FANTASTIC FORMALFANTASTIC FORMAL
Friday week ago our Year 12 students
had a glamorous time at the
Stamford Grand Hotel in all their
finery.
The students were a credit to
themselves and their school and they
all looked amazing.
Thank you to Jia Manolo and Jarrod
Craven who spoke on behalf of our
school as hosts and to Kirsty Rogers
who coordinated the event.
ELECTION DAY BBQ ELECTION DAY BBQ FUNDRAISERFUNDRAISER
Thankyou to the families who
forwarded cash or offers of support
for the Election Day BBQ fundraiser.
Each family received a form however
only 20 (of 150) returned them. We
have extended the request for
another week in the hope that each
family can indicate how they will
help.
Our biggest need is for servers and
chefs on the day- students in Years 9-
12 can also cook and serve on the
day (with our supervision of course!).
We also would like donations of
coffee, tea, milo, foam cups, plastic
spoons, icing sugar and lollies for
biscuit decorations.
If you are able to provide any of
these please contact the school via
[email protected], or a
staff member or phone Fiona Hennig
on 0417 894 977.
ALI’s FIRST YEAR REVIEWALI’s FIRST YEAR REVIEW
Ali (Alicia) Adams has successfully
completed one year at Oakbank
Area School as the Pastoral Care
Worker. Ali’s review panel
commended her for the great
relationships with staff, students and
parents she has formed, the Breakfast
Club she has developed and her
support in classes. Well Done Alicia
we look forward to working with you
for many years to come.
END OF SEMESTER 1END OF SEMESTER 1
Semester 1 for Year 7-12 students
finishes at the end of week 8.
Students are well aware of the timeline
and the need to complete assessment
tasks by the due dates. Many students
have balanced their work
requirements over the semester, but
some have left assessment pieces to
the last minute and may be starting to
panic.
Semester 2 will start before the
holidays, so students will have new
timetables and in some cases new
teachers to challenge them. The
school’s timetable is structured to
enable senior students to have equal
halves to their academic year which
is 36 weeks long. Many of our subjects
run for a semester (half year) so it is
important that each subject receives
an equal entitlement to the timetable.
Where subjects run for the whole year,
there are limited changes.

CROSS AGE BUDDIESCROSS AGE BUDDIES
The Year 9 home group has made
buddies with the R/1 and 3/4 classes
for a task in their Civics program. Last
Wednesday the students met their
buddies and got to know them. It was
great to see students engaging with
each other in a positive way. In the
following weeks the Year 9 students
will organise activities to complete
with their primary buddy.
YELLOW BRICK ROADYELLOW BRICK ROAD
Lisa Smith and her Child Studies class
have been looking at healthy snacks
for primary students. Miss Holland’s
3/4 class have been the lucky guinea
pigs. Two weeks ago students tasted
some healthy snacks the secondary
students made including, zucchini
slice, pizza subs, pear muffins, salmon
patties and tuna spring rolls.
Last week the 3/4 students were
invited to go along the “Yellow Brick
Road” in their lunch time. Students
came back with a bag of goodies
and tried many healthy delights. The
3/4 students had a great time and
enjoyed the experience.
A BIG thank you to Lisa Smith and her
Child Studies class on a well
organised activity.

Thank you to those families and students who have already indicated their
willingness to either host or buddy a Japanese student.
We are still a term away from our visitors arriving on Sunday 31 July, and
we still require several more host families to accommodate our Japanese
visitors for their two week visit.
If you have a spare bedroom, and would like to join in the fun of hosting a
student from another part of the world, please phone Bev Bonython, or
Gail Talbot-Smith on 8398 7207 to register your interest.
On Monday 16 May, 18 boys from OAS and HCCS travelled to Heathfield
Community Oval, the home of the mighty Devils, to participate in a football
carnival against Heathfield High School and Cornerstone College.
This team would never have got off the ground and onto the field of play without
the unique relationship between OAS and HCCS as the team consisted of
11 players from OAS and 7 players from HCCS.
Unfortunately the scoreboard was not favourable for us as we went down by
approximately 20 goals to Cornerstone and 13 goals to Heathfield. Our only
goal scorer for the day was Riley Kernot. Cornerstone defeated Heathfield by a
similar margin to win the day and progress to the next stage of the competition.
Best players for the day in no particular order were Jacob Wilson, Jordan Bell,
William Peter, Zach Kuiper, Riley Kernot and Tyler Clark.
I would like to thank HCCS PE teacher Josh Lloyd for his collaboration with me in
organising the team before and on the day. Also a big thank you to parents
Shane Kuiper, for his efforts in Goal Umpiring, Sam Clarke and Kim Fowles for first
aid and sports trainer assistance as well as providing the yummy snakes to the
players.
Thanks also to our bus driver Jan Mattingly, and teacher Mr Hoskin and parent
Neil Todd for coming out and supporting the students, it was all much
appreciated.
All of the boys can be especially proud of their behaviour and sportsmanship on
the day. Results on the scoreboard didn't go our way but the boys scored many
goals with the character they showed on the field by never dropping their
heads, encouraging each other at all times and revelling in each other’s
company.
It was a pleasure to take them all outside the school.

YEAR 8/9 BOYS FOOTBALL
Social, emotional and physical development is a significant aspect of
children’s lives and needs to be explicitly taught so that children build a sense
of wellbeing, resilience and positive mental health. This year OAS has
implemented Positive Education as a whole school initiative where it is
explicitly taught to senior students during their civics lessons, and to primary
students throughout their weekly programs.
The first 6 weeks of Term 1, OAS staff introduced students to ‘Positive Health’
which focused on sleep, nutrition, physical activity, mindfulness, optimism and
resilience. Emily Watson, PhD Candidate from the Centre for Sleep Research,
Flinders University came to talk to the primary and secondary school about the
importance of sleep and delivered some useful and informative sleep facts.
Positive Education at OAS
After ‘Positive Health’, OAS staff introduced students to Positive Emotions which
focused on understanding emotions, emotional intelligence, savouring positive
experiences and feelings, expressing gratitude, the biology of positivity,
happiness boosters and healthy ways to respond to negative emotions.
Throughout ‘Positive Emotions’ primary students and Year 7’s have been busy
making vision boards about themselves.
The Reception to Year 2 students made emotion puppets and middle school and
senior students wrote messages of gratitude.
Some examples of Year 5/6 Vision Boards.
Please take time to read this Old American Indian legend that spreads a very important message to all:
R-2
Emotion
Puppets.
Currently, OAS staff have introduced students to ‘Positive Engagement’, which focuses on growth mindsets,
optimism, curiosity and interest, creativity and passion, motivational theory, self-determination theory, flow,
character strengths and setting goals.
Two major focus areas within ‘Positive Engagement’ are shifting student mindsets from being fixed: ‘I Can’t Do
It!’, to growth: ‘I Can’t Do It Yet’ and providing students with opportunities to experience states of flow.
“Flow is a level of deep engagement characterised by complete immersion in an activity that brings a
profound sense of enjoyment and wellbeing” (Jeremy McCarthy) where students often lose track of time.
Students at OAS deserve nothing but the best and positive education is a vital part of a child’s development,
wellbeing and positive mental health. Educational research and data supports the theories that the wellbeing
of students is fundamental to rising levels of student achievement and positive mental health, opening doors to
an optimistic future.
