STEP AWhat do I see?- I see check-in sections. Each section number on purple background. - other check-in section has orange color.- I see self check-in machines.- Many P.O.P. displays.- shopping carts, baskets.
Who do I see?- I see customers are waiting in the line- Some of them are checking their items in the machine - Beyond the machine, I see an assistance who can help when costumers have a trouble using machine.- Some costumer use multi-task by using their phone during checking their items.
What are the temporal aspects of the place and system?- Time to wait : it is Saturday afternoon, there is not so many peopleI don’t wait so long to get into the self check-in machine.- Time to check-in with the machine : I have never used self-machine since I came to New York, so it takes a little time for me to understand the process. Therefore, this self-check-in process takes total 2.30 minutes.

My experience and emotional statesSTEP C
Step 01 Waiting in the line. On Saturday at 3.00 pm. there weren’t many people. I didn’t wait so long, so I mostly spent time to observe things surround me.
Step 03 Scanning Items’ barcode.Second step of buying, I scanned 3 items, a package of beef salami, my belated birthday card and a nail polish bottle ( For My Roommate). When I scanned, It showed item’s name on the screen. The problem occurred when I was scanning a nail polish bottle because I couldn’t find the right position to scan it. (see also in my video that another customer had a scanning trouble too.)
Step 04 Payment process. This step, I didn’t pay much attention to an instruction on the display since the machine mentioned about scanning a coupon which I didn’t have it. Then, I saw a swiping machine was lighting , so I swiped my debit card to that machine directly. Unfortunately, the payment process didn’t work. I looked at the check-in display and I realized that I had to press pay now button on the screen before swiping.
Step 05 Packing and receiving bill. Items were passed to packing area, and I received a long bill on billing machine. After that, I packed my stuff in a plastic bags.
Step 02 The beginning of buying process.First of all, I had to choose languages to start my buying process. I selected English language and it brought me to next step.
My experience My emotional states
I was happy and chilling because there were not many customers in the line.
I was alright because I knew what to do next.
I felt nervous when I couldn’t scan an item properly. Then, I was tried of scanning and got upset because there were some customers were waiting behind me.
I was confused since I couldn’t figure it out how to pay. I got Then, I felt calm down when my friend helped my to do.
I was surprised that I got a long receive. After that, I was happy again because I finished my mission.

Menus Barcode scanner Card Swipe machine
Step 01 Choosing languages(GUI) InterfaceI saw graphic interface on the screen that showing language menus.
Interfaces that I went throughSTEP D(as defined by Donald Norman)
Step 02 Scanning Items’ Barcode(Physical gestural)I used my hand to grab an item to find the right spot of object to scan barcode.
Step 03 Payment Process(NUI) InterfaceI touched the screen again to make a conformation of payment.
Step 04 Payment Process 2(Physical gestural)I use my hand to swipe a debit card vertically.
Touch screen Touch screen
Step 05 Payment Process 3(NUI) InterfaceThen, press my pin numbers of debit card on the screen.

Three opportunities I identify for design interventionSTEP E
01 Scanning item’s barcode issue- Demonstrate how to scan objects- Installing hand barcode reader so that when customers could scan some Items easily- Improving a visible scanning light- Instead of moving hand what would it be ifscanner was moving around an object instead.
02 Payment issue (GUI) interface - they should have separated icons for of member or non-member payment process becausea program assumed that I was a member and I had to show a coupon first, but I didn’t know what it was. If they had two choices, it would be a shortcut that non-member can omit the process faster than now.
03 Machine voice - While I was scanning my items, I heard the machine voice kept repeating.I think that It was so annoying. It should have said one time or saying with low pith volume.

What are they doing with subway poles?STEP A
03
Action 01:Grabbing orHoggingThe main reason for grabbing is that people can’t make a balance when a train is moving
The ProblemIn a rush hour, passengers might find that there is only a few space to grab on the pole.

Action 02:Leaning on subway polesSometimes, people are leaning on the pole.
01 02
The ProblemIt could bother other subway riders in a rush hour. Some guys own their space by leaning the pole.

STEP A
Action 03:WipingSome subway riders use the pole to clean their hands from dirty things
The ProblemDirtiness is on of the main problem of the subway pole. People might wipe some dirty things on the the pole then germs could spread around pole surface.

STEP B How could I improve what they are doing or where they are?(I need to know issues about poles from subway users experience)
Wednesday, September 5, 2012
Three potential improvementsSTEP C
According to users I have interviewed My opinion
01 Poles issue- From my perspective, I would designing new shape of poles so that It has more space to grab, making more poles,, changing poles’ surface.
02 Dirtiness- I might apply some cleanness to the poles surface and users hands; for example, setting hand sanitizer machine on the poles. - Changing subway trains floor to be rough surface, so it is easy to be balance on that.
03 People behavior- Find a way to stop people hugging or leaning on the poles by designing new shape of pole that hard to do those actions. For example, it could be a zig-zag shape, so It is hard to lean on that.
01 Poles issue- There is not enough space to grab.- There is no privacy between the gap of users hand when they grab.- There are not enough poles to grab.- Poles surface are too slippery
02 Dirtiness- Some people wipe some dirty things to the pole.- Some prefer to stand without touching poles.
03 People behavior- People leaning or hugging on the poles, so other subway riders can’t use it.- Some subway riders carry a lot of stuff, and put around the poles.
Users : students, travelers and workers.

PICTURE 1Laptop + Lap
How could we reduce the heat from laptop battery on our lap?
I met my friend at D+T lab 12 Floor. He was sitting with this position.
What if fabric could transfer the heat from laptop battery to be thermal energy?

PICTURE 2My hands + Writing
What would it be if our handwriting style could be changed by emotion?
What would it be if we had to use both hands to write every time?
After that, I was writing my homework process at D+T lab 12 floor

PICTURE 3My feet + Music + Crosswalk
What would it be if my shoes could control movement of walking by following rhythm of music that I was listening to?
In the city, I love walking and listening music at the same time sometime I try to imitate rhythm of music by changing walking movement.
What would it be if crosswalk grown in the dark at night or It could change colors like traffic light.
I use crosswalk a lot especially at night because I can’t see cars very well, but can’t see crosswalk well at night either.

PICTURE 4Sleeping + Subway
How could we sleep in the subway train in the right position and not bother other passengers?
How could we wake up at the right destination?
On the way home, I found a guy who weresleeping in the subway train. I understand that is a common situation in New York. Sometimes, If you are really sleepy, you might not know what you do as in the picture. You might also bother other passengers and miss your destination when you wake up.

PICTURE 5My hand + A mouse
Finally, I arrived home. Then, I was doing more home work. Personally, I prefer to use mouse more that trackpad of my laptop because it’s more comfortable and it has more space to move, but I sometimes forget to bring my computer mouse.
What if I could use our hands and fingers to control my laptop as mouse functions?
