When it comes to using Stone and Concrete, hard problems come from – as
you would know – stains, etching, cracking, pinholes, efflorescence, dullness,
unevenness in color & finish and the list goes on. Most of these troubles
arise from three causes: porosity, weak binding of stone’s components and
minerals and impurities that became part of stone during its’ formation or after
installation.
3 Factors
These 3 factors cause a lot of limitations in stone and similarly for concrete and
cement tiles. Porosity, high or low, is responsible for stain and absorption; weak
binding is responsible for flaking, cracking. etc.; and sometimes mineral and
impurities such as iron, salt content and mica present in a lot of stones lead
to brown spots, efflorescence and pinholes. All these add more weak spots
rapidly increases deterioration. Mineral content and binding can also determine
the quality of final finish you can get.
Why Permeators
4
Like... the presence of silica results in uneven and low
floor polish & final finish; coarse grain and ash based
stones like sandstones and Mexican Cantera cannot
achieve polished look. Limestones too cannot get a
highly polished finish because it’s naturally occurring
binder is weak.
Overcome
These are just few examples of how porosity, weak
binder and mineral composition can affect how your
stones will perform. So, we realized that we need to
overcome these three limitations and upgrade the
natural quality of stone and concrete. It is all about
making it easy and simple for you to maintain and
clean. We attacked sources and causes of these
limitations and resulting problems rather than creating
another product that just resists. We wanted you to
have a solution that proofs those problems for you.
So, we took inspiration from how stones and concrete
would behave if they were naturally perfect and
mimicked it. We designed Permeators – to make life
simple & easy for you.
Why Permeators
5
PROTECTION : WHY DO TOP-COAT SEALERS & IMPREGNATORS ONLY RESIST?
A top-coat is a surface treatment after final
finish. So this is equivalent to you putting a
clear plastic sheet over your floor. It is a barrier
that will keep anything from going in, protecting
the surface. Okay so far but, here are your three
problems:
1. It does not improve the quality of the stone or
overcomes natural defects. It will also prevent
any moisture trapped in the stone or below the
stone from escaping. This will deteriorate the
stone and everything underneath it.
2. They are usually resin based and high in
VOC’s - so it releases toxins which are harmful
to us and the environment.
3. It will gradually turn yellow. It will also require
stripping and re-applying frequently by a
professional. If you choose to do this without
stripping it, each new layer will
be like another “plastic like”
sheet over your stone masking
it. This does increases static
attraction of dust to the surface,
builds pressure and leads to
cracking.
All this means, it creates a
barrier and provides basic protection from
stains at the cost speeding up deterioration and
masking it. It cannot prevent other problems like
weak spots in the stone that lead to cracking;
cannot avoid efflorescence due to presence
of salt and many such problems. It does not
match the natural characteristics of stone and is
harmful. It turns out to be an expensive option
without any major benefits.
TOP COAT SEALERS
Why Can’t I Get The Same Results : Top-Coat Sealers
6
An Impregnating sealer or Impregnator on
the other hand is available in both water and
solvent bases. Water based
is non-toxic and solvent-
base gives out toxic fumes.
Impregnator’s philosophy is
to go just below the surface
of the stone and block as
many pores as it can. Good,
that’s what we want. Here is the catch - they
penetrate unevenly and they are only meant to
provide stain-resistance. Because of that, five
things happen when you treat your stone with
impregnators:
1. You get weak protection against penetration
and marks from spilling wine, oil etc.
2. Stone floors and surfaces will need to be
cleaned and maintained with special cleaners
frequently because it is only a stain-resistant
product.
3. They do not protect the surface of the stone
because it sits in the pore below the surface.
So you will see wear and tear on the surface,
yellowing and darkening.
4. You do not get protection against the original
finish and joints.
5. It does not match the natural characteristics
of the stone nor does it harden and strengthen
the stone.
Not to mention, like topcoats, impregnators do
not even address issues like efflorescence and
stones that are prone to cracking or have begun
to crack. Most of these problems result from
mineral composition, external weathering and
structural deformities. So, while it provides mild
stain-resistance, top-coats and impregnators
cannot protect from all the problems that occur
due things other than mild stains. There is
significant maintenance & restoration involved
with such treatments and no all of them can be
gotten rid of.
IMPREGNATING SEALERS
Why Can’t I Get The Same Results : Impregnating Sealers
7
Stones treated with Permeators make
cleaning & maintenance easy. All you need
is water & neutral cleaner - it’s that simple.
Permeators correct all structural
blemishes and gives stones a
homogeneous and clear finish.
Permeators act like natural binder that
permanently prevents crumbling and
flaking.
Permeators drop stone’s porosity to
ZERO up to a depth of 5mm to 6mm
making absorption impossible.
This means original look will remain
& no more problems like stains, dust,
efflorescence & permanent etching.
Permeators go deep into the stone
matching stone’s natural characteristics. It
is not a top coat that will wear or peel.
Permeator treated stones are weather-
proof & protects from fungal growth due to
zero porosity after the treatment.
TOP 10 : WHY PERMEATORS PROVIDE BETTER PROTECTION THAN SEALERS?

