‘Embrace’ - Girls Day Out

On Monday 3 July 2017, OAS girls from Years 8 to 10 and their female

teachers attended HCCS Verdun School to view the movie documentary

‘EMBRACE’ – the body image movement, and

meet its star and director Taryn Brumfitt.

The movie follows the life of Body Image

Activist, Taryn as she explores the global issue

of body loathing, inspiring society to change

the way women and men feel about

themselves and think about their bodies.

The film was really funny and engaging and

was very open about how body image effects

self-esteem which can also then have huge

and harmful long-term effects on someone’s

life.

At the end of the movie there was

a question and answer session,

where students were able to

discuss the issues facing them in

today’s society, especially with

social media.

Some questions were sent in via a

private text line to maintain

anonymity.

The girls asked some really poignant questions reflecting their deep

thoughts about the topic.

On return to school students were treated

to a BBQ lunch and a small mixed group

session to discuss in more detail the parts

of the movie that brought about real

thought changing ideals.

It was a very empowering day despite the

freezing weather.

VISIBLE LEARNERS

The Oakbank staff were joined by staff

from Littlehampton and Hahndorf Primary

Schools for the second Visible Learning

training day last Monday. The focus of the

day was ‘Building and Developing Visible

Learners’.

A Visible Learner is a student who can

articulate what they are learning and

why. They can set goals, then develop

strategies and self-regulate to reach their

targets.

The concept of developing independent

learners is not new – teachers have

known that self-motivation is important to

student achievement for many years. The

work for teachers in this program is to

ensure that all students develop these

characteristics and take ownership of

their learning.

Over the coming weeks we will be

working with students and parents to

identify the characteristics of a Visible

Learner that are most important to our

community and developing programs to

move our students from passive to active

participants in their learning.

This is the start of a three-year cycle in

school improvement. This may seem slow

but it is about culture change and

developing a contemporary education

system rather than one designed for the

20th century. You can read more about

ONE PLANS -

EXTENDING STUDENTS

During the first half of the year Leaders

and staff at Oakbank have been

focussedon ensuring that:

Semester programs are available

and published to students & parents.

Unit plans are clearly documented

with learning intentions.

Assessments are published for

students with clear criteria as to how

students can be successful.

It will soon be possible for students to

login from home to Daymap, our Learning

Management System, so that they can

check their programs in each subject.

This is part of making the learning visible.

A component of this planning has been

to ensure that students with learning-

needs are catered for.

Throughout Term 3 I will be working with

school coordinators to ensure that high

achieving students have plans in place

that provide extension.

There are a variety of arrangements that

extend students. .

It may be acceleration into the next year

level, more challenging work within the

same topic or a completely different

assignment.

We have a number of students who

currently have modified programs, some

for one subject only and others that

extend across multiple subjects.

At Oakbank we want all students to meet

their potential and developing plans to

extend students is an important

component.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

I have received some very positive

responses to my call for community

members to join working parties to

provide advice to the school in the areas

of:

Agricultural and Horticultural

programs

Community engagement and

Marketing

If you have expertise in these areas or

know of someone that has, please email

or call the school so I can discuss the role

and function of the working parties.

CAREERS EVENTS

There are two career focussed events

happening next week.

Firstly, I’d recommend students in Years

10 to 12 attend the 2017 Adelaide Hills

Careers Expo which will be hosted by

Cornerstone College on Tuesday 1

August, 6.00-8.00 pm.

There will be over 65 exhibitors including

universities, training organisations, local

and national employers, gap year

options and apprenticeship and

traineeship organisations.

In addition, information sessions about

SATAC applications will be provided

throughout the evening. This event will

provide our region’s students and wider

community with an excellent opportunity

to explore career and study options.

Secondly we are hosting the Vocational

Education and Training Expo at Oakbank

on Friday 4 August. All Year 9 and 10

students will have the opportunity to

attend.

IKEDA

We are all eagerly waiting for our Ikeda

High School students and teachers to

arrive from Japan on Sunday 30 July.

Thank you to the members of our school

and wider community who will be

hosting our visitors during their two week

stay.

At the start of the second semester, the Year 8 English students each created a piece of

art work which was used to describe themselves.

Students wrote adjectives about themselves in between a series of lines. They then mixed

paints to create colours which reflected their personality.

Once the painting was completed, the lines and words were outlined in a black marker

to make them stand out. The final products turned out to be very effective and reflected

each students' unique style.

“My Child is thinking about University…..Now what?”

Flinders Flash Mentoring

Do you have a child currently in high school, in either years 10, 11 or 12 that may

be thinking about university, but feel lost and confused about the whole thing?

As a parent, are you really not sure what advice to give them?

Flinders University invites you to an event where you’ll have the opportunity to chat

to a number of university students and professionals, who act as ‘Flash Mentors’.

The Flash Mentors meet with small groups of parents / caregivers for 10 minutes

and then rotate to another group of parents.

This gives parents the opportunity to talk openly to a range of university staff and

students, with specialist knowledge, including:

How your child can boost their ATAR score (& alternate pathways to University)

The cost of University: Scholarships and Finance

Future careers
