In less than four years, the pro career of Rory McIlroy took him from the status of teen prodigy to the title of U.S. Open Champion. He became the 111th player to earn the coveted trophy at what is considered one of the most difficult tournaments in all of professional golf. The hard-hitting Northern Ireland native seemed destined for glory from the moment he hit a 40-yard drive at the tender age of two. His first hole in one came when he was just nine, and he played in his first professional European Tour event when he was sixteen.

So far, the storybook career of this young golfer fits only a few pages, yet it is the result of determination, diligence and drive from a player with natural talent. He represented Europe in the winning Junior Ryder Cup team in 2004 before becoming the youngest winner of the prestigious West of Ireland and Irish Close Championships in 2005. He successfully retained both Irish amateur titles the following year, and in 2006, he won the European Amateur Championship. Rory conquered Ireland and Europe before becoming the second person to top the World Amateur Rankings in 2007.

Rory shot into the public eye with a superb opening three-under-par in the 2007 Open Championship at Carnoustie, the only bogey-free round of the day. He went on to tie for 42nd position and accept the Silver Medal as leading amateur.

He made the cut in his first professional event at the Quinn Direct British Masters and finished third in his second professional event, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. These successes earned the golfing sensation enough money to virtually assure his place in the top 115.

Despite high expectations, Rory keeps a cool head on his shoulders and lets his golf do the talking. In 2008, he exceeded his expectations by making it to the Volvo Masters at Valderrama and entering the elite of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Rankings. At the beginning of the 2009 season, he was beaten in a play-off for the UBS Hong Kong Open title, yet his performance elevated him to the top 50 in world rankings, assuring him a place in the 2009 Masters Tournament at Augusta.

At the 2009 Dubai Desert Classic, Rory endured a nail-biting final hole and ultimately beat Justin Rose to the title by a single shot. Rory finished in 2nd place at the inaugural European Tour Race to Dubai. In April 2010, the young golfer made his mark in the USA when he won the Quail Hollow Championship on the PGA Tour, shooting a course record 62 on the final day. He managed to beat golf icon Phil Mickelson by four shots.

Then came 2011 and the U.S. Open. The 22-year-old was up against golf greats, and he rose to the occasion with talent and finesse worthy of global acclaim. He set a record by the second round with 13 under par for the first 35 holes, more strokes under than any player has been at any point of a U.S. Open. (He signed for a 66 and a 131 total for 36 holes, the lowest in U.S. Open history.) By the end of Saturday’s competition, he had set the 54-hole record at the U.S. Open. On that Sunday, Rory won his first major and earned his place in the history book of champions.