4
6
7
8
9 Stones like limestone, sandstone, ash
based Cantera can now achieve super
glossy look - never been done before.
10 Permeators boosts hardness & strength
of any stone to discontinue problems like
cracking, pinholes and many others.
It can restore stones that have any
signs of deterioration. Once treated it
will also becomes restoration-free.
5
Top 10 Reasons : Permeators Better Than Sealers
8
Permeators have a strong self-penetrating power that allows uniform descent up to
5mm to 6mm deep. It replicates the natural structure of the stone. It also drops the
absorption rate to ZERO up to the depth of penetration and makes the structure of
the stone dense and compact. This still keeps the stone breathable and protects both
the surface and the structural integrity of the stone up to the depth of 5mm - 6mm.
During Permeator’s curing process, it develops a solid integration and bonding with the
molecular structure. This gets rid of porosity & micro-pores. Zero absorption means, stones
and the joints, do not absorb stains, don’t etch permanently and do not allow dust & dirt
to penetrate. Stones look cleaner and continue looking the same without discolouration.
Same protection is extended to joints as well, which sealers cannot provide.
After curing and binding, the stone is structurally hardened and strengthened. So they are
strongly protected from harmful agents such as heavy foot traffic, extreme temperature and
bacteria/fungus. It hardens weak spots & veins to prevent splits and cracks. Stones bound
strongly can withstand exposure to harsh environments and still be cleaned easily without
re-application. Of course increase in hardness & strength stops problems like flaking and
crumbling.

CASE STUDY : HOW LONDON HUIS CUT THE COST OF REPLACING ENTIRE WHITE MARBLE FLOOR?
London Huis is a villa in the prestigious community of Dubai’s Emilrate Hills. Their 10,000 sq.ft. of white marble floor had been less than 6 months old when it started showing signs of deterioration. Mr. Nalinda, London Huis’ House Manger, got in touch with Obsia on a friend’s recommendation. When we inspected the marble floor in June 2010, grey water spots, wood polish stains and yellow stains had spread all across their floor. They also had cracking in some of the slabs and expanding joints that collected dust and dirt daily along with few other problems.
The couple who owned London Huis were deeply troubled with grey spots, gradual
yellowing and rough spots attracting dirt on the marble floor. To make matters
worse for Mr. Nalinda, House Manager at London Huis, the floors became inundated
with dull patches and poor final polish. Joints also were expanding and taking in
dirt/dust making them dark and dirty. Each stone issue combined to deteriorate
and age a beautiful white marble floor. Mr. Nalinda’s homeowners believed that
all the issues with their stone were particular to the quality of the stone. So they
concluded they would have to move to a temporary residence and replace the floor.
When Mr. Nalinda invited Obsia’s Technical Director, Mr. Kishore Govani, to assess
the flooring in the Villa he immediately recognised the issues with the white marble
floor. These problems were narrowed down to factors such as: high porosity, weak
spots in the structure, softness, unsealed back surface to stop penetration of water
released during initial setting of cement. Variation in shade between the stone slabs
was also visible due difference in mineral compositions.
• Yellowing
• Grey Water Spots due to unsealed back surface
• Open and Expanding Joints
• Cracking due softness & weak spots
• Uneven & Dull Polish
• Shade Variation between slabs
• Complex Maintenance & Cleaning Procedures
THE PROBLEMS
Case Study : London Huis
12
THE SOLUTION
Yellowing of Marble was caused by presence of
iron within the stone. Since porosity had never been
eliminated, moisture and water were reacting with
iron in the stone producing rust. Similarly, dust & dirt
too were gradually penetrating into the stone. With
ThassosWonder, porosity has been brought down to
zero. So, now dust does not penetrate and iron does
not react with moisture/water to form rust and yellow
the stone.
Grey Water Spots, as Mr. Nalinda found out was caused
by moisture and water released from underneath the
stone. ThassosWonder (white Permeator) covered
existing grey spots. Any recurrence of these spots is
also stopped completely due to zero porosity.
Cracking in slabs occurred
due to multiple reasons
- weak spots and air
gaps underneath the
slabs. ThassosWonder
strengthened and hardened
the stone up to 5-6mm
depth. In spite of the air gaps, in two years, only one of
the existing cracks opened up instead of floor being
split into numerous pieces with new cracking. This
saved them the cost of re-fixing the slabs. Hardening
and strengthening also prevented disintegration and
pitting due to rust already present in the slabs.
Expanding Joints left
wide & open gaps that
were attracting lots of dirt
and dust. Our Permeator
process strengthened
the joints and made them
non-porous. The joints no
longer open up, darken or
look dirty.
Original Finish Had Been Hard To Maintain due to
foot traffic and is normally impossible to revive outside
of the factory setting. This can sometimes lead, as it
did for Mr. Nalinda, to dull and rough patches in high
traffic areas. We even made the entire floor even in
color, texture and finish.
Final gloss was boosted
to much higher standard
than the original polish.
Case Study : London Huis
Before Obsia’s treatment, you had open joints. How big a difference do you when compared to before the treatment.
The joints are sealed and we don’t see expansion as the chemical you use to bond them is hard.

OTHER BENEFITS
Their cleaning and
maintenance procedures
became tremendously simple.
Now, the only thing they
do is normal cleaning by
sweeping and mopping with
a household cleaner - they do
not need any special chemical
for maintenance. They also
do require any professional
maintenance or restoration
services. They didn’t have any
more staining and problems like yellowing also did not
reappear.
Sealers/Impregnators should
only be used if you need
mild stain-resistance. For
things like etching, restoration
and renovation, a fool-proof
solution like Permeators
is what is needed to solve
tough problems, end recurring
deterioration and stop weathering. There are many
other problems Permeators have been used to solve
too. Use my personal contact info, to get your custom
questions answered.
AFTER TREATMENT
Mr. Nalinda walked across
a smooth glass-like finish
that surpassed his and the
homeowners expectations.
With the Permeators, Mr.
Nalinda said they had
reduced maintenance and cleaning to keep their floor in
pristine condition. Obsia’s solution not only saved floor
replacement costs but also removed maintenance and
future restoration costs.

Q&A : HOW DID ROYAL GROUP HQ CHANGE THEIR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE WITH PERMEATORS?
1. What were the underlying problems you were aware of before
contacting Obsia?
Completely porous - we tried to clean it and the dirt & stains kept going
in. Flooring was one year old Limestone. Dust from shoe marks goes
inside along with the water when we tried to clean the floor.
2. Is absorption zero after Permeator treatment?
Yes, completely zero.
3. How has your maintenance and cleaning procedures before and
after the Permeator treatment changed?
We were just mopping with water before, but had to stop cleaning
since the floor was absorbing all the dirt along with water. Floors
looked dirtier after cleaning. Now we are just cleaning daily with water
to get shining & squeaky clean floors.

4. Would you recommend our product? What reasons would you give?
We would definitely recommend your product & service as best value for money and most
effective. For about a year we were searching for a specialist to treat the floor to remedy
the faults when we came to know the issue. Then we met “Obsia” at Dubai Expo, who
solved the issue. We have left our small stationery room untreated. We show people the
difference.
5. What do you see in the final finish?
Before the treatment, flooring looked like limestone with natural look - now it’s looking like
granite.
6. How big a difference do you see in the appearance compared to what it was like
previously?
Huge difference.
7. How did you solve or try to solve your problems prior to our treatment?
We tried cleaning it with water before but stone would just absorb all the dust and dirt
along with it instead of cleaning. So we had to stop cleaning all together because it was
making the floor worse than it was before. All we wanted is a floor that requires cleaning
only with water. Simple maintenance.
8. How do you rate our knowledge and expertise?
I would give full marks for knowledge and expertise.
Minimize your maintenance and cleaning hassles. To try, you can e-mail Grishma Govani at [email protected] or call (+001) 832 798 9401

DIY : TEST THE DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE BETWEEN SEALERS & PERMEATORS?
Take two samples of the same
stone. Make sure one is treated
with the sealer of your choice
and the other with Permeator
(see how to get a Permeator
treated sample below). Immerse
both stone samples into blue
ink. Pull it out after 48 hours and
grind the surface of the edges
with Emory paper to observe
ink absorption. You will clearly
see that stones treated with
Permeators will not absorb ink
clearly up to a depth of 5mm-
6mm whereas a sealer treated
stone will have absorbed the ink.
This test is similar to blue ink
test. Take two samples of the
same stone - one is treated with
the sealer of your choice and
the other with Permeator (see
how to get a Permeator treated
sample below). Immerse both
stone samples into oil. Pull it
out after 48 hours and grind
the surface of the edges with
Emory paper to see the where
the oil has been absorbed. You
will see that stones treated with
Permeators will not absorb any
oil up to a depth of 5mm to
6mm whereas a sealer treated
stone will have absorbed the oil.
Just like the other two tests,
take two stone samples - one
treated with sealer and other
with Permeator. Next, make
some paste with by mixing mud
or soil and water. Then rub it on
the surface of the stone and let
it sit for 48 hours. Clean them.
You will notice that the surface
of sealer treated stone will
look yellow and dirty whereas
a Permeator treated stone is
clear. This will give you a good
indication of how the sealer
will perform when it faces dust,
dirt and many such weathering
factors mentioned earlier in the
real world.
