OBJECTIVES• To create an understanding and appreciation of the

principles involved in the formulation and evaluation of cosmetic and personal care products. The use of palm-based oleochemicals shall be highlighted where relevant.

• To educate and expose those involved in the cosmetic industry to the technical know-how in product formulation and production requirements.

• To provide a comprehensive overview and state of the art information in the selection and use of cosmetic ingredients and formulation technology.

• To focus on the use of physiologically active products in cosmetic and personal care preparations, especially concerning anti-age formulae and double capital creams involving blemish balm (BB), colour correction (CC) and daily defense (DD) formulations.

WHO SHOULD ATTENDAll individuals involved directly or indirectly in selection and for-mulation of cosmetic products:

1. Formulation chemists2. Researchers3. Sales, marketing and production personnel4. Analytical and quality assurance chemists5. Microbiologists6. Beauty specialists7. Dermatologists

METHODOLOGYThe course consists of lectures and practicals. The lectures will be delivered in English by Dr. Luigi Rigano of ISPE (Insti-tute of Skin and Product Evaluation) and assisted by Dr. Nicola Lionetti of Rigano Consulting and Research, Milan, Italy. The practicals will be organised by the Advanced Oleochemical Technology Division (AOTD), MPOB.

SPEAKERDr. Luigi Rigano has a University Degree in Industrial Chemistry from University of Milan and has worked since 1970 in several multinational cosmetic industries (among them Unilever, Intercos, Givaudan, Schering), as product development manager, technical director and raw materials manager. The fields of interest of these activities were toiletries, emulsions, sunscreens and make-up products.

He teaches courses in Cosmetic Sciences at Pharmacy, Che-mistry and Dermatology Universities in Italy, and is the author of many scientific papers on application, evaluation, formulation and industrial production in cosmetic ingredients and products.

He was the Secretary of Scientific Affairs and the General Secretary of the IFSCC (International Federation of Society of Cosmetic Chemists). Since 1986 he runs his own indepen-dent laboratory in Milan, involving R&D in cosmetics. He is the Scientific Director of ISPE (Institute of Skin and Product

Evaluation), a Quality Certified Lab carrying out safety, efficacy and sensory evaluations for detergents and cosmetics. He is also a Consultant of the Milan Court.

PARTICIPANTSLimited to 100.Minimum qualification: B.Sc. in Chemistry/Microbiology/Pharmacy/Biology is recommended.

COURSE OVERVIEWThe course provides a scheme for formulation strategy, from the ‘ideal’ product profile to the identification of key functions, the selection of key ingredients, their assembly and the set of necessary evaluations. From pilot batch to production trials and back.

Key presentations• Aqueous phases, hydrotropes, salts, solution and solubilisers,

hydrophilic thickeners, preservation, osmo-protection, and sequestering.

• Oils, fats, butters, waxes, anti-oxidants, lipid thickeners, crystallisation, sunscreens, solvents, esters, ethers, vegetal oils, silicones, sensory feel, w/o and o/w relationship, and rheology.

• Emulsifiers: amphiphiles, stabilisers, penetration enhancers, feel modifiers, polymeric, from soaps to sugar derivatives, lipophilic, hydrophilic, type of emulsions, structure activity and relationship.

• How to create a functional emulsion against age signs. Strategy of BB, CC and DD formulations.

• New actives and new ways of thickening surfactants.

Lectures 1. Basic principles of formulation strategy: Listing of required functionality and association with

ingredients and formula modeling.2. Quality, amount and progressive model formula improvements.3. Water and its modifiers, hydrotropes, thickeners,

preservants, osmo-protectants, sequestering agents, alcohols and etc.4. Principles of rheology, flow and stability parameters.5. Step-by step strategy for designing emulsions: internal

phase, phase ratio, dimensions, functions, application site, sensoriality and innovation.

6. Active ingredients and functionality testing: anti-age and beauty creams, active principles and vehicles.

7. Thickening of surfactants.

Practicals1. Preparation of aqueous phases, hydrotropes selection

and addition, weighing and clues in polymers dispersion. 2. Preparation of O/W emulsions: temperature cycles,

premix strategy.

3. Preparation of complex O/W formulae, addition or-ders, playing with the key ingredients, from lab scale to

production. Key variables identification and monitoring. Production methods and controls.

4. Preparation of BB, CC and DD creams.5. Sensorial evaluations.

REGISTRATION FEEMalaysians: RM 1800 per person

Non-Malaysians: USD 950 per person

The registration fee is inclusive of lecture and practical notes, certificates and meals. Accommodation and transportation expenses are not included.

The cheque shall be made payable to “MALAYSIAN PALM OIL BOARD”.
