Objective!vs. !

Subjective !Writing

Objective:Not influenced by personal

feelings or opinions in

considering and representing

facts. Objective writing presents

accurate facts that we can verify.

Objective: ExampleThe Tyrannosaurus Rex was a

prehistoric carnivorous dinosaur.

It walked on two legs, and had a

massive skull balanced by a

long, heavy tail.

Subjective:Influenced by personal feelings

or opinions. Subjective writing

often involves the use of “I” by

the author. (This is the opposite

of objective writing).

Subjective: ExampleThe Tyrannosaurus Rex was the

coolest of all dinosaurs. I love

how other dinosaurs would run in

fear if they saw the T-Rex

nearby.

Writing can have a combination of subjective and objective statements:

The Tyrannosaurus Rex was a

cool prehistoric carnivorous

dinosaur. Because they were

prey, smaller dinosaurs would

run in fear if they saw the T-Rex.
