaded for the victims of this fire.

On Saturday, July 26th, Ken Wright, P&D Driver from Spokane, drove the full trailer up to Pateros, WA, where town officials converted the high school into an aid station for the townspeople. Ken was able to take needed dona-tions directly to the communities involved. We would like to thank all those involved in making this happen. Everyone was appreciative of the donations, and the help Oak Harbor Freight Lines provided to these towns.

Each year, we will recognize drivers, dockworkers and maintenance personnel for accident and injury free work in the prior year.

Awards will be non-monetary. We expect our employ-ees to work safely. We wish to recognize those who are successful and demonstrate their commitment to working safely.

As those receiving the awards are modeling and pro-moting the company value for Safe Work, presentation of all awards must be done in an employee meeting that includes co-workers of the award recipients. Awards will be presented to deserving employees in a man-ner that brings appropriate recognition among their peers. Each individual is to be recognized individu-ally in front of their co-workers. As possible, Senior Management and/or Safety Representatives will attend Safe Driver and Safe Worker presentations, providing support and recognition of Oak Harbor safety values.

Summer is definitely in full swing as is evidenced by the tomatoes in my garden. To me there is nothing like fresh toma-toes right off of the vine and with all of the sunshine this year- it should be a good year!

As well, I have had the benefit of having many conversations with you and I know because the sun has been shining on Oak Harbor and our business has grown beyond our goals this year that this has caused some challenges/opportunities where our own capac-ity is concerned. Enter Specialized Services! One of the benefits of our Specialized Services division is that we are able to bring on additional business without these loads having to move within our own resources(Drivers, Trucks & Terminals…).

I am also aware that we have had some challenges in finding trucks to haul all of the Specialized Services loads you send in for us to get bids on so I would like to take this opportunity to share with you what we are doing about this and how you can help. Currently we have about 25 carrier partners that we work with from asset based companies like Schneider and Swift to non-asset based companies like TQL and USA Truck. This gives us the ability to have direct relationships with some of our carriers and also gives us the flexibility of improving our odds of finding a carrier by working with a non-asset company- a bit of the best of both worlds. The reality is that the fewer hands in the pot the better and this results in us having a better shot at booking loads for you due to more competitive pricing for our customers.

Our goal is to grow the number of direct carrier relationships we have as we believe this will allow us to build better relationships with the companies that will be hauling our customer’s freight. This will also give us more options in the marketplace and will help us to respond quicker with better information. The ideal carrier partner is one that has 10-50 trucks of their own and provide service both regionally and nationwide.

How can our Account Managers help? The answer is simple – You are working in your territory on a daily basis and you see the carriers that are out there and often hear about the carriers that are doing a good job when you are discussing Specialized Services opportunities with our customers. When you are in this situation please takes some notes on the carriers that are performing well and pass them on to either Henry Vander Pol or me and we will go thru our regular process of qualifying a carrier. Here is the information that will give us a running start:

• Carrier Name

• Type of Equipment you have seen or heard that they use

• MC# or DOT#

If you want you can snap a picture of the driver’s door on the tractor and send it to us as that typically has all of this information.

Remember that you can earn 10 points per month in your efforts to win Best in Class- That is 120/year!

Let me know if you have any questions about Specialized Services and how I can help you sell more loads. Thank you and Happy Selling!

Our total revenue w/o fuel is up 38% in July vs. 2013. We con-tinue to build our Kingman and warehousing business. Re-cently ULINE has become a major account for our terminal and a new source of growth. We have had the support of too many team members to list. We thank everyone for their hard work.

June was a challenging month for the District, we had a number of drivers and supervisors leave for other opportu-nities; even early into July we continued to have positions to fill. As I write this I am pleased to say we are now fully staffed.

We would like to welcome Craig Becker back as a key component of our Spokane leadership team. He had to undergo back surgery and he was greatly missed! We also would like to welcome back to our District Chris Gosnell; he will be helping on the O/B shift in Spokane. Thanks to Cory and the Boise Team for letting us have Chris.

We also had some changes in the leadership team in Pasco, our am lead person left and one of our new drivers Karst Wiggins has stepped into this role. (See Employee Highlight)

We also received our first new truck in Wenatchee and also have one headed for Spokane! Thanks to Dan and the Maintenance team for sending these our way! Breakdowns have been a challenge and we are happy to see some new equipment!

Over the last 6 weeks, we have been able to bring on some very good people around the district, it is exciting to see new energy in the team. Branon, Brian & Anthony have all been wearing many hats the last two months, spending a lot of time on the dock helping keep things rolling. We look forward to continuing to bring Peace of Mind to all of our customers!

Also as I write this we have had some significant rain in Central and Eastern WA which is helping with the fires! They do continue to burn and the re-building of homes, power lines and water supplies will take many months. Everyone in the Wenatchee terminal seems to have a friend or relative who was impacted by the fires. Things are improving and I know donations and prayers are still very much welcome!

Karst Wiggins – Pasco Inbound Supervisor

We would like to Highlight Karst Wiggins for the Month of August. Karst came to Oak Harbor in October of last year from being the Assistant Transportation Manager at Goodwill Industries. He had work for there for 10 years. He was born in Sunnyside WA and resides in Richland WA; he has a Daughter that is 15 years old who is a cheerleader at the Prosser High. Karst enjoys taking his bike for weekend rides. When ask what he likes about Oak Harbor he replied “I enjoy working at Oak Harbor because not one day is the same and I get to be a problem solver. In coming to us Karst had no previous experience in the LTL business; he learned quickly the pace of being a P&D driver and has taken to it very well excelling to be a very efficient driver for us in Pasco. As of late we had our Inbound supervisor resign and began to examine candidates; Karst became visible with his prior experience at goodwill managing employee’s. We made the decision on Monday the 2nd of June to move forward with Karst in this role. As any Inbound Supervisor will tell you it is a very challenging role with many task along with needing the ability to remember routes and customer requirements. Karst has quickly learned how to carry out these duties in a very short amount of time especially in the heat of our busiest time. We are excited for the future he will bring to our team in Pasco and thank him for the Job is he has done thus far!

The final calendar mock-up has been sent to the printer for them to create the press ready proof. We had an amazing number of people submit pictures for the calendar and I thank everyone for participating.

The image chosen for the calendar was submitted by Jerry Winn, P&D Driver from the Portland Terminal.

If you submitted a photo or 10, that did not get chosen for the calendar, take heart, we may use the pictures in many other ways. For example Matt Poulson submitted the image we used for this months newsletter cover.

Please keep the pictures coming from all over the terminal network. I would love to use one of yours and give you credit for the shot.

2015 Oak Harbor Freight Lines Calendar

On a separate note, in this edition of the Newsletter, we want to recognize the Sacramento Terminal, under the leadership of Tim Wallmark and John Jacobson for being the recipients of the “Tee it Up Award”. This past month the award was issued by David and Ed Vander Pol to the SAC team for their much improved and consistent perfor-mance thus far this year. Attached is a pic of part of that group as I presented the award on behalf of the Vander Pol’s.

As it is the tradition for this award, It is now up to Sacramento team to select the next recipient.
