(d) Describe the health, safety and environmental issues that are associated with both products and their manufacture. (4)

(e) For both products describe the quality assurance issues that would concern:

• the manufacturer

• the user. (4)

(f) Describe the possible appeal of both products to the consumer. (6)

Plan your answer.

(a) Outline a product specification.

(i) What information has already been given in the question that I can use as part of my outline specification?

(ii) What are the safety requirements of the product?

(iii) What assumptions can I make about how the product should perform?

(iv) How has ergonomics influenced the design of the product?

(v) How has aesthetics been used to influence the appeal of the product?

(vi) What features have been included in the product to improve its function?

There are 6 marks available for this but you should aim to write more than 6 statements.

Remember to clearly state which product you are writing about.

(b) Give 4 reasons why the design of one of the products makes it suitable for mass production.

(i) Will the materials used to make the product impose a restriction on the choice of production methods that can be used?

(ii) Will the complexity of the shape of the parts of the product determine that a certain production method is used?

(iii) Will the type of construction, joining or assembly methods used make the product suitable for a particular type of production?

(iv) What quantity is to be produced?

(v) Has a stock size of material been used?

(vi) Has the same part been used more than once in the product?

(c) Justify the choice of materials used in both products.

(i) In what type of environment is the product expected to be used?

(ii) Consider the safety of the person who uses the product.

(iii) How is the product expected to perform? (weight, stability, strength, etc.)

(iv) Consider the appearance of the product to its intended market group.

(v) What type of manufacturing processes have been used to make the product?

(vi) Is the material able to be recycled or reused?

Remember to state what product you are referring to,

one at a time.

Back up what you say with an example and don’t repeat

yourself. There are 4 marks available so 4 valid, justified

comments should be made.

(d) Describe the health, safety and environmental issues that are associated with both products and their manufacture.

(i) The damage to the environment as a result of preparing the raw materials for production (renewable and non-renewable materials).

(ii) The waste, by products and pollution produced during the production process

(iii) Legislation and British Standards for safety for the product during use

(iv) The pollution caused by using the product

(v) The power and energy needed to operate the product

(vi) How the product is to be recycled or reused after its useful life is over

(vii)How safe the product is while in use

Try to back up your claim by giving a reason which in your opinion justifies the point you are making.

Try not to repeat yourself. This question is worth four marks, therefore at least four points should be made.

(e) For both products describe the quality assurance issues that would concern

• The manufacturer

• The user.

The manufacturer will be concerned with the:

(i) Quality of the raw materials delivered.

(ii) Prompt and efficient delivery of the materials (Just In Time Production).

(iii) Accuracy and precision of each part prior to assembly

(iv) Efficiency of the production team to meet deadlines

(v) Performance of the finished product and how well it meets health and safety legislation

The user will be concerned with:

(i) Safety of the product and its ease of use

(ii) Effect the product will have on the environment

(iii) Product’s ability to perform to the same standard over time

(iv) Ability for the product to be repaired and maintained

(v) Guarantees and warranties issued with the product

(f) Describe the possible appeal of both products to the consumer.

Consider the product’s:

(i) Aesthetic appeal to the intended market group

(ii) Safety features

(iii) Build quality and reliability

(iv) Brand name and the reputation of the manufacturer

(v) Cost compared to other similar products

(vi) Features and functions and what benefits they provide.

Remember to describe the appeal of both products and to

name the one you are writing about.

Back up all claims with a valid reason. If possible try to write

about different things for each product.
