“ Health & Safety Act 1974”(amended)
The Law
• The Act lays down general principles for the management of health and safety at work, through regulations enacted as Statutory Instruments or through codes of practice.
• The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH),
• The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, • The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations
1992 • Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 • European Health and Safety Framework Directive 89/391/EEC and
changes with respect of articles and substances used at work, were made by the Consumer Protection Act 1987 in order to implement the Product Liability Directive 85/374/EEC
• Health Safety law is inbuilt into UK life, whether an employer, employee or a member of the public everyone has a duty of care in relation to Health & Safety, and Food Safety
• The UK Government Department responsible is The Health & Safety Executive
• “As an employer, you must appoint someone competent to help you meet your health and safety duties. A competent person is someone with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to manage health and safety.”
• It will also be part of an organisations Insurance needs.

• Health & Safety Training in the UK is post 16 yrs only.• Non mainstream subject
• Post 16 considered as a vocational qualification• Countable as a module within the National Vocational
Qualification framework
• Until 2007 Food Safety & Health & Safety were considered as level 1 qualifications in their own right and government funded applied that level has now been dropped from the LAD
• Safety Training to employers now starts at €30 to €50 depending on level (elementary, intermediate, advanced)
