Genetic Screening based on Prevention and Personalized Management of Obesity

Visible Results in Weight Loss

Predictive Genomics

is the area of medi-

cine that deals with

the detection of specific

“changes” in DNA called muta-

tions. These mutations deter-

mine desirable or undesirable

traits and have been associated

with risk for common poly-

genic multifactorial dis-

eases including obesity.

Predictive Medicine is based

on early detection of the risk for

several human illnesses includ-

ing obesity. Based on the Genetic

Profile, appropriate nutritional and

dietary guidelines and lifestyle

choices are recommended.

These guidelines are individu-

alized, personalized and more

specific than the universal

recommendations applicable

to the general population.

Sampling process and turnaround timeDNA sampling is painless and does not require blood drawing. It involves taking cells from the inside of the cheek with a specialized and sterilized buccal swab. The procedure lasts no more than a minute. Results are usu-ally available within 15 working days. The confidential nature of personal data is strictly respected.

Genes AnalyzedGenes screened relate to the following biological processes:

Weight Loss• Sense of Hunger and Fulfillment• Energy intake vs. Energy expenditure• Lipolysis – Thermogenesis

Reward Deficiency Syndrome• Feed-back inhibition mechanisms• Adipocyte hormones controlling weight loss

NutriGenetics – NutriGenomics• Anti-oxidation and Detoxification• Lipid and Cholesterol metabolism• Inflammation – Stress response• Folic Acid -Vitamins B - Homocysteine levels

Nutritional and dietary guidance, support and supplementation as it pertains to physical needs and weight management is provided.

Personalized Weight LossObesity Management DNA Screening aids in weight control by identifying genes that relate to increased risk of obesity and de-termine the specific nutritional needs of the body. Thus, caloric restriction required for weight loss will be implemented for nu-trients other than those identified as absolutely essential and will avoid long term health harm from common diseases such as Cardiovascular disorders, Osteoporosis, Type 2 Diabetes etc. It will also aid in obesity intervention decisions such as pharma-cological treatment through the use of appetite suppressants and consideration of invasive medical procedures.

Obesity is a chronic disease with a strong genetic component. Genes, lack of exercise and high caloric food intake combined result in obesity.

Genes screened relate among others to the following biological processes:

• Regulation of lipolysis [break down of fat tissue] and thermo genesis [heat generation]

• Modulation of insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis

• Neuronal regulation of food consumption• Regulation of energy balance

Obesity depends not only on the genetic factors but also on environmental influences, as well as the nutritional habits of the individual. In the era of Preventive Medicine, knowledge of our genetic profile is an absolute necessity for achieving and maintaining optimal health and appearance. In avoiding and managing obesity, the insight obtained from DNA genetic screening is vital for implementing preventive measures and performing appropriate corrective actions. Nutritional and dietary recommendations according to the genetic profile will provide a balanced and controlled Body Mass Index [BMI] managing and avoiding obesity providing improved life quality.

New Genomed biotechnology offers genetic screening analyzing genes and mutations with strong associations to the various biological systems investigated, all of which are documented in the medical and scientific bibliography.

Genes affect fat storage and distribution in the body, as well as how easily fat is converted to

energy through the process of burning calories.

GENOMED in collaboration with the Central Laboratory Re-search Diagnostics, (ISO 17025 certi ed, spin-o company of the University of Athens, Scienti c Director Nikolaos Dra-koulis, MD, PhD), developed Predictive Genomic Services in Greece and Internationally. This collaboration o ers the high-est standards in methodology as well as professional counsel-ling in connection to multifactorial disease development.
