W es e e a l s o c h an g e s i n p e rs o n a l i ty a n d b e h av i o r ,a n d t h e m e a n i n g s w h i c h th o s e c h a n g e s h a v e f o rt h e i n d i v i d u a l .     One s i m p l e o b s e r v a t i o n , w h i c h i s r e pe a t e d ove rand over aga in in each success fu l therapeutic case,s e e m s t o h a v e r a t h e r d e e p t h e o r e t i c a l i m p l i c a t i o n s .It is that as change s o ccu r in the perception of selfand in the pe rcep t i on o f r e a l i t y , ch an g e s o c cu r inbehav io r . In therapy, these pe rcep tua l changesa re m o r e o f t e n c o n c e r n e d w i t h th e self t h a n w i t hth e e x t e r n a l w o r l d . L ik e w i s e , i n c as e s w e m i g h t term f a i l u r e s ,t h e r e appea r s t o be no appr ec i ab l e c h a n g e i n pe r c ep-t u a l o r g a n i z a t i o n or in b e h a v i o r .

    Initially we were oriented by the b a c k g r o u n d ofboth l a y a n d p s y c h o l o g i c a l t h i n k i n g to r e g a r d th eo u t c o m e o f s u c c e s s f u l therapy a s t h e s o l u t i o n ofp r o b l e m s . If a p e r s o n had a m a r i t a l p r o b l e m , av o c a t i o n a l p r o b l e m , a problem o f e d u c a t i o n a la d j u s t m e n t , th e o b v i o u s purpose o f c o u n s e l i n g o rtherapy was to s o l v e that problem. But as we ob-serve an d study th e r e c o r d e d a c c o u n t s o f t h e c o n -c lu s ion of therapy, it is clear that the mostcharacteristic outcome is not. necessarily solutionof p r o bl e m s , b u t a f r e e d o m f r o m t e n s i o n , a d i f f e r e n tf e e l i n g about, a n d p e r c e p t i o n o f , s e l f . Perhapss o m e t h i n g o f t h i s o u t c o m e m a y b e c o n v e y e d b y s o m eillustrations.

    Se v e ra l statements t a k e n f r o m the f i n a l i n t e r v i e wwith a twenty year old y o u n g w o m a n , Miss Mir ,give indications of the characteristic attitude t o w a r ds e l f , and the sense of f r e e d o m w h i c h appears toaccompany it.

    "I've always tried to be what the others thought Is h o u l d he , but now 1 am w o n d e r i n g w h e t h e r I s h o u l d n ' tj u s t sec that I am w h a t I am.""Well, I've just no t iced such a d i f f e r ence . I f ind that

    w h e n I f e e l t h i n g s , e v e n w h e n [ f e e l hate, 1 don't care .I don't m i n d . T f e e l m o r e f r e e s o m e h o w .     Miss Vib , w h o s e attitudes w e r e quoted ea r l i e r ,wrote out her own f e e l i n g s about c o u n s e l i n g somesix weeks a f t e r the interviews were over, and gavethe statement to her c o u n s e l o r . She b e g i n s :

    "The h app ies t ou tcom e o f t h e r a p y ha s b e en a n ew f e e l -ing a b o u t m y s e l f . As I t h i nk of i t , i t m i g h t be t h e on lyo u t c o m e .     aspects appear to be the realization that all of herb e h a v i o r "belonged" to h e r , that she c o u l d acceptboth th e go o d a n d b a d f e a t u r e s about h e r s e l f a n dthat d o i n g so gave her a release f r o m a n x i e t y and af e e l i n g o f so l id happiness. Tn both instances thereis o n l y incidental r e f e r e n c e to the serious "problems"w h i c h h ad been i n i t i a l l y d i s c us s e d .

    S i n c e Miss Mir is u n d o u b t e d l y above averagei n t e l l i g e n c e and Miss Vib is a p e r s o n with somepsychological training, it may appear that such re-s u l t s a r e f o u n d only w i t h t h e s o p h i s t i c a t e d i n d i v i d -u a l . To c o u n t e r a c t this o p i n i o n a q u o t a t i o n maybe g i v e n f r o m a statement w r i t t e n b y a veteran o fl i m i t e d ability and education who had just c o m-pleted counseling, and was asked to write whateverr e a c t i o n s he had to the e x p e r i e n c e . He says:
